Spiritual and Practical Guide for Teens
In this groundbreaking book—available in paperback for the first time—renowned Bible scholar, Anglican bishop, and bestselling author N. T. Wright argues that Christians have not distorted the Bible’s message about heaven and what happens after we die. For years, Christians have been asking, "If you died tonight, do you know where you would go?" It turns out that many believers have been giving the wrong answer. It is not heaven. Wright outlines the present confusion about a Christian’s future hope and shows how it is deeply intertwined with how we live today. Wright asserts that Christianity’s most distinctive idea is bodily resurrection, and provides a magisterial defense for a literal resurrection of Jesus. Wright then explores our expectation of "new heavens and a new earth," revealing what happens to the dead until then and what will happen with the "second coming" of Jesus. For many, including many Christians, it will come as a great surprise to learn that heaven comes to earth instead of us going to heaven. Wright convincingly argues that what we believe about life after death directly affects what we believe about life before death. For if God intends to renew the whole creation—and if this has already begun in Jesus’s resurrection—the church cannot stop at "saving souls" but must anticipate the eventual renewal by working for God’s kingdom in the wider world, bringing healing and hope in the present life.
Jesus is the eternal King At first glance, it seems surprising that Jesus would call a man like Matthew to become one of His disciples. As a small-time tax collector, Matthew would have been despised by the Jewish people, who viewed those in the profession as traitors to Rome. But the fact that Matthew was educated, literate, and also familiar with Jewish law and customs made him the ideal candidate to not only accompany Jesus during His earthly ministry but also record all that he witnessed. The result is the Gospel we have today. Matthew shows how Jesus, as the promised Messiah, is worthy of our hope. He shows how Jesus, as the eternal King, is worthy of our complete devotion . . . and our complete submission to Him. The Jeremiah Bible Study Series captures Dr. David Jeremiah's forty-plus years of commitment to teaching the Word of God. In each study, he will help you understand what the Bible says, what it meant to the people at the time it was written, and what it means to you today. Along the way, you will gain insights into the text, identify key stories and themes, and be challenged to apply the truth you find in your life.
How to serve with generosity and love. Service is giving, and giving is the very essence of the gospel. God gave His only begotten Son. Jesus gave His life on the cross. The Holy Spirit gives us the power to resist sin and follow God's commands. It is from this abundance of what we have been given that God calls us to freely give ourselves-to actually develop a mindset in which we look first to the needs of others above our own interests. In Developing a Servant's Heart, Dr. Charles Stanley shows how each of us have been equipped, empowered, and charged to do this as we follow the example of Jesus-the Supreme Servant. With over 1 million copies sold, the Charles F. Stanley Bible Study Series is a unique approach to Bible study, incorporating biblical truth, personal insights, emotional responses, and a call to action. Each study draws on Dr. Stanley's many years of teaching the guiding principles found in God's Word, showing how we can apply them in practical ways to every situation we face. This edition of the series has been completely revised and updated, and includes two brand-new lessons from Dr. Stanley. Each of the twelve lessons includes: Overview: A brief look at what is covered in the lesson Life's Questions: A teaching from Dr. Stanley that unpacks the topic of the lesson Living the Principle: Application and Bible study questions based on the key points Reflection: Key takeaways to put into practice today and tomorrow
For several decades, "Foundational Issues in Christian Education" has been a key text for many Christian education courses. Its perceptive analysis coupled with clear writing make it a resource without peer. Christian education expert Robert Pazmino guides readers through a comprehensive discussion of the interdisciplinary foundations of Christian education, calling all Christian educators to reevaluate the fundamentals of their discipline. This updated edition includes interactions with professional developments over the past ten years and appendixes that assess the impact of postmodernism as an educational philosophy. In addition, each chapter includes "points to ponder" for personal reflection or classroom use. Praise for Previous Editions "In a clear and concise way the author introduces each of the foundational areas by exploring its purpose, current trends, and inherent difficulties. . . . His surveys are accurate and his critiques are pointed, insightful, and fair, consistently calling the educator to examine each of the theories in light of one's biblical and theological framework. . . . An outstanding strength of this work is the way it consistently examines foundational considerations in light of the stated purpose of education."--Darwin K. Glassford, "Journal of the Evangelical Theological Society" "[A] basic work on the philosophical and theological foundations for education within the church. . . . [It is] certainly worthy of note. . . . Pazmino's work always attempts to integrate insights from social science with a thoroughly biblical worldview. . . . This book is highly recommended for the libraries of professional staff engaged in the educational ministry of thechurch."--Robert C. De Vries, "Calvin Theological Journal" "A feature . . . that should be appreciated is the application of the content to evangelical concerns. This is usually done in the form of questions. Besides being helpful to evangelical educators, it has the potential of promoting understanding by nonevangelicals of the direction and enthusiasms of the evangelical."--Eugene S. Gibbs, "Religious Education" "Theology has much to contribute to education and Pazmino has made a valuable contribution in drawing attention to that point."--Kenneth Wilson, "Expository Times"
The guiding pedagogical document for Jesuit education worldwide was definitively set out in a 1599 tome entitled Ratio Atque Instituto Studiorum Societatis Jesu, "The Plan and Methodology of Jesuit Education." This plan has been praised by scholars from Francis Bacon in the seventeenth century to Harry Broudy and Paul Shore in our day. Some scholars and educators, upon learning of this tradition for the first time, have called it a "best-kept secret." And so it was timely that, at the dawn of the new millennium, an invitational 400th anniversary celebration of the Ratio Studiorum would be held at Fordham University in October of 1999. The fruit of the scholarly papers presented there make up the substance of this book. In addition, two key documents of the late-twentieth-century renewal of Jesuit education are included in the appendixes of this volume. Both The Characteristics of Jesuit Education (1986) and Ignatian Pedagogy: A Practical Approach (1993) have been out of print in English and are provided here in full.

