Nana
R1,186 Discovery Miles 11 860 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This, the first book-length study of Hong Kong cult director Wong Kar-wai, provides an overview of his career and in-depth analyses of his seven feature films to date. The study also takes an intriguing look at Wong's commercials for the likes of Motorola, BMW, and Lacoste and at his music video for DJ Shadow. Stephen Teo probes Wong's cinematic and literary influences--from Martin Scorsese and Alfred Hitchcock to Manuel Puig and Haruki Murakami--yet shows how Wong transcends them all. This comprehensive and thoroughly accessible study confirms Wong's position as the star of the Hong Kong-global nexus and as a postmodern exemplar of world cinema.

Discovering Kubrick's Symbolism - The Secrets of the Films (Paperback): Nicole M. Berg Discovering Kubrick's Symbolism - The Secrets of the Films (Paperback)
Nicole M. Berg
R931 Discovery Miles 9 310 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Bringing to light the long-shrouded symbolism and startling spiritual depth that renowned director Stanley Kubrick packed into every detail of his iconic films, this book excavates the subtle ways that Kubrick calls attention to universal truths and shocking realities still pervading our society. This book cites the master director's use of encoded graphic symbols, signifying light effects, doppelgangers, esoteric color-coding, and framing techniques that communicate Kubrick's underlying topics. Beginning with an exploration of the inspirational themes of his classic science fiction film 2001: A Space Odyssey, including the multilayered meaning of the Monolith, this book then traces how those themes and symbols are encoded in the films that followed during the director's impressive career. It reveals the oblique methods Kubrick used to underscore a wide range of humanitarian alarms covered in films as diverse as A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, and Eyes Wide Shut, and the surprising links these films have to one another. Kubrick's early films such as Lolita, Spartacus, Dr. Strangelove, and Paths of Glory are also explored.

Fosse (Paperback): Sam Wasson Fosse (Paperback)
Sam Wasson
R495 Discovery Miles 4 950 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

More than a quarter-century after his death, Bob Fosse's fingerprints on popular culture remain indelible. The only person ever to win Oscar, Emmy, and Tony awards in the same year, Fosse revolutionized nearly every facet of American entertainment, forever marking Broadway and Hollywood with his iconic style -- hat tilted, fingers splayed -- that would influence generations of performing artists. Yet in spite of Fosse's innumerable achievements, no accomplishment ever seemed to satisfy him, and offstage his life was shadowed in turmoil and anxiety. Now, bestselling author Sam Wasson unveils the man behind the swaggering sex appeal, tracing Fosse's untold reinventions of himself over a career that would spawn "The Pajama Game," "Cabaret," "Pippin," "All That Jazz," and "Chicago," one of the longest-running Broadway musicals ever. Drawing on a wealth of unpublished material and hundreds of sources -- friends, enemies, lovers, and collaborators, many of whom have never spoken publicly about Fosse before -- Wasson illuminates not only Fosse's prodigious professional life, but also his close and conflicted relationships with everyone from Liza Minnelli to Ann Reinking to Jessica Lange and Dustin Hoffman. Wasson also uncovers the deep wounds that propelled Fosse's insatiable appetites -- for spotlights, women, and life itself. In this sweeping, richly detailed account, Wasson's stylish, effervescent prose proves the ideal vehicle for revealing Bob Fosse as he truly was -- after hours, close up, and in vibrant color.

Theatre Through the Camera Eye - The Poetics of an Intermedial Encounter (Hardcover): Laura Sava Theatre Through the Camera Eye - The Poetics of an Intermedial Encounter (Hardcover)
Laura Sava
R2,700 Discovery Miles 27 000 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

How do we experience theatre through film? Laura Sava critically engages with the filmic representation of theatre, focusing on a selection of art house and independent films which provide a sophisticated commentary on the interaction between the two media. Through an in-depth analysis of films such as Jacques Rivette's L'Amour fou, Pedro Almodovar's All About My Mother and Charlie Kaufman's Synecdoche, New York, this book analyses the embedment of theatre in film and the notion of spectatorial address. Using textual analysis in conjunction with concepts derived from narratology, performance philosophy, and film and theatre phenomenology, it explores the mechanisms of representation involved in the intermedial diegetisation of theatre in film.

