Of all the books of the Bible, few are as fascinating or as
intimidating as Revelation. Four grim horsemen, the Antichrist, the
ten-horned beast, the ultimate battle at Armageddon, the "mark of
the beast." It's no wonder that these images have griped the
imagination of so many--and have been variously interpreted as
symbolizing everything from Hitler and Gorbachev to credit cards
and the Internet. Is the book of Revelation a blueprint for the
future? A book of powerful symbolic imagery with warnings for the
church? Is it essentially an imaginative depiction of historical
events in the first century? Four Views on the Book of Revelation
explores four interpretations of the book of the Apocalypse:
Preterist - a historical interpretation, arguing that most of
John's prophecies occurred in the first century, soon after his
writing of them. Idealist - a spiritual or symbolic interpretation,
arguing that the events in Revelation are not literal, and that
apocalyptic literature requires a different approach than the
Gospels or Epistles. Classical dispensationalism - a literal
interpretation based on a reading of Revelation that pays close
attention to the rules of grammar and the separate eras of
covenantal history. Progressive dispensationalism - a modification
of classical that has its root in the understanding of Christ's
reign beginning immediately after the resurrection. The
Counterpoints series presents a comparison and critique of
scholarly views on topics important to Christians that are both
fair-minded and respectful of the biblical text. Each volume is a
one-stop reference that allows readers to evaluate the different
positions on a specific issue and form their own, educated opinion.
"Fasting" has been called the forgotten spiritual discipline.
Although it is found throughout Scripture, it is often neglected by
modern Christians. Is there power in fasting? Does it really make a
difference? How does fasting relate to prayer? In this study,
Ashlee Alley considers the biblical basis for fasting and explores
ways modern Christians can make this ancient discipline part of
their faith walk. "Converge Bible Studies" is a series of topical
Bible studies based on the "Common English Bible." Each title in
the series consists of four studies on a common topic or theme.
"Converge" can be used by small groups, classes, or individuals.
Primary Scripture passages are included for ease of study, as are
questions designed to encourage both personal reflection and group
conversation. The topics and Scriptures in "Converge" come together
to transform readers relationships with others, themselves, and
God."
Godly Play (R) is an imaginative approach to working with children,
an approach that supports, challenges, nourishes, and guides their
spiritual quest. Revised and updated, The Complete Guide to Godly
Play, Volume 2 offers new concepts, new terminology, new
illustrations, and a new structure that stem from more than 10
years of using Godly Play with children across the world. 30 to 40
percent of the text is new or revised, including a new lesson,
revised Introduction, and a new full Appendix.
Part of the Loyalty series, Loyalty and Disloyalty deals firmly
with the fine line that distinguishes between the two attitudes,
and talks about the defining moments we should all be aware of in
our own lives, and the lives of those around us. This book is a
roadmap for both leaders and followers. As leaders, we need wisdom
to guide our sensitivities. Picking up disloyalty early on in those
around us can prevent disaster later. Taking action swiftly and
firmly is vital. As followers, we need to be keenly aware when our
own loyalty to our shepherds is being diverted within ourselves.
Though a primary requirement of God for leaders, very little has
been written on this subject. In this book, Dag Heward-Mills
outlines very important principles, with the intention of
increasing the stability of churches. So relevant and practical is
the content of this book that it has become an indispensable tool
for many church leaders. Dag Heward-Mills is the founder of
Lighthouse Chapel International, which has become a worldwide
denomination. He is the author of several best-selling books and
his radio, TV and internet programs reach millions around the
world. Other outreaches include conferences for pastors and
ministers, and the renowned Anagkazo Bible Ministry & Training
Centre. "...a life-changing book. I believe your life will be
greatly enriched and renewed as you absorb and apply the truth it
brings to light. Surely it is God's desire that you become a leader
who has purpose, and is consistent in your personal life and
ministry. You will not only perceive your need to be a great
leader, but you will understand how to achieve it with victory and
confidence." - John Delgado, President, Vision International
University, Florida, USA.
What is a good education? What is it for? To answer these
questions, Stratford Caldecott shines a fresh light on the three
arts of language, in a marvelous recasting of the Trivium whereby
Grammar, Dialectic, and Rhetoric are explored as Remembering,
Thinking, and Communicating. These are the foundational steps every
student must take towards conversion of heart and mind, so that a
Catholic Faith can be lived out in unabashed pursuit of the True,
the Good, and the Beautiful. Beauty in the Word is a unique
contribution to bringing these bountiful aspects of the Real back
to the center of learning, where they rightfully belong. If your
concern is for the true meaning of education for your children,
here is the place to begin.
"Those responsible for new initiatives in Catholic schooling
have a chance to recreate the inner spirit of education and not
just its outer frame. They will not easily find a programme more
inspirational than the one presented here." - Aidan Nichols
"Stratford Caldecott offers a rare combination of intelligence
and profound vision, yet combines this with accessibility and
luminous transparency." - Catherine Pickstock
It's possible to learn how to live with a faith that is so
confident in God that it can't be shaken--even in the most
unpredictable and chaotic times. In this five-session video Bible
study, bestselling author and teacher Christine Caine invites you
to move into a deeper intimacy with God than you have ever
known--and let him heal your heart and take away your fear.
