The Economics of Groundwater Management in Arid Countries - Theory, International Experience and a Case Study of Jordan... The Economics of Groundwater Management in Arid Countries - Theory, International Experience and a Case Study of Jordan (Hardcover)
Manuel Schiffler
R3,256 Discovery Miles 32 560 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Groundwater is being depleted on a large scale in many arid and semi-arid parts of the world. It is often said that this precious resource is being wasted at the expense of future generations. But should ground-water depletion be avoided at any price? Or is depletion desirable in certain circumstances? If there is to be a reduction in groundwater depletion, how can it be achieved? And how can limited water resources be allocated to their most valuable uses?

Food and Nutrition Security in Southern African Cities (Hardcover): Bruce Frayne, Jonathan Crush, Cameron McCordic Food and Nutrition Security in Southern African Cities (Hardcover)
Bruce Frayne, Jonathan Crush, Cameron McCordic
R4,143 Discovery Miles 41 430 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Urban population growth is extremely rapid across Africa and this book places urban food and nutrition security firmly on the development and policy agenda. It shows that current efforts to address food poverty in Africa that focus entirely on small-scale farmers, to the exclusion of broader socio-economic and infrastructural approaches, are misplaced and will remain largely ineffective in ameliorating food and nutrition insecurity for the majority of Africans. Using original data from the African Food Security Urban Network's (AFSUN) extensive database it is demonstrated that the primary food security challenge for urban households is access to food. Already linked into global food systems and value chains, Africa's supply of food is not necessarily in jeopardy. Rather, the widespread poverty and informal urban fabric that characterizes Africa's emerging cities impinge directly on households' capacity to access food that is readily available. Through the analysis of empirical data collected from 6,500 households in eleven cities in nine countries in Southern Africa, the authors identify the complexity of factors and dynamics that create the circumstances of widespread food and nutrition insecurity under which urban citizens live. They also provide useful policy approaches to address these conditions that currently thwart the latent development potential of Africa's expanding urban population.

China's Energy Security - A multidimensional perspective (Paperback): Giulia Romano, Jean-Francois Meglio China's Energy Security - A multidimensional perspective (Paperback)
Giulia Romano, Jean-Francois Meglio
R1,476 Discovery Miles 14 760 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A secure supply of energy is essential for all nations, to sustain their economy, and indeed their very survival. This subject is especially important in the case of China, as China's booming economy and consequent demand for energy is affecting the whole world, and in turn potentially driving realignments in international relations. Moreover, as this book argues, energy security should be considered more broadly, to include issues of sustainability, environmental protection and the domestic organisation of energy policy and energy supply. This book presents a comprehensive picture of China's energy security. It covers all energy sectors - coal, oil, gas, renewables; international relations with all major sources of energy supply - the Middle East, Central Asia, Africa; and key areas of domestic policy making and supply.

Environmental Movements in Asia (Paperback): Arne Kalland, Gerard Persoon Environmental Movements in Asia (Paperback)
Arne Kalland, Gerard Persoon
R1,751 Discovery Miles 17 510 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Paints a general picture of the Asian situation, backing it up with several case studies. Two major points are made: environmental campaigns in Asia tend to have a local focus and they cannot be understood in terms of environmental issues alone.

Multidimensional Strategic Outlook on Global Competitive Energy Economics and Finance (Hardcover): Hasan Dincer, Serhat Yuksel Multidimensional Strategic Outlook on Global Competitive Energy Economics and Finance (Hardcover)
Hasan Dincer, Serhat Yuksel
R2,451 Discovery Miles 24 510 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Economical energy supply is vital for a country's financial success, and factors such as price, continuity, environmental pollution and the country's own energy resources are important contributors. Multidimensional Strategic Outlook on Global Competitive Energy Economics and Finance analyses current trends in energy production and use, with a focus on technological developments that contribute to the reduction of price in energy production and renewable energy sources that provide continuity in energy production and do not emit carbon into the atmosphere. Expanding on the current literature, this book focuses purely on current issues that can increase energy efficiency, while proposing strategies to use energy more effectively and efficiently. The strategies presented in this book will be a significant guide to both academics and industry professionals.

