Some things seem to go on so long that we take them for granted.
Egypt's Mubarak regime has that timeless quality, but in truth it
nears the end. Presidential elections are scheduled for 2011, if
not sooner, and the aged Mubarak will likely step aside. His son
Gamal waits in the wings, seemingly alone. But the regime comes
under many pressures, both foreign and domestic, to bring
democratic reforms and free and fair elections to Egypt. A
hereditary succession would be highly suspect, and in all
probability destabilizing and illegitimate. Furthermore, as a key
Middle East power and crucial US ally, Egypt's transfer of power
has profound implications for the region and must be managed with
the utmost care. Meanwhile, the threat of an Islamist regime lurks
in the background, as the Muslim Brotherhood has achieved a
grudging parity with the weakening Mubarak regime since 2005. The
push for democratic reform is thus tempered by the perceived need
for stability. Meanwhile, the Egyptian people long for democracy,
and the thought of a Gamal Mubarak regime stretching across two
more decades is crushing to contemplate.

Cancer gene therapy is a novel therapy that targets the underlying
genetic defects in the cancer cell. Progress in this field has been
rapid and gene therapy promises to further extend personalized
cancer treatment. In this volume leading experts have contributed
their experience in developing gene therapies for a variety of
cancers. Translational gene therapy approaches are emphasized.
Chapters include discussions of specific gene delivery technologies
as well as their application to various cancers with extensive
discussions of ongoing clinical trials. This information should be
useful to both students, fellows, and experienced scientists with
an interest in this rapidly developing area.
Have you ever been praised or criticized about your body or any
part of it? With this question, participants of a research study
were invited to share their experiences of body judgment. As
participants described, the body is a carrier of messages and the
source of judgmental experiences. Psychoanalytic Perspectives on
Gaze, Body Image, Shame, Judgment and Maternal Function: Being and
Belonging offers an insightful and engaging psychoanalytical
account of experiences of shame and fear of rejection, explained
through clinical vignettes and research participants' scripts.
Exploring the findings from the individual and social standpoints,
as well as the cultural and historical influences, Dr. Roth
proposes that judgements are experienced as attacks, with the
meaning attributed to the criticized body part, affecting the sense
of self and forming a central point of the participants' identity
trauma. Furthermore, that as guilt requires reparative action,
shame requires an act of sacrifice to align the individual to the
ideal and to preserve the matrix of belonging, thus explaining the
participants' use of alienation as a defense. This book will be of
great interest to psychoanalysts and psychotherapists, as well as
scholars of culture and religion. Giving a brief introduction to
psychoanalytic concepts, with a full glossary, it will also appeal
to the non-psychoanalytic reader, interested in body image and how
related perceptions and judgements can affect our own sense of
Being and Belonging.

"Burnout" and "stress" are words instantly recongnizable to those
individuals in the caring professions - not least teachers. The
education system in its process of reform has been slow to respond
to the problem of growing disillusionment in teachers; failing to
acknowledge the lack of support and recognition for the
contribution teachers make to society. Based on analysis of the
psychological needs of teachers, stress and burnout, this book aims
to provide insights into the nature ofstress and burnout. It gives
practical advice and outlines a programme for dealing with these
issues. Specific attention is paid to how teachers perceive the
negative factors associated with stress and burnout, why teachers
experience such problems and what they can do to alleviate the
situation. This book should help teachers to deal more ably with
the stresses of teaching and their resultant self-perception. It
aims to empower the teacher and return him/her to a position of
confidence from which the creative and intelligent output can once
more emerge.
The aim of eye muscle surgery is to restore alignment of the visual
axes and ocular stability. Albeit compensatory and largely
empirical, this surgery can be perfected with a better
understanding of the physiopathological mechanisms involved, more
detailed semiological analysis, the taking into account of
intraoperative data and the use of microsurgical technique. The
three parts of this book allow each of these factors to be
discussed at length.

