freedom we miss in pandemic times. From writer and author duo Alexa
Schels and Patrick Pichler, this large-format photo book takes

Schels and Pichler supplement stunning travel photography with
inspiring stories of personal encounters. Armchair travel when we
need it most - and a reminder of all there is to discover once the
world reopens for adventure. Text in English and German.

Ireland holds a special place in people's hearts - even for many
who haven't been there. To some the appeal is its natural beauty,
to others it's the history; to some it's the country's strong folk
tradition, to others it even seems to be a mystical place. Ireland
presents more than 200 outstanding photographs celebrating the
island's most evocative and beautiful places, whether in nature or
man-made, from the miles of near empty beaches to the Mourne
Mountains in County Down, from the pretty fishing towns of County
Cork to Dublin's elegant Georgian streets. Featuring images from
both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, the book ranges
widely across landscapes and history, from rugged cliffs and
rolling hills to mysterious stone circles, magnificent cathedrals
and ruined abbeys; and from medieval forts and castles to grand
Victorian follies and villages abandoned during the Potato Famine.
While some images such as the striking basalt columns of the
Giant's Causeway may be familiar, others you may know only from
Game of Thrones and the Star Wars films but never realized that
they, too, are in Ireland. Presented in a handy pocket-sized
landscape format and with captions explaining the story behind each
entry, Ireland is a stunning collection of images celebrating the
island's natural beauty, culture and history.
Experience the grandeur of the Texas Hill Country through stunning
photography and narrative highlighting the natural beauty, scenic
wonders, charming historic towns, and cultural heritage of Texas'
most celebrated region. Cradled by Austin to the east and San
Antonio to the south, the Texas Hill Country is famous for its
undulating landscape, where spring-fed streams carve wooded
canyons, rugged limestone peaks rise to more than 2,500 feet, and
country roads wind through rolling grasslands and wildflower
meadows. Captured beautifully in 153 color photos, view this
beautiful region through the eyes of Texas-native photographer and
author Eric W. Pohl. Join him on an intimate visual journey,
leaving behind the freeways and big cities to reveal out-of-the-way
places and explore the true heart of Texas.

Patagonia is the ultimate landscape of the mind. Like Siberia and
the Sahara, it has become a metaphor for nothingness and extremity.
Its frontiers have stretched beyond the political boundaries of
Argentina and Chile to encompass an evocative idea of place. A vast
triangle at the southern tip of the New World, this region of
barrensteppes, soaring peaks and fierce winds was populated by
small tribes of hunter-gatherers and roaming nomads when Ferdinand
Magellan made landfall in 1520. A fateful moment for the natives,
this was the start of an era of adventure and exploration. Soon Sir
Francis Drake and John Byron, and sailors from Europe and America,
would be exploring Patagonia's bays and inlets, mapping fjords and
channels, whaling, sifting the streams for gold in the endless
search for Eldorado. As the land was opened up in the nineteenth
century, a crazed Frenchman declared himself King.A group of Welsh
families sailed from Liverpool to Northern Patagonia to find a New
Jerusalem in the desert. Further down the same river, Butch and
Sundance took time out from bank robbing to run a small ranch near
the Patagonian Andes. All these, and later travel writers, have
left sketches and records, memoirs and diaries evoking Patagonia's
grip on the imagination. From the empty plains to the crashing
seas, from the giant dinosaur fossils to glacial sculptures, the
landscape has inspired generations of travellers and artists. This
place is a land of myth and legend: the "big foot" Indians and sea
monsters; the mad King of Araucania and Patagonia; penal colonies
and Nazi fugitives. It is land of explorers and settlers: Magellan
and Drake; the journey of the Beagle; Welsh migrants and gauchos;
Salesians and sheep farmers. It is the land of writers: W. H.
Hudson and Charles Darwin; Chatwin and Theroux; Baudrillard's
post-modern Patagonia.

'Lonely Planet. It's on everyone's bookshelves; it's in every

It's everywhere, and it's telling entire generations of people how
to travel the world.' - Fairfax Media (Australia)
It was love at first sight. We drove up the long track, pulled into
the yard, and wow! What a view. I did the drawings myself, the
maximum we were told (in those days) about what one could get away
with in terms of planning permission. A local architect did the
formal drawings and submitted them for planning permission. I did
not intend to do the work myself, it simply happened by
circumstance. I put the groundwork out to tender to six
contractors. Only one bothered to reply and the quotation was
astronomic. The steelwork looked very complicated, but I went to
the structural engineer's office in Gloucester to chat about it. I
asked: 'It looks complicated, but could I do this myself?' Peter
Rowntree was very reassuring. 'It looks complicated because you are
looking at it in its entirety. Let me show you this corner here.'
And he then explained how the steels fitted together and how one
wired them up. After a quarter of an hour, he summarised by saying
'Yes, you could do it.' And I did! Working only on Saturdays, and
even then, not every Saturday, it took me seven years to complete
it to a point where we could move into the extension. I was
extremely sad to leave Hydefield and putting this book together has
been cathartic. I was tremendously proud of what I managed to build
and have wanted to produce this photo book to bring back the
memories of every little achievement.

Do you remember Pathe News? Taking the train to the seaside? The
purple stains of iodine on the knees of boys in short trousers?
Knitted bathing costumes? Then chances are you were born in or
around 1950. To the young people of today, the 1950s seems like
another age. But for those born around then, this era of childhood
seems like yesterday. From waking up to ice on the inside of the
windows to bathing in a tin bath by the fire and spoonfuls of cod
liver oil, home life was very different to today. Capturing all
aspects of a 1950s childhood - home life, games and hobbies,
holidays, music and fashion, and more - bestselling author Paul
Feeney spins his memories and delightful illustrations into a
compendium that will jog priceless memories for all who grew up in
post-war Britain.