Refugees, Environment and Development (Paperback): Richard Black Refugees, Environment and Development (Paperback)
Richard Black
R2,057 Discovery Miles 20 570 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Refugees, Environment and Development is concerned with the complex interrelationships between forced migration, natural resource management and 'sustainable development'. The book challenges the growing rhetoric that refugees 'cause' environmental degradation, and that environmental decline is promoting a new wave of 'environmental refugees'. Drawing on examples from Africa, Asia and Latin America, as well as detailed case studies of the Rwandan emergency of 1994-96, and lesser known refugee movements to Guinea and Senegal in West Africa, the book argues against a neo-Malthusian view of the relationship between population, environment and migration. The author explores alternative approaches to the dynamic processes of social and environmental change in refugee situations. This is an ideal text for undergraduate and postgraduate students concerned with environment, development and migration studies, as well as policy-makers and practitioners in the field.

Environmentalism: An Evolutionary Approach (Hardcover): Douglas Spieles Environmentalism: An Evolutionary Approach (Hardcover)
Douglas Spieles
R4,596 Discovery Miles 45 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The premise of this book is that our environmental dilemmas are products of biological and sociocultural evolution, and that through an understanding of evolution we can reframe debates of thought and action. The purpose is to explain the wide variety of environmental worldviews, their origins, commonalities, points of contention, and their implications for the modern environmental movement. In three parts covering the origins, evolution and future of environmentalism, it offers instructors and students a framework on which to map theory, case studies and classical literature. It is shown that environmentalism can be described in terms of six human values-utility, stability, equity, beauty, sanctity, and morality-and that these are deeply rooted in our biological and cultural origins. In building this case the book draws upon ecology, philosophy, psychology, history, biology, economics, spirituality, and aesthetics, but rather than consider these all independently it integrates them to craft a mosaic narrative of our species and its home. From our evolutionary origins a story emerges; it is the story of humankind, how we have come to threaten our own existence, and why we seem to have such difficulty in acting together to ensure our common future. Understanding our environmental problems in evolutionary terms gives us a way forward. It suggests an environmentalism in which material views of human life include spirituality, in which our anthropocentric behaviors incorporate ecological function, and in which environmental problems are addressed by the intentional relation of humans to the nonhuman world and to one another. Aimed at students taking courses in environmental studies, the book brings clarity to a complex and, at times, confusing array of ideas and concepts of environmentalism.

A Water Quality Assessment of the Former Soviet Union (Hardcover, illustrated edition): Vitaly Kimstach, Michel Meybeck,... A Water Quality Assessment of the Former Soviet Union (Hardcover, illustrated edition)
Vitaly Kimstach, Michel Meybeck, Ellysar Baroudy
R7,942 Discovery Miles 79 420 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume deals with water quality issues drawing on examples from around the former Soviet Union. It commences by providing the background to the natural water resources and composition of surface and ground waters of the former Soviet Union and then proceeds to examine the influence of human activity on those resources and water quality systems. With unique material not previously available in English, the text presents detailed analyses of generic problems and possible solutions applicable beyond the former Soviet Union. It covers: salinization, eutrophication and acidification; heavy metal, organic and microbial pollution; ecological state of water bodies; water quality monitoring systems in the former USSR; and impact of pollution on fisheries. With more than 200 line illustrations and tables, the long term detailed case studies of the Lower Don Basin, the Amy Darya river, the Rybinsk reservoir, the Dnieper river, Lakes Baikal and Ladoga, and water resources in Moscow and the Moscow region, should enable valuable lessons in environmental management to be learnt. The text should be a valuable source of information and case studies for professionals in government, national and

The Dynamics of EU External Energy Relations - Fighting for Energy (Hardcover): Francesca Batzella The Dynamics of EU External Energy Relations - Fighting for Energy (Hardcover)
Francesca Batzella
R4,429 Discovery Miles 44 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Dynamics of EU External Energy Relations examines the behaviour of the European Commission in EU external energy relations paying particular attention to the dynamics existing between the Commission and the member states. It examines the Commission as a constrained policy-entrepreneur trying to expand its power, budget and competences, yet frustrated by member states protective of their national sovereignty. Analysing the Commission as agent and the member states as its principals, the book proposes a more nuanced examination of behaviour where the agent tries to satisfy its own interests but is still responsive to the preferences of the principals. Using a wide range of original primary and secondary data, the book argues that EU external energy relations reflect the dynamics of the relations between the Commission and the member states. This book will be of key interest to scholars and students of European Union studies and politics, EU energy and foreign policy, and more broadly to European politics and international relations.

