R2,574 Discovery Miles 25 740 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Islamic Social Finance provides an introduction to the Waqf system, which has played a significant socio-economic role throughout the history of Islamic civilization. In a contemporary framework, Waqf creates new networks between micro-entrepreneurs, Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs), and entrepreneurship through voluntary donations made by individuals in a society. In other contexts, Waqf supports the financial system and contributes to the UN sustainable development goals (SDGs). The authors explore the relationship between the roles Waqf plays in realizing the SDGs, its contributions in many sectors of the economy, and the Waqf practices among the Southeast Asia countries, particularly Malaysia. They highlight the existing Waqf models and framework that have been used by many countries for entrepreneurship that can be used or adapted for the benefits of SMEs. This book is a comprehensive overview for academics, postgraduate students, entrepreneurs, and policy makers who wish to understand how Waqf can contribute to the economic progress of individuals and society at large.

Municipal finance and accounting (Paperback, 3): Mare-Lise Fourie, Lucas Opperman Municipal finance and accounting (Paperback, 3)
Mare-Lise Fourie, Lucas Opperman 1
R847 Discovery Miles 8 470 Ships in 7 - 10 working days

"The first edition of Municipal finance and accounting was published in 2007, and was the first comprehensive text on the principles and best practice of municipal finance and accounting to appear since Dr Jack Cowden's 1968 treatment of more or less the same subject matter. The first edition was revised in 2011, the main changes being the inclusion of considerable additional material on the legislative framework governing municipalities, an extensive revision of the chapter on municipal budgets in order to incorporate the approaches introduced by the 2009 regulations on budgets and reporting requirements, and various amendments to chapters 3 and 4 to reflect the advent of further GRAP standards and changes in important local government statutes. The example of the annual financial statements contained in Chapter 5 was entirely redone to accord with the requirements of GRAP, and the chapter itself amended to include summaries of most of the prescribed GRAP standards. The many changes in municipal finance that occurred since 2011 have now necessitated a second revision. All new enacted legislation and amendments to existing legislation have been included, as well as important impending legislation and new regulations, particularly those issued in terms of the Municipal Systems Act and Municipal Finance Management Act. Important MFMA circulars are also covered, as are other significant guidelines issued by the National Treasury. Various other matters of importance in relation to the financial administration and governance of municipalities are also dealt with, including municipal public accounts committees (MPACs), new approaches to grants, the supply chain management reporting framework and several significant court cases. An updated version of the annual financial statements has also been prepared. As with the original edition, this revised version deals holistically with all the key features of municipal finance and accountancy, with emphasis on the principles of sound financial governance in municipalities. It is designed for use in tertiary education and also for regular consultation by accounting officers, financial and non-financial officials and councillors in the performance of their duties. Municipal finance and accounting should be useful to anyone involved with, or interested in, the financial administration and governance of municipalities."

A Comparative History of Central Bank Behavior - Consistency in Monetary Policy in the US and UK (Hardcover): John H. Wood A Comparative History of Central Bank Behavior - Consistency in Monetary Policy in the US and UK (Hardcover)
John H. Wood
R3,482 Discovery Miles 34 820 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

It is widely believed that central banks have grown (the Bank of England) or were established (the Federal Reserve) to pursue the twin objectives of monetary and price stability. But why should they? Central bankers are people, too, whose behavior is presumably determined, like the rest of us, by their incentives and the information available to them. The author explores this question. Two sets of data confirm the reservations. Central banks have often worsened, even initiated, monetary instabilities by bailing out the risk-takers and their effects on prices, which depending on the quantities of money created by central banks, have often been catastrophic. The evidence suggests that central bankers have really been in business to support the politically powerful upon whose favors they depend, particularly high-spending governments and needy financial institutions. The book consists of several examples of this behavior and its consistency during wars and financial crises in the UK and US over the course of the last two centuries. Professors and students of finance will find A Comparative History of Central Bank Behavior to be a compelling and thoughtful exploration of how central banks have historically responded to and influenced financial markets.

The New Environment in International Accounting - Issues and Practices (Hardcover): Ahmed Riahi-Belkaoui The New Environment in International Accounting - Issues and Practices (Hardcover)
Ahmed Riahi-Belkaoui
R2,977 Discovery Miles 29 770 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Belkaoui examines several innovative forms of financial reporting and disclosure emerging in various countries and how they can hamper attempts to harmonize accounting standards internationally. Among these are value-added reporting, information for employees and unions, the impact of value-added taxation and cash flow reporting. He also tries to summarize recent developments in comparative management research and the impact it may have on practice. The author attempts to provide a broad overview of all of these topics, which should appeal to students and to accountants with an interest in the recent developments in international accounting. "Journal of Accountancy"

This volume thoroughly examines new devlopments in international accounting from economic and social, as well as from accounting viewpoints. It reflects the current tension between attempts at unification by international standard setters and the emergence of innovative forms of reporting, disclosure, and taxation, as various countries attempt to improve their reporting accuracy. The product of this tension is the gradual but steady emergence of new accounting, reporting, disclosure, and taxation techniques of importance to the accounting practices of every country in the international arena.

Tax and Transfer Policy Using Behavioural Microsimulation Modelling - Design and Evaluation (Hardcover): John Creedy, Penny Mok Tax and Transfer Policy Using Behavioural Microsimulation Modelling - Design and Evaluation (Hardcover)
John Creedy, Penny Mok
R3,134 Discovery Miles 31 340 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Combining theoretical and practical aspects of policy analysis, this book evaluates actual and proposed policy reforms to income tax and transfer systems, using a behavioural tax microsimulation model. It highlights how these models allow for the full details of tax systems and the considerable population heterogeneity that is found in practice. John Creedy and Penny Mok look at how such models can be used to obtain summary measures that are relevant in tax debates. These include elasticities of labour supply and measures of the welfare effects of tax changes, in terms of excess burdens. Chapters further examine how models can be used to search systematically, across a range of policy changes, for revenue-neutral reforms which result in an improvement, in terms of an explicit evaluation function. This will be a timely read for students of public finance, welfare and labour economics. The careful attention paid to metrics used in policy evaluations will also make this a useful book for researchers and policy advisors concerned with income taxation, social transfers, inequality and poverty measurement.

Rethinking Economics as Social Theory (Hardcover): Richard E. Wagner Rethinking Economics as Social Theory (Hardcover)
Richard E. Wagner
R2,847 Discovery Miles 28 470 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Taking an innovative look at the origins of economics, this forward-thinking book relocates economics from a materialistic general theory of rational action into an idealistic theory of social organization and individual action. Adding new insightful analytical methods such as complexity theory, graph theory and computational modelling to the original insights of the Scottish Enlightenment, Richard Wagner explores economics in an ever-changing society, looking at the key civilizing processes and the important social questions. Rethinking Economics as Social Theory moves away from the traditional review of analytical exercises and associated data and illustrates an enlightening scheme of thought where human societies are heterogeneous and not homogeneous and where change is continually in motion. Furthermore, Wagner theorises that economizing is a universal form of human action that plays out in numerous substantive directions and shows cooperation and conflict to have a yin-and-yang relationship. This illuminating book will prove an excellent resource for economists interested in working outside of comparative statics as well as social scientists looking for a broader vision of economics. Philosophers and those working in the field of biological sciences will also find this an informative read.
