"How to Airbrush Pinups" is a collection of ten sequences done by well-known and experienced airbrush artists. The human form, the human face, and skin tones, are three topics that beginning artists struggle to get right. And it is these three topics that make up much of this new book. Each of the ten photo sequences starts with the artist's sketch and moves, step-by-step, to the finished panel. The chapters provide an opportunity for the reader to sit down and 'talk' with the artist. These chat sessions include a discussion about not only the artists favorite airbrush, but how they learned their skills, who inspires them and how to avoid the typical beginners mistakes. The styles seen in "How to Airbrush Pinups" run the gamut from retro pinup and Vargas-style work of Edward Reed to modern stylized pinups of Tom Nguyen. With over 500 color images spread across 144 pages, "How to Airbrush Pinups" is an invaluable aid for anyone who wants to become proficient in painting pinups, nudes and portraits.

The nude figure has been the subject of art for centuries and continues to inspire contemporary artists. Figure drawing is part of the core curriculum at art schools and college art departments. Art models young and old play an important role in this creative process. So how does one learn how to become an art model? The Art Model's Handbook explains what you need to know to model for art classes and professional artists. You'll learn about the structure of figure drawing sessions, how to come up with interesting poses, costume modeling, professional conduct, finding work, and security concerns. Awkward but important questions about nudity and body issues are addressed. Guidelines for faculty and sample policies are also included. The book is based on the experience of the author, plus interviews with male and female models, artists, fine art photographers, and art school management. Cleopatra has been dead for twenty centuries, but her name still
resonates in the west. Her story has the status of a foundation
myth. As such, artists of all periods have drawn on it in order to
raise questions concerned with the world in which they found
themselves living.

A fascinating literary detective story charting the surprising, true history of a recently discovered painting of Shakespeare held by the same family for 400 years -- adding new drama to the Bard's life. When author Stephanie Nolen reported the discovery of the only portrait of William Shakespeare painted while he was alive, the announcement ignited furious controversy around the world. Now, in this provocative biography of the portrait, she tells the riveting story of how a rare image of the young Bard at thirty-nine came to reside in the suburban home of a retired engineer, whose grandmother kept the family treasure under her bed, and how he embarked on authenticating it. The ultimate "Antiques Roadshow" dream, the portrait has been confirmed by six years of painstaking forensic studies to date from around 1600, and it has not been altered since.
During 1945 Andre de Dienes (1913-1985) photographed a young model named Norma Jean. His subsequent five-year working relationship with the woman who became Marilyn Monroe is the beginning of de Dienes's career in Hollywood. He photographed celebrities, and his documentary work took him from Muscle Beach in Venice to sharecroppers working the cotton fields of the deep South. But his first love in photography was the female nude, and in his lifetime he photographed and published thousands of these pictures. Selected from the archives of his estate are seventy-five of the finest images printed by the artist. Reproduced actual size these prints are a time capsule of half-century old interpretations of female beauty.
Symbols of affluence, power and social standing, pearls have been highly prized throughout history for their beauty and purity. Jewellery fashioned from these lustrous gems has adorned some of the world's most elegant women, from Cleopatra to Coco Chanel. This book brings together a fascinating collection of paintings, drawings, prints and photographs of noble women, imperial princesses, society ladies and Hollywood divas wearing their finest pearl tiaras, necklaces, brooches and earrings. Engaging commentaries explain the context in which each image was created and provide glimpses into the life of the artist and his or her model. An insightful introduction charts the history of our fascination with natural and cultured pearls from ancient times to the present day. This book features the work of a diverse range of artists, from Botticelli, Rembrandt and Vermeer to Renoir, Sargent and Man Ray. It is an ideal gift for lovers of jewellery and anyone interested in the depiction of women in art.
Challenging prevailing theories regarding the birth of the subject, Catherine M. Soussloff argues that the modern subject did not emerge from psychoanalysis or existential philosophy but rather in the theory and practice of portraiture in early-twentieth-century Vienna. Soussloff traces the development in Vienna of an ethics of representation that emphasized subjects as socially and historically constructed selves who could only be understood-and understand themselves-in relation to others, including the portrait painters and the viewers. In this beautifully illustrated book, she demonstrates both how portrait painters began to focus on the interior lives of their subjects and how the discipline of art history developed around the genre of portraiture.Soussloff combines a historically grounded examination of art and art historical thinking in Vienna with subsequent theories of portraiture and a careful historiography of philosophical and psychoanalytic approaches to human consciousness from Hegel to Sartre and from Freud to Lacan. She chronicles the emergence of a social theory of art among the art historians of the Vienna School, demonstrates how the Expressionist painter Oskar Kokoschka depicted the Jewish subject, and explores the development of pictorialist photography. Reflecting on the implications of the visualized, modern subject for textual and linguistic analyses of subjectivity, Soussloff concludes that the Viennese art historians, photographers, and painters will henceforth have to be recognized as precursors to such better-known theorists of the subject as Sartre, Foucault, and Lacan.
The author mentions that the inspiration for this particular book came from the Fantasy Genre within popular culture. The images are inspired by the classic Fantasy Illustrations of such luminaries as Frank Frazetta, Boris Vallejo and Clyde Caldwell; Comic Books, such as Vampirella and Wonder Woman; Television shows like Xena Warrior Princess; And the proliferation of historic and fantasy reenactment groups. It helps that the author is an avid collector of prop weapons and armor. He's even acquired actual film used props from movies like First Knight, TV shows like Xena Warrior Princess and many reproductions from the likes of the Fellowship of the Ring series...many of these props are worn and weilded by the models in the book. In addition to the Warrior Princesses and Comic Book Heroines, you may find several characters that inhabit the worlds of fantasy. A Faerie, a vampire or two, sucubi, dancing girls, concubines and slave girls...many creatures to tickle your imagination. Warning: This book is intended for mature audiences.
Stars in My Eyes is a revealing and entertaining collection of celebrity portraits, rendered both in acute drawings and in finely observed prose. In the 1970s and 1980s, internationally known artist Don Bachardy made portraits from life, depicting the actors, writers, artists, composers, directors, and Hollywood elite that he and his partner Christopher Isherwood knew. He then made detailed notes about these portrait sittings in the journal he has kept for more than forty years. The result is a unique document: we enter the mind of the artist as he records the images and behavior of his celebrity subjects - from Ruby Keeler and Barbara Stanwyck to Jack Nicholson and Linda Ronstadt - during their often intense collaboration with him.
Veteran artist, illustrator, and teacher shows how simple and
rewarding it can be to draw two of the most challenging of artistic
subjects. 160 pages of figures; 25 halftones; 4 charts.
