"Everybody wants to become old, but nobody wants to be old." or "The main problem of old people is, they don't feel attractive any longer - we have to write and to photograph against this feeling." Anja Muller finds the right way to show with her pictures how erotic and how attractive people over sixty are. Just show it, don't hide it.
"Clarke teaches us to think about how this art was understood and felt by those who lived with it in their daily lives and he speculates that it might even reflect what the Romans actually did. This is the first genuinely contextual and theoretically informed study we have of a vast panoply of classical art about sex. It will be an illuminating book for classicists, historians, and anybody else who finds lovemaking interesting."--Thomas Laqueur, author of "Making Sex "There are few scholars as able to take on this material, as well versed in theories of sexuality, and as comfortable dealing with both heterosexual and homoerotic content as Clarke. The topic is timely and the execution is professional."--Natalie Kampen, Barnard College "This book should attract not only classicists, but also scholars of sexuality in any field. Clarke succeeds both in introducing little-known material and in defamiliarizing the familiar examples of erotic art."--Anthony Corbeill, University of Kansas ""Looking at Lovemaking proves that the ancients were very different from you and me--that they saw sex not primarily as procreation and never as sin but rather as sport, art, and pleasure, an activity full of humor, tenderness and above all variety. John R. Clarke, by looking at Roman artifacts from several centuries destined to be used by different social classes, reveals that the erotic "visual record is far more varied, open-minded and playful than are "written moral strictures, which were narrowly formulated by the elite and for the elite. This book is at once discreet and bold--discreetly respectful of nuance and context, boldly clear in drawing the widest possible conclusions about themalleability of human behavior. Clarke has, with meticulous scholarship and a fresh approach, vindicated Foucault's revolutionary claims for the social construction of sexuality."--Edmund White, author of "The Beautiful Room is Empty
Religion and sex, body and soul, sacred and profane: In "Closet
Devotions," Richard Rambuss traces the relays between these
cultural formations by examining the issue of "sacred eroticism,"
the literary or artistic expression of devotional feelings in
erotic terms that has repeatedly occurred over the centuries.
Rather than dismissing such expression as mere convention, Rambuss
takes it seriously as a form of erotic discourse, one that gives
voice to desires that, outside the sphere of sacred rapture, would
otherwise be deemed taboo.

How else would they surrender their bodily secrets to him, confident to be up-close to his camera lens? It's the thrilling combination of shapely physical landscapes and hot close-ups that make every page of this diverse book of erotic photographs a continual sensual pleasure, full of surprises.
Text in English & German. In erotic photography, nylon stockings are probably the most tantalisingly suggestive of all accessories. Being sort of transparent, nylon tends to cover up more than it reveals. Stockings that stay up by themselves, or fish-net stockings complete with garter belt give any nude shot an additional provocative touch, something fans of exciting erotic photography know and value. Some 30 famous and well-known masters of erotic photography have contributed their uniquely personal interpretations of the subject in fascinating colour and black-and-white photographs. The volume features stylish studio shots and outdoor pictures, and range from romantic soft focus to bordering on fetishism. Most of the pictures have never been published before.
Oliver Rath's photographs range from spontaneous shots to conceptual work. Since 2010 he has been living in Berlin and so "Berlin Boheme" is the title of his first book. The work contains a scintillating display of dynamic, provocative eroticism with a dash of humour. His blog publishes new work every day, showing all the facets of our daily lives, more often than not a little "over the top". As Page 2011, the design magazine puts it: "The photographs look like stills from movie scenes, with carefully organised choreography, props and actors".
