This book covers the principles of permanent magnetism, magnet processing, and applications in a series of interlocking chapters written by experts in each area. Born of experience of the Concerted European Action on Magnets, it is a definitive account of the field, designed to be read by physicists, materials scientists, and electrical engineers.
Brushless permanent-magnet motors provide simple, low maintenance, and easily controlled mechanical power. Written by two leading experts on the subject, this book offers the most comprehensive guide to the design and performance of brushless permanent-magnetic motors ever written. Topics range from electrical and magnetic design to materials and control. Throughout, the authors stress both practical and theoretical aspects of the subject, and relate the material to modern software-based techniques for design and analysis. As new magnetic materials and digital power control techniques continue to widen the scope of the applicability of such motors, the need for an authoritative overview of the subject becomes ever more urgent. Design of Brushless Permanent-Magnet Motors fits the bill and will be read by students and researchers in electric and electronic engineering.
The aim of this book is to help engineers understand, design and evaulate the switched reluctance motor (SRM) and its control. The SRM is a relative newcomer to the family of electric motors and is unusual both for having salient teeth on rotor and stator, and for its complete dependence on its power electronic controls. It is however very versatile. Part of the design problem is that the SRM does not conform to the classical design techniques used for classical DC and AC electric motors. The practical design engineer is confronted with a machine that has no steady state, has extreme localized saturation and requires an unfamiliar power-electronic converter to make it work at all. The geometry is beguilingly simple, and everything about the motor and its control seems at first to be a gift to the production engineer. Yet the attainment of good designs and satisfactory performance is practically impossible by traditional design methods. Tim Miller is the author of "Brushless Permanent-Magnet Reluctance Motor Drives".
Rapid progress in power electronics, microelectronics, and modern control technology during the past three decades has made possible the use of brushless servomotors in motion control. The book is intended as a practical introduction for engineers and students who are not familiar with servomotors and motion control. The control methods described are useful for practising engineers who want to deepen their knowledge of motion control in manufacturing systems. It covers the interdisciplinary areas of power electronics, drive electronics, mechatronics and control electronics, power semiconductor devices, microprocessors, circuits, controllers, sensors, magnetic materials, design methods, and applications.

The first covers the fundamentals of acoustic noise and vibration so readers have the necessary tools to analyze the problems and explains the surface waves, spring-mass models, forcing harmonics, and mode shapes that are utilized in modeling and analyzing acoustic noise and vibration. The second applies these fundamentals to switched reluctance motors and provides examples for determining the sources of any acoustic noise in switched reluctance motors. In the final chapter two SRM designs are presented and proposed as replacements for permanent magnet machines in a residential HVAC application and a hybrid-electric propulsion application. It also shows a high-power and compact converter design for SRM drives. Features: Comprehensive coverage of switched reluctance motor drives from fundamental principles to design, operation, and applications A specific chapter on electric motor usage in industrial, residential, commercial, and transportation applications to address the benefits of switched reluctance machines Two chapters address acoustic noise and vibration in detail Numerous illustrations and practical examples on the design, modeling, and analysis of switched reluctance motor drives Examples of switched reluctance motor and drive design

The ultrasonic motor, invented in 1980, utilizes the piezoelectric effect in the ultrasonic frequency range to provide the motive force. (In conventional electric motors the motive force is electromagnetic). The result is a motor with unusually good low-speed high-torque and power-to-weight characteristics. It has already found applications in camera autofocus mechanisms, medical equipment subject to high magnetic fields, and motorized car accessories. Its applications will increase as designers become more familiar with its unique characteristics. This book is the result of a collaboration between the inventor and an expert in conventional electric motors: the result is an introduction to the general theory presented in a way that links it to conventional motor theory. It will be invaluable both to motor designers and to those who design with and use electric motors as an introduction to this important new invention.
