Smart Grid Economics and Management (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Clemens van Dinther, Christoph M. Flath, Reinhard Madlener Smart Grid Economics and Management (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Clemens van Dinther, Christoph M. Flath, Reinhard Madlener
R3,990 Discovery Miles 39 900 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book focuses on market/regulatory issues concerning smart grid applications, business cases and use cases. It covers the most relevant aspects of the smart grid-design considerations, economics, legal aspects and system management-and includes exercises at the end of each chapter. Since renewable energy generation is weather-dependent, it is more volatile, which affects market prices and the need for flexibility options including demand side management. In order to balance supply and demand in a sustainable manner also with high shares of renewables, energy systems need to be enhanced by smart grid technologies. This co-evolutionary transformation of the energy system, economic, societal, political and regulatory domains is challenging and calls for an integrated and interdisciplinary approach. This book provides an essential basis to prepare lecturers and students for engaging in the new energy world.

Statistical Learning with Sparsity - The Lasso and Generalizations (Paperback): Trevor Hastie, Robert Tibshirani, Martin... Statistical Learning with Sparsity - The Lasso and Generalizations (Paperback)
Trevor Hastie, Robert Tibshirani, Martin Wainwright
R1,427 Discovery Miles 14 270 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Discover New Methods for Dealing with High-Dimensional Data A sparse statistical model has only a small number of nonzero parameters or weights; therefore, it is much easier to estimate and interpret than a dense model. Statistical Learning with Sparsity: The Lasso and Generalizations presents methods that exploit sparsity to help recover the underlying signal in a set of data. Top experts in this rapidly evolving field, the authors describe the lasso for linear regression and a simple coordinate descent algorithm for its computation. They discuss the application of 1 penalties to generalized linear models and support vector machines, cover generalized penalties such as the elastic net and group lasso, and review numerical methods for optimization. They also present statistical inference methods for fitted (lasso) models, including the bootstrap, Bayesian methods, and recently developed approaches. In addition, the book examines matrix decomposition, sparse multivariate analysis, graphical models, and compressed sensing. It concludes with a survey of theoretical results for the lasso. In this age of big data, the number of features measured on a person or object can be large and might be larger than the number of observations. This book shows how the sparsity assumption allows us to tackle these problems and extract useful and reproducible patterns from big datasets. Data analysts, computer scientists, and theorists will appreciate this thorough and up-to-date treatment of sparse statistical modeling.

Microbial Metabolism of Metals and Metalloids (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Christon J. Hurst Microbial Metabolism of Metals and Metalloids (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Christon J. Hurst
R2,585 Discovery Miles 25 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explains the metabolic processes by which microbes obtain and control the intracellular availability of their required metal and metalloid ions. The book also describes how intracellular concentrations of unwanted metal and metalloid ions successfully are limited. Its authors additionally provide information about the ways that microbes derive metabolic energy by changing the charge states of metal and metalloid ions. Part one of this book provides an introduction to microbes, metals and metalloids. It also helps our readers to understand the chemical constraints for transition metal cation allocation. Part two explains the basic processes which microbes use for metal transport. That section also explains the uses, as well as the challenges, associated with metal-based antimicrobials. Part three gives our readers an understanding that because of microbial capabilities to process metals and metalloids, the microbes have become our best tools for accomplishing many jobs. Their applications in chemical technology include the design of microbial consortia for use in bioleaching processes that recover metal and metalloid ions from industrial wastes. Many biological engineering tasks, including the synthesis of metal nanoparticles and similar metalloid structures, also are ideally suited for the microbes. Part four describes unique attributes associated with the microbiology of these elements, progressing through the alphabet from antimony and arsenic to zinc.