The Cinema of Hal Hartley - Flirting with Formalism (Hardcover): Steven Rybin The Cinema of Hal Hartley - Flirting with Formalism (Hardcover)
Steven Rybin

Over the course of nearly thirty years, Hal Hartley has cultivated a reputation as one of America's most steadfastly independent film directors. From his breakthrough films - The Unbelievable Truth (1989), Trust (1990), and Simple Men (1992) - to his recently completed 'Henry Fool' trilogy, Hartley has honed a rigorous, deadpan, and instantly recognizable film style informed by both European modernism and playful revisions of Classical Hollywood genres. Featuring new essays on this important director and his films, this collection explores Hartley's work from a variety of aesthetic, cultural, and economic contexts, while also looking closely at his collaborations with actors, the contexts of his authorial reputation, his reworking of the romantic comedy and other genres, and the shifting economics of his filmmaking. This book, up-to-date through Hartley's latest film, Ned Rifle (2014), includes new scholarship on the director's early work as well as reflections on his cinema in connection with new theories and approaches to independent filmmaking. Covering the entire trajectory of his career, including both his features and short films, the book also includes new readings of several of Hartley's seminal films, including Amateur (1994), Flirt (1995), and Henry Fool (1997).

This new anthology compiles the best interviews, reviews, and articles pertaining to a man rightfully hailed as one of the most talented and respected directors in the history of film. Ingmar Bergman Revisited - Performance, Cinema, and the Arts (Paperback): Maaret Koskinen, Liv Ullman Ingmar Bergman Revisited - Performance, Cinema, and the Arts (Paperback)
Maaret Koskinen, Liv Ullman
R694 Discovery Miles 6 940 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Ingmar Bergman Revisited is a collection of new essays based on a major international symposium held in Stockholm in 2005 on the legacy of one of cinema's most towering figures. Moving beyond simple auteurist readings of Bergman as a cinematic artist, the writings here evaluate the theatrical and literary sides of Bergman's work to reconsider the achievements of the Swedish director, up to his last film "Saraband" (2003). Several essays result from research in Bergman's own personal archive, and amongst the subjects discussed are Bergman's stage adaptations of Shakespeare, his fascination with still photography and issues of identity, and the influence of philosophy and psychology on his work. With contributors including Thomas Elsaesser, Birgitta Steene and Janet Staiger, and a foreword written by Liv Ullmann, Ingmar Bergman Revisited forms a landmark study of one of Sweden's great cultural icons, emphasising how Bergman should be understood with reference to an eclectic range of his artistic interests.

J. Lee Thompson (Paperback): Steve Chibnall J. Lee Thompson (Paperback)
Steve Chibnall
R1,201 Discovery Miles 12 010 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

First published on the fiftieth anniversary of his directorial debut, this book is the first to examine the work of a man once hailed as the finest film-maker to emerge from the British studio system after the Second World War. J. Lee Thompson first came to notice as a talented teenage playwright before entering the film business as a scriptwriter. In the unadventurous world of British film-making in the 1950s, he established himself as a controversial figure known for his innovative ideas and public clashes with the Censor. Before being recruited by Hollywood he made a string of classic films including: Yield to the Night (1956), Ice Cold in Alex (1958), Tiger Bay (1959), North West Frontier (1959) and The Guns of Navarone (1961). Lee Thompson worked in the Hollywood industry into his late eighties, making nearly thirty films as a director and producer between 1960 and 1990. He remains the best known, however, for his first: the immortal thriller Cape Fear (1962). Drawing on extensive interview material, Steve Chibnall traces Lee Thompson's career in British cinema, and offers an analysis of his films which reveals remarkable, and previously unacknowledged, continuities of style and theme. This is a book for anyone interested in the history of British cinema, and particularly those who enjoy the best of 1950s and 1960s film.

Jack Clayton (Paperback): Neil Sinyard Jack Clayton (Paperback)
Neil Sinyard
R963 Discovery Miles 9 630 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In Francois Truffaut's opinion The Innocents was 'the best English film after Hitchcock goes to America'. Tennessee Williams said of The Great Gatsby: 'a film whose artistry even surpassed the original novel'. The maker of both films was Jack Clayton, one of the finest English directors of the post-war era and perhaps best remembered for the trail-blazing Room at the Top which brought a new sexual frankness and social realism to the British screen. This is the first full-length critical study of Clayton's work. The author has been able to consult and quote from the director's own private papers which illuminate Clayton's creative practices and artistic intentions. In addition to fresh analyses of the individual films, the book contains new material on Clayton's many unrealised projects and valuably includes his previously unpublished short story 'The Enchantment' - as poignant and revealing as the films themselves. This is a personal and fascinating account of the career and achievement of an important, much-loved director that should appeal to students and film enthusiasts. -- .

