Women writers have been traditionally excluded from literary
canons and not until recently have scholars begun to rediscover or
discover for the first time neglected women writers and their
works. This reference includes alphabetically arranged entries on
58 American women authors who wrote between 1900 and 1945. Each
entry is written by an expert contributor and discusses a
particular author's biography, her major works and themes, and the
critical response to her writings. The entries close with extensive
primary and secondary bibliographies, and the volume concludes with
a list of works for further reading.
The period surveyed by this reference is rich and diverse.
Modernism and the Harlem Renaissance, two major artistic movements,
occurred between 1900 and 1945, and the entries included here
demonstrate the significant contributions women made to these
movements. The volume as a whole strives to reflect the diversity
of American culture and includes entries for African American,
Native American, Mexican American, and Chinese American women. It
includes well known writers such as Willa Cather and Eudora Welty,
along with more neglected ones such as Anita Scott Coleman and Sui
Sin Far.
The "Dictionary of Labour Biography" has an outstanding reputation
as a reference work for the study of nineteenth and
twentieth-century British history. Volume XII maintains this
standard of original and thorough scholarship. Each entry draws on
primary sources, engages with the most recent historiography and is
supported by an appropriate bibliography. The coverage emphasizes
the ethnic and national diversity of British labor, the
contribution of women, and neglected political traditions including
Trotskyism. Special notes on Keep Left and the Nenni Telegram offer
new insights into the politics of the 1940s.
The year is 1932. Frederick Ashton is living in Earls Court and
Anton Dolin ('will ere long be proclaimed the rival and successor
of Nijinsky') in bohemian Chelsea. Ninette de Valois is hobnobbing
with the Bloomsbury Group, while little Alicia Markova is exiled to
North Kensington. Less illustrious figures are running dancing
schools everywhere from Glasgow to Truro. Across the channel Serge
Lifar ('who possesses an important collection of pictures by
well-known artists connected with the ballet') is lording it at the
Paris Opera, while Danilova and Balanchine are cohabiting in the
17th arrondissement. Harald Kreutzberg can be found in Hamburg,
Rudolf Laban in Berlin, and Serge Grigorieff in Monte-Carlo. Back
in Great Britain, The Casani School of Dancing will guarantee you a
career as a Dancer or Hostess, earning 5 to 10 a week, after a
series of 150 private lessons at a most reasonable cost, and D.
Walter and Co will sell you an automatic revolving spotlight ('the
most wonderful lighting effect ever produced') for a mere 5 15s 6d.
You can ensure youthful natural contours when dancing with the aid
of a Kestos Brassiere, and at 102 Charing Cross Road Princess
Yvonne will furnish you with a set of rather risque photographs to
further your career. As well as a long biographical section, the
directory includes a list of dance associations round the world,
details of stage dancing competitions and lists of the Dancing
Times Cup winners and Ballroom Competition winners. It provides a
fascinating glimpse of the dance world in days gone by.
Contrasting the views of Native Americans and European Americans,
this book provides a fresh look at the rhetoric behind the westward
movement of the American frontier. From George Armstrong Custer and
Andrew Jackson to Helen Hunt Jackson, the volume gives the views of
well-known Anglo-Americans and contrasts them with views of such
well-known Native Americans as Metacom, Sitting Bull, Tecumseh, and
Black Hawk. Organized around major subthemes regarding the land,
who should own it, and what ownership means, the book traces the
rhetoric of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, then covers current
issues in the words of Oren Lyons, Vine Deloria Jr., and Senator
Slade Gorton. The core of the debate in this volume is the taking
of the continental United States from native peoples by European
immigrants. In chapters revolving around major subthemes, the book
develops biographies of significant figures in the history of a
continent changing hands. What was George Armstrong Custer's view
of Native American culture? How did this view contrast with that of
his contemporary and antagonist at the Little Big Horn, Sitting
Bull? This book is the first to present and contract the views on
both sides of the debate.
Volume XIII of the Dictionary of Labour Biography maintains the
standard of original and thorough scholarship for which the series
has earned its outstanding reputation. A unique study of nineteenth
and twentieth century British history, each entry is written by a
specialist and engages with recent developments in the field of
labour history.
Volume XI of the Dictionary of Labour Biography maintains the strengths of earlier contributions to this well established and authoritative series. It incorporates many scholarly and original studies of Labor movement figures from a variety of periods and backgrounds together with special notes on related and neglected topics. Volume XI pays particular attention to the role and contributions of women and the multi-nationality of the British Labor movement. Each entry is accompanied by a thorough bibliography and incorporates the most recent historical scholarship in the field.
The first major work to identify the original generation of
American geographers--teachers, writers, surveyors, cartographers,
engravers, and others--who made significant contributions to the
field of geography during the early years of the republic. As such,
it represents a powerful research tool for scholars interested in
learning about this group and the products of their labors. A
comprehensive and inclusive reference work, this book depicts the
individuals who engaged in the establishment and description of the
United States. It includes information on people who were involved
in activities that led to a remarkable body of information, maps,
and literature of a geographic nature about the country.

Volume thirty-one of Geographers: Biobibliographical Studies brings
together nine essays on leading geographers and their work. With
its publication, the cumulative record of geographers' lives and
works in GBS exceeds 460 essays. Here, the editors bring forward
critical appraisals of six French geographers, and so illustrate
the rich traditions of geographical scholarship in that country; of
a leading Portuguese figure; a Briton who played a major role in
establishing geography in modern New Zealand; and a British woman
who pioneered connections between the history of geography in
practice and the histories of science and technology. Geographers'
lives and geography's making is wonderfully illuminated in
international, national and cross-disciplinary context.