Post-Pandemic Sustainable Tourism Management - The New Reality of Managing Ethical and Responsible Tourism (Paperback): Marko... Post-Pandemic Sustainable Tourism Management - The New Reality of Managing Ethical and Responsible Tourism (Paperback)
Marko Koscak, Tony O'Rourke
R656 Discovery Miles 6 560 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Tourism, as with many parts of the economy, is at a pause-reflect-rest stage in the post pandemic world. This book puts forward some positive and practical concepts for the reset stage in terms of pushing towards wholly sustainable tourism. The COVID-19 pandemic has been disastrous in terms of the loss of human life, the physical and mental strains placed on large numbers of populations across the globe who have been quarantined in their homes and in terms of the costs of dealing with the pandemic and supporting business and citizens through the period. Tourism has been comprehensively damaged, not only in advanced economies, but also in poorer developing economies where tourism provides a vital source of income and employment. The problem has been complicated by the shattering effect on mass tourism, which has been far more sensitive to the shutdown of travel and accommodation than ethical and responsible tourism activities focused at a local sustainable level. Therefore this book evaluates how the pandemic and economic decline affects ethical and responsible tourism - the type of tourism which sustains and develops local communities in a balanced way for the benefit of future generations. It reflects on the position the authors established in "Ethical & Responsible Tourism - managing sustainability in local tourism destinations" and then determines how ethically and responsibly focused tourism may adapt, develop and maintain safety for consumers in the post-virus world. This book will be essential reading for students, researchers and practitioners of tourism, environmental and sustainability studies.

Climate Obstruction - How Denial, Delay and Inaction are Heating the Planet (Paperback): Kristoffer Ekberg, Bernhard Forchtner,... Climate Obstruction - How Denial, Delay and Inaction are Heating the Planet (Paperback)
Kristoffer Ekberg, Bernhard Forchtner, Martin Hultman, Kirsti M. Jylha
R654 Discovery Miles 6 540 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

In Climate Obstruction: How Denial, Delay and Inaction are Heating the Planet, Kristoffer Ekberg, Bernhard Forchtner, Martin Hultman and Kirsti Jylha bring together crucial insights from environmental history, sociology, media and communication studies and psychology to help us understand why we are failing to take necessary measures to avert the unfolding climate crisis. They do so by examining the variety of ways in which meaningful climate action has been obstructed. This ranges from denial of the scientific evidence for human-induced climate change and its policy consequences, to (seemingly sincere) acknowledgement of scientific evidence while nevertheless delaying meaningful climate action. The authors also consider all those actions by which often well-meaning individuals and collectives (unintendedly) hamper climate action. In doing so, this book maps out arguments and strategies that have been used to counter environmental protection and regulation since the 1960s by, first and foremost, corporations supported by conservative actors, but also far-right ones as well as ordinary citizens. This timely and accessible book provides tools and lessons to understand, identify and call out such arguments and strategies, and points to actions and systemic and cultural changes needed to avert or at least mitigate the climate crisis.

Energy Democracies for Sustainable Futures (Paperback): Majia Nadesan, Martin J. Pasqualetti, Jennifer Keahey Energy Democracies for Sustainable Futures (Paperback)
Majia Nadesan, Martin J. Pasqualetti, Jennifer Keahey
R2,671 Discovery Miles 26 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Energy Democracies for Sustainable Futures explores how our dominant carbon and nuclear energy assemblages shape conceptions of participation, risk, and in/securities, and how they might be reengineered to deliver justice and democratic participation in transitioning energy systems. Chapters assess the economies, geographies and politics of current and future energy landscapes, exposing how dominant assemblages (composed of technologies, strategies, knowledge and authorities) change our understanding of security and risk, and how they these shared understandings are often enacted uncritically in policy. Contributors address integral relationships across the production and government of material and human energies and the opportunities for sustainable and democratic governance. In addition, the book explores how interest groups advance idealized energy futures and energy imaginaries. The work delves into the role that states, market organizations and civil society play in envisioned energy change. It assesses how risks and security are formulated in relation to economics, politics, ecology, and human health. It concludes by integrating the relationships between alternative energies and governance strategies, including issues of centralization and decentralization, suggesting approaches to engineer democracy into decision-making about energy assemblages.

Forest Decline and Ozone - A Comparison of Controlled Chamber and Field Experiments (Hardcover, 1997 ed.): Heinrich Sandermann,... Forest Decline and Ozone - A Comparison of Controlled Chamber and Field Experiments (Hardcover, 1997 ed.)
Heinrich Sandermann, Alan R. Wellburn, Robert L. Heath
R5,221 Discovery Miles 52 210 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The idea for this book arose in 1993, after the Free State of Bavaria through its Bayrisches Staatsministerium rur Landesentwicklung und Umweltfragen (Bavarian Ministry of Regional Development and the Environment) decided to discontinue both the Bavarian project management (PBWU) for forest decline research and the multidisciplinary field research on the Wank Mountain in the Alps near Garmisch. Forest decline through the action of ozone and other photooxidants was a main topic of the supported re search in the Alps and will be a topic of new investigations in the Bavarian Forest. Many interesting results were obtained, but the researchers involved have not had sufficient time to allow reliable conclusions to be drawn. It was therefore decided to ask inter national experts for contributions in order to summarize the best available evidence of a possible link between ozone and forest decline - a topic which has been studied in the USA since the late 1950s and in Europe since the early 1980s. The original idea of Waldsterben as an irreversible large-scale dieback of forests in Germany was soon recognized to be wrong (Forschungsbeirat 1989). However, the new criteria used for the official German and European damage inventories (loss or yel lowing of needles or leaves, tree morphology) indicate that per sistently high percentages of damaged spruce and pine remain, and there is an increasing percentage of damaged beech and oak, with a high proportion of biotic disease (Forschungsbeirat 1989; UN-ECE 1995).

