At the height of the war in 1917, Laurence Binyon spent a month
touring Red Cross hospitals and field canteens on the Western
Front, talking to the men and women who were serving as volunteer
nurses, doctors, ambulance drivers, canteen workers and medical
orderlies. This is his account of that extraordinary journey and
their remarkable heroism.
