Musics with and after Tonality - Mining the Gap (Hardcover): Paul Fleet Musics with and after Tonality - Mining the Gap (Hardcover)
Paul Fleet
R4,502 Discovery Miles 45 020 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume is a journey through musics that emerged at the turn of the 20th Century and were neither exclusively tonal nor serial. They fall between these labels as they are metatonal, being both with and after tonality, in their reconstruction of external codes and gestures of Common Practice music in new and idiosyncratic ways. The composers and works considered are approached from analytic, cultural, creative, and performance angles by musicologists, performers and composers to enable a deeper reading of these musics by scholars and students alike. Works include those by Frank Bridge, Ferruccio Busoni, Mikalojus Konstantinas Ciurlionis, Rebecca Clarke, John Foulds, Percy Grainger, Mary Howe, Carl Nielsen, Franz Schreker, Erwin Schulhoff, Cyril Scott and Alexander Scriabin. In the process of engaging with this book the reader, will find an enrichment to their own understanding of music at the turn of the 20th Century.

Jean Cras, Polymath of Music and Letters - Second Edition (Hardcover, New edition): Paul Andre Bempechat Jean Cras, Polymath of Music and Letters - Second Edition (Hardcover, New edition)
Paul Andre Bempechat
R2,505 Discovery Miles 25 050 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This revised, enhanced edition of the life and works of composer and Admiral Jean Cras traces, through new research, the remarkable career of this celebrated composer, decorated war hero, scientist and inventor. As Henri Duparc's only protege, his "spiritual son" enjoyed the same level of esteem during the 1920s as his friends Ravel and Roussel. This edition sustains the renaissance of Jean Cras and includes a new chapter devoted to the composer's early songs, to be released concurrently. " Le Canadien Paul-Andre Bempechat, est parfaitement francophone mais c'est en anglais qu'il redige cette somme dediee a Jean Cras ... Tout y est, ... sa carriere marine, ... l'inventeur brilliant, l'esthete petri d'humanisme, le musicien dans son oeuvre. ... Le portrait est vivant, Jean Cras se tient devant vous et tous les secrets de son art subtil sont demontres. " - Diapason "There is no doubt that, in subsequent studies of Jean Cras's life and works, this book will be the first source to which the researcher turns. Bempechat's deft and skilful blending of a beautifully written and engaging biography with lucid and erudite musical analysis, interspersed with tales of military history and scientific discovery, has resulted in a book that is absolutely engaging on its own, as it tells the life story of a most extraordinary man." - Nineteenth-Century Music Review

The Twelve-Tone Music of Luigi Dallapiccola (Hardcover): Brian Alegant The Twelve-Tone Music of Luigi Dallapiccola (Hardcover)
Brian Alegant
R3,309 Discovery Miles 33 090 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Reveals the great twentieth-century Italian composer's innovative handling of harmony, form, and text setting. Luigi Dallapiccola was one of twentieth century's most accomplished and admired composers. His music incorporated many of the twelve-tone techniques developed by Arnold Schoenberg, Alban Berg, and Anton von Webern, but blended their expressionistic impulses with an Italianate sense of lyricism. Brian Alegant's The Twelve-Tone Music of Luigi Dallapiccola traces the evolution of Dallapiccola's compositional technique over a thirty-year period (1942-74). Using both historical and music-analytical lenses, this book documents the influences of Webern and Schoenberg, highlights Dallapiccola's innovative handling of harmony, form, and text setting, and sheds light on several worksthat have been virtually ignored. Alegant's book will be a crucial source of insights for scholars and other readers interested in twentieth-century music. Brian Alegant is Professor of Music Theory at the Oberlin College Conservatory.

'No musician or music lover should be without it.' BBC Music Magazine Robert Schumann was far ahead of his time: his music anticipated a multitude of trends that would spread in the 150 years after his death, and almost every major composer who followed him acknowledged his influence. He was also revolutionary in his attitude to young people; in 1848 he wrote his famous Advice to Young Musicians, a book that is still deeply relevant today. In this volume, celebrated cellist Steven Isserlis has taken Schumann's words of wisdom and set them in a modern context with his own extensive commentary. By turns practical, humorous and profound, this book is a must for aspiring musicians and music-lovers of all ages.

