This convertible pirate ship is the ideal storybook, playmat and
sit-in toy for toddlers. Once unfolded, parent and child can read
the simple story. Laid on the ground, it can be used as a playmat
upon which children can use their own toys, or they can simply
follow the illustrated route as they read.
TV star, former SAS soldier, Guinness World Record holder, author
and the first ever Chief Ambassador to World Scouting, Bear Grylls
is an inspiration for youngsters who want to make the most of
life's adventures. In his recent bestseller Soul Fuel Bear revealed
for the first time the inspiration that helps him to stand strong
and find peace each day. Now Soul Fuel for Young Explorers takes
his message and inspires children and young people to find courage
and confidence in this source too. Bear offers seventy reflections
along with stories from his own life -- brilliantly illustrated by
Patrick Laurent -- making it a vibrant and engaging devotional for
young readers. 'Faith doesn't mean you have to be especially
"religious". But, in a nutshell, my faith tells me that I am known,
that I am secure and that I am loved - regardless of the storms I
may find myself in from time to time, regardless of how often I
fall and fail.'- Bear Grylls
Where does our food come from? What role do farms play? What's it
like to be a farmer? In this charmingly illustrated book, follow a
farm throughout the year to discover how the farmer grows fresh and
tasty food for us to eat in a sustainable and natural way. Explore
the workings of a small-scale, organic family farm and experience
the rhythm of farm life. In the spring, visit the chicken coop,
till the fields, and tour the farm machinery. When summer comes,
plant corn, meet the pollinators, and head to the county fair. In
the fall, make pies and preserves, harvest pumpkins, and put the
fields to sleep. Winter activities include trimming and pruning the
orchard, seed shopping, and baking bread. To conclude your year on
the farm, learn what you can do to support the farmers who pick our
carrots and raise the cows for our milk. A glossary defines key
sustainable farming terms. Through this colorful and intimate look
at life on a small-scale farm, children will learn not only how the
farm feeds us, but how the farmer must feed and care for the farm.
THERE IS NO better way to introduce children to classical music
than with Prokofiev's musical fairy tale of the little boy (played
by all the strings of the orchestra) who, with the help of a bird
(played by the flute), outsmarted the big, bad wolf (played by the
French horns). And now with this book and CD package, children can
look and listen all at the same time. A new retelling by Janet
Schulman follows the basic story, but with a kinder ending for both
the big bad wolf and the argumentative duck. Peter Malone's
paintings have the luminous quality of old Russian masters. The CD,
with music performed by the Cincinnati Pops and word-for-word
narration by Peter A. Thomas, was made exclusively for this book
and CD package.

Category Description for Kumon Math Workbooks (1-6):
A math program based on the Kumon method. Basically, the earmarks of
this system are:
- Concepts introduced in small, incremental steps, allowing
children to master them without confusion
- Single topic books rather than mixed strands. Children
concentrate just on addition, for example, before moving to subtraction
- Concepts are taught by discovery method than being spelled
out
The series is meant to be self-directed. Students take charge of their
own learning on every level. They complete pages, check their work,
record their scores, and determine whether to move on or review. The
pace almost guarantees success. Children should work a "few" pages a
day; assignments should take about 20 minutes to complete. Pages are
marked with the skill level required at top and the points each
question is valued at (a very young child will need some help totaling
points). Very short instruction (or an example) is given on a few
pages. For example, there is a short explanation when children begin to
subtract a 2-digit number from a 3-digit number where borrowing is
needed. However, the child is given every opportunity to intuit this
beforehand. By the time he reaches this page, he has already been
subtracting double-digit numbers for many pages. Some of these would
require borrowing, but, since they are able to subtract, say, 7 from
12, the Kumon method wants the child to see a pattern when increasing
to 7 from 22, 7 from 32, etc. This does remind me of the approach used
in Miquon as well. Besides these very infrequent helps there are just
some small prompts for children to look for patterns in their answers,
and words of encouragement. Pages are pleasing to the eye; they are
colored, clean, and problems are well-spaced. The Kumon method has been
used successfully with children around the world for over 50 years. It
does seem like it would help a child to take charge of his own learning
and help himself to understanding rather than being spoon-fed each
bite. For Kumon math earlier than Grade 1, see the Kumon section in
Early Learning.

Happy Baby is a wonderful new gift book for babies by Priddy Books.
This shaped board book is a wonderful gift for any baby shower or
to give to a newborn baby. It has been designed with our very first
learners in mind, as each page has a ribbon attached with a
different pattern or tactile feel which babies can explore as they
interact with the book. There are also three shaped animal tabs
which will also engage young children as they turn the pages. This
book is focussed on different types of play, from toys to playing
outside and doing arts and crafts together. The soft retro
illustrations include sweet vignettes of babies and labelled images
of what is in the scene to encourage early speaking skills,
word-picture recognition as well as introducing babies to the world
around them. There is also gentle rhyming text written from a
child’s perspective which is perfect for reading aloud to young
children: I can shake my rattle, bang my drum, and stack up blocks
one by one! There is so much for babies and parents to explore
together as they enjoy this adorable baby book.
This book is full of practice questions on vocab and grammar for
KS3 French. The questions cover the key topics you'll need in a
straightforward way - ideal for discovering any gaps in your
knowledge - and all the answers are included in the back of the
book. Matching study notes and explanations are also available in
the CGP Revision Guide (9781841468303).

Buddy is a moving and totally convincing account of a boy's
faltering relationship with his father, with an atmospheric 1980s
setting. It is one of The Originals from Penguin - iconic,
outspoken, first. Buddy has a hopeless father who is an ageing
rocker, interested only in Elvis and bikes, and living on the
fringes of the under-world. The two manage to strike up some kind
of relationship when Buddy's mum walks out - until Buddy realises
that his dad is involved in something more serious than he
suspected. The Originals are the pioneers of fiction for young
adults. From political awakening, war and unrequited love to
addiction, teenage pregnancy and nuclear holocaust, The Originals
confront big issues and articulate difficult truths. The collection
includes: The Outsiders - S.E. Hinton, I Capture the Castle - Dodie
Smith, Postcards from No Man's Land - Aidan Chambers, After the
First Death - Robert Cormier, Dear Nobody - Berlie Doherty, The
Endless Steppe - Esther Hautzig, Buddy - Nigel Hinton, Across the
Barricades - Joan Lingard, The Twelfth Day of July - Joan Lingard,
No Turning Back - Beverley Naidoo, Z for Zachariah - Richard C.
O'Brien, The Wave - Morton Rhue, The Red Pony - John Steinbeck, The
Pearl - John Steinbeck, Stone Cold - Robert Swindells.
