Noumea - Centre Culturel Jean-Marie Tjibaou (English, Italian, Paperback): Renzo Piano Noumea - Centre Culturel Jean-Marie Tjibaou (English, Italian, Paperback)
Renzo Piano
R1,430 R1,228 Discovery Miles 12 280 Save R202 (14%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This project is also the exploration of "another world", seemingly remote: the Pacific and the culture of ephemeral, the encounter with the great Kanak people and his history suspended between past and future. An adventure that ends with the discovery of an unsuspected affinity: "I'm more Kanak than you are", Renzo Piano will say. Just like the previous monographs, the presented material is unpublished, retrieved thanks to the research and classification in the archives of the Renzo Piano Foundation, and commentated with sketches, notes and memories of Renzo Piano. It becomes a sort of travel journal, intimate and powerful. The stories of Renzo Piano, Marie-Claude Tjibaou, Alban Bensa and Glenn Murcutt were recorded and faithfully transcribed, so that the reader can live the adventure of this project, accompanied by the voice of the protagonists.

The Victorian Art School - Architecture, History, Environment (Hardcover): Ranald Lawrence The Victorian Art School - Architecture, History, Environment (Hardcover)
Ranald Lawrence
R4,138 Discovery Miles 41 380 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Victorian Art School documents the history of the art school in the nineteenth century, from its origins in South Kensington to its proliferation through the major industrial centres of Britain. Charles Rennie Mackintosh's Glasgow School of Art, together with earlier examples in Manchester and Birmingham demonstrate an unprecedented concern for the provision of plentiful light and air amidst the pollution of the Victorian city. As theories of design education and local governance converged, they also reveal the struggle of the provincial city for cultural independence from the capital. Examining innovations in the use of new technologies and approaches in the design of these buildings, The Victorian Art School offers a unique and explicitly environmental reading of the Victorian city. It examines how art schools complemented civic 'Improvement' programmes, their contribution to the evolution of art pedagogy, the tensions that arose between the provincial schools and the capital, and the role they would play in reimagining the relationship between art and public life in a rapidly transforming society. The architects of these buildings synthesised the potential of art with the perfection of the internal environment, indelibly shaping the future cultural life of Britain.

Designing for Play (Paperback, 2nd edition): Barbara E. Hendricks Designing for Play (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Barbara E. Hendricks
R1,596 Discovery Miles 15 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Architects, landscape designers, builders, gardeners and teachers have all at some time been called upon to design a play area. Unfortunately, this diversity has not resulted in a similar diversity of design solutions for this very problematic task. Despite a proliferation of 'how to' books on this subject, playgrounds have remained virtually the same throughout the world since their creation over a century ago. This is not a 'how to' design book. Instead, based on thirty years' experience as a specialist play area designer, Barbara Hendricks details a radically new approach, applying cutting-edge thinking from child development and child psychology to find innovative design solutions, challenging the established notions of play provision. Covering key sociological, public policy, environmental and design issues, this book provides designers with an exploration of and guide to, designing from a 'child's eye' view of the world. Beautifully crafted and copiously illustrated with numerous examples of recently designed playgrounds, this book is not only stimulating and informative, but fun to read and seriously playful in itself. This second edition brings the text up to date from 2001 to 2010 with added discussion about new ideas for play area designs and what has not worked in the past decade.

Adaptive Thermal Comfort: Foundations and Analysis (Paperback): Michael Humphreys, Fergus Nicol, Susan Roaf Adaptive Thermal Comfort: Foundations and Analysis (Paperback)
Michael Humphreys, Fergus Nicol, Susan Roaf
R1,711 Discovery Miles 17 110 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

There has been widespread dissatisfaction with accepted models for predicting the conditions that people will find thermally comfortable in buildings. These models require knowledge about clothing and activity, but can give little guidance on how to quantify them in any future situation. This has forced designers to make assumptions about people's future behaviour based on very little information and, as a result, encouraged static design indoor temperatures. This book is the second in a three volume set covering all aspects of Adaptive Thermal Comfort. The first part narrates the development of the adaptive approach to thermal comfort from its early beginnings in the 1960s. It discusses recent work in the field and suggests ways in which it can be developed and modelled. Such models can be used to set dynamic, interactive standards for thermal comfort which will help overcome the problems inherited from the past. The second part of the volume engages with the practical and theoretical problems encountered in field studies and in their statistical analysis, providing guidance towards their resolution, so that valid conclusions may be drawn from such studies.

