David Harvey
R863 Discovery Miles 8 630 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Look of Jazz "David's photographs perfectly illustrate the passion, creativity and commitment of these musicians, and distil the atmosphere of live jazz in dazzling detail." Helen Mayhew, Jazz Broadcaster The Look of Jazz is a collection of 90 photographs of musicians taken by photographer and musician David Harvey. The book includes exclusive interviews with 24 of the featured musicians in which they talk about their own stories, inspirations and views on jazz. The portraits include a cross section of musicians, several of whom are variously club owners, educators, journalists and contribute in different ways to the continuing development of the jazz scene. Among the American and European artists featured are Jerry Bergonzi, Kirk Lightsey, Don Weller, Emilia Martensson, Gareth Lockrane, Julian Siegel, Tristan Mailliot and Nikki Iles alongside other leading figures on the jazz scene. "I have also included some less well-known but amazing players in recognition of their contribution to the jazz tradition," says David. The Look of Jazz includes portraits from two exhibitions of David Harvey's work, In the Moment and One More Time... Journalist, broadcaster and musician Jay Rayner called the first of these "a very lovely exhibition of terrific photographs of jazz musicians."

Athenian Democratic Origins - and Other Essays (Hardcover, New): Geoffrey de Ste. Croix Athenian Democratic Origins - and Other Essays (Hardcover, New)
Geoffrey de Ste. Croix; Edited by David Harvey, Robert Parker
R7,272 Discovery Miles 72 720 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

In these interconnected essays the late Geoffrey de Ste. Croix defends the institutions of the Athenian democracy, showing that they were much more practical, rational, and impartial than has usually been acknowledged. A major essay provides a new view of Aristotle's use of sources in The Constitution of the Athenians, on which so much of our knowledge of Athenian constitutional history depends. Ste. Croix also argues that commercial factors had much less influence on Greek politics than modern scholars tend to assume, and that there was no such thing in any Greek state as a `commercial aristocracy'. As always, he works out these general positions with the utmost lucidity and pungency, and in meticulous detail. Though written in the 1960s, these hitherto unpublished essays by a great radical historian will still constitute a major contribution to contemporary debate. The editors and other specialists have supplied an updating Afterword to each chapter, and the book contains a thorough index.

An investigation into farming practices throughout a period of seismic change. WINNER of the British Agricultural History Society's 2022 Thirsk Prize WINNER of the 2022 CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title Award "This meticulously researched book gives a detailed and authoritative history of agricultural change in the second half of the twentieth century. The book skilfully weaves together the hitherto underexplored individual returns of the Farm Management Survey with oral histories of the farmers who enacted change on the ground to offer an incisive account of the complex technological, political and cultural developments which gave rise to some of the greatest changes in English farming history. It will stand as the key reference point for those with an interest in the history of agricultural change in Britain." Professor Mark Riley, University of Liverpool At the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 British agriculture was largely powered by the muscles of men, women, and horses, and used mostly nineteenth-century technology to produce less than half of the country's temperate food. By 1985, less land and far fewer people were involved in farming, the power sources and technologies had been completely transformed, and the output of the country's agriculture had more than doubled. This is the story of the national farm, reflecting the efforts and experiences of 200,000 or so farmers and their families, together with the people they employed. But it is not the story of any individual one of them. We know too little about change at the individual farm level, although what happened varied considerably between farms and between different technologies. Based on an improbably-surviving archive of Farm Management Survey accounts, supported by oral histories from some of the farmers involved, this book explores the links between the production of new technologies, their transmission through knowledge networks, and their reception on individual farms. It contests the idea that rapid adoption of technology was inevitable, and reveals the unevenness, variability and complexity that lay beneath the smooth surface of the official statistics.

Amidst waves of economic crises, health crises, class struggle and neo-fascist reaction, few possess the clarity and foresight of world-renowned theorist, David Harvey. Since the publication of his bestselling A Brief History of Neoliberalism, Harvey has been tracking the evolution of the capitalist system as well as tides of radical opposition rising against it. In The Anti-Capitalist Chronicles, Harvey introduces new ways of understanding the crisis of global capitalism and the struggles for a better world. While accounting for violence and disaster, Harvey also chronicles hope and possibility. By way of conversations about neoliberalism, capitalism, globalization, the environment, technology, social movements and crises like COVID-19, he outlines, with characteristic brilliance, how socialist alternatives are being imagined under very difficult circumstances. In understanding the economic, political and social dimensions of the crisis, Harvey's analysis in The Anti-Capitalist Chronicles will be of strategic importance to anyone wanting to both understand and change the world.

