Learning one's cherished dog has cancer is a common experience
among dog owners today. Upon diagnosis, veterinarians may suggest
surgery or chemotherapy. But, our dog's cancer was too widespread
for surgery, and the harshness of chemotherapy seemed inappropriate
for this gentle-natured golden. Instead, we chose to celebrate the
life and spirit of our beloved pet each remaining day left with
him. What happened next is an adventurous true story of love and
courage. Last Summer with Oscar is a narrative case study about a
9-year old Golden Retriever's response to cancer. While my husband
and I came to grips with his diagnosis, Oscar made an amazing
discovery. Nestled among a patch of young trees were Slippery Elm
seedlings, and eating them became his choice of treatment. Oscar's
determination to live enabled him to return to this patch to eat
the leaves, thereby regaining his strength for continued walks with
his littermate, Winston. Oscar, the teacher, found new ways to
communicate with me, his student. Together, we explored
little-known remedies for cancer. The goodness of the journey
elicited kindness and goodness from others. Last Summer with Oscar
is filled with anecdotes that inspire love and a true belief in the
potential of humanity.
Parlez-vous Doggish? At long last, dogs will know just how smart their owners can be. By unlocking the secrets of the hidden language of dogs, psychologist Stanley Coren allows us into the doggy dialogue, or "Doggish," and makes effective communication a reality. Drawing on substantial research in animal behavior, evolutionary biology, and years of personal experience, Coren demonstrates that the average house dog can understand language at about the level of a two-year-old human. While actual conversation of the sort Lassie seemed capable of in Hollywood mythmaking remains forever out of reach, Coren shows us that a great deal of real communication is possible beyond the giving and obeying of commands. How to Speak Dog not only provides the sounds, words, actions, and move-ments with which we can effectively communicate with our dogs, but also deciphers the signs that our dogs give to us. With easy-to-follow tips on how humans can mimic the language dogs use to talk with one another, original drawings illustrating the subtleties of their body language, and a handy visual glossary and "Doggish" phrasebook, How to Speak Dog gives dog lovers the skills they need to improve their relationships with their pets.
Why DO people look like their dogs? Is it shared personality
traits, an expression of self-love, or do they grow together over
time like old married couples? This book explores the intense bonds
we develop with our dogs, which are far from only skin, or even
fur, deep. 50 photos by renowned animal photographer Gerrard
Gethings present insightful and fun depictions of dogs and their
humans, and humorous texts are included in the booklet to provide
clues about these 25 people and their furry best friends. The book
also includes behind the scenes photos and an interview with the
photographer.

'We live in a world populated by dog lovers, where many of us
regard them as members of the family. We are fascinated by them:
either anthropomorphising our pets or obsessing about the ways they
differ from us. And mountains - theatres of risk, drama and heroism
- provide the perfect stage for us to enact our canine fascination
in all its pathos and poetry. In short, the hills bring into focus
just how much we love being with dogs.' Dogs specialise in getting
on with humans, and tales of faithful hounds in hostile
environments form part of our cultural history. Award-winning
writer Helen Mort sets out to understand the singular relationship
between dogs, mountains and the people who love them. Along the
way, she meets search and rescue dogs, interviews climbers and
spends time on the hills with hounds. The book is also a personal
memoir, telling the author's own story of falling in love with a
whippet called Bell during a transformative year in the Lake
District. Never Leave the Dog Behind is a compelling account of
mountain adventures and misadventures, and captures the unbridled
joy of heading to the hills with a four-legged friend.

