Modeled after the Mack V. Wright 1920 film version, the 1949 western television series ""The Lone Ranger"" made Clayton Moore's masked character one of the most recognized in American popular culture. Other westerns followed and by 1959 there were 32 being shown daily on prime time television. Many of the stars of the nearly 75 westerns went on to become American icons and symbols of the Hollywood West. This encyclopedia includes every actor and actress who had a regular role in a television western from 1949 through 1959. The entries cite biographical and family details, accounts of how the player first broke into show business, and details of roles played, as well as opinions from the actors and their contemporaries. A full accounting of film, serial, and television credits is also included. The appendix lists 84 television westerns, with dates, show times, themes, and stars.

During the 1800s, the United States progressed at a remarkable rate. Commerce gave rise to regional specialization and contributed to the growth of cities. By 1860 the nation had prospered to the extent that it no longer depended on Europe to purchase its goods. Innovations in technology helped increase production, especially in textiles, and transportation projects helped reduce costs of certain products. As the country progressed, so did its citizenry and their attention to certain interests: movements on issues like women's rights, capital punishment, workers' rights, education, and mental health swept across the country. As these groups advanced their causes, a kind of journalism began to capture readers' attention: the expose. Although examples similar to it had appeared occasionally in various publications years before, it became more prevalent at the turn of the century. In the spring of 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt delivered a speech in which he compared certain crusading journalists to a character in John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress: "There is filth on the floor, and it must be scraped up with the muckrake; and there are times and places where this service is the most needed of all the services that can be performed." In Muckrakers: A Biographical Dictionary of Writers and Editors, Professor Edd Applegate profiles the men and women who either wrote muckraking journalism or edited publications that featured muckraking articles. Some of the most important figures of journalism are here, including Nellie Bly, Upton Sinclair, Lincoln Steffens, George Kennan, Jack London, Frank Norris, Rachel Carson, George Seldes, and I.F. Stone. The book contains more than fifty entries, each discussing the subject's professional career and major works. In some cases, comments about the subject's work by others have been included, as well as suggestions for further reading. As a resource guide, Muckrakers will be of interest to professors, scholars, and students interested in learning more
This exhaustive resource provides comprehensive coverage of the major players in the Chinese economy since the reform era, which began in 1978. It includes 200 entries briefly summarizing each individual's life and career, with a central focus on his or her accomplishments and the key roles played in the economic development of China. The emphasis of the book is on the movers and shakers of China's new economy, highlighting notable figures from both the initial economic liberalization period and the renewed growth from the early 1990s to the present time. This invaluable dictionary is the result of collaborative efforts across the globe. Over forty scholars from the United States, mainland China and Taiwan, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Norway, Israel and Malaysia contributed. They cover the full spectrum of Chinese industries from banking, finance and investment, real estate, transportation and infrastructure, to manufacturing, telecommunications, media, agriculture, automobile, pharmaceutical, food, trade, service and retail industries. The book includes not only business leaders from mainland China, but also entrepreneurs from Hong Kong, Taiwan and Southeast Asia who have strong ties with the Chinese economy. Because of the key roles they played in economic development, some leading economists and high-ranking government officials are also included. The editors do not shy away from controversial figures, whose actions have had profound impacts on the Chinese economy, and who may have gotten into legal problems later in their career. Scholars, practitioners and librarians in international business, entrepreneurship and Asian studies will find this volume an essential addition to their reference shelf.
Throughout the course of film history, artists have used matte painting, stop-motion animation, model photography, process cinematography, in-camera effects, travelling mattes, optical printing and physical and floor effects to entertain audiences. These are the special effects artists in this book. The biographical entries provide career synopses and movie credits, spanning the early years of cinematography through the end of the mechanical age of filmmaking, marked by Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park and its combination of conventional effects and computer-generated images. An extensive filmography is then presented. The book contains numerous stills, a glossary, bibliography and index.
* a thoroughly revised, updated and extended third edition containing the most cited economists from 1984-1996 * the only biographical dictionary of major economists to appear in any language * provides critical information on over 1,000 living economists and some 500 deceased economists * includes a country index and an index of major fields of work * each of the more than 1,600 entries gives pertinent biographical data This major reference work has been thoroughly revised, updated and extended for the third edition. It is the only biographical dictionary of major economists to appear in any language. As an extensive and authoritative guide to economists both past and present who have made a substantial contribution to the subject, it provides biographical, bibliographical and critical information on over one thousand living economists and some five hundred deceased economists. Each of the entries gives pertinent biographical data, a select bibliography, an assessment of the economist's distinctive contribution and a listing of those critical studies important for an understanding of his or her work. One particularly useful aspect of the book is that the living entrants themselves provided data on what they believe to be their major contribution to economics, thus offering a unique self criticism of their work. The living economists have been selected by the objective method of identifying the most frequently cited economists in the social sciences citation index. The entrants are not confined to economists working in the English language but include all major economists on a worldwide basis. The book includes a country index as well as an index of major fields of work.
This is a thoroughly updated and revised edition of the first, and definitive, biographical dictionary of dissenting economists. It is an extensive and authoritative guide to economists both past and present, providing biographical, bibliographical and critical information on over 100 economists working in the non-neoclassical traditions broadly defined. It includes entries on, amongst others, radical economists, Marxists, post-Keynesians, behaviourists, Kaleckians and institutionalists. The book demonstrates the extent and richness of the radical heterodox tradition in economics. This second edition continues to mark a departure from what is usually found in a biographical dictionary for, in addition to providing standard biographical information, living economists have themselves been asked to state their principal contributions to economics, supplemented by a list of their leading books and articles. A Biographical Dictionary of Dissenting Economists, Second Edition will continue to be an essential reference source for instructors, researchers and students of economics, its development and history.
After the composition of the Decameron, and under the influence of Petrarch's humanism, Giovanni Boccaccio(1313-1375) devoted the last decades of his life to compiling encyclopedic works in Latin. Among them is "Famous Women," the first collection of biographies in Western literature devoted exclusively to women. The 106 women whose life stories make up this volume range from the exemplary to the notorious, from historical and mythological figures to Renaissance contemporaries. In the hands of a master storyteller, these brief biographies afford a fascinating glimpse of a moment in history when medieval attitudes toward women were beginning to give way to more modern views of their potential. "Famous Women," which Boccaccio continued to revise and expand until the end of his life, became one of the most popular works in the last age of the manuscript book, and had a signal influence on many literary works, including Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales" and Castiglione's "Courtier." This edition presents the first English translation based on the autograph manuscript of the Latin.