Cinema Between Media - An Intermediality Approach (Paperback): Jorgen Bruhn, Anne Gjelsvik Cinema Between Media - An Intermediality Approach (Paperback)
Jorgen Bruhn, Anne Gjelsvik
R724 Discovery Miles 7 240 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Cinema has often been seen as a form between media. Early cinema borrowed heavily from traditional performing arts, like theatre and tableau vivant; and the narrative forms of literature, particularly the structure of the novel, have played important roles in shaping narrative cinema. The list of influencing forms goes on, and includes music, architecture, and painting. Following the more recent historical advents of technical media like the VCR and the DVD, and digitalisation and its effects, the notion of cinema as a mixed medium has become even more prominent within film theory. So cinema both has been and is intermedial. However, we argue that the acknowledgement of this has not affected the practice of film analysis to any great extent. This book on cinema and intermediality therefore rethinks both cinema as a form and the practice of film analysis, using concepts and analytical tools derived mainly from the fields of media theory and intermediality.

Miklos Kiss, Steven Willemsen
R763 R720 Discovery Miles 7 200 Save R43 (6%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Narrative complexity is a trend in contemporary cinema. Since the late 1990s there has been a palpable increase in complex storytelling in movies. But how and why do complex movies create perplexity and confusion? How do we engage with these challenges? And what makes complex stories so attractive? By blending film studies, narrative theory and cognitive sciences, Kiss and Wilemsen look into the relation between complex storytelling and the mind. Analysing the effects that different complex narratives have on viewers, the book addresses how films like 'Donnie Darko', 'Mulholland Drive' and 'Primer' strategically create complexity and confusion, using the specific category of the impossible puzzle film to examine movies that use baffling paradoxes, impossible loops, and unresolved ambiguities in their stories and storytelling. By looking at how these films play on our mind's blind spots, this innovative book explains their viewing effects in terms of the mental state of cognitive dissonance that they evoke.

The authors examine Leigh's working method and films in the intellectual and social contexts in which they were created. All of Leigh's major box office successes are analyzed, interpreted, and shown to be among the finest examples of cinema.

Barry Nevin
R2,699 Discovery Miles 26 990 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Jean Renoir is widely considered as one of the most important technical innovators and politically engaged filmmakers in cinema history. Reassessing the unique qualities of Renoir's influential visual style by interpreting his films through Gilles Deleuze's film philosophy, and through previously unpublished production files, Barry Nevin provides a fresh and accessible interdisciplinary perspective that illuminates both the consistency and diversity of Renoir's oeuvre. Exploring canonised landmarks in Renoir's career, including La Grande Illusion (1937) and La Regle du jeu (1939), the book also considers neglected films such as Le Bled (1929) and Diary of a Chambermaid (1946) to present a rounded analysis of this quintessential French auteur's oeuvre.

Cimino: The Deer Hunter, Heaven's Gate, and the Price of a Vision (Hardcover): Charles Elton Cimino: The Deer Hunter, Heaven's Gate, and the Price of a Vision (Hardcover)
Charles Elton
R739 Discovery Miles 7 390 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The first biography of critically acclaimed then critically derided filmmaker Michael Cimino-and a reevaluation of the infamous film that destroyed his careerThe director Michael Cimino (1939-2016) is famous for two films: the intense, powerful, and enduring Vietnam movie The Deer Hunter, which won Best Picture at the Academy Awards in 1979 and also won Cimino Best Director, and Heaven's Gate, the most notorious bomb of all time. Originally budgeted at $11 million, Cimino's sprawling western went off the rails in Montana. The picture grew longer and longer, and the budget ballooned to over $40 million. When it was finally released, Heaven's Gate failed so completely with reviewers and at the box office that it put legendary studio United Artists out of business and marked the end of Hollywood's auteur era.Or so the conventional wisdom goes. Charles Elton delves deeply into the making and aftermath of the movie and presents a surprisingly different view to that of Steven Bach, one of the executives responsible for Heaven's Gate, who wrote a scathing book about the film and solidified the widely held view that Cimino wounded the movie industry beyond repair. Elton's Cimino is a richly detailed biography that offers a revisionist history of a lightning rod filmmaker. Based on extensive interviews with Cimino's peers and collaborators and enemies and friends, most of whom have never spoken before, it unravels the enigmas and falsehoods, many perpetrated by the director himself, which surround his life, and sheds new light on his extraordinary career. This is a story of the making of art, the business of Hollywood, and the costs of ambition, both financial and personal.

