This unusual early work is a fascinating read for camping and
survival fans. Chapters deal with every aspect of survival in the
wild from building and furnishing a wooden hut to travelling in
pathless woods, and from starting fires to making snow shoes, a
backpack and hunting weapons. Many of the earliest books,
particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now
extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing
these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions,

Coming of age in the rugged and unforgiving Southwest may not suit
the faint-of-heart, but it is the perfect landscape for a
compelling and humorous memoir of a lad who endured a mid-1900s
cowboy upbringing in rural Arizona and New Mexico. Growing Up
Cowboy chronicles the foibles and fortunes of its author, Ralph
Reynolds (a.k.a. Luna Kid), in an engaging and heartfelt fashion.
From wrangling ornery critters to finding first love, the Luna Kid
confesses all and regales the reader with vivid stories imparted
with an abundance of wit and humility. So saddle up and ride along
as the Luna Kid introduces you to a helping of the Southwest's
fascinating terrain and colorful characters. And along the way
shows you the irreverent side of adolescence adventure and the
human side of growing up cowboy. Growing Up Cowboy can be found on
the shelves of the National Cowboy Museum Library, and selections
from the book have been reprinted by the National Cowboy Hall of
Fame.

National Park Ranger, a.k.a., "Bleeding Green & Grey" tells the
stories that cover well beyond just the numerous and sometimes
daily heroic deeds that other present park ranger books more than
adequately validate. However, these new true-life tales not only
embrace such topics as the customary high adventure cases, the
sometimes humorous park visitors, and the dealing with the
unfortunate death & mayhem; but now include various accounts of
handling previously considered taboo matters such as limited
budgets, hiring difficulties, increasing outside agency assists,
and unfortunately, politics and bureaucracy. Also, something rather
different in dealing with the typical stoical federal government,
author Greg Moss actually enjoys to not only show the amusement
side of dealing with the unusual park visitor actions, but also
pokes fun of himself or other park staff. All those emergency
life-or-death call-out operations and boring administrative
meetings don't go off quite as smoothly as most other books on park
rangers currently portray, or even totally ignore. This author uses
a lot of dry humor, satire, and sarcasm in his book which makes you
laugh out loud, scratch your head, and say, "Really? Is that true?"
Coral Comes High is Captain George P. Hunt's account of what
happened to himself and his company during the initial stages of
the Peleliu invasion by the US Marines during World War 2. The
company sustains terrible casualties and is isolated in a seemingly
hopeless position for a nightmare forty-eight hours. Outnumbered
and outgunned by the enemy, they beat off all attacks and seize the
Point with a courage which is at the same time matter-of-fact and
almost superhuman.
Feminist Ecocriticism examines the interplay of women and nature as
seen through literary theory and criticism, drawing on insights
from such diverse fields as chaos theory and psychoanalysis, while
examining genres ranging from nineteenth-century sentimental
literature to contemporary science fiction. The book explores the
central claim of ecofeminism that there is a connection between
environmental degradation and the subordination of women with the
goal of identifying and fostering liberatory alternatives. Feminist
Ecocriticism analyzes the work of such diverse women writers as
Rachel Carson, Barbara Kingsolver, Ursula K. Le Guin, and Mary
Shelley. By including chapters from a comparable number of women
and men, this book dispels the notion that ecofeminism is relevant
to and used by only female scholars. After uncovering the
oppressive dichotomies of male/female and nature/culture that
underlie contemporary environmental problems, Feminist Ecocriticism
focuses specifically on emancipatory strategies employed by
ecofeminist literary critics as antidotes, asking what our lives
might be like as those strategies become increasingly successful in
overcoming oppression. Thus, ecofeminism is not limited to the
critique of literature, but also helps identify and articulate
liberatory ideals that can be actualized in the real world, in the
process transforming everyday life. Providing an alternative to
rugged individualism, for example, ecofeminist literature promotes
a more fulfilling sense of interrelationship with both community
and the land. In the process of exploring literature from
ecofeminist perspectives, the book reveals strategies of
emancipation that have already begun to give rise to more hopeful
ecological narratives. Feminist Ecocriticism provides a novel
integration of two important strands of contemporary literary
criticism that have often failed to make contact: feminist
criticism and ecocriticism. The openness of both feminist criticism
and ecocriticism to multiple, even incompatible perspectives,
without the insistence on unitary definitions of their fields, has
given rise to a new hybrid discipline: feminist ecocriticism."

Walden is one of the best-known non-fiction books ever written by
an American. It details Thoreau's sojourn in a cabin near Walden
Pond, amidst woodland owned by his friend and mentor Ralph Waldo
Emerson. Walden was written with expressed seasonal divisions.
Thoreau hoped to isolate himself from society in order to gain a
more objective understanding of it. Simplicity and self-reliance
were Thoreau's other goals, and the whole project was inspired by
Transcendentalist philosophy. This book is full of fascinating
musings and reflections. As pertinent and relevant today as it was
when it was first written.

Come along on an informative, whirlwind tour of urban
species—from intelligent crows to backyard lichens—and discover
that you are surrounded by wild nature, even in your own backyard.
When biologist Hanna Bjørgaas spots a fairy cup lichen in
Antarctica, she is surprised to recognize it from her own backyard
in Oslo. When she returns home, she embarks on a journey into urban
nature, visiting city parks, cemeteries, and concrete rooftops to
investigate the species that live in urban spaces. Along the way,
she meets corvids, songbirds, ants, pigeons, bats, sparrows, fungi,
and linden trees—and the experts who study their surprising
abilities to survive, and thrive, in the city. As Bjørgaas
discovers, urban nature—and its unique mixture of species that
have never lived together before in Earth’s history—is
valuable. More than half of the world’s human population lives in
densely populated areas—and plants and animals have followed us
into cities. Secret Life of the City invites us to pay more
attention to the sounds, sights, and smells of urban nature right
outside our door. A treasure trove of fascinating flora and fauna,
this wonderful book offers a plea to save our city plants, animals,
and fungi before we lose them, too.
