The technological capacity to transform biology - repairing, reshaping and replacing body parts, chemicals and functions - is now part of our lives. Humanity is confronted with a variety of affordable and non-invasive 'enhancement technologies': anti-ageing medicine, aesthetic surgery, cognitive and sexual enhancers, lifestyle drugs, prosthetics and hormone supplements. This collection focuses on why people find these practices so seductive and provides ethnographic insights into people's motives and aspirations as they embrace or reject enhancement technologies, which are closely entangled with negotiations over gender, class, age, nationality and ethnicity.
Omnidirectional Inductive Powering for Biomedical Implants investigates the feasibility of inductive powering for capsule endoscopy and freely moving systems in general. The main challenge is the random position and orientation of the power receiving system with respect to the emitting magnetic field. Where classic inductive powering assumes a predictable or fixed alignment of the respective coils, the remote system is now free to adopt just any orientation while still maintaining full power capabilities. Before elaborating on different approaches towards omnidirectional powering, the design and optimisation of a general inductive power link is discussed in all its aspects. Special attention is paid to the interaction of the inductive power link with the patient 's body. Putting theory into practice, the implementation of an inductive power link for a capsule endoscope is included in a separate chapter.
This book examines British and American women's narratives of cosmetic surgery collected between 1995 and 2007, with particular attention to what those narratives say about the contemporary status of cosmetic surgery and 'local' ideas about its legitimate and illegitimate uses. The book argues that British and American women employ justificatory strategies that normalize aesthetic procedures by aligning them with nationally-specific notions of 'appropriate' medical treatment. Consumers' narratives are also informed by 'global' discourses that portray cosmetic surgery as a lifestyle choice and a tool for holding one's own in the competitive marketplace of employment or heterosexual romance. Such meanings are in turn reworked by women in their own accounting, at the same time that accounts are limited by culturally-available symbolic resources and institutional structures. Where the general and specific are incompatible - as is more often the case in the British context - women respond by stressing the power of externally-imposed appearance mandates and their entitlement to self-care.
Challenging histories of plastic surgery that posit a complete disappearance of Gaspare Tagliacozzi's rhinoplasty operation after his death in 1599, Rhinoplasty and the nose in early modern British medicine and culture traces knowledge of the procedure within the early modern British medical community, through to its impact on the nineteenth-century revival of skin-flap facial surgeries. The book explores why such a procedure was controversial, and the cultural importance of the nose, offering critical readings of literary noses from Shakespeare to Laurence Sterne. Medical knowledge of the graft operation was accompanied by a spurious story that the nose would be constructed from flesh purchased from a social inferior, and would drop off when that person died. The volume therefore explores this narrative in detail for its role in the procedure's stigmatisation, its engagement with the doctrine of medical sympathy, and its unique attempt to commoditise living human flesh. -- .

The book can be recommended for the aesthetic surgeon and for ophthalmologists. ... The ophthalmologic plastic surgeon will find this book of interest especially in showing a lot of additional possibilities and dimensions in this field. Atlas of Conducted Electrical Weapon Wounds and Forensic Analysis provides a comprehensive publication on the subject of Conducted Electrical Weapon (CEW) wounds and signature markings created by this class of weapon. This volume will serve as a very useful resource for all professions tasked with assisting persons that have allegedly been subjected to a CEW exposure. The volume provides an introduction to basic CEW technology and the types of CEWs currently available. It also serves as a comprehensive pictorial atlas of signature markings that CEW exposures make in the immediate and more remote post-exposure periods. Also, it discusses the ability of forensic specialty examinations of the CEW itself to aid in the determination of whether the alleged CEW exposure is consistent with the objective evidence and the subjective statements. are g rowing among core specialists in the aesthetic field, aesthetic medicine is advancing exponentially. The two authors of this text have worked together to provide a knowled- able and practical approach to the male patient in aesthetic medicine. April 2009 Timothy Corcoran Flynn, M.D. Clinical Professor, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Medical Director, Cary Skin Center, Cary, NC 27608, USA Preface Men are different from women in many ways. Male aesthetics are different from female aesthetics. Most readers would agree with this statement. However, as the majority of our patients are still female, even cosmetic physicians may tend to treat their male patients like female patients. This can lead to dissatisfaction of the patient and consequently of the cosmetic physician. As the demand for aesthetic procedures in male patients is rising, there is a need for good textbooks on this subject. The aim of this book is to explain the specifities of the ageing process and facial aesthetics in men and to present the treatments available. In addition, common skin conditions and diseases that also influence the male aesthetic appearance will be discussed. The book written from the perspectives of a plastic surgeon and a dermatologist should enable us to treat our male patients better, and by that increase the satisfaction of our patients and, last not least, our satisfaction as the treating physicians.
