Economic and Social Cohesion in Europe - A New Objective (Hardcover, New): Achille Hannequart Economic and Social Cohesion in Europe - A New Objective (Hardcover, New)
Achille Hannequart
R2,698 Discovery Miles 26 980 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

With discussions of a full internal market within the EC finally reaching fruition, and regular intergovernmental talks advancing the ideas of economic, monetary and perhaps eventually political union, economic and social cohesion has become a major objective of Community policy. Regional disparities remain a hard fact of Community life. Although there has been money available since 1975 to promote regional development and training in the poorer parts of Europe, it is likely that without serious reform of the Structural Funds these disparities could accelerate. There has been increasing anxiety from these countries about their ability to survive in the single market - anxiety that may jeopardize their participation in the Community effort. The EC has therefore committed itself to new initiatives in science and technology, the environment, social policy and economic and social cohesion. This book studies how the new policy can best be designed, exploring ways in which Structural Funds can be implemented to provide new opportunities for the poorer member states. This book should be of interest to undergraduates, postgraduates and researchers of European studies, economics, politics a

European Communities' Health and Safety Legislation (Paperback, And And): A.C. Neal, F.B Wright European Communities' Health and Safety Legislation (Paperback, And And)
A.C. Neal, F.B Wright
R5,635 Discovery Miles 56 350 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

As the Single Market of 1992 comes into being, the need to develop an effective "social dimension" for that market has been acknowledged as a matter of pressing concern. Of the numerous initiatives already embarked upon by the European Commission in the context of that "social dimension", one of the most fundamental is the programme of measures designed to safeguard the health and safety of workers at their places of work. This volume presents the background to the programme of European Community initiatives, tracing the origins of a European policy on occupational health and safety and looking at the progressively expanding ambitions of Commission Action Programmes in this field. This brings the picture up to date to the measures adopted within the framework of the Community Charter of Fundamental Social Rights of Workers and includes consideration of the "Framework Directives" 80/1107/EEC and 89/391/EEC. Full texts of the relevant instruments making up the European Communities' Health and Safety Legislation are included in this work.

The European Banking Union and the Role of Law (Hardcover): Gianni Lo Schiavo The European Banking Union and the Role of Law (Hardcover)
Gianni Lo Schiavo
R3,540 Discovery Miles 35 400 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The European Banking Union and the Role of Law offers a comprehensive and unique examination of the European Banking Union's (EBU) impact on existing legal disciplines and assesses the role of law in shaping the EBU framework. With expert contributions from academics, practitioners and EU officials, this thought-provoking book provides different perspectives on the Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM) and the Single Resolution Mechanism (SRM). Evaluating and proposing original interpretations on the EBU at a key stage of its development in the European Union, this book assesses topical issues relating to the institutional and administrative rules of the EBU, the interpretation and application of banking law, supervision and resolution frameworks, judicial rules and protection in the EBU. The book is structured into three parts: a general overview of the EBU framework and specific reflections on both the SSM and the SRM. The contributions show that the EBU is a successful European integration project, yet challenges still lie ahead. This topical and engaging book will be an important resource for practitioners, and public servants in the financial sector. Academics and students of financial law and European law will also find this book a valuable read. Contributors include: K. Alexander, G. Barrett, M.P. Chiti, A. de Gregorio Merino, D. Fromage, P. Fucile, S. Gleeson, R. Ibrido, G. Lo Schiavo, A. Miglionico, C.A. Petit, P. Schammo, M. Schillig, R. Smits, N. Xanthoulis

Paul A. Shotton, Paul G. Nixon
R3,995 Discovery Miles 39 950 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Unique in bringing together contributions from academics and practitioners on the theme of strategic, intelligent modern lobbying this book provides a thorough and accessible discussion on key ideas pertinent to the pursuance of public affairs in the European Union. Combining innovative academic research with first-hand professional experience it offers the reader a combination of practical recommendations, case studies and academic theory to add new insights to interest group research and lobbying strategies. While focusing on the European Union the contributors acknowledge the multi-level dimension of EU decision-making and incorporate research on multi-level governance as well as lobbying by sub-national authorities. Through this they present a fuller picture of a subject that should appeal to students, academics and practitioners alike.