J. S. Bach's 'Leipzig' Chorale Preludes - Music, Text, Theology (Hardcover): Anne Leahy J. S. Bach's 'Leipzig' Chorale Preludes - Music, Text, Theology (Hardcover)
Anne Leahy; Edited by Robin A Leaver
R3,092 Discovery Miles 30 920 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In 2007, the great Bach scholar Anne Leahy died at the age of 46. She was a leading light in Bach studies and lecturer at the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) Conservatory of Music and Drama. Posthumously edited by renowned Bach scholar Robin A. Leaver, Leahy's dissertation research forms the basis for this original study of the preludes to Bach's Leipzig chorales. Originally composed in Weimar and later revised in Leipzig, Bach's compositions have been a source of some puzzlement. As Leahy notes, "the original intentions of Bach and the possible purpose of this collection might be regarded as speculative." Working from available sources, however, she argues that through the careful examination of the links among the music, hymn texts, and theological sources some answers may be had. From Bach's personal and deep interest in Lutheran theology to his enormous musical passion, Leahy considers closely a series of critical questions: does the original manuscript for the chorales simply reflect a random gathering of compositions or is there a common theme in setting? How critical is the order of the chorales and what is the theological significance of that order? Were the chorales a unified collection, and if so, which parts were to be included and which not? Indeed, were the chorales themselves part of a possibly larger corpus? As Leahy makes evident, there are no simple answers, which is why she considers critical the relationship the texts of the hymns to the chorales and to one another, outlining a theological pattern that is vital to fully grasping the guiding philosophy of these compositions. J. S. Bach's "Leipzig" Chorale Preludes: Music, Text, Theology is ideally suited for Bach scholars and those with a general interest in the intricate connections between text and music in the composition of religious music.

The Beatles, Sgt. Pepper, and the Summer of Love (Hardcover): Kenneth Womack, Kathryn B Cox The Beatles, Sgt. Pepper, and the Summer of Love (Hardcover)
Kenneth Womack, Kathryn B Cox; Contributions by Kenneth L. Campbell, Jacqueline Edmondson, Michael Frontani, …
R2,802 Discovery Miles 28 020 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

For the Beatles, 1967 marks a signal crossroads that would both transform the group's career and place them on a trajectory towards their eventual disbandment. It was a year in which they exploded prevailing rock music demographics through the global onslaught and international success of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band beginning in June 1967. Yet it was also a period that saw them in a precarious state of flux throughout the summer and fall months, as the band attempted to recapture their artistic direction in the wake of Sgt. Pepper and the untimely death of manager Brian Epstein. The Beatles, Sgt. Pepper, and the Summer of Love draws readers into that pivotal year in the life of the band. For the Fab Four, 1967 would see the band members part ways with psychedelia and the avant-garde through the trials and tribulations of the Magical Mystery Tour, a project that resulted in a series of classic recordings, while at the same time revealing the bandmates' aesthetic vulnerabilities and failings as would-be filmmakers and auteurs.

Teacher - The Tony Sheridan Story (Paperback): Alan Mann Teacher - The Tony Sheridan Story (Paperback)
Alan Mann
R283 Discovery Miles 2 830 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is the stoy of The Teacher to The Beatles told in his own evocative words with the help of his boyhood friend and rock & roll fan turned author Alan Mann. The book was put together by Alan following a period of intense collaboration between the two men, which only came to a conclusion in 2011. Thereafter the book was delayed because of legal complications which thankfully no longer apply. Certainly, it is the nearest to an autobiography of Tony Sheridan, singer-songwriter and guitar genius, that is ever likely to appear. A hard musical taskmaster, he was worshipped by his fellow musicians, yet somehow still managed to remain an elusive and enigmatic figure unknown to the wider musical public. There was much more to the man than his brief time spent with The Beatles in Hamburg, and the reader will hopefully be inspired to seek out other recordings from a career that spanned well over 50 years. Shortly before the publication of this book, the sad news arrived that Tony Sheridan has passed away in Germany. It is therefore dedicated to his memory, and it is hoped will prove a lasting legacy to the man, his music, and the times in which he lived.