Hidden Gems of the Black Country - An Appreciation of Britain's Heritage Treasures (Paperback): David Harvey, Eric... Hidden Gems of the Black Country - An Appreciation of Britain's Heritage Treasures (Paperback)
David Harvey, Eric Richardson
R613 Discovery Miles 6 130 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Black Country was given its name because of its extensive coal mining and furnaces and was one of the cradles of the Industrial Revolution. In the South Staffordshire area were deposits of coal, limestone, iron ore and sandstone. These natural resources supplied the huge industrial complexes of the 19th and 20th centuries which had developed from the earlier domestic nail and chain industries. These new heavy industries in the Black Country included iron and steel making, engineering, lock and safe manufacturing, vehicle construction, armament and war-time materiel, rails, locomotives, industrial chain making, sheet iron and steel manufacturing and even boat building, (for the rivers and canals of course), as well as the specialised leather industries of Walsall and glass making in the Stourbridge area of the Stour Valley. The list was endless, but the need to export raw materials and finished goods out of the area, both to nearby Birmingham and to the distant ports meant that canals were being built. Today, most of the heavy industry has gone, as has a lot of the railway lines, but the canals remain mainly for leisure boating and to assist in the natural drainage of the region. But remnants of forgotten times remain with us as either relics of medieval rural life, long lost industry, transport links or pockets of delightful domestic and industrial architecture which are slightly off the beaten track. With the aid of Eric Richardson's drawings taken from his Black Country portfolio, archival photographs and contemporary photographs, this book takes the reader on a tour looking at the some of the "Hidden Gems" of the Black Country that have survived into the 21st century. The ecclesiastical, the civic pride of the Victorians, memorials, conservation areas and buildings and places worthy of restoration as well as the real out of the way "gem" are included in this volume. It is the hope that some of them might induce the reader to make a visit to one of these "Hidden Gems".

The Future of Heritage as Climates Change - Loss, Adaptation and Creativity (Hardcover): David Harvey, Jim Perry The Future of Heritage as Climates Change - Loss, Adaptation and Creativity (Hardcover)
David Harvey, Jim Perry
R4,485 Discovery Miles 44 850 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Climate change is a critical issue for heritage studies. Sites, objects and ways of life all are coming under threat, requiring alternative management, or requiring specific climate change adaptation. Heritage is key to interpreting the societal significance of climate change; notions (and images) of the past are crucial to our understanding of the present, and are used to prompt actions that help society define and achieve a specific and desired future. Relatively little attention has been paid to the critical intersections between heritage and climate change. The Future of Heritage as Climates Change frames the intellectual context within which heritage and climate change can be examined, presenting cases and sub-fields in which the heritage-climate change nexus is being examined and provides synthetic analyses through five overarching themes: The heritage of change among coastal communities: liminality and the politics of engagement Dwelling materials: processes and possibilities; Environmental heritage: meanings of the past - prospects for the future; Blurring the boundaries of nature and culture: the politics of anticipation; Climate change and heritage practice: adaptation and resilience. The Future of Heritage as Climates Change provides scholars, managers, policy makers and students with a much needed examination of heritage and climate change to help make critical decisions in the next several decades.

Food in Antiquity - Studies in Ancient Society and Culture (Hardcover, 2): John Wilkins, David Harvey, Michael J. Dobson Food in Antiquity - Studies in Ancient Society and Culture (Hardcover, 2)
John Wilkins, David Harvey, Michael J. Dobson
R3,942 Discovery Miles 39 420 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Food as a cultural symbol was as important in antiquity as in our own times and Food in Antiquity investigates some of the ways in which food and eating shaped the lives and thoughts of the indigenous peoples of the ancient Mediterranean. In this volume thirty contributors consider aspects of food and eating in the Greco-Roman world. This is the most comprehensive exploration of questions relating to food in antiquity in this country. The authors, some specialists in this field, others with expertise in other areas, use a range of approaches to investigate the production and distribution of food, social, religious and political factors, medicine and diet, cultural identity and contrasts with neighbouring cultures, and food in literature. The volume is designed for both Classicists and those interested in the history of food. The aim is both to illuminate and to entertain, and at the same time to remind the reader that the Greeks and Romans were not only philosophers and rulers of empires, they were also peasant farmers, traders and consumers of foods who considered that what and how they ate defined who they were.