Interregionalism and the European Union - A Post-Revisionist Approach to Europe's Place in a Changing World (Hardcover,... Interregionalism and the European Union - A Post-Revisionist Approach to Europe's Place in a Changing World (Hardcover, New Ed)
Mario Telo, Louise Fawcett, Frederik Ponjaert
R4,331 Discovery Miles 43 310 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Is the EU isolated within the emergent multipolar world? Concentrating on interregional relations and focussing on the European Union's (EU) evolving international role with regards to regional cooperation, this innovative book collects a set of fresh empirical analyses of interregional ties binding the EU with its Eastern and Southern neighbourhood, as well as with Asia, Africa and the Americas. The 25 leading authors from 5 continents have contributed original and diverse chapters and the book advances a novel theoretical 'post-revisionist' approach beyond both the Eurocentrism of 'Europe First' perspectives as well as the Euroscepticism of those advocating to simply move 'Beyond Europe'. After a Foreword by A. Acharya, the book's five sections reflect the main drivers of EU interregional policies: The European Union as a Sophisticated Laboratory of Regional and Interregional Cooperation (with chapters by M. Telo, L. Fawcett and T. Risse), De Facto Drivers of Regionalism (F. Ponjaert, M. Shu, A. Valladao and C. Jakobeit), De Jure Drivers of Regionalism (S. Lavenex, G. Finizio, C. Jakobeit, R. Coman, C. Cocq & S. Teo L-Shah), Cognitive Drivers of Regionalism (J. Ruland, E. Fitriani, S. Stavridis & S. Kingah, P. Bacon), and Instrumental Drivers of Regionalism (B. Delcourt, C. Olsson & G. Muller, A. Malamud & P. Seabra and L. Fioramonti & J. Kostopoulos).

The Single European Market and Beyond - A Study of the Wider Implications of the Single European Act (Paperback, New):... The Single European Market and Beyond - A Study of the Wider Implications of the Single European Act (Paperback, New)
Professor Dennis Swann
R1,475 R535 Discovery Miles 5 350 Save R940 (64%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In recent years we have become obsessed with being "ready for 1992". Yet despite the hype, how many people understand what "1992 and all that" will actually entail? "The Single European Market and Beyond" offers a detailed account of both the practicalities involved and the principles behind them. It falls into four parts. Part I serves as an introduction to the subject and provides an overview. It examines the Single European Act (1986) - which set the 31st December 1992 deadline - in some detail. Dennis Swann argues that the 1986 Act is best understood in terms of three ideas: completing, deepening and widening the Community. Part II examines the completion of the market in terms of the 1986 Act while Part III is concerned with the deepening and widening of particular aspects of the Act. It focuses on issues such as European Monetary Union, the Social Charter, Environmental Policy and political union. Widening also takes account of the countries now considering or actively seeking full membership - including the Eastern European countries. Finally, in Part IV, readers are given a series of final thoughts on the three issues most likely to shape Europe's future. This book should b

Theorising the European Union as an International Security Provider (Hardcover): Richard Whitman, Stefan Wolff, Annemarie Peen... Theorising the European Union as an International Security Provider (Hardcover)
Richard Whitman, Stefan Wolff, Annemarie Peen Dodt
R4,133 Discovery Miles 41 330 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The European Union has increasingly taken on a role as international security provider that extends beyond the geographical scope of its membership. This is clear from the wide range of military and civilian crisis management missions that the Union has undertaken, but also identifiable through its other policies, such as the European Neighbourhood Policy and development assistance, which have also to some extent become security focused. Yet, the role of the EU as an international security provider remains under-theorized and weakly understood. The proposed book analyses the Union's role as an international security provider in a comprehensive way developing theoretical as well as empirical grounding for the understanding of the making and implementation of EU security policy. The contributions in this book cover actors involved in the policy making process, the dynamics of this process itself, its outcomes (strategies and policies) and their impact on the ground. They examine the relevance of, and apply, existing theories of international relations, international security and foreign policy analysis to the specific case of the EU, investigate empirically how particular policies are formulated and implemented, and study the impact and effectiveness of the Union as an international security provider in a variety of cases compared. This book was previously published as a special issue of Global Society.

