The Sense of Hearing (Hardcover, 4th edition): Christopher J. Plack The Sense of Hearing (Hardcover, 4th edition)
Christopher J. Plack
R4,161 Discovery Miles 41 610 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Sense of Hearing is a highly accessible introduction to auditory perception, addressing the fundamental aspects of hearing. This fourth edition has been revised to include up-to-date research and references. In particular, Chapter 7 on Pitch and Periodicity Coding and Chapter 13 on Hearing Loss include new material to reflect the fast pace of research in these areas. The book introduces the nature of sound and the spectrum, and the anatomy and physiology of the auditory system, before discussing basic auditory processes such as frequency selectivity, loudness and pitch perception, temporal resolution, and sound localization. Subsequent chapters show how complex processes such as perceptual organization, speech perception, and music perception are dependent on the initial analysis that occurs when sounds enter the ear. The book concludes with a description of the physiological bases and perceptual consequences of hearing loss, as well as the latest diagnostic techniques and management options that are available. Featuring student-friendly resources, including an overview of research techniques, an extensive glossary of technical terms, and over 150 original illustrations, The Sense of Hearing offers a clear introduction and an essential resource for students in the fields of audiology and sound perception.

Israeli Diplomacy and the Quest for Peace (Hardcover, annotated edition): Mordechai Gazit Israeli Diplomacy and the Quest for Peace (Hardcover, annotated edition)
Mordechai Gazit
R4,301 Discovery Miles 43 010 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

With the political changes between 1989 and 1992, ethnic unmixing and ethnic migration reached a new climax. State formation in the aftermath of the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the collapse of Yugoslavia led to a new dynamic of interethnic relations between majority and minority populations. The break-up of these two multi-ethnic states created new minorities and made certain members of the previous titular nation (eg Russians, Serbs) into ethnic minorities. New states such as Croatia, Estonia and Macedonia were faced with the fact that large segments of their populations consisted of minorities. "Return migration" to Russia occurred when approximately 25 million (ethnic) Russians became minorities in the successor states of the former Soviet Union. In 20th-century Europe overall 40 to 60 million people were transferred, resettled or expelled as a consequence of "ethnic cleansing." This work examines the reasons for and the practice of ethnic migration and the challenges it produces.

Rosemary Mander, Valerie Fleming
R905 Discovery Miles 9 050 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The changes that are happening within midwifery are of concern to those within the health care system, the academic world and those whose lives are touched by midwifery care. Failure to Progress reflects on the current situation and questions whether it is the most appropriate way of providing care for the childbearing woman. The book discusses what is happening both within midwifery as well as to midwifery as a profession in the context of social change. Topics covered include:
* the evolution of the midwifes role
* women's issues
* the functioning of the midwife within the health care system
* the effects of organisational change
* the relationships of the midwife with the woman she cares for and with medical practitioners.

All of the contributors to Failure to Progress are actively involved with the provision of care to the childbearing woman, and most are practising midwives. Together they build up a comprehensive picture of midwifery today which will be relevant to all midwifery students, practitioners and policy makers and not least to the consumers of midwifery care.

Rui Wang
R7,300 Discovery Miles 73 000 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Akin to nitric oxide, carbon monoxide (CO) was initially viewed as a pure toxic gas, yet it has been recently demonstrated to be an important endogenous molecule of gas that has profound physiological and pathophysiological effects on the cardiovascular system. In spite of the growing understanding achieved in this field, until now a comprehensive book summarizing the extraordinary advances in the research of the cardiovascular effects of CO has not been available. Carbon Monoxide and Cardiovascular Functions responds to the vexing challenges and exciting opportunities that confront researchers and clinicians studying the biological roles of CO in the cardiovascular system. This book presents many never-before-published results including the first case of human CO deficiency. It also discusses disorders where the cardiovascular effects of CO might have been altered, including hypertension, diabetes, stroke, and ischemic heart damage. A product of the collected knowledge of internationally respected scientists, this book serves as a standard reference summarizing recent developments, scientific controversies, and future directions in the study of the biological actions of CO on the cardiovascular system. By covering both ancient and state-of-the-art methodologies in great detail, Carbon Monoxide and Cardiovascular Functions, affords a rapid mastery of the powerful new advances in CO study.

