Youth Unemployment and Job Precariousness - Political Participation in a Neo-Liberal Era (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016): David... Youth Unemployment and Job Precariousness - Political Participation in a Neo-Liberal Era (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2016)
David Cairns, Nuno de Almeida Alves, Ana Alexandre, Augusta Correia
R1,469 Discovery Miles 14 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book explores the relationship between youth labour market marginality and political participation, focusing on the example of Portugal and the role played by austerity policies in shaping patterns of activism. Through integrating primary and secondary empirical evidence with key ideas from classical and contemporary Sociology, the authors illustrate some of the key features of youth unemployment and job precariousness, also highlighting trends in formal and informal activist activities. Central to Youth Unemployment and Job Precariousness is the argument that following the onset of the economic crisis, there has been the birth of what we the authors term 'an austerity generation', comprised of young people facing difficulties in the labour market and uncertain futures. The book also highlights the difficulties young people have in making a political response to austerity, as well as their hopes for the future, including the need to raise consciousness about youth labour market marginalization and to return to more accountable forms of democracy.

The Origins of the Thirty Years War and the Revolt in Bohemia, 1618 (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015): Geoff Mortimer The Origins of the Thirty Years War and the Revolt in Bohemia, 1618 (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2015)

R4,043 Discovery Miles 40 430 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

As the 400th anniversary of the outbreak of the Thirty Years War approaches, Geoff Mortimer provides a timely re-assessment of its origins. Civil-Military Relations in Lebanon - Conflict, Cohesion and Confessionalism in a Divided Society (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017):... Civil-Military Relations in Lebanon - Conflict, Cohesion and Confessionalism in a Divided Society (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Are John Knudsen, Tine Gade
R3,919 Discovery Miles 39 190 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume examines Lebanon's post-2011 security dilemmas and the tenuous civil-military relations. The Syrian civil war has strained the Lebanese Armed Forces' (LAF) cohesion and threatens its neutrality - its most valued assets in a divided society. The spill-over from the Syrian civil war and Hezbollah's military engagement has magnified the security challenges facing the Army, making it a target. Massive foreign grants have sought to strengthen its military capability, stabilize the country and contain the Syria crisis. However, as this volume demonstrates, the real weakness of the LAF is not its lack of sophisticated armoury, but the fragile civil-military relations that compromise its fighting power, cripple its neutrality and expose it to accusations of partisanship and political bias. This testifies to both the importance of and the challenges facing multi-confessional armies in deeply divided countries.

Forms of the Left in Postcolonial South Asia - Aesthetics, Networks and Connected Histories (Hardcover): Sanjukta Sunderason,... Forms of the Left in Postcolonial South Asia - Aesthetics, Networks and Connected Histories (Hardcover)
Sanjukta Sunderason, Lotte Hoek
R3,063 Discovery Miles 30 630 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book explores the aesthetic forms of the political left across the borders of post-colonial, post-partition South Asia. Spanning India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh, the contributors study art, film, literature, poetry and cultural discourse to illuminate the ways in which political commitment has been given aesthetic form and artistic value by artists and by cultural and political activists in postcolonial South Asia. With a focused conceptualization this volume asks: Does the political left in South Asia have a recognizable aesthetic form? And if so, what political effects do left-wing artistic movements and aesthetic artefacts have in shaping movements against inequality and injustice? Reframing political aesthetics within a postcolonial and decolonised framework, the contributors detail the trajectories and transformations of left-wing cultural formations and affiliations and focus on connections and continuities across post-1947/8 India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Management of International Institutions and NGOs - Frameworks, practices and challenges (Hardcover): Eduardo Missoni, Daniele... Management of International Institutions and NGOs - Frameworks, practices and challenges (Hardcover)
Eduardo Missoni, Daniele Alesani
R4,880 Discovery Miles 48 800 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