THE COLLIE By DR. O. P. Bennett And C.H. Wheeler. A VINTAGE DOG
BOOKS CLASSIC REPRINT Originally published in Washington 1924, and
republished in a revised and up-dated edition in the same year,
this extremely scarce early work on the Collie is both expensive
and hard to find in any edition. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS have republished
the revised edition, using the original text and photographs, as
part of their CLASSIC BREED BOOKS series. The authors were highly
respected figures in the dog world with Dr. Bennett being President
of the Collie Club of America, and C.H. Wheeler being an expert on
the history and origins of the Collie in the United Kingdom. Both
men realised the great need for a modern volume on the Collie. This
resulted in a work giving a fuller and more complete history of the
breed than was hitherto available. They also took up the question
of breeding in a more thorough manner than any other work of its
kind in existence. The book's three hundred and fifty six pages
consist of ten comprehensive chapters, illustrated with rare
vintage photographs of Collie Champions for the period beginning
circa 1874 through to 1923. Over two thirds of the work is devoted
to detailed records of individual Collies. Although published in
the U.S.A., the content is evenly divided between British Collies
and their history, and their American cousins. Chapters include:
Origin - History - Blue Merles - American Collies - The Typical
Collie - Breeding - Foods and Feeding - Kennelling - Exhibiting -
Common Ailments. This is a fascinating read for any Collie
enthusiast or historian of the breed, and also contains much
information that is still useful and practical today. Many of the
earliest dog breedbooks, particularly those dating back to the
1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly
expensive. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS are republishing these classic works
in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original
text and artwork.
Originally published in 1896 and updated in 1934. The object of
this book is to assist the prospective dog owner in choosing their
dog. Firstly it points out the uses and peculiarities in the
dispositions of the different varieties of dogs, secondly, their
respective properties; thirdly, to give an approximate idea of the
size of puppies at various periods in their life; and lastly, to
select from a litter those puppies which are likely to mature into
the best specimens. Detailed and illustrated chapters provide much
advice on some 100 breeds: Sporting Dogs - Gundogs - Terriers - Non
Sporting Dogs - Toy Dogs - Lesser Known Foreign Breeds. The book is
illustrated with typical specimens of nearly all breeds. Many of
the earliest dog books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s
and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive.
Home Farm Books are republishing many of these classic works in
affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text

For all the love and attention we give dogs, much of what they do
remains mysterious. Just think about different behaviors you see at
a dog park: We have a good understanding of what it means when dogs
wag their tails--but what about when they sniff and roll on a
stinky spot? Why do they play tug-of-war with one dog, while
showing their bellies to another? Why are some dogs shy, while
others are bold? What goes on in dogs' heads and hearts--and how
much can we know and understand? Canine Confidential has the
answers. Written by award-winning scientist--and lifelong dog
lover--Marc Bekoff, it not only brilliantly opens up the world of
dog behavior, but also helps us understand how we can make our
dogs' lives the best they can possibly be. Rooted in the most
up-to-date science on cognition and emotion--fields that have
exploded in recent years--Canine Confidential is a wonderfully
accessible treasure trove of new information and myth-busting.
Peeing, we learn, isn't always marking; grass-eating isn't always
an attempt to trigger vomiting; it's okay to hug a dog--on their
terms; and so much more. There's still much we don't know, but at
the core of the book is the certainty that dogs do have deep
emotional lives, and that as their companions we must try to make
those lives as rich and fulfilling as possible. It's also clear
that we must look at dogs as unique individuals and refrain from
talking about "the dog." Bekoff also considers the practical
importance of knowing details about dog behavior. He advocates
strongly for positive training--there's no need to dominate or
shame dogs or to make them live in fear--and the detailed
information contained in Canine Confidential has a good deal of
significance for dog trainers and teachers. He also suggests that
trainers should watch and study dogs in various contexts outside of
those in which they are dealing with clients, canine and human,
with specific needs. There's nothing in the world as heartwarming
as being greeted by your dog at the end of the workday. Read Canine
Confidential, and you'll be on the road to making your shared lives
as happy, healthy, and rewarding as they can possibly be.

K9 Commando: Police and Army Dogs from New York to Berlin Dogs have
much to teach us humans about selflessness, loyalty and
incorruptibility. As crime-fighters aiding the police, Special
Forces dogs, in particular, heed the call of duty with all the
courage that their owners and fellow officers have. Author Violetta
Kovacs presents 12 true and touching stories of these brave, tough,
smart and beautiful animals in her latest book, K9 Commando: Police
and Army Dogs from New York to Berlin. Kovacs gives a voice to
those brave and honorable officers of the K9 variety who cannot
speak for themselves. Her tales of their exploits demonstrate what
extraordinary creatures they are. For thousands of years, man and
his four-legged best friend have had a special bond. As guide dogs
for the blind, search-and-rescue dogs for the lost, sheep dogs for
shepherds or simply companions for ordinary people, dogs have
always taken their place at their masters' sides. This bond is no
more apparent than with the Special Forces K9 officers Kovacs
honors with K9 Commando. The touching stories in the book prove
without a doubt that a dog is not just an animal. It testifies to
the truly deep and honest emotional relationship between a police
officer and his dog.
