"The mere sense of living is joy enough." Emily Dickinson, 1830-1886, American poet Humanity's story is one long testimony to the truth that life is as rewarding and beautiful as you make it. As pioneers, inventors, and dreamers have always known, you can do anything if only you persevere. Ever since we hauled ourselves out of the swamp, our history has been one of extraordinary cultural and technological progress, of mind-boggling discoveries and remarkable achievements, often against the odds. It's no coincidence that you see no statues of pessimists in city squares. Still, cynical and doubting voices are heard all too loudly and frequently in public discourse. A potent antidote to their gloom and doom, "The Optimist's Handbook" is a joyful explosion of wit and wisdom from our past and present that celebrates the art of greeting life with the excitement it deserves. This handbook will inspire, enchant, and entertain you as you go forward into all your wonderful tomorrows. Even if, after reading it, you are not moved to feats of glory for the greater good, the fact is that optimists are healthier, happier, and richer than their gloomy counterparts. Hear that, killjoys? "The world is a grindstone and life is your nose." Fred Allen, 1894-1956, American humorist Why beat around the bush? The truth is that life is a never-ending cycle of toil and pain with nothing but death to reward all our suffering. Furthermore, what solace is there in blind optimism or fanciful daydreaming when it is perfectly clear that the world is heading toward a complete meltdown whether we live in it or not? Resigning yourself to life's grim treadmill, and thereby avoiding more disappointments, is the best way to trudge forward. "The Pessimist's Handbook" is an indispensable companion on your journey through this vale of tears. A clear-sighted, realistic look at life's obstacles, this guidebook is stocked with the pearls of wisdom you need to counter the irritating voices of those who trumpet futile positivity and inane confidence in a brighter future. Feel reassured that scores of people share your sense of impending doom...and have done so for centuries. After all, misery loves company, but not when it's a horde of perky utopians.

Francisco de Rojas Zorrilla (Toledo, 1607-Madrid, 1648). Espana.

The mind is fortified by learning and the spirit is strengthened by doing. Combined, they become exponential. During the compilation of Dr. Randolph Howes' research books on oxygen metabolism, he recorded his random musings for both informative and entertainment purposes. Coffee Table Musings of the Da Vinci in Cowboy Boots represents a five year collection of his pithy prose and perspicacious aphorisms. With sardonic humor akin to Ambrose Bierce, Howes' intellectual capacity nevertheless ranks with the best in science and medicine today. He covers a plethora of subjects in the scientific world and in our everyday lives. Whether it's about a "thermodynamic treasure trove of biochemical perplexities," the frailty of human perfection, or Leo Tolstoy's wisdom, Howes delivers a funny and thought-provoking read. Take a minute to enjoy Howes' unique brand of wit. These "sardonic nuggets" are like potato chips...you can't consume just one

Eldritch . . . cacodaemoniacal . . . lucubration . . . Have you ever wondered about the meaning of these and other esoteric words used by Lovecraft and his colleagues? In this immense dictionary, the product of years of scholarship and research, Dan Clore not only defines thousands of words found in the work of H. P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith, Robert E. Howard, and others, but supplies their derivation and, most impressively, provides parallel usages of the words from centuries of English usage, citing authors ranging from Cotton Mather to Henry Kuttner, from Edmund Spenser to Samuel R. Delany. This is a volume that scholars of English usage, enthusiasts of fantasy and horror literature, and readers who love the beauty of the English language will find richly rewarding . . . either to read from beginning to end or to dip into as the mood strikes them. Dan Clore is a free-lance writer and scholar who has published articles in Lovecraft Studies, Studies in Weird Fiction and numerous other journals and critical anthologies. His fiction is collected in The Unspeakable and Others, first published in 2001.
Lois Barry, award-winning Professor English and Writing, has assembled an intriguing miscellany of letter-writing history, facts, quotations and writing suggestions. Nearly 200 quotations celebrate letter writing from Lord Byrons classic assertion that Letter writing is the only device for combining solitude with good company, to Kate Spades modern appreciation, Its uplifting to get a letterlike an ooh! in your mail box. Marianne Moores enthusiastic report, I had a letter from Elisabeth [Bishop] a day or two ago, which Im thinking of having tattooed on me ] balances Anne Sextons poignant relief, Im glad you wrote to me. I thought I had died or something, Ada Leverson cautions, You dont know a woman until you have received a letter from her, while John Donne romantically declares More than kisses, letters mingle souls. Chapters of quotations cover all aspects of correspondence: writing letters, receiving letters, saving letters, appreciating letters, waiting for letters, love letters and more. "Always First Class" combines entertaining reminders of old-fashioned letter writing for those of a certain age with persuasive suggestions that young technophiles explore this pleasantly retro means of communication. Historical information ranges from the once-practical (On making vellum: First, kill a goat) to the economic ( In 1673 when 50 cents a day was a living wage in the American colonies, it cost $3.50 to send a letter from New York to Philadelphia). In addition to an appreciation of letter writing and a history of the social changes necessary before private personal letters could be exchanged, three chapters focus on various occasions and myriad topics for writing letters from Do you remember when we ] ? to Where do you think well be ten years from now? Readers are encouraged to go beyond texting, tweeting and e-mail to write real letters once again, to connect with distant family and old friends in a deeply personal way. The book closes with an invitation to submit copies of treasured personal letters for a forthcoming collection, A Friendly Exchange, Americas Personal Letters.
We are all familiar with the phenomenon known as Barack Obama. However, many of us don't know what he has worked for while in the Senate-what sort of legislation has he, himself, sponsored or co-sponsored. This book provides an invaluable glimpse of what the Senator feels passionately about, listing and detailing all of the Senate Bills and Resolutions that Senator Barack Obama sponsored or co-sponsored during 2007, the first term of the 110th Congress.*****It also lists all the co-sponsors of these bills so you can see who he has worked with-which Democratic and Republican Senators he has reached out to for these legislative initiatives.*****Because of the complexity of some of the Bills and Resolutions, each of the pieces (with the exception of two) are accompanied by highlighted, official summaries of the legislation that clearly, in simple language, outlines the intent and impact of that Bill or Resolution.*****The legislation covered here encompasses a wide variety of subjects, including Iran and Iraq, US energy policy and health care.*****Take a look for yourself at what Senator Obama has done during the 110th Congress of the United States during 2007.
Speaking of Information: The Library Juice Quotation Book is a compilation of quotations originally collected for the Quotes of the Week section of Library Juice, an e-zine published by Rory Litwin between 1998 and 2005 that dealt with philosophical and political dimensions of librarianship. Persons quoted include famous, not-so-famous, and infamous figures from classical to contemporary periods. Librarians are quoted, as well as intellectuals, politicians, novelists, scientists, celebrities, and other commentators. Some quotes are about libraries and librarians, others are about intellectual freedom, and others are about the information society from a philosophical perspective. A central thread tying these quotations together is the idea of the library as servant and protector of the public sphere. A rich collection easily dipped in and out of.