Through its representation, cosmetic surgery impacts on us all, not just those who go "under the knife." Women's magazines teem with its promises and horror stories; feminists ardently debate its status as harmful or heroic; surgeons and regulators compete to define which procedures can be offered and how. This book investigates the ways in which cosmetic surgery is shaping gender, and in the process, it questions contemporary cultural studies assumptions about how we read the media.
Cosmetic surgery is everywhere: we are surrounded by altered,
enhanced, skinny and stretched celebrities, in a hyped media
culture that focuses increasingly on the body beautiful. Once only
associated with the rich and famous, cosmetic surgery is now widely
available, advertised in magazines, doctors' surgeries, and even on
television. In some parts of the world it has become an aesthetic
and cultural norm, yet remains deeply troubling for many.
Working at the forefront of cosmetic surgery at the turn of the twentieth century, Dr Suzanne NoA"l was both a pioneer in her medical field and a firm believer in the advancement of women. Today her views on the benefits of aesthetic surgery to women may seem at odds with her feminist principles, but by placing NoA"l in the context of turn-of-the-century French culture, this book is able to demonstrate how these two worldviews were reconciled. NoA"l was able to combine her intense convictions for gender equality and anti-ageism in the workforce with her underlying compassion and concern for her female patients, during a time when there were no laws in place to protect women from workplace discrimination. She was also responsible for several advances in cosmetic surgery, a thriving industry, and is today best known for her development of the mini facelift. This book, therefore, sheds much valuable light on advances in aesthetic surgery, twentieth-century beauty culture, women and the public sphere, and the 'new woman'.
This is a multi-authored textbook that is simple, practical, and up-to-date and supported by instructional videos for cosmetic procedures that can be performed in an office setting. The focus of the book is on fillers, neurotoxins, and various laser, broad band light, radio-frequency, and ultrasound devices that are currently being used or about to be released. It also covers suture suspension lifts, chemical peels, and microdermabrasion. There are supporting chapters on various local, topical, nerve-blocking, and sedation anesthetic techniques that are typically used in an office setting. The book s format and contents are a bold departure from many textbooks. In addition to chapters discussing the theory behind the products and chapters reviewing categories of products or devices that provide the reader with an overview and some comparative discussion, there are short sections for each individual popular branded type of product. The book is useful for both experienced practitioners interested in the latest trends around the world and those who are starting out or are simply interested in adding new procedures to a practice that already includes certain cosmetic procedures.
Practitioners of aesthetic medicine and surgery already have a series of textbooks instructing on how to treat the standard patient. Unfortunately, they also have patients who do not conform to the average-those who are of a different age, or sex, ethnicity, or medical history, or who have special social requirements. Aesthetic Rejuvenation Challenges and Solutions: A World Perspective pools the expertise of top aesthetic practitioners who look at those complicated areas that tend to be ignored in the more standard textbooks and provides advice on managing these areas of special challenge that arise in clinical practice. The book contains extensive material on "non-standard" and "non-textbook" patients. It discusses how to evaluate these patients, and when to decide that a patient is not suited for a particular procedure. It discusses the treatment of patients of different ethnic groups, and provides guidance on how to manage patient expectations and deal with dissatisfied patients.
Examining the fascinating history of female genital cosmetic surgery, Camille Nurka traces the origins of contemporary ideas of genital normality. Over the past twenty years, Western women have become increasingly worried about the aesthetic appearance of their labia minora and are turning to cosmetic surgery to achieve the ideal vulva: a clean slit with no visible protrusion of the inner lips. Long labia minora are described by medical experts as 'hypertrophied,' a term that implies deformity and the atypical. But how far back does the diagnosis of labial hypertrophy go, and where did it originate? Female Genital Cosmetic Surgery tells the story of the female genitalia from the alien world of ancient Greek gynaecology to the colonial period of exploration and exploitation up to the present day. Bringing together historical, medical, and theoretical documentation and commentary, Nurka uncovers a long tradition of pathologizing female anatomy, a history sure to be of interest to any reader who wishes to know more about how medicine shapes our commonly held ideals.
