In Physiognomy and the Meaning of Expression in Nineteenth-Century Culture, first published in 2001, Lucy Hartley examines the emergence of physiognomy as a form of popular science. Physiognomy posited an understanding of the inner meaning of human character from observations of physical appearances, usually facial expressions. Taking the physiognomical teachings of Johann Caspar Lavater as a starting-point, Hartley considers the extent to which attempts to read the mind and judge character through expression can provide descriptions of human nature. She argues that the writings of Charles Bell, and the Pre-Raphaelites establish the significance of the physiognomical tradition for the study of expression whilst also preparing the ground for the rise of new doctrines for the expression of emotion by Alexander Bain and Herbert Spencer. She then demonstrates how the evolutionary explanation of expression proposed by Spencer and Charles Darwin is both the outcome of the physiognomical tradition and the reason for its dissolution.
Why is it that some children sail through school with no problem at all, while others find it a difficult or unhappy experience? And why do some children develop behavioural problems while others don’t? Cornelia Hansen believes that each child is unique and needs special management in order to thrive. While working on a Master’s Degree in Child Development, Cornelia was introduced to a longitudinal study done in the Fifties on temperament in children. At the time, she was also studying astrology and the idea came to her that she might be able to connect the child development study to astrology. After all, hadn’t the concept of temperament been with us from ancient times? Isn’t it still part of analyzing someone’s natal chart? The modern concept of temperament as being the cause of individual differences which appear at birth and continue over time has been widely accepted in the field of child development and appears in every child development textbook. In this pioneering study of temperament in children and young people, Cornelia examines copious case histories from her experience as a marriage, family and child therapist; with the welfare of the child firmly at the heart of the birth chart, she searches for ways to help parents understand their offspring better - and thus achieve a good outcome for everyone. Ideal for anyone working with children in the classroom, or in any capacity, this book will help parents, carers and teachers to discern the individual needs of a child that will enable them to flourish in the classroom and beyond.

The scientific and esoteric history of runic studies from the Renaissance to the modern era * Explores the five periods of runic revival: the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, the Romantic period, the early 20th century, and the late 20th century * Examines the use of runes by the foremost magicians and scholars of each era, including mystic and scholar Johannes Bureus, who developed his own integrated system of runology known as Adalruna * Reveals how the Nazi misguided use of the runes showed a lack of comprehension of what was being discovered by scientific rune scholars of the day In this exploration of the history of the runes from 1500 CE to the present day, Stephen Edred Flowers examines the five periods of runic revival: the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, the Romantic period, the early 20th century, and the late 20th century. For each period, he discusses both the scholarly studies and those focused on the esoteric mysteries of the runes--and how these two branches of study were at first intertwined yet diverged in later revivals. Focusing in particular on the first runic revival, Flowers examines the use of runes during the Renaissance by the foremost magicians and scholars of the era, including mystic and scholar Johannes Bureus, the "grandfather of integral runology," who developed his own system known as Adalruna. In his examination of the runic reawakenings of the early and late 20th century, Flowers looks at how the runes were employed as part of a reassessment of Germanic identity, one school of which led to Nazi Germany. He explains how the Nazi use and abuse of the runes was misguided and revealed a lack of comprehension of what earlier rune scholars had discovered through their extensive studies of the past. He also offers a fresh look at the work of Guido von List and clears him of his guilt by association with the Nazis. Detailing the multilayered history of the runes, the author reveals the integrated way the predecessors of today's rune workers thought and conceived of the runes, highlighting how their discoveries helped shape modern magical practices and scholarly studies. He calls for a return of integral runology as was practiced during the Renaissance and before. By reuniting the two branches of runic study, blending the scientific with the magical, we make way for new discoveries in runology and a chance for a full-scale reawakening of integrated runic knowledge.