China and Transboundary Water Politics in Asia (Hardcover): Hongzhou Zhang, Mingjiang Li China and Transboundary Water Politics in Asia (Hardcover)
Hongzhou Zhang, Mingjiang Li
R4,148 Discovery Miles 41 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Water-related conflicts have a long history and will continue to be a global and regional problem. Asia, with 1.5 billion of its people living in shared river basins, and with very few transboundary rivers governed by treaties, is especially prone to such conflicts. The key to mitigating transboundary water conflicts and advancing cooperation in Asia is largely in the hands of China, the upstream country for most of Asia's major transboundary rivers. To avert the looming water crisis, apart from spending billions of dollars on domestic water transfer projects such as the South-North Water Diversion Megaproject, as well as on water conservancy and pollution abatement, China has sought to utilize the water resources of the major rivers that run across borders with neighbouring countries. On these transboundary rivers, China has built or plans to build large dams for hydroelectricity and major water diversion facilities, which has triggered anxiety and complaints from downstream countries and criticism from the international society. This book aims to systematically examine the complex reality of water contestations between China and its neighbouring countries. It provides a discussion on transboundary hydropolitics beyond the state-centric geopolitical perspective to dig into various political, institutional, legal, historical, geographical, and demographic factors that affect China's policies and practices towards transboundary water issues. This book also provides a collection of comparative case studies on China's water resources management on the Mekong River with other five riparian states in the Lower Mekong region: the Salween River with Myanmar, the Brahmaputra River with India, the Amur River with Russia and Mongolia, the Illy and Irtysh Rivers with Kazakhstann, and the Yalu and Tumen Rivers with North Korea. Furthermore, this book sheds light on China's future role in global water governance.

Ben Backwell
R4,134 Discovery Miles 41 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The wind power business has grown from a niche sector within the energy industry to a global industry that attracts substantial investment. In Europe wind has become the biggest source of new power generation capacity, while also successfully competing with the gas, coal and nuclear sectors in China and the US. Wind Power looks at the nations, companies and people fighting for control of one of the world's fastest growing new industries and how we can harness one of the planet's most powerful energy resources. The book examines the challenges the sector faces as it competes for influence and investment with the fossil fuel industry across the globe. Over the course of this volume, Backwell analyses the industry climbers, the investment trends and the technological advancements that will define the future of wind energy. This second edition is revised throughout and contains new material on frontier wind markets and industry consolidation, as well as the cost reductions and market gains that led to 2015 being a landmark year for the big wind turbine companies. This is an important resource for professionals working in wind and wider renewable industries, energy finance, conventional energy companies and government as well as researchers, students, journalists and the general public.

The Natural Wealth of Nations - Harnessing the Market and the Environment (Hardcover): David Roodman The Natural Wealth of Nations - Harnessing the Market and the Environment (Hardcover)
David Roodman
R3,685 Discovery Miles 36 850 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Every year, the world's governments spend over US $700 billion subsidizing activities that harm the environment. The Natural Wealth of Nations shows how cutting these wasteful subsidies can actually boost the economy, save tax and help the environment. By raising taxes on harmful activities like air pollution whilst cutting taxes on payrolls and profits, pollution is discouraged and both work and investment boosted. In a comprehensive global survey, The Natural Wealth of Nations provides examples from Sweden to Spain to Malaysia of the growing number of countries that are successfully using these market-based approaches to clean up their environments. This is an accessible, practical book offering concrete proposals for cleaning up the world's environment and overcoming ecological ignorance.

Food Sovereignty, Agroecology and Biocultural Diversity - Constructing and contesting knowledge (Hardcover): Michel P. Pimbert Food Sovereignty, Agroecology and Biocultural Diversity - Constructing and contesting knowledge (Hardcover)
Michel P. Pimbert
R4,163 Discovery Miles 41 630 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Contestations over knowledge - and who controls its production - are a key focus of social movements and other actors that promote food sovereignty, agroecology and biocultural diversity. This book critically examines the kinds of knowledge and ways of knowing needed for food sovereignty, agroecology and biocultural diversity. 'Food sovereignty' is understood here as a transformative process that seeks to recreate the democratic realm and regenerate a diversity of autonomous food systems based on agroecology, biocultural diversity, equity, social justice and ecological sustainability. It is shown that alternatives to the current model of development require radically different knowledges and epistemologies from those on offer today in mainstream institutions (including universities, policy think tanks and donor organizations). To achieve food sovereignty, agroecology and biocultural diversity, there is a need to re-imagine and construct knowledge for diversity, decentralisation, dynamic adaptation and democracy. The authors critically explore the changes in organizations, research paradigms and professional practice that could help transform and co-create knowledge for a new modernity based on plural definitions of wellbeing. Particular attention is given to institutional, pedagogical and methodological innovations that can enhance cognitive justice by giving hitherto excluded citizens more power and agency in the construction of knowledge. The book thus contributes to the democratization of knowledge and power in the domain of food, environment and society. R4,168 Discovery Miles 41 680 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