Including video discussion questions, Bible exploration, and
personal study material, Caine points out the way to developing a
relentless faith so that the next time life throws you a curve
ball--and life likely will--you will be able to navigate your way
through, still living the adventure he planned for you...and maybe
even a version of the adventure that's beyond what you could ever
have imagined. Sessions include: Expect the Unexpected - Embracing
God's control over our own. Unexpected People - Learning how to
look and see what God is doing. An Unexpected Assignment - How God
interrupts our carefully made plans and why. Unexpected Endings
Bring New Beginnings - Focusing on what God has been up to in our
lives. Unexpected Resurrection - Renewing our faith in the final
hope. Many of us have been trained to fear the unexpected and want
everything to be "under control," but God wants us to anticipate
the unexpected with a faith-filled perspective rooted in trust. He
has never been taken by surprise. This pack contains one study
guide and one DVD.
The canon for Catholic social teaching spreads to six hundred
pages, yet fewer than two pages are devoted to Catholic social
learning or pedagogy. In this long-needed book, Roger Bergman
begins to correct that gross imbalance. He asks: How do we educate
("lead out") the faith that does justice? How is commitment to
social justice provoked and sustained over a lifetime? To address
these questions, Bergman weaves what he has learned from thirty
years as a faith-that-does-justice educator with the best of
current scholarship and historical authorities. He reflects on
personal experience; the experience of Church leaders, lay
activists, and university students; and the few words the tradition
itself has to say about a pedagogy for justice. Catholic Social
Learning explores the foundations of this pedagogy, demonstrates
its practical applications, and illuminates why and how it is
fundamental to Catholic higher education. Part I identifies
personal encounters with the poor and marginalized as key to
stimulating a hunger and thirst for justice. Part II presents three
applications of Catholic social learning: cross-cultural immersion
as illustrated by Creighton University's Semestre Dominicano
program; community-based service learning; and the teaching of
moral exemplars such as Dorothy Day, Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.,
and Archbishop Oscar Romero. Part III then elucidates how a
pedagogy for justice applies to the traditional liberal educational
mission of the Catholic university, and how it can be put into
action. Catholic Social Learning is both a valuable, practical
resource for Christian educators and an important step forward in
the development of a transformative pedagogy.
." . . In Diagramming the Scriptures. . . the curriculum starts
with the simple sentence, adds precept upon precept until the
learner is able to master complex sentences. . . As each concept is
introduced, the student has plenty of practice, followed by
quizzes, and later a cumulative test over the entire text. As an
educator, a homeschool parent, and a tutor I see this curriculum as
an excellent choice for a homeschool, a Christian school classroom,
or for an individual of any age who is interested in studying
grammar or God's Word, word by word." Deana Haines, Families for
Home Education Executive Director ." . .I am quite pleased to
recommend your book to college professors as an excellent addition
to their basic texts in teaching English grammar. . . Since your
examples and exercises utilize Bible sentences, your book is also a
valuable asset to the study of hermeneutics." Jim Anderson,
Chancellor, Midwestern Baptist College, SBC "Diagramming the
Scriptures is a unique way to help focus the Bible student on the
words and meanings of Scripture. I commend Shirley Forsen for
providing this excellent book and recommend it to all who desire to
"go deeper" in their study of God's Word." Dr John A Hash, Bible
Pathway Ministries ." . .I recommend Diagramming the Scriptures to
all scholars to clarify interpretations of all books and to all
teachers of grammar." Glada Kelley, retired teacher and librarian
." . .The best and unique part of Miss Forsen's book is that Bible
verses are used for the examples and exercises. This teaches the
student an important aspect of "rightly dividing the word of
truth": understanding how the structure of the verse influences its
meaning. Diagramming the Scriptures teaches necessary skills, both
educational and spiritual." Laura Blunk, college freshman
Justin Martyr (c.100-165) was one of the key apologists of the
Early Church. Oxford Early Christian Texts presents a new critical
edition of the Greek text of the Apologies with introduction,
English translation, and textual commentary.
Editors Denis Minns and Paul Parvis take a searching look at the
text transmitted by the single fourteenth-century manuscript
containing the works of Justin. They attempt to see behind the work
of the Byzantine editor, and his predecessors, who sought to make
sense of the badly damaged text before them. The commentary is
designed not merely to annotate the text but to identify and draw
out Justin's train of thought and the structure of his argument. It
explains the readings adopted in the text by setting Justin's Greek
within his Christian, Hellenistic, and philosophical contexts.
The introduction traces the complex history of the text in
manuscript and print and discusses the puzzling relationship of the
Second Apology to the First, and suggests a new solution. Justin is
located against the background of the diversity of Christianity in
the second century. A new understanding of Justin emerges from this
work. His thought is often sharper, and his language more pointed
than has been recognised, and the difficulty of the task he set
himself of bridging the enormous gap between two cultures is
clearly shown.
Listening to
God Does God speak to us today? Although most of us can talk with
ease to our best friend, many of us aren't so good at being quiet
and hearing what our friend has to say. So it is with God. For true
communication to happen with Him, we must learn to listen through
understanding His Word. In Listening to God, Dr. Charles Stanley
presents a sound way to explore God's Word and hear His truths. He
reveals how we can identify with passages of Scripture, reflect on
their meaning, and then develop practical steps to apply what we
have learned. The Charles F. Stanley Bible Study Series is a unique
approach to Bible study, incorporating biblical truth, personal
insights, emotional responses, and a call to action. Each study
draws on Dr. Stanley's many years of teaching the guiding
principles found in God's Word, showing how we can apply them in
practical ways to every situation we face.
