Dark Moon Press brings you the classic The Devil's Dictionary a
satirical reference book written by Ambrose Bierce, which earned
him the epithets Bitter Bierce, the Devil's Lexicographer, and the
Wickedest Man in San Francisco. The book offers reinterpretations
of terms in the English language, lampooning cant and political
doublespeak. It was originally published in 1906 as The Cynic's
Word Book before being retitled in 1911. "An enjoyable work, fun to
read as well as thought-provoking....Just because the dictionary is
90 years old doesn't make it any less apropos for modern readers."

Our ancient texts are a virtual treasure-trove of wise sayings, and
teachings on correct living. And this book is an attempt to draw on
this inexhaustible wealth. Here is a collection of Subhashitas
(noble sayings in Sanskrit). These sayings reveal a simple,
down-to-earth philosophy and convey important morals for the common
people with enlightening examples from Nature. Material has been
drawn fom celebrated ancient thinkers and philosophers such as
Kalidasa, Bhavabhuti, Kalhana, Bhartrihari and others. This book
brings together many of their noble sayings with translation and
elaboration in simple English. Material for the book has also been
sourced from the Vedas, Upanishads, Mahabharata, Ramayana, Puranas,
Panchatantra, Hitopadesha, Neeti Shataka and other celebrated
works. Besides being enjoyable reading, the book shows the path to
true happiness and contentment. Some Immortal Sayings: *The Sun is
red at the time of rising, and red at the time of setting too.
Similarly, noble peole remain same at the time of happiness or
distress. *Mean-minded people discriminate between people as their
own and others. For noble men, however, the whole world forms their
family. *One must accept sorrow as one accepts happiness - for
happiness and sorrow come rotating like a wheel. *People blinded by
anger disregard those who have worked for them, hurt holy men and
harm themselves. What more can they do? *Fie upon a man who lives
without helping others. Hail the animals, for they serve even after
their death, by their skin. *Mind wanders everywhere like an
intoxicated elephant. Intelligence with God-like knowledge, stops
the wandering of the mind and calms it down.

pursue happiness. You have to catch it yourself." Author unknown
A definitive book of quotations with comments not only from
generals (such as General Sherman's "War is hell,") and presidents
(Lincoln's description of army recruitment/retention as "trying to
shovel fleas. You take up a shovelful, but before you can dump them
anywhere, they are gone,") but also from ordinary soldiers (Sam R.
Watkins' "A private soldier is but an automator, a machine that
works by the command of a good, bad, or indifferent engineer, and
is presumed to know nothing of all these great events,") and quotes
from businessmen, wives and daughters (such as Southerner Sarah
Morgan's comment about Northern newspapers "There must be many
humane, reasonable men in the North, can they not teach their
Editors decency in this their hour of triumph") nurses, African
Americans (both enslaved and free, such as John S. Rock, a lawyer
in Boston), foreign observers (such as William Howard Russell), and
many others, this work will also include more contextual
information than other books of Civil War quotations.
Organized by topic and collecting quotations from people from
different classes and with different perspectives on the conflict,
The Oxford Book of Civil War Quotations should engage the casual
reader as well as be an essential volume for the library of Civil
War buffs. Thirty-five halftones will illustrate selected topics

The wise-sayers say "you are what you think." If that's so, then
the body is merely the transporter for the mind. The body does not
last but the mind can. And that possibility could explain why so
many of the ancient sayings apply to the today's world and possibly
eternity. Take Aesop. He lived 620 - 560 BC. He said "No act of
kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted." This is still a
wise saying some 2600 years later. Back then the memory system was
mental. Today, we have computers and a digital memory system. But
our present society is built on a procession of thinking from many
years past. The situation is succinctly expressed by William
Feather (1889 - 1981) who said, "The wisdom of the wise and the
experience of the ages are preserved into perpetuity by a nation's
proverbs, fables, folk sayings and quotations." Looking to the
future, we appear to be poised for some great things. Preparing for
the future, Walt Disney (1901 - 1966) said, "Crowded classrooms and
half-day sessions are a tragic waste of our greatest national
resource --- the minds of our children" and Nicholas Zaharis (1921
- ) said "Education is expensive but ignorance is more expensive."

The author visualizes the contents as a source of ideas for

reading and thinking. It is sort of a table-top book that can be
opened and read at random.

Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce (born June 24, 1842; died sometime after
December 26, 1913) was an American editorialist, journalist, short
storywriter, fabulist, and satirist. Today, he is probably best
known for his short story "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" and
his satirical lexicon The Devil's Dictionary. His vehemence as a
critic, his motto "Nothing matters" and the sardonic view of human
nature that informed his work all earned him the nickname "Bitter
Bierce." Despite his reputation as a searing critic, Bierce was
known to encourage younger writers, including poet George Sterling
and fiction writer W. C. Morrow. Bierce employed a distinctive
style of writing, especially in his stories. His style often
embraces an abrupt beginning, dark imagery, vague references to
time, limited descriptions, impossible events and the theme of war.

If you will allow Him to, the Holy Spirit will speak to you through
God's written Word, the Holy Bible: and when it happens, your life
will take on greater meaning and you'll be wiser in dealing with
the events of each day. God's Word is quick, and powerful, and
sharper than any two-edged sword, utting deep into our innermost
thughts and desires and exposing us for what we really are. The
humor found in this book will help relieve the stress of your daily
routine here on Earth, our temporary place of abode, and prepare us
for the life to come. God has an answer for all that is happening
around us, and everything is naked and exposed before His eyes. His
Word is profitable for our teaching, our correction, and our
conviction.
