A captivating journey along the iconic River Po and through Italian
history, society and culture. 'Delightful... A wonderful cornucopia
of history' TLS 'Uncovers the Po's fascinating history' Guardian
'Tobias Jones is the perfect guide' Spectator The Po is the longest
river in Italy, travelling for 652 kilometres from one end of the
country to the other. It rises by the French border in the Alps and
meanders the width of the entire peninsula to the Adriatic Sea in
the east. Flowing next to many of Italy's most exquisite cities -
Ferrara, Mantova, Parma, Cremona, Pavia and Torino - the river is a
part of the national psyche, as iconic to Italy as the Thames is to
England or the Mississippi to the USA. For millennia, the Po was a
vital trading route and a valuable source of tax revenue, fiercely
fought over by rival powers. It was also a moat protecting Italy
from invaders from the north, from Hannibal to Holy Roman Emperors.
It breached its banks so frequently that its floodplain swamps were
homes to outlaws and itinerants, to eccentrics and experimental
communities. But as humans radically altered the river's hydrology,
those floodplains became important places of major industries and
agricultures, the source of bricks, timber, silk, hemp, cement,
caviar, mint, flour and risotto rice. Tobias Jones travels the
length of the river against the current, gathering stories of
battles, writers, cuisines, entertainers, religious minorities and
music. Both an ecological lament and a celebration of the
resourcefulness and resilience of the people of the Po, the book
opens a window onto a stunning, but now neglected, part of Italy.
Massachusett's Harvard Square is one of the busiest and most
exciting spots in New England. The heart of it is Harvard
University with all its history, tradition, and ivy-covered, red
brick walls. \nOver 250 vintage postcards display the growth of
Harvard Square - from a sleepy village, where General George
Washington took command of the colonial troops, to a contemporary
city. Harvard Square, and the city of Cambridge by extension, still
retains many historic buildings and churches and its student
population with all its associated, diverse, cosmopolitan
attractions.
Take a virtual tour of Northern Arizona. More than 300 postcards
show the character and history of popular travel destinations like
the 270 million-year-old Grand Canyon, the Painted Desert, Oak
Creek Canyon, and the Petrified Forest. Experience the early Fred
Harvey Hotels, explore Arizona's Route 66 towns and roadside
attractions, and learn about the culture and history of Northern
Arizona's Native Americans. Postcard collectors will also find this
book a useful resource guide.

Paris, known affectionately throughout the world as the City of
Lights, is captured in precise detail in more than 40 extraordinary
drawings by Desmond Freeman. The city's much-loved ornate
buildings, majestic monuments, and grand boulevards from across its
20 arrondissements are the source of inspiration for this new
artistic endeavour by noted artist Desmond Freeman. Working with
ink he captures more than the intricate detail of Paris to reveal a
city that is again open to being discovered. Lavish full-colour and
black-and-white spreads show everyday Parisian life taking place in
among the city's famous landmarks. With sweeping views of the River
Seine, Notre Dame, the Paris Opera, the Eiffel Tower, Sacre-Coeur,
Montmartre's artist markets and the Trocadero, to the shopping
districts, which are a beacon to the style aficionados who travel
from across the world to glimpse the latest in style and fashion,
you will fall in love with Paris again. Freeman's first book,
Venice: Impressions in Ink ISBN 9780994558404 won the Gold Medal in
the Fine Art Books section at the 2017 Independent Publisher Book
Awards in New York from 5,000 entries from around the world. This
new book on Paris makes a perfect collector's item - it illuminates
this artist's methodology and renders the city in a unique format
with an original set of superb illustrations.

This is a comprehensive photographic journey through the rich and
vibrant history of Glasgow. It is fully-illustrated throughout with
almost 400 photographs. The POS is available, reviews in local
press and history magazines.Glasgow is a city that has seen great
change. Once the second city of the Empire, it was in 1999 chosen
as the UK City of Architecture and Design. Beneath the veil of
industrial grime, it would seem, was a place of incredible beauty.
In this stunning guide to the city, re-released in paperback due to
popular demand, authors Robert Jeffrey and Ian Johnson illustrate
the history of this transformation. This is a nostalgic look at
Glasgow as it used to be, the Dear Green Place that still sits so
fondly in the hearts of so many.

The migrant letter, whether written by family members, lovers,
friends, or others, is a document that continues to attract the
attention of scholars and general readers alike. What is it about
migrant letters that fascinates us? Is it nostalgia for a distant,
yet desired past? Is it the consequence of the eclipse of
letter-writing in an age of digital communication technologies? Or
is it about the parallels between transnational experiences in
previous mass migrations and in the current globalized world, and
the centrality of interpersonal relations, mobility, and
communication, then and now? Influenced by methodologies from
diverse disciplines, the study of migrant letters has developed in
myriad directions. Scholars have examined migrant letters through
such lenses as identity and self-making, family relations, gender,
and emotions. This volume contributes to this discussion by
exploring the connection between the practice of letter writing and
the emotional, economic, familial, and gendered experiences of men
and women separated by migration. It combines theoretical and
empirical discussions which illuminate a variety of historical
experiences of migrants who built transnational lives as they moved
across Europe, Africa, Latin America, and the United States. This
volume was originally published as a special issue of The History
of Family.
Sebastiao Salgado traveled the Brazilian Amazon and photographed
the unparalleled beauty of this extraordinary region for six years:
the forest, the rivers, the mountains, the people who live there-an
irreplaceable treasure of humanity. In the book's foreword Salgado
writes: "For me, it is the last frontier, a mysterious universe of
its own, where the immense power of nature can be felt as nowhere
else on earth. Here is a forest stretching to infinity that
contains one-tenth of all living plant and animal species, the
world's largest single natural laboratory." Salgado visited a dozen
indigenous tribes that exist in small communities scattered across
the largest tropical rainforest in the world. He documented the
daily life of the Yanomami, the Ashaninka, the Yawanawa, the
Suruwaha, the Zo'e, the Kuikuro, the Waura, the Kamayura, the
Korubo, the Marubo, the Awa, and the Macuxi-their warm family
bonds, their hunting and fishing, the manner in which they prepare
and share meals, their marvelous talent for painting their faces
and bodies, the significance of their shamans, and their dances and
rituals. Sebastiao Salgado has dedicated this book to the
indigenous peoples of Brazil's Amazon region: "My wish, with all my
heart, with all my energy, with all the passion I possess, is that
in 50 years' time this book will not resemble a record of a lost
world. Amazonia must live on." INSTITUTO TERRA Founded in 1998 at
Aimores in the state of Minas Gerais, Instituto Terra is the
culmination of Lelia Wanick Salgado and Sebastiao Salgado's
lifelong activism and work as cultural documentarians. Through a
scientific program of planting and raising saplings, the
organization has performed a miraculous reforestation of the once
infertile region and furthered the Salgados' mission of reversing
the damage done to our planet. TASCHEN is proud to reach carbon
zero status through our continued partnership. Also available in a
Collector's Edition and four Art Editions, each with a signed
silver gelatin print, all with a book stand designed by Renzo
Piano.
