This book offers 50 innovative ways of looking at your business as a long-term, dynamic, progressive entity. Here you will find 50 ways to ditch the atrophying forces and create an exponentially achieving, high-performance culture in your organisation. Some rules help us, but some don’t. Do you know which to ditch? And do you know how to create a dynamic, learning culture that doesn’t rely on blind bureaucracy? Elon Musk did it with Tesla and Space-X. Pixar does it too. The Israeli Defence Force and US Navy SEALS have been doing it for decades, and their results have been astonishing. In a world of exponential organisations, rule-bound dinosaurs will fall and fade. But you don’t have to. They’re your rules. Break them!
This guide is for use in the field by botanists, nature lovers, eco-tourists, hikers and farmers, for on-the-spot identifications, making it unnecessary to collect specimens and in this way depleting the countryside of its beautiful natural heritage. Features of the title are: Full-colour illustrations and brief descriptions of 614 species of the most common flowering plants, succulents and shrublets found in the four northern provinces: Limpopo, North-West, Gauteng and Mpumalanga. For quick and easy identification plants are placed in eight major categories of flower colour, namely white/cream-coloured; pink, yellow/orange, blue, mauve/purple, red, brown and green flowers. Each plant family is briefly introduced, where possible giving characters to distinguish them from each other. English and Afrikaans vernacular names are included where appropriate. A botanical glossary make botanical terms more comprehensible to the lay person.

In Love with a Stranger is a moving collection of short stories by Johannesburg-based Kaizer Mabhilidi Nyatsumba, whose impressive powers of human observations and acclaimed writing expertise are on display in this book. Contained in it are fascinating short stories written at a time when South Africa was going through an historic political transition that gripped the world’s attention. Although based in South Africa, the stories have a universal appeal. While some may be of greater interest or relevance to people in countries dealing with conflicts or going through transitions, the themes and emotions that the stories touch upon are universal in nature, such as love and fear, among others.

Rebecca and Kate Lund, aka The Delish Sisters, are constantly inspired by the everchanging food industry and love to create beautiful food experiences for clients, friends and family. They enjoy experimenting with new and exotic spices and ingredients, and encouraging people to be a bit adventurous, and in turn see that it’s so simple to do themselves too! Rebecca and Kate’s recipes are fresh, wholesome, colourful, seasonal and ‘mostly healthy’. There are more indulgent dishes and treats, but they keep the eating experience balanced and as inclusive as possible – there are plenty of sugar-free, glutenfree recipes, delicious vegetarian options and tasty vegan food. Knowing the origins of our food is important and they have developed recipes that make use of ‘whole foods’ and celebrate the least refi ned versions of ingredients. They love what they do, where they live and the power that food has to bring people together. Delish Sisters – Tasty Food Made With Love is clear evidence of this and is a must for anyone who enjoys delicious, well-balanced meals shared with friends and family.

