China's Commercial Health Insurance (Paperback): China Development Research Foundation China's Commercial Health Insurance (Paperback)
China Development Research Foundation
R1,314 Discovery Miles 13 140 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book examines the financing of China's health system, argues that present arrangements are not adequate and proposes an increased role for commercial health insurance as a way of overcoming the difficulties. Highlighting that China's present social medical insurance system can only cover basic medical services, with the results that many Chinese people with higher income are going abroad for high-quality medical services and that doctors are not bringing in the salaries and obtaining the social status they expect, the book suggests that commercial health insurance offers a possible solution, in that it can help meet the demand of higher-income groups for better healthcare services while at the same time increasing the income of more competent medical professionals. The book goes on to consider the current state of China's commercial insurance industry, outlining the various challenges that the industry needs to overcome if it is to fulfil an increased role, challenges such as greater specialization, increased capacity, structural reform, improved regulation and closer integration with China's medical reform programme.

Cryptocurrency Regulation - A Reflexive Law Approach (Hardcover): Immaculate Dadiso Motsi-Omoijiade Cryptocurrency Regulation - A Reflexive Law Approach (Hardcover)
Immaculate Dadiso Motsi-Omoijiade
R4,136 Discovery Miles 41 360 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This work argues that current cryptocurrency regulation, particularly in the areas of enforcement and compliance, is inadequate. It proposes reflexive regulation as an alternative approach. This book provides strategies for a reflexive regulation approach to cryptocurrencies, developed through the identification of the internal self-regulatory mechanisms of the cryptocurrency system. Apportioning blame for current problems to the regulators' failure to take into account the inherent technical features of cryptocurrencies, the work promotes reflexive regulation in which the law acts at a subsystem-specific level to install, correct, and redefine democratic self-regulatory mechanisms. It provides strategies for this approach, developed through the identification of the internal self-regulatory mechanisms of the cryptocurrency system. These are identified as imbedded in the technical functionality of computer code and consensus-based distributive governance mechanisms respectively. In addition to providing a technical, historical and legal overview of cryptocurrencies, the book concludes by providing recommendations aimed at redirecting code and consensus towards achieving regulatory goals. In this way, it draws from the theory of reflexive law, in order to provide both a substantive and jurisprudential perspective on the regulation of cryptocurrencies and to illustrate how Financial Technology (Fintech) regulation can only be effective once regulators consider both the 'Fin' and the 'tech' in their regulatory approaches. The book will be of interest to researchers, academics and policy-makers working in the areas of Financial Regulation and Jurisprudence, Financial Crime, Banking Regulation, Information Systems, and Information Technology.

The Routledge Companion to Financial Services Marketing (Paperback): Tina Harrison, Hooman Estelami The Routledge Companion to Financial Services Marketing (Paperback)
Tina Harrison, Hooman Estelami
R1,465 Discovery Miles 14 650 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Interest in Financial Services Marketing has grown hugely over the last few decades, particularly since the financial crisis, which scarred the industry and its relationship with customers. It reflects the importance of the financial services industry to the economies of every nation and the realisation that the consumption and marketing of financial services differs from that of tangible goods and indeed many other intangible services. This book is therefore a timely and much needed comprehensive compendium that reflects the development and maturation of the research domain, and pulls together, in a single volume, the current state of thinking and debate. The events associated with the financial crisis have highlighted that there is a need for banks and other financial institutions to understand how to rebuild trust and confidence, improve relationships and derive value from the marketing process. Edited by an international team of experts, this book will provide the latest thinking on how to manage such challenges and will be vital reading for students and lecturers in financial services marketing, policy makers and practitioners.