Text in English, French & German. German born Frank Waldecker took his first pictures at the age of 12. Later he studied graphic design and worked in this capacity for publishing houses in Hamburg and Munich. In 1989 while visiting Brazil, he fell in love with the country and people. He now lives in Rio de Janeiro four months of the year. Frank has been shooting male models since 2001, and thanks to their natural sensuality, Brazilian models are his favourite subjects. His first calendar Beachboys was published 2003 and since then more than 20 others published internationally featuring his photos. In Brazil Frank works with the best model agencies on fashion shoots and lifestyle photos for a range of clients. Besides postcards, calendars and books, his work has been published in international magazines such as "Cosmopolitan" and "Glamour". As early as 1962, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes had an international hit with the song "The Girl from Ipanema". This paid homage to the sensuality and beauty of Brazilian women, especially those from Ipanema, the legendary area of Rio de Janeiro. Even today, there are more attractive men and women in Ipanema than at any other beach in Brazil. However, while Brazilian women have always had plenty of attention, the male of the species has been neglected by the photographers lens. High time, then, to let the Latin lovers from Brazil into the picture. Between 2001 and 2009 I photographed an incredible variety of men in and around Rio. There, people love to show off their bodies, and work hard to keep them in good shape. Total nudity is, however, taboo in Brazil. People are aware that leaving on the last shred of clothing stimulates the imagination, and has a far more erotic effect than showing off all your assets. Many of my photographs communicate emotion, charm and sensuality, but not only that. They also reveal "alegria" or joy of life, a quality unique to the Brazilians and their way of life.

For over 40 years, David Hurles documented the hidden world of rough trade and rent boys posing, masturbating, wrestling, or boxing. His models ranged from drifters and grifters to hustlers and ex-cons -- men who came to Los Angeles, and Hurles's studio, to make it big but mostly landed in Hollywood's gutter. His photographs were ubiquitous fixtures in gay publications throughout the seventies and eighties and continue to enjoy a strong following today. More Weegee than Weber, these images vibrate with youthful male power and edgy sexuality. Chosen from Hurles's vast archive by noted homoerotic artist Rex, they comprise an amazing photographic history of a sexuality that society has rarely acknowledged.
The list of artists who had major influence on the gay movement is rather short, since the movement itself is just a few decades old. But without a doubt Tom of Finland has to be included, the man whose amazing drawings tell us everything about love, lust and life of those hunks who have a good heart and live a simple life. Tom of Finland - Life and Work of a Gay Hero is a detailed anthology which is dedicated to his body of work from its early beginnings to the last years. With many drawings, a lot of photos and an extensive biography it gives you a portrait of this unique artist, which is as many-sided and life-embracing as the artist himself.
Within a few years, inkedKenny (born 1967) developed into one of the most successful photographers of gay culture. His stylized photography shows a desirous view on the beauty of an idealized men's world. After numerous publications in anthologies such as TurnOn: Sneax, Hair, or Raunch, this is his first monography.
The French porn studio Citebeur is famous for its macho movies with Arabs and Latinos playing the leads. This volume spotlights the genre of nude photography, presenting for the first time 220 original pictures on the theme from the photography collection of the Munich City Museum, spanning the years from 1845 to 2005. In the course of six chapters, "Nude Visions" recounts a cultural history of nude photography. Masters from the respective periods are brought together here--starting with photographs from the early nineteenth century inspired by sculpted and painted images. This period is followed by the symbolist art of the fin de siecle, in which the nude becomes a mirror of psychic moods. Naturist images come next, segueing into the heroic physical ideal of National Socialism, the dream of the femme fatale, or the Orient as a motif for displaying nakedness. Finally, we are treated to the abstract and surrealist experiments of the twentieth century, accompanied by diverse scenarios in which the undressed body is shown in fashion and lifestyle photography. The male nude is also explored as an expression of homoerotic emancipation in imagery. Featured photographers include: Auguste Bellocq, Guy Bourdin, Josef Breitenbach, Francis Bruguiere, Frantisek Drtikol, Frank Eugene, Gertrude Fehr, Andre Gelpke, Heinz Hajek-Halke, Franz Hanfstaengl, Fritz Henle, Martha Hoepffner, Louis Igout, Andre Kertesz, Germaine Krull, Lehnert & Landrock, Helmut Lederer, Cheyco Leidman, Herbert List, Manasse, Guglielmo Marconi, Will McBride, Pierre Molinier, Eadweard Muybridge, Serge Nazarieff, Floris M. Neususs, Helmut Newton, Dennis Oppenheim, Guglielmo Pluschow, Franz Roh, Otto Steinert, Bert Stern, Alfred Stieglitz, Sasha Stone, Juergen Teller, Wilhelm von Gloeden, Gerhard Vormwald, and Edward Weston. |
