This is Tom's second book and illustrates his bizarre, humorous and
emotional ten-year journey in the world of club volleyball. Tom's
three daughters participated in this roller-coaster environment for
several different club teams. When Tom says, "Lunatic Rantings of a
Volleyball Dad," he is not kidding. He loses his composure many
times in the book and relates stories that are not normally
discussed in polite conversation. He humorously takes on everyone
who is associated with club volleyball: The players The coaches The
volleyball officials The volleyball club rules Volleyball
traditions The parents His wife Himself This book is for everyone.
The young athletes will enjoy the book as much as the adults. The
craziness found in club volleyball is probably relatable to all
club sport teams. Enjoy! Tom's favorite volleyball cheer is,
"Mirror, mirror on the wall, pretty girls don't play volleyball so
let's get ugly." I think Tom has taken "ugliness" to a whole new
level.
There are few books on the market today about playing the sport of
volleyball. Few of these books speak to the outdoor doubles game.
Even those that do exist simply go over the basic fundamentals.
Most of the literature on this topic the average player already
knows. "Winning Doubles: Mastering the Game Through Strategy and
Training," is meant to bring players of all levels immediate
improvements in their game. Using a series of strategies discussed
nowhere else in any book currently on the market, Sangiacomo covers
all aspects vital to a player's success on the doubles court.
Topics include: Finding the right partner Types of serves and
serving strategy Adjusting to weather conditions Passing
positioning and tips (beyond fundamentals) Setting Techniques
Hitting different types of shots Defensive schemes and blocking
Physical conditioning and strength training for optimum performance
Mental conditioning and exercises to enhance your play Reference
section and description of useful products Much, much more This
book is a must read for any competitive player who aims to be in
the winner's circle

The Harper College women's volleyball team had a terrific record
last year. In general, the same players were on the team this year
as the year before. However, the prior year, with a different
coaching staff and philosophies, the team record was only 3 wins
and 18 losses. This year, the team ended up rated the 4th best team
in the nation.
In volleyball, as with any sport, there are certain philosophies
that work better than others. Sometimes, better talent with poorer
philosophies can overcome worse talent with a good system. But this
was a situation where we generally followed the philosophies and
marched toward the success at the end of the tunnel.
This book is about those philosophies, and illustrates the
points by showing where Harper College's players performed against
those philosophies.
Players and coaches alike will become a better volleyball player
or coach by reading this book.