New Ways - The Founding of Modernism (Paperback): Nigel Dale New Ways - The Founding of Modernism (Paperback)
Nigel Dale
R921 R769 Discovery Miles 7 690 Save R152 (17%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

New Ways: The Founding of Modernism features the rise during the interwar period of a group of engineers, architects, sculptors, ceramicists, artists, furniture-makers, craftsmen and patrons to the forefront of British art and design. Important to the Founding of Modernism was the cooperation between a group of emigre architects and engineers, and their home-grown counterparts who, between them, found ways to bring into being the strict geometric and modernistic forms that were demanded by the Movement. In the 1920s, the technology of concrete casting was developing very rapidly as was that of steel reinforcement and new developments gave rise to greater possibilities for structures. Initially, expertise, and then the promotion of this new technology to architects and their clients, fell to a number of specialist overseas contracting companies. The early decades of the twentieth century in the UK saw, in place of an architect to contractor relationship, a rise of the new profession of consultant structural engineer. Up to this point, architects had fulfilled the role of both building designer and engineer. The British Modern Movement was profoundly influenced by this group of European emigre architects and engineers, some of whom remained in the UK thus ensuring that the Modern Movement re-emerged and continued in the UK once peace returned to Europe after WWII. Through an expert combination of words and illustrations, the author weaves an illuminating tapestry of people and structures in all sectors of life from residential to worship, media to entertainment, commerce and more thus creating a forceful appreciation of the movement. This fertile period of art, architecture and design was typified by a great commonality of purpose between designers, their clients and patrons. Buildings and artefacts were produced such that their designers might appreciate and wish them for their own use, especially in housebuilding and home-making. Friendships and associations by Modernists in allied professions presented a unified approach to design and patronage.

Designing Kinetics for Architectural Facades - State Change (Hardcover): Jules Moloney Designing Kinetics for Architectural Facades - State Change (Hardcover)
Jules Moloney
R5,335 Discovery Miles 53 350 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Architectural facades now have the potential to be literally kinetic, through automated sunscreens and a range of animated surfaces. This book explores the aesthetic potential of these new types of moving facades.

Critique of theory and practice in architecture is combined here with ideas from kinetic art of the 1960 s. From this background the basic principles of kinetics are defined and are used to generate experimental computer animations. By classifying the animations, a theory of kinetic form called state change is developed. This design research provides a unique and timely resource for those interested in the capacity of kinetics to enliven the public face of architecture.

Four Walls and a Roof - The Complex Nature of a Simple Profession (Paperback): Reinier De Graaf Four Walls and a Roof - The Complex Nature of a Simple Profession (Paperback)
Reinier De Graaf 1
R668 R603 Discovery Miles 6 030 Save R65 (10%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A Financial Times Best Book of the Year A Guardian Best Architecture Book of the Year "Sharp, revealing, funny." -The Guardian "An original and even occasionally hilarious book about losing ideals and finding them again... [De Graaf] deftly shows that architecture cannot be better or more pure than the flawed humans who make it." -The Economist Architecture, we like to believe, is an elevated art form that shapes the world as it pleases. Four Walls and a Roof turns this fiction on its head, offering a candid account of what it's really like to work as an architect. Drawing on his own tragicomic experiences in the field, Reinier de Graaf reveals the world of contemporary architecture in vivid snapshots: from the corridors of wealth in London, Moscow, and Dubai to the demolished hopes of postwar social housing in New York and St. Louis. We meet ambitious oligarchs, developers for whom architecture is nothing more than an investment, and layers of bureaucrats, consultants, and mysterious hangers-on who lie between any architect's idea and the chance of its execution. "This is a book about power, money and influence, and architecture's complete lack of any of them... Witty, insightful and funny, it is a (sometimes painful) dissection of a profession that thinks it is still in control." -Financial Times "This is the most stimulating book on architecture and its practice that I have read for years." -Architects' Journal

