Dans ce livre, qui s'inspire en partie du travail de Hayden White, je discuterai la relation entre le discours narratif et la representation historique et litteraire selon l'approche critique de quatre ecrivains contemporains d'expression francaise, Abdelkebir Khatibi (Maroc), Edouard Glissant (Martinique), Yves Valentin Mudimbe (Republique Democratique du Congo) et Assia Djebar (Algerie). Une lecture attentive de leurs oeuvres romanesques et theoriques me suggere que le discours narratif n'est pas une forme neutre dont la fonction est la representation du monde exterieur, mais plutot une activite qui se developpe selon des choix d'ordre ontologique et epistemologique qui ont des implications ideologiques. Je maintiendrai que l'ecriture de ces auteurs souleve des questions concernant la legitimite du discours colonial et son incapacite a signifier la subjectivite du subalterne. Ces questions s'inscrivent dans le cadre d'une tentative de redefinir l'histoire et la culture de leurs societes d'origine. Cette redefinition consiste a briser les barrieres separant la fiction et l'histoire en faisant recours a une ecriture metafictionnelle ou on a une cohabitation des genres.