International Institutions (IIs), International NGOs (INGOs) and Transnational Hybrid Organizations (THOs) play a hugely important role in the modern world economy. Despite having been studied by scholars from a range of disciplines, these organizations have never before been approached from a management perspective. This ambitious book analyzes the management challenges associated with international cooperation and sheds light on how these organizations have evolved as the political, economic and business environments have changed around them. Covering an admirably broad canvas, the authors pursue two main objectives. Firstly, they explore the main management frameworks developed in the context of the corporate and national public/non-profit organizations and adapt them to the specificity of IIs and INGOs. This leads to the identification of a "tailored" approach to IO management based on their institutional and operational settings, stakeholder groups, core business, staff profile, and financial arrangements. Secondly, they "bring theory into practice" by linking frameworks to several case studies and best practices of organizations currently experimenting with management systems and tools, with case studies including the World Bank and the Gates Foundation. This comprehensive textbook is a must-own resource for students and academics involved with studying and working with international organizations.

The Rise of the Radical Right in the Global South (Paperback): Rosana Pinheiro-Machado, Tatiana Vargas-Maia The Rise of the Radical Right in the Global South (Paperback)
Rosana Pinheiro-Machado, Tatiana Vargas-Maia
R1,165 Discovery Miles 11 650 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

The Rise of the Radical Right in the Global South is the first academic study—adopting an interdisciplinary and international perspective—to offer a comprehensive and groundbreaking framework for understanding the emergence and consolidation of different radical-right movements in Global South countries in the twenty-first century. From deforestation and the anti-vaccine movement in Bolsonaro’s Brazil to the massacre of religious minorities in Modi’s India, the rise of the radical right in the Global South is in the news every day. Not long ago, some of these countries were globally celebrated as emerging economies that consolidated vibrant democracies. Nonetheless, they never overcame structural problems including economic inequality, social violence, cultural conservatism, and political authoritarianism. Featuring case studies from Brazil, India, the Philippines, and South Africa, and more generally from Africa and Latin America, this book analyses future scenarios and current alternatives to this political movement to the radical right. It proposes a shift of focus in examining such a trend, adopting a view from the Global South; conventional theoretical tools developed around the experience in Global North countries are not enough. The authors show that the radical right in the Global South should be analysed through specific lenses, considering national historical patterns of political and economic development and instability. They also warn that researching these countries may differ from contexts where democratic institutions are more reliable. This does not mean abandoning a transnational understanding of the radical right; rather, it calls for the opposite: the chapters examine how the radical right is invented, adapted, modified, and resisted in specific regions of the globe. This volume will be of interest to all those researching the radical right and the politics of development and the Global South.

Religion and Terrorism - The Use of Violence in Abrahamic Monotheism (Hardcover): Veronica Ward, Richard Sherlock Religion and Terrorism - The Use of Violence in Abrahamic Monotheism (Hardcover)
Veronica Ward, Richard Sherlock; Contributions by Gideon Aran, Donna Lee Bowen, Daniel Brown, …
R2,456 Discovery Miles 24 560 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Religion and Terrorism: The Use of Violence in Abrahamic Monotheism provides theoretical analysis of the nature of religious terrorism and religious martyrdom and also delves deeply into terrorist groups and beliefs in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Religious terrorism is found in all three of the great monotheistic faiths, and while the public is most aware of Islamic terrorism, Jewish and Christian faiths have extremist groups that warp their teaching -in ways unrecognizable to most adherents- to support terrorism. This work will be of interest to scholars in religious studies, political science, and sociology.

Drawing upon Marxian value theory, Charnock, Purcell, and Ribera-Fumaz explain the deep historical and structural roots of the crisis in Spain, contextualised within global political and economic transformations in recent decades. Birmingham and the Long Black Freedom Struggle (Hardcover): Robert W. Widell, Jr. Birmingham and the Long Black Freedom Struggle (Hardcover)
Robert W. Widell, Jr.
R1,476 Discovery Miles 14 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In 1963, Birmingham, Alabama, was the site of one of the Civil Rights Movement's most celebrated victories and one of its most well-known tragedies. As a result, the city looms large in the history of the twentieth-century black freedom struggle. As the nation marks the fiftieth anniversary of those events, though, the Birmingham story remains incomplete. Although many historians have studied Birmingham's role in the Civil Rights Movement, the existing literature still does not extend its focus into the years after 1963. Picking up the story in the mid-1960s, author Robert W. Widell Jr. explores the evolution of black activism as the city (and the country) moved into the 1970s. In so doing, it provides the historical detail that is essential in the effort to understand the 'long' black freedom struggle.

