There are many myths about animals that have been repeated so many
times that most folks believe they are true. These myths are often
called Old Wives' Tales but I firmly believe that many of the
beliefs were created by males so I prefer to be politically correct
and call them OLD SPOUSE'S TALES. The essays in this book are meant
to dispel the Old Spouses Tales about animals and animal related
myths that have been propagated for so long that they are accepted
as true. Some of the truths brought out in this book include the
best way to de-skunk a dog (not tomato juice). The best way to keep
a dogs teeth clean without a toothbrush, what to feed wild baby
birds (not worms), the cause of antibiotic resistance in humans,
how to get rid of puppy mills, the best training rewards for a
puppy, are pit bulls really dangerous, do rodents need to gnaw, a
quick way to house break a new puppy and several dozen more
surprise truths about pets and animals in general. So buy the book
and get the answers to the questions above and many more that will
surprise you.
The ubiquity of references to dogs in medieval and early modern
texts and images must at some level reflect their actual presence
in those worlds, yet scholarly consideration of this material is
rare and scattered across diverse sources. This volume addresses
that gap, bringing together fifteen essays that examine the
appearance, meaning, and significance of dogs in painting,
sculpture, manuscripts, literature, and legal records of the
period, reaching beyond Europe to include cultural material from
medieval Japan and Islam. While primarily art historical in focus,
the authors approach the subject from a range of disciplines and
with varying methodology that ultimately reveals as much about dogs
as about the societies in which they lived. Contributors are
Kathleen Ashley, Jane Carroll, Emily Cockayne, John Block Friedman,
Karen M. Gerhart, Laura D. Gelfand, Craig A. Gibson, Walter S.
Gibson, Nathan Hofer, Jane C. Long, Judith W. Mann, Sophie
Oosterwijk, Elizabeth Carson Pastan, Donna L. Sadler, Alexa Sand,
and Janet Snyder.
Lying at the very heart of Libby Clegg's life and achievements is
the relationship with her Labrador Retriever cross guide dog,
Hatti. A relationship primarily based on trust, with a healthy dose
of respect and adoration. Libby Clegg is one of the UK's most
popular, recognisable and respected Paralympic athletes, having won
ten major gold medals, including two at the 2016 Rio Paralympic
Games. As a sprinter who has only peripheral vision in her left
eye, Libby runs with a guide runner while wearing a blindfold and,
in 2021, she will defend her 100m and 200m titles at the Tokyo
Paralympics. Libby is also well-known to the public from her
ground-breaking appearance in Dancing on Ice where, in addition to
her being the first registered blind person ever appear on the
show, she managed to reach the final, winning her millions of new
fans and making her a national hero all over again. From the moment
Libby wakes up until the moment she goes to bed, Hatti will either
be lying at her feet, sitting by her side or guiding Libby to
wherever she needs to be. Hatti is there for Libby through both the
highs and the lows and they have shared countless adventures
together, from spending the day in the Royal Box at Wimbledon where
Hatti overdid it on strawberries and cream to Libby trying to
overcome a severe bout depression after the Rio Paralympic Games.
Theirs is a partnership that works on every single level and, while
its circumstances may be unique, its story will be reassuring and
familiar to any dog lover. Libby and Hatti are a devoted couple
helping each other through life.

A Wall Street Journal bestseller. The powerful bond between humans
and dogs is one that's uniquely cherished. Loyal, obedient, and
affectionate, they are truly "man's best friend." But do dogs love
us the way we love them? Emory University neuroscientist Gregory
Berns had spent decades using MRI imaging technology to study how
the human brain works, but a different question still nagged at
him: What is my dog thinking? After his family adopted Callie, a
shy, skinny terrier mix, Berns decided that there was only one way
to answer that question-use an MRI machine to scan the dog's brain.
His colleagues dismissed the idea. Everyone knew that dogs needed
to be restrained or sedated for MRI scans. But if the military
could train dogs to operate calmly in some of the most challenging
environments, surely there must be a way to train dogs to sit in an
MRI scanner. With this radical conviction, Berns and his dog would
embark on a remarkable journey and be the first to glimpse the
inner workings of the canine brain. Painstakingly, the two worked
together to overcome the many technical, legal, and behavioral
hurdles. Berns's research offers surprising results on how dogs
empathize with human emotions, how they love us, and why dogs and
humans share one of the most remarkable friendships in the animal
kingdom. How Dogs Love Us answers the age-old question of dog
lovers everywhere and offers profound new evidence that dogs should
be treated as we would treat our best human friends: with love,
respect, and appreciation for their social and emotional
intelligence.
The ALSATIAN SHEPALUTE is an indispensable guide to this new and
unique breed that was created solely for the purpose of a companion
dog. Most breeds were bred for hunting or working and are
hyperactive. Being a companion dog this dog is laid back. This
breed was bred to never bark unless an intruder was around.
Lacksidasical means this breed does not care to dig up your yard or
run after cars. The Alsatian Shepalute was bred for his
intelligence and the ability to read body language. This breed pays
attention to what is going on around him and is easier to train
than most breeds. This new breed of dog shall resemble the old
extinct giant wolves that use to roam throughout the North. With
his yellow eyed stare he seems to look right through a stranger as
if to say Don't come any closer. MEANING OF THE WORD ALSATIAN(c)THE

THE THEORY AND PRACTICE OF BREEDING TO TYPE - ITS APPLICATION TO
THE BREEDING OF DOGS, FARM ANIMALS, CAGE BIRDS AND OTHER SMALL
PETS. By C.J. Davies. A VINTAGE DOG BOOKS CLASSIC REPRINT.
Originally published in 1928, this scarce early work on breeding to
type is both expensive and hard to find in its first edition.
VINTAGE DOG BOOKS have republished it, using the original text and
photographs, as part of their CLASSIC BREED BOOKS series. The
author was a highly respected breeder of his day who states: -
"Breeding to type is the business of every farmer and fancier. No
matter whether the breeder is dealing with show or merely useful
stock, he is always consciously or unconsciously selecting and
breeding for certain definite qualities which please his eye or
promise to increase the value of the stock in which he is
interested." The book's one hundred and eight pages consist of ten
comprehensive chapters including six full page photos. Chapters
deal with: - Breeding to Type. - False Doctrines. - Pedigree. -
Modern Heredity. - Mendelism. - Establishing a Strain. -
Inbreeding. - Methods of Mating. - Colour. - Heredity and Disease.
- Early Maturity. - Sterility. Etc. Also included are a Breeders
Table and a Table of Breeding Data. Breeding to type comes within
the province of a great number of animal and bird fanciers, and is
a subject upon which so many erroneous ideas are held. The author
successfully attempts within these pages to place before breeders
of every class of animal the rules which govern the production of
standard types. Many of the earliest dog books, particularly those
dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce, and
increasingly expensive. VINTAGE DOG BOOKSare republishing these
classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using
the original text and artwork.
