'What will we find in the uncut grass?'
'It depends on what we’re looking for.'
From Trevor Noah, the author of the #1 bestselling memoir Born a Crime,
comes a gorgeously illustrated fable in the tradition of The Boy, the
Mole, the Fox and the Horse about a young child’s journey into the
world beyond the shadow of home, a magical landscape where he discovers
the secrets of solidarity, connection, and finding peace with the
people we love.
Infused with Trevor’s signature wit and imagination, in collaboration
with visionary artist Sabina Hahn, it's a tale for readers of all ages
– to be read aloud or read alone.
In The Truth About Cape Slavery, Patric Tariq Mellet argues that modern South Africa – its economy and politics – is shaped and established on the foundation of chattel slavery just like the United States of America.
Cape slavery, rather than minor, was a crucial feature of maritime capitalism. This then moved to become the cornerstone of the Cape’s agricultural economy.
On 10 June 1980, during a seemingly endless day of bloody fighting, 13
men of the South African Defence Force died and several more were
wounded after 61 Mechanised Infantry Battalion Group attacked a vast
complex of Swapo military bases in Angola.
During Operation Sceptic second lieutenant Paul Louw led his platoon in
four Ratel infantry fighting vehicles to a battleground called
Smokeshell. In the ensuing chaos of that day 12 national servicemen of
his platoon of 44 were killed and he himself was wounded. In a separate
incident during the fighting his company second-in-command was also
slain. One of his troops, 18-year-old HP Ferreira, was shot through the
pelvis by a 14,5 mm anti-aircraft round and also hit by AK-47 bullets.
Louw spent the night drenched in the blood and guts of his men,
hunkered down with a handful of other survivors in a Ratel destroyed by
an RPG 7 rocket, isolated from the rest of the South African attack
force.
Blood Brothers records the dramatic events that took place in Angola
that day, in the words of the survivors of the battle. It investigates
the human cost of war after the last shots have been fired and follows
the veterans as they return to the battleground four decades later in
search of peace.
She is the very thing he’s spent his whole life hunting. He is the very thing she’s spent her whole life pretending to be.
Only the extraordinary belong in the kingdom of Ilya—the exceptional, the empowered, the Elites.
The powers these Elites have possessed for decades were graciously gifted to them by the Plague, though not all were fortunate enough to both survive the sickness and reap the reward. Those born Ordinary are just that—ordinary. And when the king decreed that all Ordinaries be banished in order to preserve his Elite society, lacking an ability suddenly became a crime—making Paedyn Gray a felon by fate and a thief by necessity.
Surviving in the slums as an Ordinary is no simple task, and Paedyn knows this better than most. Having been trained by her father to be overly observant since she was a child, Paedyn poses as a Psychic in the crowded city, blending in with the Elites as best she can in order to stay alive and out of trouble. Easier said than done.
When Paeydn unsuspectingly saves one of Ilyas princes, she finds herself thrown into the Purging Trials. The brutal competition exists to showcase the Elites’ powers—the very thing Paedyn lacks. If the Trials and the opponents within them don’t kill her, the prince she’s fighting feelings for certainly will if he discovers what she is—completely Ordinary.
‘You only need to win a game by one point.’ – Jacques Nienaber after
South Africa’s tournament opener against Scotland in the 2023 Rugby
World Cup.
Little did the coach know that it would take three one-point games to
propel the Springboks into the history books as four-time winners of
the Webb Ellis Cup.
In 2017 the Boks looked punch-drunk as Jacques Nienaber and Rassie
Erasmus watched them being overpowered by Ireland. The following year,
the coaching duo took up the reins little more than 18 months before
the 2019 RWC in Japan. And so began a journey that was to end in
victory in the Stade de France six years later.
Twice the Glory goes deep inside the Bok story of that historic era.
Filled with drama, cheers and tears, it will have you on the edge of
your seat as you relive each nail-biting moment. It’s all here: the
Covid disruption, Siya Kolisi’s rise to the captaincy, Rassie in hot
water over that video, injury blows and the emergence of new talent as
they head off to France. The book also includes penetrating analysis
and insights from the self-effacing Nienaber into how this team became
the finest the world has seen.
A recurring theme is the friendship between Jacques and Rassie that
goes all the way back to their university days, and why they decided to
come home to South Africa to ‘turn things around’.

The ANC has ruled South Africa for three decades during which time the country has gone from the promise of the Rainbow Nation to disfunction and despair. In The Super Cadres, bestselling author Pieter du Toit examines this legacy from the early halcyon days through to the disappointment of the Ramaphosa presidency.
Du Toit asks key questions before coming to a critical observation and a damning conclusion:
- What was the state of the ANC when it took power?
- Was ANC failure inevitable? Did they inherit a country so stricken by apartheid that success was impossible?
- When did the first signs of misrule and corruption occur?
- How did each of the presidencies perform, from Mandela to Ramaphosa? What role did each play in the road to failure?
- What was President Cyril Ramaphosa doing to stop state capture while he was deputy president?
Du Toit concludes that at the very centre of ANC – and thus state - failure is ‘cadre deployment’ which the ANC adopted as official party policy under President Thabo Mbeki. He shows how, over time, the appointment of cadres at every level of government inevitably led to the (con)fusion of party and state, the spread of incompetence, and the dire corruption that ate into every part of the country once Jacob Zuma took over.

vreeslike dinge gebeur inderdaad. Dit is Harry se tweede jaar op
Hogwarts en nuwe probleme wag op hom. Hy hoor vreemde fluisterstemme
deur leë gange – en dan begin die aanvalle . . .
Hulle was heeltemal afgesny

Actor and musician Ian Roberts is something of a South African icon,
renowned for his roles as the rugged Boer fighter Sloet Steenkamp in
the TV series Arende and as Boet in the immortal and immensely popular
Castrol advertisements. In Free Spirit he looks back on his long and
illustrious career in which he became known for having a flair for
languages and acting from the gut.
As a boy, young Ian ran wild on his family’s citrus farm in the Eastern
Cape, preferring the company of the local farm boys (and Kees the
baboon). It was here that he first learnt the art of communicating with
an audience through song and story.
A master storyteller with a wicked sense of humour, Ian offers a highly
entertaining glimpse of how actors make the magic happen, whether on a
theatre stage or before the TV cameras. Drawing on a career that runs
from Long Street to Los Angeles, and from
Shakespeare to Tsotsi, Ian provides a masterclass on the art of acting,
making his life story a vital guide to aspiring actors.
His no-nonsense and fearless approach to life means he has never
hesitated to tackle challenging roles and to do things in his own,
unconventional way. Today, as frontman for Die Radio Kalahari Orkes, he
continues to follow his heart.
Patrick Watson is currently South Africa’s most innovative and versatile landscape architect. Known for designing extensive mega-sites, such as Sun City and an entire Indian Ocean Island, he is also the creator of exquisite small gardens in private homes and quiet spaces for reflection, such as the Apartheid Museum and the Garden of Hope at St George’s Anglican Church in Parktown, Johannesburg.
In all he does, he combines artistic intuition with extensive botanical knowledge and a deep concern for the conservation and restoration of nature. His projects are creative, fresh with inspiration, and often bold, and he uses plants, colours, landforms and space to create visual and emotional experiences.
Covering 23 gardens and landscapes, and richly supported by sensitive photography and some specially commissioned artworks, the book is a beautiful record of a remarkable local talent, a visionary whose art is informed by nature. It recognises and celebrates the combination of knowledge, skill and instinct that make up the man, and the radical influence he has had on his profession.