Using the engaging case of British security policy between the
world wars, this book argues that an effective balance of power,
which is the key to a stable international system, is a deliberate
act of policy and that leaders play a determinative role in
building an effective balance.
The Age of Democratic Revolution, which spanned the period between the end of the Seven Years' War in 1763 and the middle of the nineteenth century, witnessed a profound transformation in the role of governments and the ways in which religious institutions shaped the morals and spiritual beliefs of the societies that surrounded them. Nowhere was that transformation more dramatic than in Vermont, where the pioneers who settled New England's northern frontier launched the most radical democratic revolution of the era. There a society arose that was formally committed to the ideals of democracy, equality, and religious freedom, and rejected slavery, monarchy, established churches, and imperial domination.
This book is about the p53 gene, one of the most frequently mutated
or deleted genes in human cancers. The frequent occurrence of
inactivated p53 implicates this gene product in the genesis of many
human cancers. The p53 gene can suppress the growth of cancer cells
and the transformation process by oncogenes. The p53 protein is a
transcription factor that can repress or activate promoters
containing one of three p53 DNA-binding motifs. The activity of p53
is regulated by phosphorylation and other transcription factors.
Replacement of the p53 function or restoration of the p53
biochemical pathway is a focus of gene therapy.

Not everyone complies with the United States Internal Revenue Code.
Many individuals and organizations fail to file timely tax returns,
assess their tax liability correctly, or pay taxes when due. To
improve compliance, tax administrators must choose among
alternative strategies, such as increasing evaders' risks of
punishment, motivating social norms, and making compliance easier.
Concerned with these choices, the IRS asked the National Academy to
assess previous research on the determinants of taxpayer compliance
and to highlight the most promising areas for future research. The
Academy's panel authored the two-volume Taxpayer Compliance. Volume
2 is a collection of eight background papers commissioned by the
panel. They present novel theories and research ideas proposed by
scholars from many social sciences to improve the understanding of
taxpayer compliance. The varied topics addressed include: the
political and institutional context of the American tax system; a
typology of noncompliance; a study of the way the visibility of
noncompliance affects patterns of taxpaying in the house-painting
profession; and theories of ways tax practitioners may affect their
clients' compliance. These papers not only illustrate for a general
audience what various disciplines can add to knowledge but also
suggest for specialized researchers the opportunities that taxpayer
compliance offers for extending and testing the theories of their
disciplines. Taxpayer Compliance will be a valuable reference for
tax practitioners and others concerned with noncompliance problems,
and for scholars and students of law and sociology, political
science, social psychology, and economics.

This book examines the relationship between Chinese Canadian
ethnicity and the use of complementary and alternative medicine
(CAM) and explores some of the factors that contribute to CAM use
among this visible minority group. Using data from the 2003
Canadian Community Health Survey, multivariate logistic regression
techniques are used herein to investigate the extent to which CAM
use varies among Chinese Canadians and non-Chinese Canadians. Two
three-way interactions, which demonstrate how the combination of
certain identity markers increases their predictive value within
the model, are also examined. The results indicate that use of
complementary and alternative medicine varies according to
ethnicity, with Chinese Canadians being more likely to use than
non-Chinese Canadians.

Every day, individuals take action based on how they believe
innovation will change industries. Yet these beliefs are largely
based on guesswork and incomplete data and lead to costly errors in
judgment. Now, internationally renowned innovation expert Clayton
M. Christensen and his research partners Scott D. Anthony and Erik
A. Roth present a groundbreaking framework for predicting outcomes
in the evolution of any industry. Based on proven theories outlined
in Christensen's landmark books The Innovator's Dilemma and The
Innovator's Solution, Seeing What's Next offers a practical,
three-part model that helps decision-makers spot the signals of
industry change, determine the outcome of competitive battles, and
assess whether a firm's actions will ensure or threaten future
success. Through in-depth case studies of industries from aviation
to health care, the authors illustrate the predictive power of
innovation theory in action.
