When reading current human capital management or human resources
management textbooks, it is clear that many do not reflect current
research. Even new Strategic HRM books are only recently reporting
research that has been widely discussed in academic journals over
the last 10 years. Discussion with those who span the
academic/practice worlds shows that they have regularly been struck
by the dissonance between the journals and the texts. They agree
that there should be more commonality but suggest that, although
some of the HRM journal articles may carry some implications for
practice, many do not. They are often vague as to the real
potential value of the research and only outline potential
interventions in a very rudimentary way. Covering a range of topics
which affect the way that human capital is attracted, developed,
managed and supported, this book presents recent research which can
be applied to the real world. Written by practitioners with
academics, each chapter provides an overview of the research, as
well as the links to current human capital management practices and
identifying potential implications for future implementation. The
book is designed to be of interest to academic researchers,
university professors and graduate students, and to management
scientists, industry economists, government officials, public
policy developers and analysts, research and laboratory managers,
marketing, human resources and operations managers, in fact anyone
who is interested at understanding the current progress of human
resources management and human capital development.

recent discoveries and advances, corresponding to our ever-changing
understanding of molecular biology. There are numerous new figures
and photos, along with significantly updated figures in every
chapter. There are also new end-of-chapter questions for every
chapter and many new Unanswered Questions. This textbook is

Innovative and offering a sociological analysis of trade unionism
in the globalized era, this book provides a robust and coherent
comparative analysis of the debate surrounding trade unions and
their renewal. In recent decades, trade unions suffered major
reversals. They experienced declining memberships. Employers were
increasingly assertive if not hostile. Transnational corporations
and state-owned multi-nationals increasingly implement
deteriorating terms and conditions of employment, vulnerable and
insecure job contracts. Using theory and a variety of case studies,
this book explores: the debate about the form of trade unionism;
the bases for collective organization; and the struggle and the
future of trade unionism. This is a must read for all those
studying industrial relations, human resource management, the
sociology of work and employment, economic sociology, economic and
labour geography and business studies in general.
This important new study argues that an historical analysis of the labour-management policies of the Korean family conglomerates, or chaebol, is essential for a complete understanding of the dynamics of South Korean industrial relations. Focusing on the labour-management strategies of the Hyundai Business Group, the book offers a new perspective on the Asian 'tiger' economy. eBook available with sample pages: 0203361105
This is a revised edition of this bestselling title. Michael O'
Donnell, one of the foremost exponents of the technique of wood
turning, explains how to harvest and store timber, and how to make
the best use of the grain pattern and other properties. Turning
green wood can be made so delicate that it is actually translucent,
and the thickness of the wood can be gauged by shining a light
through it as you work. Using clear text and spectacular
photographs to show exactly how this is done, this book demystifies
one of the most admired techniques used by woodturners today. It
also features six inspirational projects to make, including:
cross-grain translucent bowl, cross-grain natural-edge bowl,
end-grain bowl, natural-edge end-grain bowl, natural-edge end-grain
goblet and part-turned bowl.
In recent decades, trade unions have suffered major reversals and
experienced declining memberships. Transnational corporations and
state-owned multi-nationals have increasingly implemented
deteriorating terms and conditions of employment, with vulnerable
and insecure job contracts. In this context, there has been a
wide-ranging debate about the form of trade unionism, the bases for
collective organization and struggle and the future of trade
unionism. This book addresses these questions both theoretically,
in relation to debates, as well as substantively via a series of
selected studies. It is a must read for all those studying
industrial relations, human resource management, the sociology of
work and employment, economic sociology, economic and labor
geography and business studies in general.
