Eldritch . . . cacodaemoniacal . . . lucubration . . . Have you
ever wondered about the meaning of these and other esoteric words
used by Lovecraft and his colleagues? In this immense dictionary,
the product of years of scholarship and research, Dan Clore not
only defines thousands of words found in the work of H. P.
Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith, Robert E. Howard, and others, but
supplies their derivation and, most impressively, provides parallel
usages of the words from centuries of English usage, citing authors
ranging from Cotton Mather to Henry Kuttner, from Edmund Spenser to
Samuel R. Delany. This is a volume that scholars of English usage,
enthusiasts of fantasy and horror literature, and readers who love
the beauty of the English language will find richly rewarding . . .
either to read from beginning to end or to dip into as the mood
strikes them. Dan Clore is a free-lance writer and scholar who has
published articles in Lovecraft Studies, Studies in Weird Fiction
and numerous other journals and critical anthologies. His fiction
is collected in The Unspeakable and Others, first published in
2001.
Quotations are like tools, gauges, meters, warning lights,
instruments and controls, which are essential for the smooth
operation of our life's vehicle. Because of their depth and
poignancy, they serve as palatable cooked-and-packaged food, and
save us the hassle of collecting ingredients and cooking them
ourselves. The minimum they do for us is to widen our list of
options to handle different situations of life and be better
prepared for all eventualities.

Proverbs, Tall Tales, and Humorous Sayings of a Bygone Era
Fred G. Wilson s childhood was set against the backdrop of The
Great Depression and World War II, formative years that shaped his
own character and the character of a nation. Having a sense of
humor seemed to ease the misery of those bygone days, he writes,
and people poked fun at each other and sought to make light of the
woes they were experiencing. Out of this era came some colorful,
humorous, and enlightened sayings. In every part of our nation,
there were colloquial expressions that summed up the feelings of
the local region. This book contains some of these Many of these
expressions were learned at home from Mom and Dad. This was before
television and we learned to amuse ourselves with home-grown
entertainment. Farm work, taking care of the livestock, and the
many chores kept us busy. When I reflect back on those days, I
wouldn t change them even if I could Country folk have a language
all their own. In Say What?, author Fred G. Wilson has gathered
many of these expressions in order to save them for future
generations, shedding a light on what it was like to grow up during
the forties and fifties in rural America.
Another book of quotations? Indeed there are numerous excellent
extant anthologies of quotations, but these tend to be very broad,
with a bias toward classical and well-known authors; those works
which document the contributions of Black authors have tended to
focus on African-Americans, considerable as their output is.
Undeniable recognition of this prevalence is reflected in the title
of the present volume which pays homage to W. E. B. Du Bois?
classic work and in the preponderance of entries from American
sources. Nevertheless, effort has been made to cast a wider net to
capture under-represented and unfamiliar voices. Khemetic texts
preserved in papyri and stelae are the earliest literature to have
survived, followed by the writings of North African Romans and
Ethiopian philosophers and clerics, and the lately recovered
Timbuktu manuscripts from their repositories in the desert sands of
Mali. The Transatlantic slave experience gave rise to the slave
narratives and abolitionist literature from both sides of the
Atlantic, which remained predominant right up to the 20th century.
Post-Emancipation under colonial rule and white domination, Black
poetry and prose emerged, adhering to prevailing standards,
evidenced typically in the work of Phillis Wheatley and the sonnets
of Claude McKay. With the Civil Rights and Black Power movements
would come iconoclastic expressions of protest and identity. There
is a sizeable body of literature by Black authors from Africa and
the diaspora who speak to universal values and eternal verities.
This anthology of their work focuses on the inner life, on personal
development and self-actualization. 3000 quotations have been
selected to inspire, enlightenand encourage; they have been
arranged in 200 psycho-spiritual categories and in chronological
order. The resulting timeline of thought in itself is useful and
instructive as it demonstrates very clearly the evolution of
consciousness evident in the contemporary thinking on particular
subjects. Like its predecessor, Wisdom for the Soul: Five Millennia
of Prescriptions for Spiritual Healing, this volume contains a full
biographical index and bibliographical references. Much of the
material is anthologized here for the first time.

We are all familiar with the phenomenon known as Barack Obama.
However, many of us don't know what he has worked for while in the
Senate-what sort of legislation has he, himself, sponsored or
co-sponsored. This book provides an invaluable glimpse of what the
Senator feels passionately about, listing and detailing all of the
Senate Bills and Resolutions that Senator Barack Obama sponsored or
co-sponsored during 2007, the first term of the 110th
Congress.*****It also lists all the co-sponsors of these bills so
you can see who he has worked with-which Democratic and Republican
Senators he has reached out to for these legislative
initiatives.*****Because of the complexity of some of the Bills and
Resolutions, each of the pieces (with the exception of two) are
accompanied by highlighted, official summaries of the legislation
that clearly, in simple language, outlines the intent and impact of
that Bill or Resolution.*****The legislation covered here
encompasses a wide variety of subjects, including Iran and Iraq, US
energy policy and health care.*****Take a look for yourself at what
Senator Obama has done during the 110th Congress of the United
States during 2007.
