Fay Weldon is very much a novelist who writes for and about women,
and this collection of short stories is no exception. A grown-up
daughter plots against her father's new girlfriend, who is also her
own best friend. A new girlfriend struggles to exorcise the
presence of her partner's ex-wife. A mother worries about whether
she will ever given grandchildren, whilst Boadicea contemplates the
future of her people on the eve of her last great battle against
Rome. There are 20 stories packed into this 220-page book and none
of them are particularly long or involved, making for great reading
on the bus or train. However, the brevity of some of the stories
means that they are not completely satisfying. Motives are
revealed, minds are changed and loose ends are tied sometimes far
too quickly. Fay Weldon's signature characters are strong, feisty
women, but their regular reappearance in each story risks
repetition. Whilst the physical attributes and personal
circumstances of her heroines vary, the essential character of each
is the same and this can get a little boring. But there is no
denying Weldon's brilliant creativity, which is illustrated in
these stories by the environments of her characters. The world of
each is described intimately and, where required, with great
knowledge. Settings range from archaeological sites to
millionaires' yachts and first-century war encampments, and she is
also adept at emotional responses, approaching loneliness, avarice
and generosity with style and sympathy. This collection is a mixed
success, but everyone will find something to appreciate and
Weldon's fans are bound to enjoy it. (Kirkus UK)
Abandoned wives remain as lingering presences in the homes of their ex-husband's new girlfriends; beautiful young models find their misdemeanours exposed for all the world to see in the tabloids; middle-aged women get swept off their feet and into the criminal underworld by charismatic con-men; young trophy wives get thrown in jail after over-exuberant cavorting on their private yachts; mothers beg their thirty-something career-minded daughters to freeze their eggs in the hope that they may one day bear their grandchildren.
Bold, glamorous, sexy, unrepentant, Fay Weldon's heroines offer a quite unique view of the world as they face their trials without fear or trepidation. Both her legions of existing fans and new readers will be enthralled.