Truth about Wuhan - How I Uncovered the Biggest Lie in History (Hardcover): Andrew G. Huff Truth about Wuhan - How I Uncovered the Biggest Lie in History (Hardcover)
Andrew G. Huff
R742 R620 Discovery Miles 6 200 Save R122 (16%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Shocking new insider information that shows what really happened in Wuhan, China, at the start of the COVID-19 outbreak and in the ensuing cover-up. The day that Dr. Andrew G. Huff left his senior scientist and vice president role at EcoHealth Alliance was one of the happiest days of his life due to the corruption he had witnessed at the organization. However, he never thought working there would be of any great consequence to the future. He was wrong. Because, as an EcoHealth Alliance insider, Dr. Huff had had a ringside seat to one of the biggest cover-ups in history. The Truth about Wuhan contains new research and a breakdown of how and why the development of COVID-19 in the United States and China was supported by the US government to collect intelligence on laboratories in China. Dr. Huff, an expert in the fields of bioterrorism and bio warfare, is a whistleblower who will show why the reasons the lab leak was covered up are incorrect. He worked on the classified research side of the program as a US government scientist. He knows the real how and why COVID-19 emerged. Besides exposing the conspiracy and cover-up, Dr. Huff also puts forth policy solutions and recommendations to prevent a lab leak virus from plaguing the world again. The Truth about Wuhan simply explains the complexity of the system that led to COVID-19's emergence; how the medical industrial complex grew and became entrenched in gain of function work after 9/11; why EcoHealth Alliance was the (almost) perfect intelligence collection cover; the policy actions and decision-making process as to why the United States government engaged in the COVID cover-up; how and why the United States swapped biotechnology with China and biomedical corporations; and the incentives for each of the actors or governments to engage and coordinate a global cover-up of COVID-19 origins. The Truth about Wuhan also shows how and why Dr. Anthony Fauci is intricately involved in the COVID cover-up; how scientists like EcoHealth Alliance president and CEO Dr. Peter Daszak rose to power and used their influence to corrupt science and the COVID origin investigation; and how the intelligence community likely orchestrated the cover-up with Dr. Anthony Fauci. Dr. Huff also provides personal harrowing accounts of how the US government waged a psychological operation against him to prevent him from speaking out. COVID-19 is the biggest lie, scandal, and intelligence failure in US history, and Dr. Andrew G. Huff is stepping out of the shadows to share his insider story about this failure that led to millions of deaths around the world.

Adult Crying - A Biopsychosocial Approach (Hardcover): Ad J.J.M. Vingerhoets, Randolph R. Cornelius Adult Crying - A Biopsychosocial Approach (Hardcover)
Ad J.J.M. Vingerhoets, Randolph R. Cornelius
R3,563 Discovery Miles 35 630 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Crying is a typical human expression of emotion. Surprisingly, until now little scientific attention has been devoted to this phenomenon. Many textbooks on emotion fail to pay attention to it, and in scientific journals there are hardly any contributions focusing on this behavior. In contrast, there is much interest from the lay public, allowing pseudo-scientists to formulate theories that have little or no scientific basis. Is there any evidence in support of statements that crying is healthy or that not crying may result in toxification? How do people react to the crying of others? Is crying important for the diagnosis of depression, and if so, how? This book aims to fill this gap in scientific literature. Crying is discussed from several perspectives and specific attention is given to methodological issues and assessment. Each chapter provides a review and a summary of the relevant scientific literature.

Diagnosis, Conceptualization, and Treatment Planning for Adults - A Step-by-step Guide (Hardcover): Michel Hersen, Linda Krug... Diagnosis, Conceptualization, and Treatment Planning for Adults - A Step-by-step Guide (Hardcover)
Michel Hersen, Linda Krug Porzelius
R4,013 Discovery Miles 40 130 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In spite of the theoretical knowledge of diagnosis and assessment, case conceptualization, and treatment planning imparted by their course instructors, most students are confused about the interrelationships of these processes in practice and are unable to apply what they have learned to the solution of thorny client problems. This book is designed to bridge the gap between classroom and clinic. In pragmatic fashion it walks beginners through the strategies needed to work with adults in outpatient settings and answers the questions they most frequently ask their clinical supervisors at the outset of their clinical apprenticeships.
Three chapters succinctly summarize the crucial general information and skills that must be reflected in a clinician's approach to any client. Then, following a standard format that facilitates understanding and comparison, experts describe specific disorders one by one and present their own illustrative cases to point the way to effective targeting.
