Phonics and the Common Words Teaching and learning spelling are progressive processes, which are structured in this scheme, marrying phonics with 'common words'. Children learn best when spelling is taught systematically and in a structured manner over time. Spelling needs explicit instruction for the majority of children, particularly for those who fail to 'catch it' because of inherent difficulties. The NLS Framework for Teaching (Beard 1998) recommended that successful management of the teaching of spelling should include structured teaching, which involves the following, all of which are an integral part in the My Spelling Workbook series: making it clear what has to be learnt dividing material into manageable chunks teaching in a well considered sequence the use of material in which children make use of hunches and prompts regular testing for progress immediate feedback Matching Teaching Methods to Learning Styles This phonic based, multisensory spelling series introduces strategies that feature Look, Say, Trace, Cover, Write and Check. The series promotes independent learning of spelling in context and features a proven metacognitive approach to spelling. The metacognitive approach encompasses logical and systematic thinking, combined with the skills of visualisation, emotion and creativity. Through using all aspects of thinking, children not only learn how to spell but also learn how to retain and use these words in context. Success with this series is achieved through the reinforcement activities provided in the My Spelling Workbook series. These workbooks cover the strategies in a fun, creative way ensuring that both the child and the teacher enjoy the learning process. The Teachers Guides provide the metacognitive strategies. These are clearly outlined using flash cards, assessment sheets, extra activities, guidelines for use with children with special needs, extension activities for more able children, dictation, word lists and answers. Each workbook contains 18 lists of phonic based, commonly used words to develop a base vocabulary for primary school children. These help to develop independent spellers through a variety of activities including: word building memory tests word study word puzzles discovering patterns in words. Interactive spelling activities to accompany My Spelling Workbook B are available to download.

R323 Discovery Miles 3 230 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

My Spelling Workbook Book A is broken into three developmental levels to cater for the changing needs of children moving into formal schooling. The first section of the book has been designed to consolidate initial, medial and final sounds. Activities require children to exercise both auditory and visual discrimination in readiness for introducing simple spelling strategies. Teaching and learning spelling are progressive processes, which are structured in this scheme, marrying phonics with 'common words'. Children learn best when spelling is taught systematically and in a structured manner over time. Comprehension Through Cloze Book 6 - Combining Cloze and Text Inspection Activities (Copymasters): Prim-Ed Publishing,... Comprehension Through Cloze Book 6 - Combining Cloze and Text Inspection Activities (Copymasters)
Prim-Ed Publishing, R.I.C.Publications
R736 Discovery Miles 7 360 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Detailed drawings and interesting text make up this collection of comprehension activities. The book provides two distinct sections relating to each drawing and text: 1. Cloze activity pages: Each picture-story provides the reader with two exercises. First exercise: The reader is provided with a complete text and shows comprehension by completing the accompanying picture. Second exercise: The reader shows comprehension by completing a cloze task based on the accompanying picture. There is opportunity in some activities for slightly varied answers or drawings. If the answer or drawing provided can be justified by the instruction then it should be seen as acceptable. Cloze comprehension provides an ideal indication of comprehension levels. 2. Comprehension strategy pages: Each text has two additional comprehension pages that focus on a specific comprehension strategy. These pages can be used to teach these comprehension strategies. The texts and activities enable teachers to provide variety to any English language programme. Cloze is a reading comprehension activity in which words are deleted from a text. Readers are required to complete the blanks as they read to construct meaning. When completing a cloze text, readers have to search on either side of the missing word in the sentence to find what should be included. Readers must consider context as well as vocabulary. Cloze is commonly used as an assessment method because of its many advantages. Advantages of cloze: * helps identify reader knowledge and understanding of the reading process; * helps teachers work out the cueing systems readers use to construct meaning; * can assess reader vocabulary and topic knowledge (and can also promote vocabulary production); * helps readers monitor their understanding of a text as they read; * encourages readers to think critically about, and analyse, a text; * reinforces grammatical knowledge because readers need to work out what part of speech is required to fill the gap; and * reinforces syntactical knowledge (the arrangement of words and phrases in a sentence).

This series of five comprehensive books covers all the basics for young children (from four years of age) but is also useful for older pupils who are struggling with phonics and spelling. It develops skills that fit into any phonics or spelling programme. Remove the confusion around phonological awareness and equip children with all the skills needed to conquer the world of words-spelling, reading and writing-with Prim-Ed's must-have new Phonological Awareness Skills series. This series of five comprehensive books covers all the basics for young children (from four years of age) but is also useful for older pupils who are struggling with phonics and spelling. It develops skills that fit into any phonics or spelling programme. This series is an excellent resource to help teachers address the 'Phonological and phonemic awareness' learning outcome of the new Language Curriculum, which for Stages 1 and 2 states that children should be able to 'play with and recognise sounds such as syllables, rhyme, onset-rime and phonemes in spoken words'. This series emphasises the oral element in phonological awareness. Twelve skills are presented in developmental order over the five books and include the following: * Book 1: Auditory Discrimination, Rhyming and Alliteration * Book 2: Segmentation and Syllabification, and Blending * Book 3: Phoneme Matching and Phoneme Isolation * Book 4: Phoneme Completion, and Phoneme Addition and Deletion * Book 5: Phoneme Segmentation, Phoneme Substitution and Phoneme Reversal The last 7 skills relate to phoneme manipulation. The skills are developed through fun, hands-on games and activities for whole-class, small group and pair work, with full instructions (including the actual words to say, if required). The games and activities are perfect for learning stations and station teaching. They can also be used for early finishers to consolidate skills or to motivate young pupils needing extension. All game/activity resources, supporting worksheets if applicable, differentiation ideas, formative and summative assessments and answers are provided. Literature links and suggested websites for games are also included where applicable.

Teaching Writing Strategies uses modelling, guided and independent practice to teach pupils strategies they can use to improve the clarity, correctness and richness of their writing. The focus is on sentences, their structure, punctuation and word choices and on developing editing and proofreading skills and their habitual use. Teaching Writing Strategies is a series of six books with the explicit, overarching aim of teaching the skills and strategies required to improve the clarity, correctness and richness of children's writing. Within the series, children are taught to recognise, choose and use specific strategies. The focus is on the process, rather than on practising, in this instance, specific text types. To this end, priority is given to improving writing at the sentence level. There is a strong hands-on emphasis; that is, there is an expectation that the children will write to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding. Unlike many other writing activity books, the desired outcome is to have the children structuring correct, enriched sentences to more clearly convey ideas and information. The ultimate goal is for them to produce clear, precise writing for a specific purpose and to understand that proofreading and editing is an integral part of the writing process. Each of the 16 units has a page of assessment activities and an assessment writing topic. These should be worked on independently and will: (a) give the teacher a record of individual understanding and achievement; and (b) highlight common points of weakness, which may require further assistance. Teacher recording sheets, a pupil proofreading checklist and a pupil self-evaluation sheet are provided.
