Alvaro Jarrin, Chiara Pussetti
R2,945 Discovery Miles 29 450 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The technological capacity to transform biology - repairing, reshaping and replacing body parts, chemicals and functions - is now part of our lives. Humanity is confronted with a variety of affordable and non-invasive 'enhancement technologies': anti-ageing medicine, aesthetic surgery, cognitive and sexual enhancers, lifestyle drugs, prosthetics and hormone supplements. This collection focuses on why people find these practices so seductive and provides ethnographic insights into people's motives and aspirations as they embrace or reject enhancement technologies, which are closely entangled with negotiations over gender, class, age, nationality and ethnicity.

Brow and Upper Eyelid Surgery: Multispecialty Approach, Volume 40-1 (Hardcover): Guy G. Massry, Babak Azizzadeh Brow and Upper Eyelid Surgery: Multispecialty Approach, Volume 40-1 (Hardcover)
Guy G. Massry, Babak Azizzadeh
R1,785 Discovery Miles 17 850 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Traditionally, professional medical and surgical society meetings, journals, and texts are single-specialty driven to accommodate specific specialists with information most important to them. A consequence of this structure is that it can create an unintentional and artificial barrier to sharing knowledge that can benefit patient outcomes. Cosmetic and reconstructive surgeons, more than ever, are seeking to know what other specialists are doing. This publication, the first of a series, focuses on the brow and upper eyelid rejuvenation and presents varied and complementary techniques from the core specialties of Plastic surgery, Oculoplastic surgery, Facial plastic surgery, and Dermatology to address all aspects of rejuvenation procedures of the upper face. Surgical and non-invasive techniques are presented concisely, focusing on time-tested as well as novel procedures. The most talented and accomplished subspecialists in their respective fields provide insights into such topics as Preoperative Evaluation for the Upper Eyelid and Brow; Aesthetic Enhancements in Upper Blepharoplasty; Asian Upper Lid Blepharoplasty; Prevention and Intraoperative Management of Blepharoplasty Complications; Ptosis Repair in Aesthetic Blepharoplasty; Adjunctive Fat Grafting of the Brow/Upper Lid; The Open Brow Lift; Adjunctive Skin Care of the Brow and Upper Lid; among many others. Specific techniques, Patient perspective and goals, and clear anatomic descriptions are presented with each procedure, with several offering technique videos. Guest editors Babak Azizzadeh and Guy Massry strongly believe that, with more and varied practitioners with different training taking on cosmetic and reconstructive surgeries or procedures, transparency of information is essential in order to expose the best information to all practitioners of this art and science.

Omnidirectional Inductive Powering for Biomedical Implants (Hardcover, 2009 ed.): Bert Lenaerts, Robert Puers Omnidirectional Inductive Powering for Biomedical Implants (Hardcover, 2009 ed.)
Bert Lenaerts, Robert Puers
R4,519 Discovery Miles 45 190 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Omnidirectional Inductive Powering for Biomedical Implants investigates the feasibility of inductive powering for capsule endoscopy and freely moving systems in general. The main challenge is the random position and orientation of the power receiving system with respect to the emitting magnetic field. Where classic inductive powering assumes a predictable or fixed alignment of the respective coils, the remote system is now free to adopt just any orientation while still maintaining full power capabilities. Before elaborating on different approaches towards omnidirectional powering, the design and optimisation of a general inductive power link is discussed in all its aspects. Special attention is paid to the interaction of the inductive power link with the patient 's body. Putting theory into practice, the implementation of an inductive power link for a capsule endoscope is included in a separate chapter.

Cosmetic Surgery Narratives - A Cross-Cultural Analysis of Women's Accounts (Hardcover): Debra Gimlin Cosmetic Surgery Narratives - A Cross-Cultural Analysis of Women's Accounts (Hardcover)
Debra Gimlin
R1,526 Discovery Miles 15 260 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines British and American women's narratives of cosmetic surgery collected between 1995 and 2007, with particular attention to what those narratives say about the contemporary status of cosmetic surgery and 'local' ideas about its legitimate and illegitimate uses. The book argues that British and American women employ justificatory strategies that normalize aesthetic procedures by aligning them with nationally-specific notions of 'appropriate' medical treatment. Consumers' narratives are also informed by 'global' discourses that portray cosmetic surgery as a lifestyle choice and a tool for holding one's own in the competitive marketplace of employment or heterosexual romance. Such meanings are in turn reworked by women in their own accounting, at the same time that accounts are limited by culturally-available symbolic resources and institutional structures. Where the general and specific are incompatible - as is more often the case in the British context - women respond by stressing the power of externally-imposed appearance mandates and their entitlement to self-care.