Extreme Value Theory with Applications to Natural Hazards - From Statistical Theory to Industrial Practice (Hardcover, 1st ed.... Extreme Value Theory with Applications to Natural Hazards - From Statistical Theory to Industrial Practice (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Nicolas Bousquet, Pietro Bernardara
R4,298 Discovery Miles 42 980 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

This richly illustrated book describes statistical extreme value theory for the quantification of natural hazards, such as strong winds, floods and rainfall, and discusses an interdisciplinary approach to allow the theoretical methods to be applied. The approach consists of a number of steps: data selection and correction, non-stationary theory (to account for trends due to climate change), and selecting appropriate estimation techniques based on both decision-theoretic features (e.g., Bayesian theory), empirical robustness and a valid treatment of uncertainties. It also examines and critically reviews alternative approaches based on stochastic and dynamic numerical models, as well as recently emerging data analysis issues and presents large-scale, multidisciplinary, state-of-the-art case studies. Intended for all those with a basic knowledge of statistical methods interested in the quantification of natural hazards, the book is also a valuable resource for engineers conducting risk analyses in collaboration with scientists from other fields (such as hydrologists, meteorologists, climatologists).

Ioannis Tsanis, Jian Wu, Huihua Shen, Caterina Valeo
R3,949 Discovery Miles 39 490 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Hydrodynamic and pollutant transport models are useful tools for evaluating remediation options for polluted water bodies. These models span the range from highly theoretical, fine resolution, physically-based designs to lumped, black-box representations of real world phenomena.
This book examines the numerical approaches used in hydrodynamic and pollutant transport modeling. First, the theory and physical basis of transport and mixing in lakes and coastal waters are provided. Methodologies that use a three-dimensional (3D) approach to predicting the fate and transport of pollutants are presented and this is followed by a presentation of alternatives to 3D circulation modeling as well as new advances in the field. These alternatives offer near 3D accuracy but without the computational burden. Illustrations of the calibration and verification of these models using laboratory data, as well as, field data are also provided. The models are applied to a diverse array of study sites ranging from The Great Lakes in North America to the coastal areas of Northern Crete.
*Presents the theory of hydrodynamic and pollutant transport modelling in lakes and coastal areas
* Thoroughly examines the issues and limitations of the numerical approaches used in hydrodynamic and pollutant transport modelling
* Demonstrates the calibration and verification of hydrodynamic and pollutant transport models using laboratory and field data

Marcus Borengasser, William S. Hungate, Russell Watkins
R2,283 Discovery Miles 22 830 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Land management issues, such as mapping tree species, recognizing invasive plants, and identifying key geologic features, require an understanding of complex technical issues before the best decisions can be made. Hyperspectral remote sensing is one the technologies that can help with reliable detection and identification. Presenting the fundamentals of remote sensing at an introductory level, Hyperspectral Remote Sensing: Principles and Applications explores all major aspects of hyperspectral image acquisition, exploitation, interpretation, and applications. The book begins with several chapters on the basic concepts and underlying principles of remote sensing images. It introduces spectral radiometry concepts, such as radiance, irradiance, flux, and blackbody radiation; covers imaging spectrometers, examining spectral range, full width half maximum (FWHM), resolution, sampling, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and multispectral and hyperspectral sensor systems; and addresses atmospheric interactions. The book then discusses information extraction, with chapters covering the underlying physics principles that lead to the creation of an image and the interpretation of the image's information. The final chapters describe case studies that illustrate the use of hyperspectral remote sensing in agriculture, environmental monitoring, forestry, and geology. After reading this book, you will have a better understanding of how to evaluate different approaches to hyperspectral analyses and to determine which approaches will work for your applications.