Legislative Codecision in the European Union - Experience over Twenty Years and Implications (Paperback): Anne Rasmussen Legislative Codecision in the European Union - Experience over Twenty Years and Implications (Paperback)
Anne Rasmussen
R1,281 Discovery Miles 12 810 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume takes stock of twenty years of practising and studying codecision in the European Union (EU) and examines the procedure's long-term implications for the EU's institutions, politics and policies. The introduction of co-legislation between the Council of Ministers and the European Parliament in 1993 raised the prospect of increased parliamentary involvement in EU decision-making and promised a new era of more transparent, inclusive and accountable policy-making. This collection draws together contributions from diverse theoretical and methodological perspectives in order to analyse the extent to which codecision has delivered the expected gains and to review the unexpected effects that have followed from its introduction, such as the growing informalisation of EU decision-making. Using a combination of in-depth qualitative case studies, wider quantitative analyses, practitioners' insights and a review of the procedure's democratic legitimacy the contributions offer a holistic assessment of the effect of co-decision on the political system of the EU. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of European Public Policy.

New Contractualism in European Welfare State Policies (Hardcover, New Ed): Rune Ervik, Nanna Kildal New Contractualism in European Welfare State Policies (Hardcover, New Ed)
Rune Ervik, Nanna Kildal
R3,995 Discovery Miles 39 950 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The 'Golden Age' of the welfare state in Europe was characterised by a strengthening of social rights as citizens became increasingly protected through the collective provision of income security and social services. The oil crisis, inflation and high unemployment of the 1970s largely saw the end of welfare expansion with critical voices claiming the welfare state had created an unbalanced focus on the social rights of individuals, above their responsibilities as citizens. During the 1980s many western countries developed contractual modes of thinking and regulation within welfare policy. Contractualism has proved a significant organising principle for public reforms in general, and for social policy reforms in particular as it embraces both a way of justifying certain welfare policies and of constructing specific socio-legal policy instruments. Engaging with both the critique of the welfare state and the subsequent policy responses, expert contributors in this book examine contractualism as a discourse, comprising principles and justifying ideas, and as a legal and social practice. Covering the international debate on conditionality they discuss European experiences with active social citizenship ideas and contractualism providing individual case studies and comparisons from a wide range of European countries.

The European Union and the Use of Military Force - Uncovering the myths (Hardcover, New Ed): Tommi Koivula The European Union and the Use of Military Force - Uncovering the myths (Hardcover, New Ed)
Tommi Koivula
R4,432 Discovery Miles 44 320 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Koivula examines the discursive space related to the use of military force by the European Union (EU). By examining the EU's relationship to its use of military force during the course of its history and by demonstrating that the contemporary discursive space of the EU military dimension is incoherent in nature and contains inherent contradictions, he seeks to answer the related question of whether extreme forms of military enforcement, for example killing, is appropriate for the EU.

