An electrifying one-woman play inspired by the true story of a woman who served as a political assassin during South Africa’s transition to democracy. As the protagonist confronts her past, she becomes a powerful symbol of defiance and compassion in a story of resistance and survival in a conflict-torn country.
Isidlamlilo/ The Fire Eater is an electrifying one-woman play inspired by the true story of a woman who served as a political assassin in the build-up to South Africa’s first democratic elections. Zenzile Maseko, the protagonist, is a 60-year-old Zulu grandmother living in a women’s hostel in Durban. Falsely declared dead by the Department of Home Affairs, she finds herself cast into a Kafkaesque nightmare that forces her to confront her past.
Flown in on the wings of the Impundulu (the lightning bird), Zenzile’s story weaves a magical and terrifying tapestry. She draws on myth, religious symbolism and traditional beliefs as she shares the realities – at times brutal, at times forgiving – of survival in South Africa. Her story touches on what it means to live through political violence, the transition to democracy, the brutality of inequality, health epidemics like HIV/AIDS, patriarchy, and the apathetic bureaucracy of government departments.
Ultimately, Isidlamlilo / The Fire Eater offers a critical and unflinching look at the eddying cycles of violence and revenge that play out across generations. Yet it is most of all a story about regeneration and redemption that speaks to both the country’s haunted past and its present-day complexities.
Isidlamlilo / The Fire Eater will appeal to teachers, high school learners, and tertiary students in theatre, drama and English studies.

A beautiful first collection of poems by two-time Kate Greenaway
Medal-winner Shirley Hughes. In this wonderful collection of poems,
by best-loved and Kate Greenaway Medal-winner, Shirley Hughes,
Katie and her little brother Olly go out and about, romping through
the changing seasons. They take pleasure in the different elements
and weather conditions - sunshine, wind, rain, mist and even snow.
From the joys of the seaside to the miseries of the sickbed, this
exuberant volume captures to perfection the world of childhood.
This volume explores the relationship between the emphasis on
performance in Elizabethan humanist education and the flourishing
of literary brilliance around the turn of the sixteenth century.
This study asks us what lessons we can learn today from
Shakespeare's Latin grammar school. What were the cognitive
benefits of an education so deeply rooted in what Demosthenes and
Quintilian called "actio"-acting? Because of the vast difference
between educational practice then and now, we have not often
followed one essential thread: the focus on performance. This study
examines the connections relevant to the education offered in
schools today. This book will be of great interest to teachers,
scholars, and administrators in performing arts and education.
This book compares the theatrical cultures of early modern England
and Spain and explores the causes and consequences not just of the
remarkable similarities but also of the visible differences between
them. An exercise in multi-focal theatre history research, it
deploys a wide range of perspectives and evidence with which to
recreate the theatrical landscapes of these two countries and thus
better understand how the specific conditions of performance
actively contributed to the development of each country's dramatic
literature. This monograph develops an innovative comparative
framework within which to explore the numerous similarities, as
well as the notable differences, between early modern Europe's two
most prominent commercial theatre cultures. By highlighting the
nuances and intricacies that make each theatrical culture unique
while never losing sight of the fact that the two belong to the
same broader cultural ecosystem, its dual focus should appeal to
scholars and students of English and Spanish literature alike, as
well as those interested in the broader history of European
theatre. Learning from what one 'playground' - that is, the
environment and circumstances out of which a dramatic tradition
originates - reveals about the other will help solve not only the
questions posed above but also others that still await examination.
This investigation will be of great interest to students and
scholars in theatre history, comparative drama, early modern drama,
and performance culture.
From two of the biggest names in children's publishing, this is an
inspiring guide to wordplay for young readers, their parents and
teachers. I'm ready for spaghetti Will you getti the spaghetti?
Don't say, "Not yetti spaghetti!" 'cos I'm all setti for spaghetti.
Fizzing with rhythm, energy and laughter, the 30 poems in Ready for
Spaghetti delight in the details of children's daily routines. "Up,
up, uppity-up!", the first poem announces, while the artwork shows
a child leaping out of bed, ready to begin their morning; "Hush and
a hush, soft and low", chants the final poem, as children snuggle
under their blankets after their day's adventures. Full of
affectionate observations of young children, which are beautifully
continued in Polly Dunbar's warm-hearted pictures, Michael Rosen's
poems are ideal for reading aloud with toddlers ... and many
grown-ups will soon know them by heart!
