This important book is the result of a study of school curriculum undertaken by a joint committee of the University of Toronto and the Board of Education for the City of Toronto. Three sub-committees, dealing with English, Social Science, and Physical Science, here present preliminary reports which indicate the need for perpetual study if the school curriculum is to be kept abreast of modern developments in each discipline. Committee members responsible for the reports are themselves elementary, secondary or university teachers of experience. Their recommendations, embracing all grades up to and including Thirteen, are specific, stimulating and controversial. They are unanimous only in their concern that necessary changes be made and that study of the curriculum be continuous and objective. The reports are prefaced by a discerning essay written by Northrop Frye, Principal Frye points out that "the real barriers to break down were those between the three major divisions of education, the primary, secondary and university levels, each of which tends to become a self-enclosed system, congratulating itself on its virtues and blaming whatever deficiencies the educational process as a whole may have on the other systems." This book will be of interest to teachers at all levels, to officials, responsible for policy in our public education, to trustees, to parents, and to the increasing number of general public who care about education. The Chairmen of the three committees were: English, Mary Campbell (Parkdale Collegiate Institute); Social Science, C.B. Macpherson (Department of Political Economy, University of Toronto); Physical Science, Charlotte M. Sullivan (Department of Zoology, University of Toronto). The Editor, Northrop Frye, is Principal of Victoria College, University of Toronto.
Authors have addressed physical literacy in books before-but these books have never comprehensively tied theory to practice. Author Heather Gardner has found a way to help K-12 physical and health education teachers bridge this gap in Physical Literacy on the Move. The result? Students not only learn the concepts of physical literacy but also learn to apply those concepts while having great fun and developing skills and self-confidence along the way. 120 Games for Physical Literacy Development This highly practical text applies physical literacy from a holistic point of view that goes beyond acquiring basic sport skills or fitness training. The book focuses on the key concepts of physical literacy as it offers the following: * 120 ready-to-use games and activities appropriate for a variety of accessible settings * Game and activity adaptations to increase or decrease the challenge * Personal reflection self-check questions for each activity to help students consider the movement skills, concepts, and strategies used, as well as relationship and social skills and critical thinking issues * A game finder that helps you find the right kind of game and level of challenge for your students Four Learning Levels With Adaptations for Each Game Gardner has broken the games and activities into four progressive levels of learning: beginning, exploring, competent, and proficient. In this way, students are not stuck in levels that are too easy or too hard for them-they have the opportunity to make decisions regarding their own groups, equipment, game set-up, and adaptations. The approach lets them find the optimal level of challenge, maximizing both participation and fun. The book contains eight chapters, each of which is broken into the four levels of learning. In addition to the ready-to-use games and activities, each chapter also has three special elements to aid in your instruction: * Words to Know offers terms and illustrations that are important to your physical literacy instruction and that pertain to specific fundamental movement skills. * Where's the Physical Literacy? highlights background information and other key learning that you might find appropriate for your students. * Educator Check and Reflect provides teaching and safety tips, strategies for creating an inclusive learning environment, and teaching reminders. Game Construction The games and activities are grouped into activity categories: low-organization games, personal fitness, gymnastics, creative movement, running and skipping, throwing and catching, striking with hands, and striking with an implement or feet. The game descriptions offer all the information needed to easily put them into play; each lists the activity goal, fundamental movement skill, tactical focus, level, facility, equipment, safety, activity instructions, adaptations, self-check questions, and more. You can search for games by chapter, skill, developmental level, or activity category. The Outcome: Physically Literate Students When people are physically literate, they can function confidently and competently in a variety of enviroonments and physical activities-activities that aid the development of the whole person. Physical Literacy on the Move is a tremendous resource to help your students develop their physical literacy. And as they are developing that literacy, you can be supporting their individual needs, thanks to the practical applications of the concepts and theories as delivered through the games and activities. The student-centered games in this book lay the foundation for students to explore and develop their physical literacy through enjoyable activities. And the learning and experiences will spur them to continue being physically active throughout their lives.