Translating Institutions - An Ethnographic Study of EU Translation (Hardcover): Kaisa Koskinen Translating Institutions - An Ethnographic Study of EU Translation (Hardcover)
Kaisa Koskinen
R4,134 Discovery Miles 41 340 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Translating Institutions outlines a framework for research on translation in institutional settings, using the Finnish translation unit at the European Commission as a case study. Because of their foundational multilingualism, the institutions of the European Union could be described as both translating and translated institutions. The European Commission alone employs nearly two thousand translators, and it is translators who draft the vast majority of outgoing EU messages. Translating Institutions sets out to explore the organizational role and professional identity of this group of cultural mediators, a group that has remained relatively invisible despite its size and central institutional role, and to use the analysis of this data to elaborate broader methodological and theoretical issues. Translating Institutions adopts an ethnographic approach to explore the life and work of the translators at the centre of this study. In practice, this entails employing a number of different methods and interrogating various types of data. The three-level research design used covers the study of the institutional framework, the study of translators working in specific institutional settings, and the study of translated documents and their source texts. This is therefore a study of both texts and people in their institutional habitat. Given the methodological focus of the volume, the different methods and data are outlined in independent chapters: the institutional framework of translation (institutional ethnography), the physical location of the unit (observation), translators' own views of their role (focus group discussions), and a sociologically-oriented text analysis of a sample document (shifts analysis). Translating Institutions constitutes a valuable contribution to the sociology of translation. It opens up new avenues for research and offers a detailed framework for the study of institutional translation.

The Czech Republic and the European Union (Paperback): Dan Marek, Michael Baun The Czech Republic and the European Union (Paperback)
Dan Marek, Michael Baun
R1,412 Discovery Miles 14 120 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book examines the relationship between the Czech Republic and the European Union (EU). The authors examine the Czech Republic's road to EU membership in 2004 and assess how EU accession has affected or changed the Czech Republic, including its domestic politics, governing institutions and public policies. It also examines how the Czech Republic has behaved as an EU member state, addressing the questions: What are the Czech Republic's interests in the EU and how has it sought to influence EU policymaking? How have Czech interests and behaviour been shaped by the country's position as: a new member state; a small member state; a relatively poor member state; and a post-communist member state? The book also addresses the Czech Republic's preparations for assuming the EU presidency in January 2009, and evaluates the actual conduct of the presidency. Although a case study of a single member state, this book sheds light on a number of broader points or issues pertaining to the EU and its member states. It contributes to academic debate and knowledge about the EU and European integration, including the debates on Europeanization and the role of small states in the EU. This book will of interest to students and scholars of the European Union, European politics and Post-Communist politics.

Transitions From Dictatorship To Democracy - Comparative Studies Of Spain, Portugal And Greece (Hardcover): Ronald H. Chilcote,... Transitions From Dictatorship To Democracy - Comparative Studies Of Spain, Portugal And Greece (Hardcover)
Ronald H. Chilcote, Stylianos Hadjiyannis, Fred A III Lopez, Daniel Nataf, Elizabeth Sammis
R4,485 Discovery Miles 44 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

First published in 1991. In the late 1970s, Nicos Poulantzas, in Crisis of the Dictatorships: Portugal, Spain, Greece, applied his well-known theoretical perspectives to a concrete analysis of the major transformations that occurred in those three countries during 1974 and 1975. His provocative and interpretative analysis not only provided a basis for comparative study but also examined several important theoretical questions about transition from dictatorship to representative democracy and on to socialism. The present essays offer a retrospective assessment of this transition and examine current developments with particular attention to the role of the state and social classes in the overthrow of the old dictatorships, the evolution of representative democracy and political parties, and the formal integration of these countries into the European Eco nomic Community and the international capitalist system.

Political Representation in the European Union - Still democratic in times of crisis? (Paperback): Sandra Kroeger Political Representation in the European Union - Still democratic in times of crisis? (Paperback)
Sandra Kroeger
R1,412 Discovery Miles 14 120 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In recent years the financial and economic crisis of 2008-9 has progressed into an equally important political and democratic crisis of the EU. These troubled times have set the framework to re-assess a number of important questions in regard to representative democracy in the EU, such as the normative foundation of political representation, the institutional relationship between representatives and represented, the link between democracy and representation and new arenas and actors. This book examines the diverse avenues through which different sorts of actors have expressed their voices during the Euro crisis and how their various interests are translated into the decision-making process. It offers a state-of- the-art assessment of what political representation means in this context as well as a contribution to the 'representative turn' in democratic theory. The authors address three key themes: * The main actors and channels of political representation in the EU. * Interlocking levels of representation in the EU and the way in which national and supranational representation works. * How the European institutional system represents EU citizens through law and administration. Focusing on the importance of representation in the legitimation of democracy, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of European Union politics, European studies, democratic theory, representation studies, civil society and transnational democracy.

