WATCH DOGS: THEIR TRAINING AND MANAGEMENT. By Lieut.-Col. E.H.
Richardson. A VINTAGE DOG BOOKS CLASSIC REPRINT. Originally
published in 1923, this extremely scarce early work on Guard Dogs
is both expensive and hard to find in its first edition. VINTAGE
DOG BOOKS have republished it, using the original text and
photographs, as part of their CLASSIC BREED BOOKS series. The
author was Commandant of the British War Dog School during the
Great War and was also responsible for several other books on War
Dogs. Although he was familiar with the training and management of
many different breeds, he will always be strongly associated with
his favoured breed, the Airedale Terrier. The book's three hundred
and sixteen pages contain sixteen detailed chapters and are well
illustrated with vintage photographs. The Story of the Watch-Dog. -
The Necessity for a Watch-Dog. - Uses of a Watch-Dog. - Purchasing
a Dog. - Training Dogs. - Feeding, Exercising and Grooming. - A Dog
on its Travels. - Breeding Dogs and Rearing Pups. - The Dog's
Health. - Kenneling. - Man-Tracking as a Protection. - Dogs in the
Great War. - Dogs for the Police. - British v. German Police Dogs.
Etc. "The first to welcome, the foremost to defend, Whose honest
heart is still his master's own, Who labours, fights, loves,
breathes for him alone." -Byron. This is a fascinating read for any
historian or enthusiast of the Guard and Watch-Dog types, but
especially for lovers of the Airedale Terrier. The book also
contains much information and advice that is still useful and
practical today. Many of the earliest dog books, particularly those
dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and
increasingly expensive. VINTAGEDOG BOOKS are republishing these
classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using
the original text and artwork.
Isabella Stewart Gardner was a force to be reckoned with. She
routinely went toe-to-toe with major museums and titans of industry
to purchase masterpieces, created a museum unlike any other, and
was famous for consistently flouting the social conventions that
governed women of her time. However, this book shows another side
of Isabella that readers may not expect: her love of dogs. Richly
illustrated with images from the collection and museum archives,
this volume allows readers to meet Isabella's favorite dogs (Kitty
Wink and Patty Boy), see the litters of puppies she bred, and
discover how her dogs were a comfort toward the end of her life.
Usually stern in photographs, Isabella - like many people - could
not help grinning when posing for photos with puppies. This
enthusiasm for dogs is also evident in her correspondence. As she
wrote excitedly to her art advisor Bernard Berenson: "Part of my
morning's work has been to try to induce two 9 days old fox terrier
pups to open their eyes again. They did once; and then clapped them
to, with a vim that seemed to say that the box they found
themselves in was not the ideal they had come to this world to
see!" Even the dogs of celebrities - both celebrities she knew
personally, and others she admired from afar - drew her attention.
This book also features some of the many photographs she collected
of notable people and their dogs, like the painter Anders Zorn and
his adorable pup Mouche and Caesar, the regal and loyal terrier who
belonged to King Edward VII and even marched in the monarch's
funeral parade. From gathering Renaissance masterpieces to raising
Fox Terriers, this book shows that Isabella approached all her
tasks with enthusiasm and dedication. By learning about her love of
her canine companions, this book presents a more human side of
Isabella than typically on display.
This is a truly fascinating book which will appeal to all dog
lovers with its enormously varied content of articles and items on
the dog culled from the literature of all nations. The Bull Terrier
is particularly well represented with numerous illustrations of
famous dogs and their owners. A wealth of advice, knowledge,
history, fiction and poetry is contained in the book's one hundred
and twenty pages. This comprehensive source of canine fact and
fable is interspersed with much humour and light hearted doggie
anecdotes. Keywords: Famous Dogs Dog Lovers Bull Terrier History

While training his German Shepherd for search and rescue, it was
obvious that the relationship building and leadership required to
work with his dog was exactly the same as with people. Dogs are
great labs to improve our leadership as they give you instant
feedback, have little or no ego, and if there is a problem, it's
always the human's fault.

Featuring comedic captions revealing what dogs are really thinking
while they do their number twos, this eye-watering collection of
photos is guaranteed to gross you out while cracking you up Dogs
gotta defecate, just like people. But unlike us, they do it out in
public. And we watch them in the act like the absolute weirdos we
are. Sometimes we even take pictures. What must our canine
companions think of all this? Well, Pooping Pets: The Dog Edition
is here to capture and share these priceless moments in all their
disgusting glory. Within its pages, you'll find the private
thoughts of dogs as they empty their bow-wow-wow-els, including:
Hehehe, you'll be picking this up in a minute! Err, could you not
watch me while I birth this butt-log? Bears aren't the only
creatures that lay one out in the woods! Not for the faint-hearted,
but the perfect gift for lovers of toilet humour, this
poo-blication is a steaming tribute to the bodily functions of our
four-legged friends.
The art of needle felting dogs can produce amazingly
hyper-realistic - almost taxidermic - results, and with a little
know-how, some needles and wool, and a few inexpensive accessories,
you can also needle felt like a professional. If you have ever
wanted to improve your needle felting and take it to a whole new
level to create lifelike dogs, this book, by world class needle
felting master Cindy-Lou Thompson of Chicktin Creations, will show
you how. Covering four different breeds of dog (Dachshund,
Chihuahua, Yorkshire Terrier and Poodle), with step-by-step
instructions and photos, Cindy takes you through the processes of
creating different body shapes, proportions, armatures, coats, and
blending, as well as realistic accessories such as eyes, noses,
mouths, ears, and nails. Learn how to achieve a professional finish
with different textured coats, clipping and shaping, and finishing
off, using a variety of mediums and methods, some of which Cindy
has designed and developed herself, and never revealed until now.
The colourful early history of the breed is here vividly told,
while in the chapters dealing with breeding, rearing, exhibiting,
field trials and police work the comments of leading fanciers will
be found of great value to the novice owner and indeed to Labrador
lovers of longer standing. The book is well illustrated with
photographs and it contains some striking and hitherto unrecorded
instances of Labrador intelligence and sagacity. "The Labrador owes
its renown not to any passing whim of fashion. It has come about
through the gradual realisation by dog-lovers of the high endowment
of brains, beauty and honest-to-goodness desire to please, which
has been increasingly shown through several decades by this grand
companion of field and fireside, who has so convincingly
demonstrated his right to be acknowledged as the prince of gun-dog,
and first-rate friend and guard into the bargain." Contents
Include: The History of the Labrador - Hints on Breeding Labradors
- The Labrador Puppy - The Labrador Retriever - Training to
Retrieve - Preparation for Show and Field Trial - The Labrador

This book is one of a series of textbooks on the Welfare of
Animals. This book discusses the welfare of dogs used for many
different purposes. The book has an international perspective on
the welfare of dogs in developed and under-developed countries. The
welfare of laboratory dogs which is of concern to many people is
discussed, as is the welfare of animals held in shelters waiting
for re-homing or euthanasia. The book successfully combines an
appreciation of how the health and nutrition of dogs has improved
with an understanding of the social difficulties dogs experience.
The book's outlook on the subject of dog welfare is positive.
