Leading scholars analyse the experiences of a broad range of countries and offer insights into their responses to the numerous challenges faced by national pension systems. The book covers significant moments in pensions history following the World Bank's 1994 report on Averting the Old Age Crisis, and subsequent responses to challenges posed by longevity and economic crises. This book will be an ideal companion for academic researchers and financial law scholars interested in pensions and looking to develop an international perspective on the issue, as well as professionals in the pensions industry who are engaging with other countries and looking to develop their knowledge of overseas pension systems.

Robert Libby, Patricia Libby, Frank Hodge
R1,741 Discovery Miles 17 410 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Libby/Libby/Hodge wrote this text based on their belief that the subject of financial accounting is inherently interesting, but financial accounting textbooks are often not. They believe that accounting is an exciting field of study and one that is important to future careers in business. When writing this text, they considered career relevance as their guide when selecting material, and the need to engage the student as their guide to style, pedagogy, and design. Financial Accounting 11e successfully implements a real-world, single focus company approach in every chapter. The companies chosen are engaging and the decision-making focus shows the relevance of financial accounting regardless of if a student has chosen to major in accounting. Libby/Libby/Hodge believes in the building-block approach to teaching transaction analysis. Most faculty agree that mastery of the accounting cycle is critical to success in financial accounting, and yet most financial texts introduce and develop transaction analysis in one chapter, bombarding a student early in the course with an overload of new concepts and terms. The authors slow down the introduction of transactions, giving students time to practice and gain mastery. This building-block approach leads to greater student success in their study of later topics in financial accounting such as adjusting entries.

Comparing Income Distributions - Statics and Dynamics (Hardcover): John Creedy Comparing Income Distributions - Statics and Dynamics (Hardcover)
John Creedy
R2,886 Discovery Miles 28 860 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Comparing Income Distributions brings together John Creedy's recent original research and analyses of income distribution. The book is concerned with both static, or cross-sectional, comparisons, and dynamic aspects of income mobility. The author presents new methods of depicting and measuring income mobility and poverty persistence. Income mobility is explored in terms of individuals' relative income changes and their positional changes within the distribution. The first half of the book covers a range of technical aspects of inequality measurement, including less well-known properties of inequality indices, and the decomposition of inequality changes into component contributions. The second half explores various aspects of the graphical display and measurement of income mobility. While the focus of the book is on methods, illustrative examples are provided using New Zealand data. Graduate students, public sector economists, and researchers interested in income distribution will welcome this important work.

Fintech - A Revolution or a Transitory Hype? (Hardcover): Imad A Moosa Fintech - A Revolution or a Transitory Hype? (Hardcover)
Imad A Moosa
R2,858 Discovery Miles 28 580 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This incisive book presents a critical evaluation of fintech, the use of technology to provide financial services. While fintech has been hailed as a game changer and a disruptor, Imad Moosa illustrates critical similarities between the present popularity of fintech and the dot-com hype of the early 2000s. Presenting a detailed account of the growth of the technology used in the provision of financial services, the book offers an expansive introduction to the fintech industry as it exists and functions in the 21st century. Moosa advances an in-depth assessment of the costs and benefits of financial technologies, debunking popular myths, highlighting the risks that necessitate regulation, and examining fintech-related fraud. In investigating the propaganda used to justify the 'war on cash' and glorify cryptocurrencies, the book considers whether fintech is an evolution or a revolution, ultimately characterising fintech as a transitory hype. Utilising empirical data and topical case studies to underpin its analysis of fintech, this timely book will be an invaluable resource for academics interested in financial technology. Its investigation into proliferating regulatory problems brought about by the emergence of small firms will also prove beneficial to politicians and policymakers.

Municipal finance and accounting (Paperback, 3): Mare-Lise Fourie, Lucas Opperman Municipal finance and accounting (Paperback, 3)
Mare-Lise Fourie, Lucas Opperman 1
R835 R762 Discovery Miles 7 620 Save R73 (9%) Ships in 7 - 10 working days

"The first edition of Municipal finance and accounting was published in 2007, and was the first comprehensive text on the principles and best practice of municipal finance and accounting to appear since Dr Jack Cowden's 1968 treatment of more or less the same subject matter. The first edition was revised in 2011, the main changes being the inclusion of considerable additional material on the legislative framework governing municipalities, an extensive revision of the chapter on municipal budgets in order to incorporate the approaches introduced by the 2009 regulations on budgets and reporting requirements, and various amendments to chapters 3 and 4 to reflect the advent of further GRAP standards and changes in important local government statutes. The example of the annual financial statements contained in Chapter 5 was entirely redone to accord with the requirements of GRAP, and the chapter itself amended to include summaries of most of the prescribed GRAP standards. The many changes in municipal finance that occurred since 2011 have now necessitated a second revision. All new enacted legislation and amendments to existing legislation have been included, as well as important impending legislation and new regulations, particularly those issued in terms of the Municipal Systems Act and Municipal Finance Management Act. Important MFMA circulars are also covered, as are other significant guidelines issued by the National Treasury. Various other matters of importance in relation to the financial administration and governance of municipalities are also dealt with, including municipal public accounts committees (MPACs), new approaches to grants, the supply chain management reporting framework and several significant court cases. An updated version of the annual financial statements has also been prepared. As with the original edition, this revised version deals holistically with all the key features of municipal finance and accountancy, with emphasis on the principles of sound financial governance in municipalities. It is designed for use in tertiary education and also for regular consultation by accounting officers, financial and non-financial officials and councillors in the performance of their duties. Municipal finance and accounting should be useful to anyone involved with, or interested in, the financial administration and governance of municipalities."

The role of a financial manager is to maintain a firm's liquidity and solvency by providing the cash flows necessary to satisfy its obligations and acquiring and financing the current and fixed assets needed to achieve its goals. However, the management of a firm's assets is not exclusively in the hands of a financial manager. Other functional departments, especially purchasing and marketing, play a significant role.

Finance For Non-Financial Managers thus provides an understanding of the principles of financial management as required to contribute favourably to the long-term success of a firm. Finance for non-financial managers explains the financial goals of a firm and illustrates how the principles of finance should be applied in creating wealth as opposed to simply maximising profit. With its ideal for anyone who has little or no prior knowledge of accounting or financial management.

In particular, Finance For Non-Financial Managers deals with the following:

  • the long-term goal of creating value and the short-term goals of profitability and liquidity;
  • analysing and interpreting financial statements;
  • using a financial calculator;
  • managing cash flow (liquidity), accounts receivable and inventory (stock).

Finance For Non-Financial Managers is aimed at managers involved in marketing, human resources, information technology and supply chain management, and for professionals such as engineers, architects, attorneys and medical professionals in private practice.
