Proceeding from a discussion of the existing research on verb moods
in Spanish, the study advances a theoretical view of their status
in the hierarchy of modal forms of expression, their function as an
expression of speaker attitudes and also discusses aspects of
speech-act theory implicated in the way they are used. There
follows a detailed analysis of the "Corpus del Diccionario del
EspaAol de MA(c)xico." The results of this analysis highlight
present-day tendencies in the use and the functional-communicative
ambit of the verb moods of Mexican Spanish. A comparative study of
the use of verb moods in German enriches the study by extending its
purview to an entirely different language.