Constructing Building Enclosures - Architectural History, Technology and Poetics in the Postwar Era (Paperback): Clifton Fordham Constructing Building Enclosures - Architectural History, Technology and Poetics in the Postwar Era (Paperback)
Clifton Fordham
R1,238 Discovery Miles 12 380 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Constructing Building Enclosures investigates and interrogates tensions that arose between the disciplines of architecture and engineering as they wrestled with technology and building cultures that evolved to deliver structures in the modern era. At the center of this history are inventive architects, engineers and projects that did not settle for conventional solutions, technologies and methods. Comprised of thirteen original essays by interdisciplinary scholars, this collection offers a critical look at the development and the purpose of building technology within a design framework. Through two distinct sections, the contributions first challenge notions of the boundaries between architecture, engineering and construction. The authors then investigate twentieth-century building projects, exploring technological and aesthetic boundaries of postwar modernism and uncovering lessons relevant to enclosure design that are typically overlooked. Projects include Louis Kahn's Weiss House, Minoru Yamasaki's Science Center, Sigurd Lewerentz's Chapel of Hope and more. An important read for students, educators and researchers within architectural history, construction history, building technology and design, this volume sets out to disrupt common assumptions of how we understand this history.

New York: Art and Cultural Capital of the Gilded Age (Paperback): Margaret R. Laster, Chelsea Bruner New York: Art and Cultural Capital of the Gilded Age (Paperback)
Margaret R. Laster, Chelsea Bruner
R1,293 Discovery Miles 12 930 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Fueled by a flourishing capitalist economy, undergirded by advancements in architectural design and urban infrastructure, and patronized by growing bourgeois and elite classes, New York's built environment was dramatically transformed in the 1870s and 1880s. This book argues that this constituted the formative period of New York's modernization and cosmopolitanism-the product of a vital self-consciousness and a deliberate intent on the part of its elite citizenry to create a world-class cultural metropolis reflecting the city's economic and political preeminence. The interdisciplinary essays in this book examine New York's late nineteenth-century evolution not simply as a question of its physical layout but also in terms of its radically new social composition, comprising the individuals, institutions, and organizations that played determining roles in the city's cultural ascendancy.

Richard Lorch, Jacques Laubscher, Henk Visscher, Edwin Hon-wan Chan
R1,309 Discovery Miles 13 090 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The contribution of buildings to climate change is widely acknowledged. This book investigates how building regulatory systems are addressing the current and future effects of climate change, and how these systems can be improved. After presenting a comprehensive overview of how the current building regulatory system developed, some of the inadequacies are identified. The largest part of the book examines the potential for innovative policy solutions to address the real world problem of mitigating and adapting buildings to climate change. This publication contributes significantly to our understanding of the complexities of long-term energy efficiency in buildings. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Building Research & Information journal.

Sir John Soane and the Country Estate (Hardcover): Ptolemy Dean Sir John Soane and the Country Estate (Hardcover)
Ptolemy Dean
R3,243 Discovery Miles 32 430 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

First published in 1999, this volume examines Sir John Soane (1753-1837) who was one of Britain's most inventive architects. His achievements include the Bank of England and the world's first picture gallery at Dulwich, buildings of international importance. His country estate work, inspired by classical antiquity, ranges in scale from the remodelling of existing country houses, such as Wimpole Hall in Cambridgeshire and Aynhoe Park in Northamptonshire, to simple outbuildings. Here we see the emergence of the key themes of his style and the results of his precise attention to proportion, design detail, and light and shade. These are among Soane's finest works. Making full use of the Soane Museum and country house archives, Ptolemy Dean here examines ten country house projects, reconstructing the creative transactions between client and architect, architect and skilled craftsman. It is impossible to understand Soane's intentions without the drawings, sketches and letters which enable us to trace the process of design. With the author's own drawings in watercolour to illustrate Soane's use of light and space, and beautiful photographs by Martin Charles, Sir John Soane and the Country Estate offers an enthralling insight into the work of a great architect. An illustrated inventory, the first fully researched guide to Soane's country house practice, details an architectural legacy that has rarely been matched.

R5,199 Discovery Miles 51 990 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Offering an in-depth consideration of the impact which humanities have had on the processes of architecture and design, this book asks how we can restore the traditional dialogue between intellectual enquiry in the humanities and design creativity.

Written by leading academics in the fields of history, theory and philosophy of design, these essays draw profound meanings from cultural practices and beliefs. These are as diverse as the designs they inspire and include religious, mythic, poetic, political, and philosophical references.

This timely and important book is not a benign reflection on humanities' role in architectural design but a direct response to the increased marginalization of humanities in a technology driven world. The prioritization of technology leaves critical questions unanswered about the relationships between information and knowledge, transcription and translation, and how emerging technologies can usefully contribute to a deeper understanding of our design culture.