A recent surge in people's reconnecting with nature has resulted in numerous reference books for outdoor program leaders, but-until now-there has been a dearth of books aimed at wintertime pursuits. The Get-Outside Guide to Winter Activities unlocks the door to a wealth of fun and adventure in the snow. Activities have been compiled by keepers of the trail, experienced winter trekker leaders who know how to lead people in outdoor winter activities that are safe and fun and help people experience the joy of being active outdoors during the cold months of the year. This guide offers activities and games that have the following features: * Appropriate for multiple age groups * Easily modifiable to adapt to varying skillsets * Designed for a variety of locales, such as schoolyards, community trails, urban and remote parks, and wilderness settings The guide offers activities that are suitable for groups of varying skill levels and experience. Most activities are simple and quick and require little preparation and few props. Those interested in doing more can explore snowshoeing or Nordic skiing activities and even exploratory outings and winter day trips from a base camp to overnight or extended camping excursions. The book includes tactical snow games and activities and even has icebreakers for games. In addition, solo winter trekkers can use the activities and lessons as a launching point to prepare them in leading groups in winter outings. Leaders are shown how to build in activities that call on typical age-level skills of participants. The essential-skills progression built into the activities helps leaders offer instructional strategies that allow all participants to take part within their ability, and leaders are provided with ideas to modify all approaches and activities to ensure inclusion for all in their group. In addition to the game and activity modifications, the book offers winter facts that enhance participants' knowledge about the science of snow and winter as well as charts and graphs that focus on safety in winter. The Get-Outside Guide to Winter Activities offers a planning framework that balances winter fun with skills and safety and prepares leaders to guide others in enjoying activities in the snow. You will learn about activities that require little or no props, adaptive snow games, tips based on actual winter excursions, gear requirements, and leadership suggestions shared by winter experts: * How to stay warm and dry while winter camping * What and how to eat, drink, and cook in the winter * What gear you need for a snow expedition * What games and activities are great for campsites * How to teach basic snowshoeing and Nordic skiing skills * The keys to managing groups outside in winter You'll also learn how to make the most of winter opportunities through tried-and-true ideas, skill progressions and games, and activities that open up an entire season's worth of enjoyment, learning, and adventure. "People shy away from outdoor winter activities for three reasons," says Andrew Foran, one of the book's authors. "There's an overemphasis on the skkills that are thought to be required for participation. Granted, in some cases skills are essential, but it's how you approach the teaching and practicing of those skills that makes the difference. "Then there's a belief that the wintertime outdoors is to be feared rather than embraced. And finally, people are lacking a bank of ideas, of things to do, to keep them engaged and having fun outdoors in the winter." The Get-Outside Guide to Winter Activities addresses all three misconceptions-and in the process shows you, as a leader, how to help your participants have fun in the snow, build skills, and create lasting memories that will keep them looking forward to the next big snowfall.

The Adulteration of Children's Sports explores current behavioral and physiological research about how children's organized sport has changed; how adults' goals and needs are at the heart of those changes; and the consequences of those changes on children's enjoyment of sport and on their autonomy, creativity, and moral reasoning outside of sport. Adult introduction of early competition, extrinsic rewards, early sport specialization, and year-round participation has thwarted children's intrinsic motivation and contributed to children's attrition from sport. Kristi Erdal explores concerns about the future of sport itself, as adult-mediated selection practices whittle down young athletes earlier on shakier criteria. Parents' and coaches' complicity in these practices, however, is based on intermediaries poorly interpreting (or ignoring) the research literature. Thus, the final chapters of this book are about translating the research into applied ideas for change. Erdal provides an essential introduction to evidence-based research about children's health and well-being in sport and debunks myths along the way. Adults built the problems compiled in this text. We can dismantle them as well.
This book examines public policy in physical education and sport and provides insights into practices of school curriculum and after-school sport programs from a global context. With "More Teaching Games for Understanding: Moving Globally," you can learn and apply an innovative approach to teaching games that has been used around the world for 30 years in school and sport settings. Editors Joy Butler and Linda Griffin bring the teaching games for understanding (TGfU) approach to life for you in this practical book. "More Teaching Games for Understanding" follows Griffin and Butler's highly successful 2005 book, "Teaching Games for Understanding." This new book is based on the Fourth International TGfU Conference held in 2008 and includes all-new chapters written by 27 world-renowned contributors representing 6 countries. The preface and foreword are written by the founders of TGfU, Rod Thorpe, David Bunker, and Len Almond. This book is not a rehash or a revision of the 2005 book; it presents all-new material on TGfU. "More Teaching Games for Understanding" offers a comprehensive description of the TGfU model (sometimes referred to as the tactical games model or the games sense model). The text grounds you in the model's latest theory, research, and practice, and it helps you understand - various models of practice for sport and games education, - worldwide perspectives on the TGfU model, - how to facilitate flow motion in games and sports, and - how to modify games to enhance learning and achieve learning objectives. The authors use chapter-opening scenarios to draw readers in and introduce important concepts, and they provide chapter-ending summaries that help readers test their understanding of those concepts. They also offer discussion questions that function as starting points for discussion and review. This is the most complete, current, and authoritative book on the TGfU model that you can find. The breadth, depth, and quality of the chapters afford you an insider's look at this highly successful model, and its practical approach will help you readily put to use the knowledge gained from the highly regarded contributors. A small sample of what you'll learn includes how to involve students both in creating games and in assessing games to shape future performances, how to employ TGfU as a coaching methodology, how to use complexity thinking as a theory to frame the learning processes involved in TGfU, how to best use TGfU in elementary school physical education settings, and TGfU's role in developing physical literacy in children. "More Teaching Games for Understanding" supplies you with a teaching model that will empower kids, deepen their knowledge of game tactics and strategies, help them improve their skills, and bring greater joy to them as they play games.