The Enigma of Capital - And the Crises of Capitalism (Paperback, Main): David Harvey The Enigma of Capital - And the Crises of Capitalism (Paperback, Main)
David Harvey
R353 Discovery Miles 3 530 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

For three centuries the capitalist system has shaped western society, informed its rulers, and conditioned the lives of its people. Has the time come to move beyond it? Using his unrivalled knowledge of the subject, Harvey lays bare the follies of the international financial system, looking at the nature of capitalism, how it works and why sometimes it doesn't. He examines the vast flows of money that surge round the world in daily volumes well in excess of the sum of all its economies. He looks at the cycles of boom and bust in the world's housing and stock markets and shows that periodic episodes of meltdown are not only inevitable in the capitalist system but essential to its survival. The Enigma of Capital is a timely call-to-arms for the end of the capitalism, and makes a compelling case for a new social order that would allow us to live within a system that could be responsible, just and humane

Creating Heritage - Unrecognised Pasts and Rejected Futures (Paperback): Thomas Carter, Roy Jones, David Harvey, Iain Robertson Creating Heritage - Unrecognised Pasts and Rejected Futures (Paperback)
Thomas Carter, Roy Jones, David Harvey, Iain Robertson
R1,379 Discovery Miles 13 790 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book investigates the selection process of heritagisation to understand what specific pasts are being selected or rejected for representation, who is selecting them, how and to whom they are being represented and why they are being presented, or dismissed, in the ways that they are. Some aspects of our pasts are venerated and memorialised for a variety of reasons, while others are forgotten or even hidden. This volume, thus, provides examples from across a spectrum. Some phenomena are well-suited to heritagisation, such as animals memorialised for their bravery, long past agricultural techniques and implements, and impressive landscapes. However, this book also deals with products (e.g. tobacco), historical periods (e.g. the Third Reich) and scientific techniques (e.g. genetic modification) with negative connotations that extend beyond their heritage attributes. This volume considers how the actors in the heritage industry admit, valorise, prioritise and rationalise historic resources as heritage products. These findings provide practical examples of how heritage institutions privilege, frame and/or exclude a wide range of heritage items. They also contrast the invocations of sectional (local, national or class based) and more cosmopolitan heritages and consider the extent to which innovation and change are or can be acknowledged within the heritage discourse.

David Harvey 1

Marx's Capital is one of the most important texts of the modern era. The three volumes, published between 1867 and 1883, changed the destiny of countries, politics and people across the world - and continue to resonate today. In this book, David Harvey lays out their key arguments.

In clear and concise language, Harvey describes the architecture of capital according to Marx, placing his observations in the context of capitalism in the second half of the nineteenth century. He considers the degree to which technological, economic and industrial change during the last 150 years means Marx's analysis and its application may need to be modified.

Marx's trilogy concerns the circulation of capital: volume I, how labour increases the value of capital, which he called valorisation; volume II, on the realisation of this value, by selling it and turning it into money or credit; volume III, on what happens to the value next in processes of distribution.

The three volumes contain the core of Marx's thinking on the workings and history of capital and capitalism. David Harvey explains and illustrates the profound insights and enormous analytical power they continue to offer in terms that, without compromising their depth and complexity, will appeal to a wide range of readers, including those coming to the work for the first time.

Seventeen Contradictions and the End of Capitalism (Paperback, Main): David Harvey Seventeen Contradictions and the End of Capitalism (Paperback, Main)
David Harvey 1
R355 Discovery Miles 3 550 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

You thought capitalism was permanent? Think again. David Harvey unravels the contradictions at the heart of capitalism-its drive, for example, to accumulate capital beyond the means of investing it, it's imperative to use the cheapest methods of production that leads to consumers with no means of consumption, and its compulsion to exploit nature to the point of extinction. These are the tensions which underpin the persistence of mass unemployment, the downward spirals of Europe and Japan, and the unstable lurches forward of China and India. Not that the contradictions of capital are all bad: they can lead to the innovations that make capitalism resilient and, it seems, permanent. Yet appearances can deceive: while many of capital's contradictions can be managed, others will be fatal to our society. This new book is both an incisive guide to the world around us and a manifesto for change.

A Brief History of Neoliberalism (Paperback, New Ed): David Harvey A Brief History of Neoliberalism (Paperback, New Ed)
David Harvey
R617 Discovery Miles 6 170 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Neoliberalism - the doctrine that market exchange is an ethic in itself, capable of acting as a guide for all human action - has become dominant in both thought and practice throughout much of the world since 1970 or so. Its spread has depended upon a reconstitution of state powers such that privatization, finance, and market processes are emphasized. State interventions in the economy are minimized, while the obligations of the state to provide for the welfare of its citizens are diminished. David Harvey, author of 'The New Imperialism' and 'The Condition of Postmodernity', here tells the political-economic story of where neoliberalization came from and how it proliferated on the world stage. While Thatcher and Reagan are often cited as primary authors of this neoliberal turn, Harvey shows how a complex of forces, from Chile to China and from New York City to Mexico City, have also played their part. In addition he explores the continuities and contrasts between neoliberalism of the Clinton sort and the recent turn towards neoconservative imperialism of George W. Bush. Finally, through critical engagement with this history, Harvey constructs a framework not only for analyzing the political and economic dangers that now surround us, but also for assessing the prospects for the more socially just alternatives being advocated by many oppositional movements.
