Bei der Herstellung hochreiner Produkte spielt Hygienic Design
moderner Anlagen, Apparate, Komponenten und Prozessraume eine
entscheidende Rolle. Die Lebensmittel-, Futtermittel-, Pharma-,
Kosmetik- und Bioindustrie sind aus hygienischen Grunden, die
Chemische- und Farbenindustrie aus Grunden der Produktreinheit auf
einwandfreie Sauberkeit ihrer Prozesseinrichtungen angewiesen.
Durch Optimierung der Reinigbarkeit lassen sich bei Produkten, die
fur den menschlichen Konsum bestimmt sind, Kontaminationen und
Ruckrufaktionen vermindern bzw. vermeiden und Anforderungen des
Verbraucherschutzes leichter erfullen. In allen Industriezweigen
Technik? Welches sind grundlegende Problembereiche? Welche
konstruktiven Verbesserungen sind moeglich? Neben rechtlichen
Anforderungen werden theoretische Grundlagen, Fragen des Einsatzes
von Werkstoffen, notwendige Oberflachenqualitaten sowie
hygienegerechte Dichtungs- und Maschinenelemente diskutiert. Fur
Anlagen, Apparate, Komponenten, Prozessumgebung und raumliche
Ausstattungen werden anhand vieler konstruktiver Praxisbeispiele
Schwachstellen und Problembereiche sowie Moeglichkeiten zu deren
Verbesserung dargestellt. Das Buch richtet sich an Ingenieure im
konstruktiven Bereich der genannten Industriezweige im Anlagenbau
und in der Zulieferindustrie. Betriebsangehoerige, die fur
Risikoanalysen, Qualitat und Produktsicherheit bei der
Produktherstellung verantwortlich sind, erhalten viele praktische
Hinweise auf apparatives Design.
In spite of the current feelings that today only molecular DNA
analysis is the exact identification method - and that, if DNA
cannot be isolated, it might be better to give up the
identification - the author has used for the same purpose older,
classical methods from physical anthropology to forensic medicine
and especially a recent method of comparison of epigenetic traits,
which proved to be very useful for identification of the family
related skulls in connection with historical, genealogical and
other data. These multidisciplinary methods can serve the same
purpose as the reference method and can be applied in similar cases
all over the world. The monograph presents the identification of 18
collectively interred skulls, supposedly belonging to the Counts of
Celje (15th c.), and to family members, who lived on the territory
of present-day Slovenia. Their kinship is established by comparison
of X-ray images of paranasal cavities (frontal and maxillary
sinuses, and also orbital and nasal cavities), the shape and size
of which are autosomal dominant inherited characters. The
comparison also extends to numerous other, likewise inherited,
epigenetic trait similarities on the skulls. This work will be an
invaluable guide for the identification and verification of kinship
by skulls collectively interred (in family vaults), where isolation
of DNA is no longer possible, even though the skeletal remains may
not be old. This work based on the latest epigenetic research, is
highly relevant for modern non-genetic identification studies. It
is highly recommended to: scientists working on human
identification and studying heredity, forensic scientists, physical
anthropologists, radiologists, stomatologists, paleopathologists,
geneticists, historians and many others.

This moving story of a girl's quest for independence begins in a
"shtetl" in Russia. After a tragedy, Minna Ruben and her family
decide to flee to "der goldener medina"-the golden land-America-to
seek safety, freedom, and success. Minna dreams of becoming a "real
American" but the Rubens face many difficulties in their quest to
succeed.
Eventually, they are forced to work at the Triangle Shirtwaist
Factory. Minna, facing disapproval from a member of her family and
trapped by her job, fears she will never realize her dreams. At her
darkest moment, she finds employment as a seamstress at a Fifth
Avenue mansion. There she learns that wealth does not automatically
solve every problem and bravely steps towards the future she has
chosen.
This book offers an excellent description of the Lower East Side
of Manhattan in the early twentieth century, home to many
immigrants who came to the new world. The vitality and panoply of
characters and customs found on those crowded streets are lovingly
depicted by the author.
In Part 1-Determining Vertical Atmospheric Temperature and Moisture
Profiles from Radiance Data and Validating Atmospheric
Transmittance Models with a Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR)
Spectrometer, two meteorological applications and one environmental
application were investigated. A method to retrieve vertical
atmospheric temperature and moisture profiles by applying a
least-squares solution to atmospheric radiance observed at the
surface in the 4.3-mm carbon dioxide absorption band was analyzed.
The method did not work. Weighting functions calculated between
2250 cm-1 and 2400 cm-1 from the surface looking up at a 45-degree
angle were a maximum at the surface, so no unique solution for
temperature retrieval by height could be determined. Atmospheric
radiances, observed under various meteorological conditions and
viewing angles, were compared to radiances calculated using the
Moderate Resolution Transmittance Code (MODTRAN). The utility of
the FTIR spectrometer for environmental monitoring was demonstrated
by identifying emissions from a coal-burning plant. Constituent
gases identified were CO2, CO, O3, HCl, SO2, and N2O. In Part
2--Spectral Features of Conventional Warhead Explosions, results
are presented from a field test where an FTIR spectrometer was used
to collect data of conventional warhead explosions from 7 December
1998 to 11 December 1998 at Fallon Naval Air Station NV. Data of
controlled detonations of statically displayed Mk 82, Mk 83, and Mk
84 bombs; High-speed Anti-Radiant Missiles (HARM); Tomahawk
Land-Attack Missiles (TLAM); and C-4 plastic explosives were
collected over the 1800 cm-1 to 6000 cm-1 spectral band at
resolutions of 16 cm-1. Spectral plots of the explosions showed
there were unique spectral features associated with some warhead
detonations. The preliminary results of this effort suggest it may
be possible to identify the type of warhead detonated by its
spectral signature alone.