Handbook of Botulinum Toxins for Aesthetic Indications (Hardcover): Kenneth Beer Handbook of Botulinum Toxins for Aesthetic Indications (Hardcover)
Kenneth Beer
R2,593 Discovery Miles 25 930 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Botox continues to be the number one cosmetic procedure performed worldwide. Physicians from a wide range of specialties - not just dermatologists but also OBGYNs, primary care practitioners and ophthalmologists - are eager to learn from results-focused educational material written by leading practitioners. Most botox books focus solely on injection technique. Handbook of Botulinum Toxins for Aesthetic Indications: Theory and Practice describes current techniques, but focuses on securing optimum results in different patient types, e.g. patients of different ethnicities, patients with thick skin, heavy brows, and so on. In addition, the book covers hot topics such as the use of new types of neurotoxins, the problem of counterfeit products, and combining neurotoxins with other modalities such as fillers and lasers. Edited by a recognized educator in this area, and taking a unique problem-based approach, Handbook of Botulinum Toxins for Aesthetic Indications gives practical guidance on the use of different strategies in different patient types to ensure the best possible aesthetic results. Unique, practical emphasis on treatment strategies for different patient types Includes coverage of new neurotoxins recently approved for use Highly illustrated with colour photographs and detailed drawings showing injection sites and technique Written by well-known educators in dermatologic surgery

Rhinoplasty and the Nose in Early Modern British Medicine and Culture (Paperback): Emily Cock Rhinoplasty and the Nose in Early Modern British Medicine and Culture (Paperback)
Emily Cock
R848 Discovery Miles 8 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Challenging histories of plastic surgery that posit a complete disappearance of Gaspare Tagliacozzi's rhinoplasty operation after his death in 1599, Rhinoplasty and the nose in early modern British medicine and culture traces knowledge of the procedure within the early modern British medical community, through to its impact on the nineteenth-century revival of skin-flap facial surgeries. The book explores why such a procedure was controversial, and the cultural importance of the nose, offering critical readings of literary noses from Shakespeare to Laurence Sterne. Medical knowledge of the graft operation was accompanied by a spurious story that the nose would be constructed from flesh purchased from a social inferior, and would drop off when that person died. The volume therefore explores this narrative in detail for its role in the procedure's stigmatisation, its engagement with the doctrine of medical sympathy, and its unique attempt to commoditise living human flesh. -- .

Suzanne Noel: Cosmetic Surgery, Feminism and Beauty in Early Twentieth-Century France (Hardcover, New Ed): Paula J. Martin Suzanne Noel: Cosmetic Surgery, Feminism and Beauty in Early Twentieth-Century France (Hardcover, New Ed)
Paula J. Martin
R4,950 Discovery Miles 49 500 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Working at the forefront of cosmetic surgery at the turn of the twentieth century, Dr Suzanne NoA"l was both a pioneer in her medical field and a firm believer in the advancement of women. Today her views on the benefits of aesthetic surgery to women may seem at odds with her feminist principles, but by placing NoA"l in the context of turn-of-the-century French culture, this book is able to demonstrate how these two worldviews were reconciled. NoA"l was able to combine her intense convictions for gender equality and anti-ageism in the workforce with her underlying compassion and concern for her female patients, during a time when there were no laws in place to protect women from workplace discrimination. She was also responsible for several advances in cosmetic surgery, a thriving industry, and is today best known for her development of the mini facelift. This book, therefore, sheds much valuable light on advances in aesthetic surgery, twentieth-century beauty culture, women and the public sphere, and the 'new woman'.

When the first edition of this atlas was published in 2005, it was well received throughout the oculoplastic and ophthalmology community for its simplicity and clinical focus. Now, a decade later, surgical techniques have been updated to reflect current practice models and advances in technology. The book can be recommended for the aesthetic surgeon and for ophthalmologists. ... The ophthalmologic plastic surgeon will find this book of interest especially in showing a lot of additional possibilities and dimensions in this field. The book will be an asset in every ophthalmic surgeons library." (Karl-Heinz Emmerich, Graefe's Archiv for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology, Vol. 245, 2007)