Bulelwa Mabasa was born into a ‘matchbox’ family home in Meadowlands, Soweto, at the height of apartheid. In My Land Obsession, she shares her colourful Christian upbringing, framed by the lived experiences of her grandparents, who endured land dispossession in the form of the Group Areas Act and the migrant labour system. Bulelwa’s world was irrevocably altered when she encountered the disparities of life in a white-dominated school. Her ongoing interest in land justice informed her choice to study law at Wits, with the land question becoming central in her postgraduate studies. When Bulelwa joined the practice of law in the early 2000s as an attorney, she felt a strong need to build on her curiosity around land reform, moving on to form and lead a practice centred on land reform at Werksmans Attorneys. She describes the role played by her mentors and the professional and personal challenges she faced. My Land Obsession sets out notable legal cases Bulelwa has led and lessons that may be drawn from them, as well as detailing her contributions to national policy on land reform and her views on how the land question must be inhabited and owned by all South Africans.
Why is it that some people work hard, yet remain poor? How is it that others seem to rise out of poverty and become affluent in a short span of time? The answers are in this little book, which everyone should read at some point in their life. If they did, they would know how to become rich relatively quickly. If not, they might spend years working back-breakingly hard, without ever breaking even. That’s how powerful the principles contained in this book are. The answers to escaping poverty and becoming wealthy are actually well known; they have been tested by time and replicated in different countries, by families and by individuals who have become astonishingly rich. And when you simply follow the principles, they work. So what are these principles that genuinely lift people out of poverty and ensure their personal wealth? Here are 50. They all work. They will make you richer. They remove the emotion, the politics and the clutter from our thoughts about wealth, and they go straight to the heart of one simple issue: what it genuinely takes to become rich. Prepare to train your brain for wealth. Prepare to become ‘poverty proof ’ for life.
To respect environment in the broad sense, we must first develop a respect for our own environment - the living world of plants and small wildlife that surrounds us in our homes and gardens. Growing plants is one of the most fundamental ways in which we can introduce our children to the wonder and magic of the natural environment. It is also one of the most accessible, as all children, regardless of financial, geographical or social circumstances, can try their hand at it - even if their gardening efforts are limited to nurturing a few tomato seeds in a tin on the window sill. In Gardening is fun, will encourage young - and old - to explore the pleasures of gardening. The message is, conveyed by means of simple text and lively, colourful illustrations, is that gardening can be fun, easy and inexpensive - and that you certainly do not need a large garden to enjoy the benefits. The title abounds with practical suggestions on how to grow plants, interspersed with down-to-earth ecological information aimed at fostering an environmentally-friendly approach to gardening. The content includes, among others, chapters on: Garden habitats; hints for green-finger gardening; growing vegetables; your garden - a wildlife sanctuary; managing problems.
Paul Erasmus’s searing account of his time as a security policeman during apartheid is nothing short of explosive. In this book, remarkable for its candour as for its effort at Erasmus’s attempt at coming to a reckoning with the atrocities he committed or was party to, we read of the National Party’s determination to destroy Winnie Mandela, to terrorise anti-apartheid activists, and to smear and compromise people who did not accept the ‘Volk en Vaderland’ way. Erasmus lays bare the corruption and power mongering in the South African Police and the fascist associations that some cops were linked to. He names names, but ultimately asks himself how he could have done what he did. His testimony before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission was extensive and allowed a view into the world of Stratcom. This book takes that testimony a step further.

Beyond The Secret Elephants is the continuing story of Gareth Patterson’s almost two decades of research into the secretive Knysna elephants. Significantly, however, it also reveals his startling discovery of a much more mysterious being than the elephants – a relict hominoid known to the indigenous forest people as the Otang. Gareth had long heard about the existence of the otang from the local people but he mentioned it only briefly in The Secret Elephants, focusing instead on his rediscovery of the Knysna elephants and their survival against the odds. He was reluctant to blur the story of the elephants with his findings about the otang. That is, until now. The possible existence of relict hominoids is today gaining momentum worldwide with ongoing research into Bigfoot in North America, the Yeti in the Himalayas and the Orang Pendek in Sumatra. Eminent conservationists and scientists – among them Dr Jane Goodall, Dr George Schaller and Professor Jeff Meldrum – have publicly stated that they are open-minded about the possible existence of these cryptid beings. In the course of his unannounced research into the otang Gareth heard many accounts – mostly spontaneous and unprompted – of otang sightings by others in the area over a number of years. These accounts, documented in the book, are astonishingly consistent both in the descriptions of the otang and in the shocked reactions of the individuals who saw them. Gareth Patterson’s work supports the increasing realisation that humankind still has much to learn about the natural world and the mysteries it holds. The possibility that we may be sharing our world with other as yet unidentified hominoids is today being viewed as something that should not be discounted. And as humankind, we need to reassess our role and our responsibility towards all forms of life that coexist with us on planet Earth.
