Dr. Reddy points out that the key to economic success, particularly for the less developed countries of the world, is technology--but only when properly applied. Despite years of help through technology transfer, however, many LDCs are still improverished. This leads him to conclude that either the wrong technologies were transferred or the right ones were not transfered. His book thus focuses on ways in which LDCs can improve their economic growth through technology transfer, arguing that it is the assimilation of technology into their socioeconomic and cultural structures that is critical to their economic development, not the indiscriminate borrowing from advanced nations. In doing so, Dr. Reddy presents a behavioral model which proves that technology absorption is just as--if not more--important than a simple transfer process. A network of Intermediate Technology Transfer Units (ITTUs) has been established within Ghana, serving to foster and develop small-scale informal industry. Since the founding of the first ITTU in 1980 the idea has flourished with such units being set up throughout Ghana.;The objective of the Intermediate Technology Transfer Unit is to introduce artisans to new production techniques and the manufacture of new products. It consists of a group of basic engineering workshops located in the heart of an informal industrial area, engaging in such processes as metal machining, welding and blacksmithing. The ITTU is a dynamic operation, handing over activities to its clients as they become competent, and moving to explore new activities. Lime is not only an important building material but an essential ingredient in many industrial processes, such as agriculture and sugar manufacture. As a binder in the construction industry, it is simpler and cheaper to produce than Portland cement and yet just as effective for most building requirements in the Third World. As such, lime has a valuable role to play in the development process. The experience at Chenkumbi in central Malawi has demonstrated that vertical shaft kiln technology (VSK) can be adapted to small-scale production and produce high grade chemical lime economically. Another benefit of this technology over traditional methods is that coal or plantation-grown softwoods can be burnt in preference to native hardwoods - a process that has been leading to severe deforestation in the region.

Micro-hydro is a useful way of providing power to houses, workshops or villages that need an independent supply. For many remote areas beyond the reach of a national grid, micro-hydro is the only economic option. Where flow is limited, but high heads are available, the Pelton wheel is one of the most useful turbines. The Micro-hydro Pelton Turbine Manual is written to enable the reader to design and manufacture Pelton turbines with capacities from a few hundred Watts to around 100kw, though much of the information is relevant for larger units too.