Increasingly, academic communities transcend national boundaries.
"Collaboration between researchers across space is clearly
increasing, as well as being increasingly sought after," noted the
online magazine "Inside Higher Ed" in a recent article about
research in the social sciences and humanities. Even for those
scholars who don't work directly with international colleagues,
staying up-to-date and relevant requires keeping up with
international currents of thought in one's field. But when one's
colleagues span the globe, it's not always easy to keep track of
who's who--or what kind of research they're conducting. That's
where Intellect's new series comes in. A set of worldwide guides to
leading academics--and their work--across the arts and humanities,
Who's Who in Research features comprehensive profiles of scholars
in the areas of cultural studies, film studies, media studies,
performing arts, and visual arts. "Who's Who in Research: Cultural
Studies" includes concise yet detailed listings include each
academic's name, institution, biography, and current research
interests, as well as bibliographic information and a list of
articles published in Intellect journals. The volumes in the Who's

The Prosopography of the Middle Byzantine Period is a comprehensive biographical dictionary for the Eastern Mediterranean, including Byzantine Italy, in the Early Middle Ages. It is published in two sections, each comprising five volumes, and documents over 20,000 people. The first section covers the period from 641 to 867, the second extends to 1025. Apart from the five main volumes, each section contains an additional introductory volume, Prolegomena , containing principally information about the most important sources for the period - both Byzantine and non-Byzantine - together with a concluding volume with the definitive list of abbreviations, the indexes, and addenda and corrigenda. The work covers firstly all Byzantines mentioned either by name or anonymously in the relevant Byzantine and non-Byzantine sources, and secondly all persons mentioned in the Byzantine sources both from Western Europe and from the Arabic and Slavonic areas, together with those from the Christian East. The articles on the individual people bring together all known details in each case and give information on the present state of research. Both sections contain comprehensive indexes of names, variants of names, offices, titles, places and geographical terms, which facilitate use of the work. A subject index and online versions of all the indexes are in preparation. Thus the Prosopography is a research instrument of use both to the specialist and to all those just looking for rapid information on individuals, a region or a particular event.
The present collection of conference papers focuses on a notorious lacuna in research on autobiography, as autobiographies by women have in the past been neglected to an unconscionable degree. The papers employ a variety of approaches and many of them draw upon new source material. Their subject is autobiography narratives by women between the 17th and 20th centuries, with specific reference to development and changes in the areas of life portrayed, in stylistic and narrative patterns and publication routines. The studies concur in concluding that female autobiography centres around discussion of and reflection upon the relations between and the way these have changed in the course of history. The volume thus provides new insights on the general theory and history of autobiography as a genre.