The Legal Order of the European Union - The Institutional Role of the Court of Justice (Paperback): Timothy Moorhead The Legal Order of the European Union - The Institutional Role of the Court of Justice (Paperback)
Timothy Moorhead
R1,401 Discovery Miles 14 010 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The objective of European integration serves as an ideal of the legal order of the European Union and invites reconsideration of law's conceptual features. This book critically assesses the legal order of the European Union, focusing on the operative aspects of the Union constitution with particular reference to the institutional practices of the Court of Justice in expressing the values underlying this constitution. Drawing together positivist and non-positivist accounts within an institutional understanding of law, Timothy Moorhead breaks new ground in applying a range of analytic jurisprudential perspectives to the Union legal order, and in employing the theoretical resources provided by the Union to model a revised conceptual viewpoint concerning legal order generally. In offering this conceptual approach, Moorhead emphasises the flexibility inherent in law's institutional character as the basis for a theoretical rationalisation of the Union legal order. This book will be of great use and interest to scholars and students of European Union Law, Jurisprudence and European Constitutionalism.

Flexible Europe - Differentiated Integration, Fairness, and Democracy (Hardcover): Richard Bellamy, Sandra Kroeger, Marta... Flexible Europe - Differentiated Integration, Fairness, and Democracy (Hardcover)
Richard Bellamy, Sandra Kroeger, Marta Lorimer
R1,316 Discovery Miles 13 160 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The European Union (EU) is often portrayed as sacrificing national diversity for European unity. This book explores the alternative of a flexible EU based on differentiated rather than uniform integration. The authors combine normative theory with empirical research on political party actors to assess the desirability and political acceptability of differentiated integration as a means of accommodating heterogeneity in the EU. They examine the circumstances and institutional design needed for flexibility to promote rather than undermine fairness and democracy within and between member states. Clear, balanced, and accessible, the book provides fresh thinking on the future of the EU.

Core-periphery Relations in the European Union - Power and Conflict in a Dualist Political Economy (Hardcover): Jose Magone,... Core-periphery Relations in the European Union - Power and Conflict in a Dualist Political Economy (Hardcover)
Jose Magone, Brigid Laffan, Christian Schweiger
R4,609 Discovery Miles 46 090 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Successive Enlargements to the European Union membership have transformed it into an economically, politically and culturally heterogeneous body with distinct vulnerabilities in its multi-level governance. This book analyses core-periphery relations to highlight the growing cleavage, and potential conflict, between the core and peripheral member-states of the Union in the face of the devastating consequences of Eurozone crisis. Taking a comparative and theoretical approach and using a variety of case studies, it examines how the crisis has both exacerbated tensions in centre-periphery relations within and outside the Eurozone, and how the European Union's economic and political status is declining globally. This text will be of key interest to students and scholars of European Union studies, European integration, political economy, public policy, and comparative politics.

EU Security Policy and Crisis Management - A Quest for Coherence (Hardcover): Nicole Koenig EU Security Policy and Crisis Management - A Quest for Coherence (Hardcover)
Nicole Koenig
R4,438 Discovery Miles 44 380 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book explores European Union crisis management and draws implications for its role as an international security actor. The success of EU crisis management has varied greatly and this book aims to identify the key factors that explain the differing degrees of coherence through a comparative analysis of its multidimensional crisis responses in Africa. The empirical focus lies on three prominent EU crisis management cases, namely Libya in 2011, Somalia in 2011-2012, and the Sahel in 2012-2013. It analyses the activities and interaction of EU institutional actors and member states, with a focus on France, the United Kingdom, and Germany. The book argues that the EU represents a rather unpredictable security actor, whose multi-level coherence is contingent on the congruence of domestic economic and electoral interests, as well as national threat perceptions, and the extent to which EU-level coherence norms resonate with national norms on the use of force and modes of multilateral cooperation. In sum, this book offers systematic insight into EU crisis management and clarifies the conceptual and empirical boundaries of the comprehensive approach. Finally, the study of the micro-foundations of coherence allows for policy-relevant suggestions on the EU's future role as a security actor. This book will be of much interest to students of EU policy, European Security, Peace and Conflict Studies, African Politics and IR in general.