The British Approach to Counterinsurgency - From Malaya and Northern Ireland to Iraq and Afghanistan (Hardcover): P. Dixon The British Approach to Counterinsurgency - From Malaya and Northern Ireland to Iraq and Afghanistan (Hardcover)
P. Dixon
R3,318 Discovery Miles 33 180 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The British 'hearts and minds' approach to counterinsurgency was credited with rare successes against insurgencies in Malaya (1948-60), Northern Ireland (1969-2007) and its widely admired approach to peacekeeping in the nineties. More recently, the British influenced the development of US counterinsurgency thinking on Iraq just as the British Army was perceived to be failing in Southern Iraq. Despite their attempt, the British military failed to restore their reputation by involvement in the 'good war' in Afghanistan. This timely and critical volume questions the effectiveness of Britain's 'hearts and minds' approach and challenges conventional counterinsurgency thinking by drawing on the expertise of regional and thematic specialists.

Terrorism in the Cold War - State Support in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Sphere of Influence (Hardcover): Adrian Hanni,... Terrorism in the Cold War - State Support in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Sphere of Influence (Hardcover)
Adrian Hanni, Thomas Riegler, Przemyslaw Gasztold
R3,382 Discovery Miles 33 820 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Accounts of the relationships between states and terrorist organizations in the Cold War era have long been shaped by speculation, a lack of primary sources and even conspiracy theories. In the last few years, however, things have evolved rapidly. Using a wide range of case studies including the KGB's Abduction Program, Polish Military Intelligence and North Korea's 'Terrorism and Counterterrorism', this book sheds new light on the relations between state and terrorist actors, allowing for a fresh and much more insightful assessment of the contacts, dealings, agreements and collusion with terrorist organizations undertaken by state actors on both sides of the Iron Curtain. This book presents the current state of research and provides an assessment of the nature, motives, effects, and major historical shifts of the relations between individual states and terrorist organizations. The articles collected demonstrate that these state-terrorism relationships were not only much more ambiguous than much of the older literature had suggested but are, in fact, crucial for the understanding of global political history in the Cold War era.

Politics to the Extreme - American Political Institutions in the Twenty-First Century (Hardcover, New): S. Frisch, S Kelly Politics to the Extreme - American Political Institutions in the Twenty-First Century (Hardcover, New)
S. Frisch, S Kelly
R1,929 Discovery Miles 19 290 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Contemporary American politics have produced levels of ideological conflict not seen since the Civil War. Congressional voting records especially illustrate the increasing ideological polarization between Democrats and Republicans in the Senate. In the 95th Senate, conservative Democrats and liberal Republicans overlapped in the center of the political spectrum. A decade later, the degree of ideological overlap had plummeted, and by the 109th Congress it had all but disappeared. The result is the near-complete gridlock the country has experienced over the last decade, resonating from the fiscal cliff to the debt ceiling. Politics to the Extreme brings together leading scholars and experts to examine how ideological warfare infects and affects American political institutions, hindering the ability on our institutions to respond to pressing policy challenges. This incisive and approachable analysis also identifies solutions for bridging the partisan divide and restoring courtesy to Congress.

EPZ Terrorism - The New World Disorder (Hardcover): Nicholas Fotion, Boris Kashnikov, Joanne K. Lekea EPZ Terrorism - The New World Disorder (Hardcover)

R4,352 Discovery Miles 43 520 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Terrorism poses an undeniable threat to societies throughout the world today. Martyr terrorism, the fastest growing form of terrorist activity, and arguably the most effective, has become a regular occurrence. But how has terrorist activity evolved in the last 100 years, and what are the ethical costs of terrorism? In this informative book, three philosophers, all experts on the ethics of conflict, examine the various definitions of terrorism and the nature of martyr terrorism. Through accounts of terrorist campaigns, from 19th century Russian terrorism, to the 20th century campaigns in Ireland , Israel and Greece , and contemporary campaigns in Chechnya , Afghanistan and Iraq , this fascinating book explores the ethical implications of terrorism from a philosophical perspective. Setting out the social, psychological and political causes of terrorism, the book interrogates the cases for and against terrorist activity in terms of just war theory. Articulate, provocative and stimulating, this timely book is an ideal introduction to an important contemporary social issue.