Louis Malle - Interviews (Paperback): Christopher Beach Louis Malle - Interviews (Paperback)

R750 R652 Discovery Miles 6 520 Save R98 (13%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A filmmaker whose work exhibits a wide range of styles and approaches, Louis Malle (1932-1995) was the only French director of his generation to enjoy a significant career in both France and the United States. Although Malle began his career alongside members of the French New Wave like Francois Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, and Claude Chabrol, he never associated himself with that group. Malle is perhaps best known for his willingness to take on such difficult or controversial topics as suicide, incest, child prostitution, and collaboration with the Nazis during World War II. His filmography includes narrative films like Zazie dans le Metro, Murmur of the Heart, Atlantic City, My Dinner with Andre, and Au revoir les enfants, as well as several major documentaries. In the late 1970s, Malle moved to the United States, where he worked primarily outside of the Hollywood studio system. The films of his American period display his keen outsider's eye, which allowed him to observe diverse aspects of American life in settings that ranged from turn-of-the-century New Orleans to present-day Atlantic City and the Texas Gulf Coast. Louis Malle: Interviews covers the entirety of Malle's career and features seventeen interviews, the majority of which are translated into English here for the first time. As the collection demonstrates, Malle was an extremely intelligent and articulate filmmaker who thought deeply about his own choices as a director, the ideological implications of those choices, and the often-controversial themes treated in his films. The interviews address such topics as Malle's approach to casting and directing actors, his attitude toward provocative subject matter and censorship, his understanding of the relationship between documentary and fiction film, and the differences between the film industries in France and the US. Malle also discusses his sometimes-challenging work with such actors as Brigitte Bardot, Pierre Blaise, and Brooke Shields, and sheds new light on the making of his films.

Norfolk Summer: Making the Go-Between (Paperback): Christopher Hartop Norfolk Summer: Making the Go-Between (Paperback)

R416 Discovery Miles 4 160 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Norfolk Summer presents the story about the making of a film starring Julie Christie and Alan Bates Joseph Losey's award-winning movie The Go-Between was filmed entirely on location in Norfolk in 1970. The film charts the tragic story of a young boy's loss of innocence during a hot summer and stars Julie Christie and Alan Bates as a pair of lovers crossing class boundaries in late Victorian England. The production brought together the playwright Harold Pinter, who adapted L.P. Hartley's elegant novel for the screen, the acclaimed director Joseph Losey and a cast of international stars for ten weeks' filming in and around Melton Constable Hall in north Norfolk - a time of happy creativity, some tension and a good deal of comedy. But the idyllic summer only came about after years of bitter battling over the rights of the book, and it was to be followed by yet more intrigue and high drama, which culminated in the film's triumph at the 1971 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the prestigious Palme d'Or.

The Films of Peter Greenaway (Paperback, New): Amy Lawrence The Films of Peter Greenaway (Paperback, New)
Amy Lawrence
R1,297 Discovery Miles 12 970 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Films of Peter Greenaway is the first critical overview of one of the most controversial contemporary film-makers. Trained as an artist, Greenaway began his career in cinema as an editor of government-sponsored films. He began to attract critical attention in 1980 with his epic mock-documentary The Falls, the first British film to be named Best Film by the British Film Institute in 30 years. Since then he has created the wittily elegant The Draughtsman's Contract, the strikingly unconventional Shakespearean adaptation Prospero's Books, and the disturbingly violent The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover. In-depth analyses of these and several other of Greenaway's most important works are examined within the context of the director's biography and artistic goals. This edition also includes stills from Greenaway's feature films, as well as his own drawings.
