The evolving environmental justice paradigm is conceptualized differently based on political, economic and historical factors. In developed countries, emphasis is placed on the role of individuals in environmental decision-making and the protection of their access to the prerequisite environmental information and capacity to challenge environmental decisions is the main focus. However, in developing countries, access to land and natural resources are considered integral elements of environmental justice paradigm. This book focuses on the conceptualization, recognition and protection of environmental justice in developing countries. It explores the situation by engaging an analytical discourse of relevant legal provisions in four case study countries including Nigeria, South Africa, India and Papua New Guinea. The comparative analysis of environmental justice in these countries present a framework within which to appreciate the conceptualization of the environmental justice paradigm
This exhaustive resource provides comprehensive coverage of the major players in the Chinese economy since the reform era, which began in 1978. It includes 200 entries briefly summarizing each individual's life and career, with a central focus on his or her accomplishments and the key roles played in the economic development of China. The emphasis of the book is on the movers and shakers of China's new economy, highlighting notable figures from both the initial economic liberalization period and the renewed growth from the early 1990s to the present time. This invaluable dictionary is the result of collaborative efforts across the globe. Over forty scholars from the United States, mainland China and Taiwan, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Norway, Israel and Malaysia contributed. They cover the full spectrum of Chinese industries from banking, finance and investment, real estate, transportation and infrastructure, to manufacturing, telecommunications, media, agriculture, automobile, pharmaceutical, food, trade, service and retail industries. The book includes not only business leaders from mainland China, but also entrepreneurs from Hong Kong, Taiwan and Southeast Asia who have strong ties with the Chinese economy. Because of the key roles they played in economic development, some leading economists and high-ranking government officials are also included. The editors do not shy away from controversial figures, whose actions have had profound impacts on the Chinese economy, and who may have gotten into legal problems later in their career. Scholars, practitioners and librarians in international business, entrepreneurship and Asian studies will find this volume an essential addition to their reference shelf.
Originally published in 1990. Many post-World War I autobiographies focus on episodes of crisis. In a century torn by global strife and breakdown of cultural institutions, autobiography provides a way of recovering from crisis and restructuring reality-a healing act that involves the writer in a "wrestle with words and meanings" that can be deeply regenerative. Narration can be a way of purging guilt and pain, re-centering the self, and reconnecting with community after a shattering experience has driven one into silence and isolation. This book considers the problems, such as finding words for the inexplicable, the narrative perspective chosen and the traditional forms or narrative structures as means of re-patterning consciousness. It looks at seven autobiographies as crisis narratives and demonstrates how therapy and art merge in autobiography so that the literature acts back upon life. Works considered: Vera Brittain's Testament of Youth; Elie Wiesel's Night; Christa Wolf's Kinheitsmuster (A Model Childhood); C. S. Lewis' A Grief Observed; Peter Handke's Wunschloses Unglueck (A Sorrow Beyond Dreams); Adrienne Rich's Of Woman Born; Robert Prisig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance.

Some of the women were eccentric, many very adventurous, some were in search of a different world. British women make up the largest portion of the book's focus--these particular adventurers being backed in many cases by family money, scientific inquiry, and the ready availability of the British seafaring tradition. Entries feature biographical information including the woman's family background, her educational history, and a brief summary of her world travels, with in many cases evocative extracts from their writings (many are literary gems).

This second edition also includes nine new biographies of contemporary Latin American presidents, providing an updated view of the region's leadership. Readers will notice several patterns running through the individual biographies. The concept of native identity is an important aspect in the stories of Malinche, Juarez, Sandino, and Zapata--profoundly affecting the politics of modern Brazil, Mexico, and Nicaragua. One also sees a continuing compulsion to rebel against overwhelming odds in the cases of Manuela Saenz and "Che" Guevara and, today, in that of Daniel Ortega. |