China and its neighbours face a series of water security issues, in which international law plays a vital role. Paramount to both policymakers and researchers in the field of water law, the current status of transboundary water cooperation schemes and how these operate in China is of global significance. Grounded in international experience, this comprehensive volume provides readers with an up-to-date overview of current international transboundary water resource sharing policies and practices, including detailed case studies at both domestic and international levels. The authors discuss existing international laws, treaties, and principles that may stimulate transboundary water cooperation and dialogue, and then analyse a number of international experiences with treaties in North America, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia. They take stock of China's water resource issues, legal practices and options, examine case studies of China's southern shared rivers, and explore some innovative approaches to cooperative management of shared waters within China. The articles in this book were originally published in the journal Water International.

The River Dragon Has Come! - Three Gorges Dam and the Fate of China's Yangtze River and Its People (Paperback): Dai Qing,... The River Dragon Has Come! - Three Gorges Dam and the Fate of China's Yangtze River and Its People (Paperback)
Dai Qing, John G. Thibodeau, Michael R. Williams, Qing Dai, Ming Yi, …
R1,405 Discovery Miles 14 050 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In the ongoing courageous struggle of a relatively small group of Chinese to prevent the completion of the Three Gorges Dam in China, Dai Qing is the outspoken leader whose eloquent voice is always heard despite threats and intimidation by the Chinese authorities to silence it. Dai Qing, an investigative journalist and author with a wide audience in China and abroad, compiled this book of essays and field reports assessing the impact of the Three Gorges megadam now under construction at Sandouping in China's Hubei province at great risk to her own freedom. This book is an effort to prevent history from repeating itself ten-fold (a reference to the great floods in 1975 during which over 60 dams collapsed and at least 100,000 people lost their lives) if the 39 billion cubic metres of water in the Three Gorges reservoir ever escapes by natural or man-made catastrophes. These comprehensive essays reveal the deep rooted problems presented by the Three Gorges project that the government is attempting to disguise or suppress. The main concerns are population resettlement and human rights, the irreversible environmental and economic impact, the loss of cultural antiquities and historical sites, military considerations, and hidden dam disasters from the past. Opponents of the dam are attempting to kill the project or at least reduce the size of the megadam now planned to be the biggest, most expensive and, incidentally, the most hazardous of all hydro-electric projects on this planet.

Transport Policy and the Environment (Hardcover): David Banister Transport Policy and the Environment (Hardcover)
David Banister
R1,322 Discovery Miles 13 220 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

There is currently considerable concern with limiting the growth of transport demand, the use of resources and related pollution. This book makes a major contribution to the debate on transport and the environment and is likely to become a benchmark against which new research will be developed. Transport Policy and the Environment presents for the first time the results of extensive research: *quantifying the contribution of transport to environmental problems. *assessing the options for resolving those problems. *investigating the conflicts arising from policy implementation. *developing new and better methods of data collection and analysis. It brings together the results of a major research programme funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council on Transport and the Environment and provides a clear view on current policy. It is the major contribution that UK research has made to the debate and provides the first set of substantive results on the effectiveness of policy, and the means by which the impact can be measured and assessed.

Energy Plant Species - Their Use and Impact on Environment and Development (Hardcover): N.El Bassam Energy Plant Species - Their Use and Impact on Environment and Development (Hardcover)
N.El Bassam
R4,143 Discovery Miles 41 430 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Biomass currently accounts for about 15 per cent of the global primary energy consumption and is particularly important as an energy resource in developing countries. It will undoubtedly play an increasing role in the world's energy consumption. Which crops make up this large percentage of our energy resources? Where do they grow and what can be done to boost the levels of production? What impact does their cultivation have on the environment and development? The book starts with aspects of biomass accumulation, harvesting, transportation and storage, as well as conversion technologies for biofuels. This is followed by a look at the environmental impact and economic and social dimensions, including prospects for renewable energy. The book then goes on to cover all the main potential energy crops. For each main species it gives a brief description, outlines the ecological requirements, methods of propagation, crop management, rotation and production, harvesting, handling and storage, processing and utilization, then finishes with selected references. All those whose work involves biomass production, whether as agriculturalist, student, farmer, producer, planner or policy maker will find this book an invaluable reference work.