Sunspot is a thought-provoking, humourous look at the relationship between dogs and their astrological signs. Be it a determined Aries, stubborn Taurus, spaced-out Gemini, melodramatic Cancer, kingly Leo, orderly Virgo, balanced Libra, intense Scorpio, enthusiastic Sagittarius, sure-footed Capricorn, curious Aquarius, or devoted Pices - the sign under which your dog was born can at least partly explain the reasons for its behaviour. The idea for Sunspot started as a joke when a friend complained to Laurie Birnsteel that her dog hated change. When asked if her dog was born in May, the friend replied yes. That's why, Birnsteel replied. Your dog is a Taurus, and Tauruses hate change. Thus began more than two years of research - including hundreds of questionnaires and interviews with dog owners - into the relationships of dogs and their signs - more specifically, how their astrological signs affect their behaviour. Each sign has its own chapter in Sunspot. Beginning with lists of the good doggy and bad doggy characteristics for each, Birnsteel proceeds to offer real-life examples of dogs behaving in ways consistent with their signs. At the end of the book, the questionnaires that pet owners completed are included. Whether you've lived, loved, laughed, or cried over a dog, this book is for you

In this intriguing exploration of human relationship patterns, Clare Martin compares two hitherto unrelated approaches, to see what, if anything, they can offer each other. Astrology has a rich historical, philosophical, and cultural background. Its categories are archetypal and its language is mythic, symbolic and imaginative. Personality theory is an extension of the medical model pioneered by Freud. Based on extensive empirical research and clinical practice, its approach is secular, rational and causal, and its language is analytical. Astrology and personality theory share the recognition that all human experience takes place in the context of relationship, between subject and object, self and other, internal and external, at both conscious and unconscious levels. We find ourselves in a world of duality and polarity, caught between opposites. Stories and story-telling weave these two approaches together and expand our understanding of human nature, with all its paradoxes and complexities. Clare uses a variety of well-known stories with relationship themes at their core - from enduring myths, books and films - to breathe life into the paradoxical themes of each axis in the birth chart, and each character style in personality theory. The stories we are drawn to - or repelled by - tell us more about ourselves. Recognising the stories in our own birth charts generates increased insight, psychic integration, flexibility, and greater acceptance of ourselves and others. Suitable for anyone interested in the way we develop, and for astrologers of all levels or none at all.
An ExtraOrdinary life is within your reach
A modern classic, as potent today as when first written in 1936. Rudhyar integrates modem concepts of psychology with elements of both Western and Oriental philosophies. He succeeds in presenting Astrology as a symbolic language by reformulating its basic concepts and focusing on viewing the chart as a whole.

He consulted it on many occasions and it is said to have "formed a stimulus to his most speculative and most successful enterprises." This book is intended to be a users' manual, not a reference book, and so has charts, diagrams, tables and cross-references to enable the interested practitioner to incorporate the Western Herbal Tradition into their practice. It synthesises and elaborates on all the extant information on the Western Healing Tradition as recorded by William Lilly and Nicholas Culpeper in the 17Cth and from the author's own herbal practice. It shows how using planetary energies and the wheel of the year deepens our understanding of the action of medicinal plants on the body and establishes the practitioner within their environment, allowing them to use planetary energies to determine the peak times to harvest and use herbal remedies and to locate health and sickness within the holistic paradigm of Western Traditional Herbal Medicine. For ease of use, the book is divided into two sections. The first details the philosophical framework within which traditional western herbalists can operate; looking at the four humours, and seven planets and the use of the diagnostic tool of the decumbiture chart. The work is so organised that the humoral system can be used without astrology, should that be the preference. The second part covers the practical application of the philosophy, how to collect, make and administer herbal remedies according to the planetary days and hours and the decumbiture chart. Examples of decumbiture charts will be included to show how the philosophy is used in practice. Lastly, a materia medica of common herbs is included. This fascinating new title by the best-selling Elisabeth Brooke will be of interest to anyone involved in the theory or practice of herbal medicine, particularly those who have been inspired by her other classic works including A Woman's Book of Herbs and Herbal Therapy for Women.