Uniting Music and Poetry in Twentieth-Century Spain (Hardcover): Nelson R. Orringer Uniting Music and Poetry in Twentieth-Century Spain (Hardcover)
Nelson R. Orringer
R2,779 Discovery Miles 27 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In Uniting Music and Poetry in Twentieth-Century Spain, Nelson R. Orringer uses both literary and musical analysis to study sung poems in twentieth-century Spain. In nine chapters, each focusing on an individual sung poem, song cycle, or various poems set by the same composer, Orringer enriches and deepens interpretations of the art-songs by comparing the poet's vision to the composer's. In examining composers such as Falla, Turina, Mompou, Toldra, Rodrigo, Montsalvatge, and Rodolfo Halffter, Orringer shows that Spanish art-song is an exceptional product of Spain's Silver Age and reveals a new way to understand and appreciate poems set to music in twentieth-century Spain.

The Career of an Eighteenth-Century Kapellmeister - The Life and Music of Antonio Rosetti (Hardcover, New): Sterling E Murray The Career of an Eighteenth-Century Kapellmeister - The Life and Music of Antonio Rosetti (Hardcover, New)
Sterling E Murray
R4,791 Discovery Miles 47 910 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

A unique look at the career of a little-known contemporary of Haydn and Mozart, presented against a fascinating background of court musical life in late eighteenth-century Germany. Today the classical style is defined by the music of a handful of composers, Haydn and Mozart being the most prominent. As a result, the accomplishments of these masters have all but eclipsed the music of most of their contemporaries. In this book, Sterling Murray examines one of the most talented of this group, Antonio Rosetti. Born around 1750 and trained in Bohemia, Rosetti spent most of his creative life in Germany, where he served as music director to the Prince of Oettingen-Wallerstein between 1773 and 1789 and then the Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin until his death in 1792. The Career of an Eighteenth-Century Kapellmeister offers the first comprehensive study of Rosetti's life. The events of the composer's biography are unfolded against a vivid picture of musical life at the two small German courts where Rosetti was employed. The second half of the book is devoted to an examination of formand style in Rosetti's music, illustrated with full-score musical examples in the text and on a complementary website. What emerges from this investigation is a portrait of a composer who, having conquered the stylistic languageof his day, challenged those conventions to produce imaginative and highly creative works of great beauty. Sterling E. Murray is professor emeritus of the School of Music at West Chester University in West Chester, Pennsylvania.

Benny Goodman - A Supplemental Discography (Hardcover, New): David Jessup Benny Goodman - A Supplemental Discography (Hardcover, New)
David Jessup
R2,795 Discovery Miles 27 950 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Over the 100 years since Benny Goodman's birth, interest in his life and music remains as intense as ever-yet there has been no new discographical information since 1996. Benny Goodman: A Supplemental Discography fills that gap, gathering materials uncovered since the last bio-discography of Goodman in 1996. The annotated discography, presented chronologically, updates some previously known information and adds nearly 100 new discoveries, including over 65 previously unknown radio broadcasts, airchecks, and films. Jessup presents new details about live appearances ranging from the mid-1980s back to the 1938 Carnegie Hall Concert, including an analysis of the controversial 1999 Sony reissue of that concert. Jessup also offers an essay detailing some of the difficulties of finding recordings in a digitally progressive age, as "new technology" can assist with-or hinder-collecting and evaluating this vintage music. An additional exploratory discography of smaller, collector-oriented labels describes nearly 400 reissues and collectible LPs, tapes, and CDs personally audited by Jessup and his associates. All 182 shows of the famous "Camel Caravan" radio series (1936-1939) are offered in print for the first time in an authoritative list. The volume concludes with a necrology of those associated personally or professionally with Benny Goodman who have passed away since 1996, and indexes by song title and musician make the material more accessible.