Green Taxes - Economic Theory and Empirical Evidence from Scandinavia (Hardcover): Runar Brannlund, Ing-Marie Gren Green Taxes - Economic Theory and Empirical Evidence from Scandinavia (Hardcover)
Runar Brannlund, Ing-Marie Gren
R2,906 Discovery Miles 29 060 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The prospect of simultaneously achieving a 'greener' environment, increased tax revenues and lower levels of unemployment has made ecological taxes an increasingly popular proposition. This volume examines the possibility of ecological tax reform in the Nordic countries of Denmark, Norway and Sweden. The potential for ecological tax reform is investigated on a theoretical and an empirical level. The social costs associated with environmental taxes are analysed and the impacts of a Swedish carbon tax are calculated by means of a static numerical model. Taxes on carbon, nitrogen and fertilisers are also examined. The authors find that the level of unemployment cannot be decreased by revenue neutral environmental taxes without any social costs and conclude that there are no easy ways to achieve full employment, a budget surplus and environmental sustainability. They conclude that further understanding of the functioning of the labour market, household decisions and the link between change in pollutant emissions and environmental damage is needed in order to make more concrete suggestions concerning ecological tax reforms. Green Taxes will be of immense use to academics and practitioners in the field of environmental economics.

Supply Chain Cost Management - The AIM and DRIVE Process for Achieving Extraordinary Results (Paperback, Special Ed.): Jimmy... Supply Chain Cost Management - The AIM and DRIVE Process for Achieving Extraordinary Results (Paperback, Special Ed.)
Jimmy Anklesaria
R724 Discovery Miles 7 240 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

For most supply chains, cost reduction is imperative to long-term survival. Yet identifying the costs that can be eliminated--and then doing so effectively--can prove impossible without the right method. This book introduces the same process the author has used to save companies like IBM, Kodak, and DuPont billions of dollars, simply by harnessing the knowledge of suppliers. Using real-life case studies and examples, the book takes readers step-by-step through the process, showing them how to move beyond negotiation and:

- identify critical costs in the supply chain

- measure secondary and tertiary costs

- develop strategic options

- reduce, change, or eliminate activities that produce costs

- implement an action plan

- verify the plan with cost monitors

- continually improve and modify the process

The book gives readers everything they need to implement this powerful system, and bring genuine and permanent savings to their company.

Financing Transportation Networks (Hardcover): David M Levinson Financing Transportation Networks (Hardcover)
David M Levinson
R3,059 Discovery Miles 30 590 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Pollution, alternative fuels, congestion, intelligent transportation systems, and the shift from construction to maintenance all call for a reconsideration of the existing highway revenue mechanisms, especially the gas tax. David Levinson explores the fundamental theoretical basis of highway finance, in particular the use of tolls, and supports that theory with empirical evidence. The author examines highway finance from the perspective of individual jurisdictions and travellers, and considers their interactions rather than specifying a single optimal solution. Congestion pricing has long been a goal of transportation economists, who believe it will result in a more efficient use of resources. Levinson argues that if the governance were to become more decentralized, and collection costs continue to drop, tolls could return to prominence as the preferred means of financing roads for both local and intercity travel. An approach that creates the local winners necessary to implement road pricing is required before it can be expected to become widespread. Economists, civil engineers, planners, students and policymakers will find this detailed examination of transportation networks enlightening and useful.

Detecting Regime Change in Computational Finance - Data Science, Machine Learning and Algorithmic Trading (Paperback): Junchen,... Detecting Regime Change in Computational Finance - Data Science, Machine Learning and Algorithmic Trading (Paperback)
Junchen, Edward P K Tsang
R1,431 Discovery Miles 14 310 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Based on interdisciplinary research into "Directional Change", a new data-driven approach to financial data analysis, Detecting Regime Change in Computational Finance: Data Science, Machine Learning and Algorithmic Trading applies machine learning to financial market monitoring and algorithmic trading. Directional Change is a new way of summarising price changes in the market. Instead of sampling prices at fixed intervals (such as daily closing in time series), it samples prices when the market changes direction ("zigzags"). By sampling data in a different way, this book lays out concepts which enable the extraction of information that other market participants may not be able to see. The book includes a Foreword by Richard Olsen and explores the following topics: Data science: as an alternative to time series, price movements in a market can be summarised as directional changes Machine learning for regime change detection: historical regime changes in a market can be discovered by a Hidden Markov Model Regime characterisation: normal and abnormal regimes in historical data can be characterised using indicators defined under Directional Change Market Monitoring: by using historical characteristics of normal and abnormal regimes, one can monitor the market to detect whether the market regime has changed Algorithmic trading: regime tracking information can help us to design trading algorithms It will be of great interest to researchers in computational finance, machine learning and data science. About the Authors Jun Chen received his PhD in computational finance from the Centre for Computational Finance and Economic Agents, University of Essex in 2019. Edward P K Tsang is an Emeritus Professor at the University of Essex, where he co-founded the Centre for Computational Finance and Economic Agents in 2002.