FUNCITIONAL IMAGES OF THE RELIGIOUS EDUCATOR is one of those rare and precious books which helps religious educators explore and clarify their own special identity as religious educators. This special identity is revealed in ten basic functional roles which are central to religious education enactment. The author shows that while religious educators perform most and possibly all these ten basic functional roles, nonetheless one predominates. This dominant role, plus the way the religious educator harmoniously integrates the other roles into the dominant one, is the key to each religious educator's own special identity.

The Westminster Assembly of 1643 to 1649 produced three documents of lasting value to the Church: The Westminster Confession of Faith, The Larger Catechism, and The Shorter Catechism. Since then, The Shorter Catechism has become well known as a manual of doctrine for both children and adults who require an introduction to the Christian faith. It is an ideal way to give structure to the discipling of new believers. This edition contains the addition of scripture proof texts and notes by Roderick Lawson.

Using Josef Pieper's Leisure as a point of departure, the contributors to this volume share a mutual concern for the diminishing role of the liberal arts in Catholic higher education. The overwhelming impression they share is that U.S. Catholic universities, with notable exceptions, have forgotten the very goal of university education, and especially Catholic university education: to aid in forming young men and women to pursue the truth and helping them to become freer persons.
Ask almost any priest what his or her biggest headache is and the answer is likely to be 'coming up with ideas for including children in worship'. Here is the answer to those prayers - a whole year's worth of activities and ideas complete with artwork and visual aids. These sixty outlines have been developed and used in an Anglican parish church over the last eight years by a professional educationalist, artist and experienced children's church leader. The worship outlines include simple children's liturgies and a complete lesson or story plan that harmonizes with what the adults are doing in church on the same day. Through fun ideas, children encounter a real aspect of the Christian faith focused on a theme to be found in the Gospel of the day. Each outline includes a variety of options which make them workable with small and large groups of children or single groups of mixed ages.Illustrated throughout, the text and artwork appears on the accompanying CD Rom in full colour for downloading and printing or copying. |