Bob Leszczak
R1,395 Discovery Miles 13 950 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Everybody has to start somewhere. Businessmen start on the ground floor and try to work their way up the corporate ladder. Baseball players bide their time in the minor leagues wishing for an opportunity to move up and play in the majors. Musical compositions aren't very different-some songs just don't climb the charts the first time they're recorded. However, with perseverance, the ideal singer, the right chemistry, impeccable timing, vigorous promotion, and a little luck, these songs can become very famous." So writes Bob Leszczak in the opening pages of Who Did It First? Great Pop Cover Songs and Their Original Artists. In this second volume in the Who Did It First? series, Leszczak explores the hidden history of the most famous, indeed legendary, pop songs and standards. As he points out, the version you purchased, swayed to, sang to, and grew up with is often not the first version recorded. Like wine and cheese, some tunes do get better with age, and behind each there is a story. Included are little-known facts and amusing anecdotes, often gathered through Leszczak's vast archive of personal interviews with the singers and songwriters, record producers and label owners, who wrote, sang, recorded, and distributed either the original first cut or one of its classic covers. The second in a series of titles devoted to the story of great songs and their revival as great covers, Who Did It First? Great Pop Cover Songs and Their Original Artists is the perfect playlist builder. So whether quizzing friends at a party, answering a radio station contest, or just satisfying an insatiable curiosity to know who really did do it first, this work is a must-have.

Long and Winding Roads, Revised Edition - The Evolving Artistry of the Beatles (Hardcover, 2nd edition): Kenneth Womack Long and Winding Roads, Revised Edition - The Evolving Artistry of the Beatles (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
Kenneth Womack
R2,076 Discovery Miles 20 760 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

In Long and Winding Roads: The Evolving Artistry of the Beatles, Revised Edition, Kenneth Womack brings the band's story vividly to life-from their salad days as a Liverpool Skiffle group and their apprenticeship in the nightclubs and mean streets of Hamburg through their early triumphs at the legendary Cavern Club and the massive onslaught of Beatlemania itself. By mapping the group's development as an artistic fusion, Womack traces the Beatles' creative arc from their first, primitive recordings through Abbey Road and the twilight of their career. In this revised edition, Womack addresses new insights in Beatles-related scholarship since the original publication of Long and Winding Roads, along with hundreds of the group's outtakes released in the intervening years. The updated edition also affords attention to the Beatles' musical debt to Rhythm and Blues, as well as to key recent discoveries that vastly shift our understanding of formative events in the band's timeless story.

Fathers, Brothers, and Sons: Surviving Anguish, Abandonment, and Anthrax (Paperback): Frank Bello Fathers, Brothers, and Sons: Surviving Anguish, Abandonment, and Anthrax (Paperback)
Frank Bello; As told to Joel McIver; Foreword by Gene Simmons
R421 Discovery Miles 4 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Frank Bello, bassist with the legendary New York thrash metal band Anthrax since 1984, has sold over ten million albums, travelled the globe more times than he cares to count, and enthralled audiences from the world’s biggest stages. His long-awaited memoir would be a gripping read even if its pages only contained stories about his life as a recording and touring musician. While those stories are indeed included—and will blow your mind—Bello also focuses on deeper subjects in Fathers, Brothers, and Sons. Once you’ve heard his life story, you’ll understand why. Born into a family of five, Frank grew up in difficult circumstances. His father abandoned his wife and children, and Frank’s mother moved heaven and earth to keep them fed and educated. Left with no male role model, Frank found inspiration in heavy metal bass players, following their example and forging a career with Anthrax from his early teens—first as a roadie, and then as the group’s bass player. International stardom came Frank’s way by the mid-to-late 1980s, when he was still in his early twenties, but tragedy struck in 1996 when his brother Anthony was murdered in New York. Although the case went to trial, the suspected killer was released without charge after a witness, intimidated by violent elements, withdrew his testimony. Two decades later, Frank is a father himself to a young son. Like many men who grew up without the guidance of a dad, he asks himself important questions about the meaning of fatherhood and how to do the job well. This is the wisdom which Fathers, Brothers, and Sons offers readers. Despite the emotive nature of these topics, Fathers, Brothers, and Sons is a funny, entertaining read. A man with a keen sense of humor and the perspective to know how surreal his story has been, Frank doesn’t preach or seek sympathy in his book. Instead, he simply passes on the wisdom gained from a lifetime of turbulence, paying tribute to his loved ones in a way that will resonate with us all.

