This book was written to provide an in-depth study of the Danish
and Norwegian armies of the Napoleonic Wars. The goal was to
provide a working document which is as accurate as possible,
covering the uniforms of these armies, their weapons and their
evolution as well as their colours and a look at their basic
tactics. Although this is principally a uniform book, historical
background is also provided to place the details in their context.
Most of the information contained in this volume is published in
the English language for the first time. This third volume looks in
depth principally at the Norwegian Army including the regular
infantry, cavalry, including their Colours, Guidons and Standards
and field artillery covering all aspects of their organisation,
uniforms, arms and equipment as well as their Jaegers, light
infantry and ski troops. The specifically Norwegian cannon and
limbers are also covered. Another subject covered by this volume is
the numerous Norwegian and Danish volunteer and militias companies,
some of whom were actively engaged on the field of battle. An in
depth study of the Island of Bornholm is also included. This volume
is illustrated with 54 original full colour plates. Unlike the few
other works in English this book has been conducted with the
assistance of respected Norwegian historians, as well as Danish and
German historians.
This, the fourth volume in Andrew Field's highly praised study of
the Waterloo campaign from the French perspective, depicts in vivid
detail the often neglected final phase the rout and retreat of
Napoleon's army. The text is based exclusively on French eyewitness
accounts which give an inside view of the immediate aftermath of
the battle and carry the story through to the army's disbandment in
late 1815\. Many French officers and soldiers wrote more about the
retreat than they did about the catastrophe of Waterloo itself.
Their recollections give a fascinating insight to the psyche of the
French soldier. They also provide a first-hand record of their
experiences and the range of their reactions, from those who
deserted the colours and made their way home, to those who
continued to serve faithfully when all was lost. Napoleon s own
flight from Waterloo is an essential part of the narrative, but the
main emphasis is on the fate of the beaten French army as it was
experienced by eyewitnesses who lived through the last days of the
campaign.
This book tells the story of the invasion of France at the twilight
of Napoleon's empire. With more than a million men under arms
throughout central Europe, Coalition forces poured over the Rhine
River to invade France between late November 1813 and early January
1814. Three principal army groups drove across the great German
landmark, smashing the exhausted French forces that attempted to
defend the eastern frontier. In less than a month, French forces
ingloriously retreated from the Rhine to the Marne; Allied forces
were within one week of reaching Paris. This book provides the
first complete English-language study of the invasion of France
along a front that extended from Holland to Switzerland.
Admiral Lord Nelson's diamond Chelengk is one of the most famous
and iconic jewels in British history. Presented to Nelson by the
Sultan Selim III of Turkey after the Battle of the Nile in 1798,
the jewel had thirteen diamond rays to represent the French ships
captured or destroyed at the action. A central diamond star on the
jewel was powered by clockwork to rotate in wear. Nelson wore the
Chelengk on his hat like a turban jewel, sparking a fashion craze
for similar jewels in England. The jewel became his trademark to be
endlessly copied in portraits and busts to this day. After
Trafalgar, the Chelengk was inherited by Nelson's family and worn
at the Court of Queen Victoria. Sold at auction in 1895 it
eventually found its way to the newly opened National Maritime
Museum in Greenwich where it was a star exhibit. In 1951 the jewel
was stolen in a daring raid by an infamous cat-burglar and lost
forever. For the first time, Martyn Downer tells the extraordinary
true story of the Chelengk: from its gift to Nelson by the Sultan
of Turkey to its tragic post-war theft, charting the jewel's
journey through history and forging sparkling new and intimate
portraits of Nelson, of his friends and rivals, and of the woman he
loved.
It answers all your questions! The first edition of the
Dictionnaire de la Grande Armee was published in 2002, on the eve
of the great Napoleonic military bicentenary celebrations, which
took place between 2004 and 2015. Since then, a lot of publications
have been brought out; this edition takes this into account and
brings the different sections up to date. The first aim of this
dictionary is to answer amateurs' questions both general and
precise. This book is unique in that it has no equivalent nowadays;
it's a work tool and a reference book which makes often complex and
wide-ranging scattered research easier; it won the Grand Prix
Premier Empire from the Fondation Napoleon when it came out. This
Dictionnaire de la Grande Armee is now an easy, condensed synthesis
which should delight all Napoleon enthusiasts, researchers and
students who are interested in things military. Wherever possible
at the end of the articles, we have indicated the references as
well as the bibliographical route to take in order to refine and
complement the researches. New: in this edition we have 600
biographies of people who had something to do with this military
period, anything of an anecdotal nature which has a link to army
organisation and military memorialists; we have also added 127
biographies of people linked to Napoleonic military history from
the 19th and 20th Centuries, amateurs who were collectors, writers,
historians, painters, etc., like Detaille, Lalauze, Margerand,
Martinien, Rousselot, Saski, Six, etc. This part is completely new.
In this second edition, there are more articles - at least 2 600 -
but they have been padded out and are more precise and in a lot of
cases quite new. The book finishes with a long bibliography. With
all these articles, we hope you will save time in your future
research and that you will discover a lot of new information, not
to mention the pleasure of reading more about the history of this
military epic. This dictionary is a tool which you will use often
and is a must for your bookcase: that's what it's for!
