The refurbishment of existing buildings is a crucial yet often neglected subject within sustainable architecture; attention is usually focused on new buildings. Many old buildings waste large amounts of energy and provide poor internal conditions for occupants through poor lighting, poor ventilation, solar penetration and glare, and poor control of heating and cooling. Demolition is an option but the refurbishment alternative is increasingly seen as more sustainable in terms of architectural value, materials use, neighbourhood disruption and waste disposal. In addition, the potential impact of low energy refurbishment is much greater than that for new build since there are many more buildings already in existence than will be built in the next 10 - 20 years, the period over which many CO2 emission targets apply. The book is dedicated to a fresh and interesting building - that can be classified as a little exhibition pavilion. Watching the old images kindly provided by the Franco Albini Foundation Archive, many theoretical and practical aspects of these works do not stand out clearly: the photographic medium seems to be unable to convey topics and suggestions of these experiments. The high concentration of contents normally given to the theme of pavilion seldom makes an architectural manifesto out of this particular typology, but when it happens, so many factors have to be taken into consideration, that the overall perception becomes harder. The fact that the eventual aim of this typology is to advertise something, happens to even raise the rate of complexity, pushing the architect towards a design that must not compete with the advertised brand. Does it seem little to you? It is, anyway, already quite enough to justify treating those "small works" as equals of the bigger and important architectures. The building is overload: proportions, rhythms, geometry and other architectural elements are shown in the book through the usual architectural 3d model and through "invisible edge" views. This way of presenting the buildings helps to understand for the first time, having removed the "chiaroscuro" and the back lighting of the photos, the structure and the exhibition apparatus designed by Albini. As a scientific experiment, important results are revealed: an astonishing presence of "transparency" and a deep and the hard battle among container and content.

Pemba: Spontaneous Living Spaces looks at self-built dwellings and settlements in the case study city of Pemba in the Cabo Delgado region of Mozambique. Self-built houses born from need, in haste and with limited economical resources are often considered to be temporary structures but frequently become an integral part of the urban fabric, representative of a local culture of living. The study is part of the Spontaneous Living Spaces research project, and through a variety of documentation tools, it investigates the evolution of the architectural and urban elements that characterize self-built dwellings in Pemba. The evolution of the spontaneous living culture creates new forms of living in the city connected to local cultural expressions and the environment. These are placed in relation to the traditional and contemporary living cultures, settlement trends and the natural environment. Covering a history of housing in Mozambique and unpacking four settlement types in Pemba, this book is written for academics, professionals and researchers in architecture and planning with a particular interest in African architecture and urbanism.

The book deals with a quite unknown but very dense building: a small kindergarden by Giuseppe Vaccaro. A characteristic way of thinking architecture is here expressed. In those years Vaccaro is involved in experiments on the topic of circular form or centric space. The relation among the geometrical "mark" and typology allow - such a scientific test - to seek and study reciprocal interferences. In the kindergarden the "mark" is the fence, expressing centrifugal space. This book investigate geometric schemes and variations in building to the difficult moment of refurbishment, that have made more damages than benefits, spoiling some important parts. Damages can be measured looking at the actual situation and the model here published. Watching the building and its site today stand out clear the intention of the architect: to build a place with as less parts as possible: a circumference, a line and a curved plan as a roof. The mysterious fence set in the park; its role is to "isolate" something as a clearing in the forest. Remembering the Laugier Cabane rustique, the kindergarden place the work of Vaccaro in the field of modern architecture. Seen today, the sketches and plans of this strange building seem contemporary. Their freshness make them a Koolhas or Hertzberger XXI century drawing.

There is a dearth of collections of scholarly works dedicated wholly to African issues, that comes out of the work done by African scholars and practitioners with both African collaborators and from elsewhere. This volume brings together scholarly works and thoughts that cut across and intertwine the tripods-environment-consciousness, socially just development and African development into options that could deliver on the promise of the SDGs. The notion of ecology has become central to contemporary design discourse. This reflects contemporary concerns for our planet and a new understanding of the primary entanglement of the human species with the rest of the world. The use of the term 'ecology' with design tends to refer to how to integrate ecologies into design and cities and be understood in a biologically-scientific and technical sense. In practice, this scientific-technical knowledge tends to be only loosely employed. The notion of ecology is also often used metaphorically in relation to the social use of space and cities. This book argues that what it calls the 'biological' and 'social' senses of ecology are both important and require distinctly different types of knowledge and practice. It proposes that science needs to be taken much more seriously in 'biological ecologies', and that 'social ecologies' can now be understood non-metaphorically as assemblages. Furthermore, this book argues that design practice itself can be understood much more rigorously, productively and relevantly if understood ecologically. The plural term 'ecologies design' refers to these three types of ecological design. This book is unique in bringing these three perspectives on ecological design together in one place. It is significant in proposing that a strong sense of ecologies design practice will only follow from the interconnection of these three types of practice.