The European Union and Japan - A New Chapter in Civilian Power Cooperation? (Hardcover, New Ed): Paul Bacon, Hartmut Mayer,... The European Union and Japan - A New Chapter in Civilian Power Cooperation? (Hardcover, New Ed)
Paul Bacon, Hartmut Mayer, Hidetoshi Nakamura
R4,006 Discovery Miles 40 060 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The EU and Japan have one of the most important trade relationships in the world. Fittingly, this book presents a detailed analysis of their bilateral regulatory environment and negotiation processes. Moreover, the two polities have also co-operated extensively in bilateral and multilateral contexts on a range of global governance issues. Nevertheless, the relationship is widely acknowledged to have significant untapped potential. Deploying the concept of civilian power, the book takes a fresh, honest and provocative look at this important relationship, in a post-Fukushima, post-sovereign debt crisis world. First the book analyses the place of EU-Japan relations within the worldviews of the Japanese and European bodies politic. Subsequently, three thematic sections evaluate their cooperation on such issues as trade, energy security, environmental politics, development, human rights, post-conflict reconstruction, health and biosecurity. The eminent scholars of the EU-Japan relationship gathered in this book offer informed, empirically rich and policy-relevant insights into the present and future prospects for the relationship.

Michael Burgess
R2,949 Discovery Miles 29 490 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

One of the most frequent criticisms levelled at the European Community is the discrepancy between federalist rhetoric and the intergovernmental response: between its ideological aspirations and contemporary political reality. The federalist heritage of the European Community has become discredited by contemporary political thinkers, and yet it still forms an important part of the community's ideological foundations. Within this book the contrasting theories of Spinelli and Monnet are subjected to rigorous criticism, examining the benefits and pitfalls of their proposals for a unified Europe, and the probability of the gap between theory and actuality ever being bridged in the future.

The Domestic Structure of European Community Policy-Making in West Germany (Routledge Revivals) (Hardcover): Simon Bulmer The Domestic Structure of European Community Policy-Making in West Germany (Routledge Revivals) (Hardcover)
Simon Bulmer
R5,491 Discovery Miles 54 910 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Federal Republic of Germany's position in the European Community had been described as one of interdependence, penetration and integration. Of the three terms this research addresses itself most directly to penetration: to the links between the German political system and policy-making at the Community level. These links operated in two directions. Thus membership for the European Community (EC) imposed certain constraints on German domestic policy-making. Although this research, first published in 1986, concentrates on the structural inter-relationship between the German political system and EC decisions, its main focus of attention is the articulation of German 'interests' in the EC policy process. This book will be of interest to students of politics and history.

The Institutional Framework of the European Communities (Paperback, Revised): J.S. Davidson, D. A. C. Freeston The Institutional Framework of the European Communities (Paperback, Revised)
J.S. Davidson, D. A. C. Freeston
R1,292 Discovery Miles 12 920 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

After more than a decade of British membership of the European Community, there is still a widespread lack of appreciation of what goes on within the Community institutions, and of its significance for UK political and legal processes. This book aims to provide a concise introduction to the institutions and law-making processes of the Community, and to set them in their proper perspective as part of UK public law. The prime focus is upon the Community institutions and their inter-relations, however, reference is also made as appropriate to the effects which Community decision-making has on Westminster and Whitehall and in the English courts. In particular, the book examines the sources of Community law, the organization and composition of the main institutions after the accession of Portugal and Spain, and the decision-making processes involved in the enactment of the Community's legislation. There are also chapters on the budgetary process and on the role of the European Court of Justice. Despite the UK emphasis some comparative material is used to put the UK approach into perspective.