Renee Guarriello Heath, Courtney Vail Fletcher, Ricardo Munoz; Foreword by David Osborn; Contributions by William Barnes, …
R2,719 Discovery Miles 27 190 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Given the centrality of economics and communication in the Occupy movement, Understanding Occupy from Wall Street to Portland uses economic insights and contemporary theories of communication to better understand the movement at this current juncture in history. This collection is organized by complementary theoretical and methodological perspectives: the global critical cultural and economic understandings of Occupy; the local interpretive ethnographic examinations of a local site Occupy Portland, Oregon; and mediated perspectives analyses of the words of officials and media. The contributors also examine social movement phenomena by stepping outside of social movement theory to analyze the macro- and microprocesses of the Occupy movement, demonstrating the saliency of communication theory. Throughout the volume are in-depth case studies that examine universal narratives about Occupy. One of the challenges of studying Occupy is that members of this movement are committed to not allowing any one person (or entity) to define it. One way the editors acknowledge this and attempt to honor the individualism and postmodern fragmentation of this movement is to consider their findings in light of the three interpretive lenses of the romantic, functional, and critical. This informative and comprehensive text provides a critical lens on the constantly evolving Occupy movement.

Insurgency and Counter-Insurgency in Turkey - The New PKK (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Spyridon Plakoudas Insurgency and Counter-Insurgency in Turkey - The New PKK (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Spyridon Plakoudas
R1,469 Discovery Miles 14 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book seeks to answer the "why" and "how" questions about the insurgency of the PKK, a militant left-wing group of Turkey's Kurds, in Turkey. The PKK has been inter-locked in an intermittent war against Turkey since 1984 in the name of Kurdish nationalism. The author combines insights of Strategy and IR - from strategy and tactics in irregular warfare to peace negotiations between state authorities and insurgents, with data from qualitative research, to achieve two inter-related objectives: first, assess the current state of affairs and predict the future course of the conflict and, secondly, draw general conclusions on how protracted conflicts can end and how.

In the 1940s, Dora Tamana ran a day-care centre for children in a shack in Cape Town. She had no money for pencils and paper, but by writing words in the sand with a stick, she taught the children to read and write. This was only a small part of Dora's work. To improve the living conditions of her people, she organised demonstrations, planned campaigns against racism and distributed political newspapers. She was also a leading member of the SACP, ANC and a founder member of the Federation of South African Women. Dora was banned and jailed for her political work, but her beliefs have taken hold in South Africa's new democracy. Dora Tamana died in 1983. They Fought for Freedom tells the life stories of southern African leaders who struggled for freedom and justice. In spite of the important roles they played in the history of southern Africa, most of these leaders have been largely ignored by the history books. The series tells their stories in an entertaining manner, in clear language and aims to restore them to their rightful place in history.

The Exiled Pandits of Kashmir - Will They Ever Return Home? (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Bill K. Koul The Exiled Pandits of Kashmir - Will They Ever Return Home? (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Bill K. Koul
R1,484 Discovery Miles 14 840 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book discusses all the questions related to Kashmiri Pandits and their relation and current issues regarding their return to Kashmir. The book explores the importance of return of Kashmiri Pandits for Kashmir and both major Kashmiri communities, especially those who really want to return home, out of their own volition and for all right reasons. The book shows how to bring about a reasonable and realistic degree of practical and sustainable reconciliation between the two communities, whilst trying to make them stand in each other's shoes, understand each other's perspective and pain and then self-introspect sincerely, so that a bridge of mutual trust and acceptance is rebuilt between the two communities, which can then allow those Pandits who genuinely want to return cross over and be home.