The discography provides details for CD, LP, and cassette recordings between 1960 and the present, and the literature section examines more than 120 primary source documents such as 19th-century reviews and advertisements, personal correspondence, journals, and scrapbooks. The Pre-history of 'The Midsummer Marriage' - Narratives and Speculations (Paperback): Roger Savage The Pre-history of 'The Midsummer Marriage' - Narratives and Speculations (Paperback)
Roger Savage; Series edited by Simon Keefe
R742 Discovery Miles 7 420 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Pre-history of 'The Midsummer Marriage' examines the early collaborative phase (1943 to 1946) in the making of Michael Tippett's first mature opera and charts the developments that grew out of that phase. Drawing on a fascinating group of Tippett's sketchbooks and a lengthy sequence of his letters to Douglas Newton, it helps construct a narrative of the Tippett-Newton collaboration and provides insights into the devising of the opera's plot, both in that early phase and in the phase from 1946 onwards when Tippett went on with the project alone. The book asks: who was Newton, and what kind of collaboration did he have-then cease to have- with Tippett? What were the origins of and shaping factors behind the original scenario and libretto-drafts? How far did the narrative and controlling concepts of Midsummer Marriage in its final form tally with-and how far did they move away from-those that had been set up in the years of the two men's collaboration, the 'pre-historic' years? The book will be of particular interest to scholars and researchers in opera studies and twentieth-century music.

Paul Robeson: A Life of Activism and Art is the biography of an African American icon and a demonstration of historian Lindsey R. Swindall's knack for thorough, detailed research and reflection. Paul Robeson was, at points in his life, an actor, singer, football player, political activist and writer, one of the most diversely talented members of the Harlem Renaissance. Swindall centers Robeson's story around the argument that while Robeson leaned toward Socialism, a Pan-African perspective is fundamental to understanding his life as an artist and political advocate. Many previous works on Robeson have focused primarily on his involvement with the US Communist Party, paying little attention to the broader African influences on his politics and art. With each chapter focused on a decade of his life, this book affords us a fresh look at his story, and the ways in which the struggles, successes and studies of his formative years came to shape him as an artist, activist and man later on. Robeson's story is one not simply of politics and protest, but of a man's lifelong evolution from an athlete to an entertainer to an indispensible man of letters and African American thought. Swindall neatly outlines the events of Robeson's life in a way that freshly presents him as a man whose work was influenced by more than just his circumstances, but by a spirit rooted in dedication to the African's place in American art and politics.

I am not sure how he did it.” —Carin Besser, co-lyricist on Boxer and wife to Matt Berninger “Accessible, perceptive, sometimes hilarious, but more often harrowing, Pinkard’s book gets a running start on its subject, tracing The National’s trajectory from their first notes together to the creation of Boxer.” —Stephen M. Deusner, music critic and author We all know the Boxer. The fighter who remembers every glove but still remains. That grisly, bruised American allegory who somehow gets up more times than he’s knocked down. This is the fight that nearly broke The National. The one that allowed them to become champions. Released in 2007, The National’s fourth full-length album is the one that saved them. For fans, Boxer is a profound personal meditation on the unmagnificent lives of adults, an elegant culmination of their sophisticated songwriting, and the first National album many fell in love with. For the band, Boxer symbolizes an obsession, a years-long struggle, a love story, a final give-it-everything-you’ve-got effort to keep their fantasy of being a real rock band alive.