Banking and Effective Capital Regulation in Practice - A Leadership Perspective (Paperback): Sophia Velez Banking and Effective Capital Regulation in Practice - A Leadership Perspective (Paperback)
Sophia Velez
R1,277 Discovery Miles 12 770 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Due to a historical lack of attention to the importance of modelling, measuring and managing risk, senior bank leaders are struggling to implement unified practices within their financial institutions that could address the gaps posed by risky management behaviour, rogue trading, liquidity crises, prohibited investments in mortgage-backed securities, and default risks aligned with loans. This book discusses the theories at play between bank agents (bank managers) and their principals (shareholders), a topic which has gained importance as a result of the banking crisis, and similarly, governed the need for more efficient risk management and ethical managerial practices. The author worked with a senior bank leadership team to identify and describe effective capital regulation practices that can lead to a reduction in loss and risky management behavioural practices. The book offers consensus on a number of activities that bank managers can implement to address bank risk. It analyses the relevant factors that determine the necessity for banking regulation and the important role of regulation in managing banking crises. The author's analysis of the important regulatory aspects in developed countries such as the US, offers a useful conceptual framework for creating an adequate banking regulatory environment in developing countries. This book offers an original contribution to the field of banking that undergraduate, masters, PhD students, academics and researchers can use to gain a deeper understanding of the constructs at play in the banking industry.

Financial Intelligence for IT Professionals - The Story of the Numbers (Paperback): Julie Bonner Financial Intelligence for IT Professionals - The Story of the Numbers (Paperback)
Julie Bonner
R1,203 Discovery Miles 12 030 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

There are many books written for the accounting and finance community. However, there are very few books written to help the non-financial career professionals who still need to understand the conceptual fundamentals of accounting and finance. In 20 years of teaching this material to non-financial professionals, Dr. Bonner has perfected a teaching approach that works to help the non-financial professional engage with the material to use financial information in leveraging their career without becoming overloaded with information that is not helpful to them. Learning this material takes repetition, application, and building the thinking processes necessary for effectiveness. Many think the challenge with finance is the math, but as this book will demonstrate, it is a conceptual problem. If you understand the conceptual framework, you will understand the math. Dr. Julie Bonner is currently a tenured professor at Central Washington University in the information technology and administrative management department. Her career has spanned business and education for over 30 years. Initially, she received a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting, whereafter she earned an MBA and then a doctorate in organizational leadership.

The Analytics of Risk Model Validation (Hardcover, New): George A. Christodoulakis, Stephen Satchell The Analytics of Risk Model Validation (Hardcover, New)
George A. Christodoulakis, Stephen Satchell
R1,768 Discovery Miles 17 680 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Risk model validation is an emerging and important area of research, and has arisen because of Basel I and II. These regulatory initiatives require trading institutions and lending institutions to compute their reserve capital in a highly analytic way, based on the use of internal risk models. It is part of the regulatory structure that these risk models be validated both internally and externally, and there is a great shortage of information as to best practise. Editors Christodoulakis and Satchell collect papers that are beginning to appear by regulators, consultants, and academics, to provide the first collection that focuses on the quantitative side of model validation. The book covers the three main areas of risk: Credit Risk and Market and Operational Risk.
*Risk model validation is a requirement of Basel I and II
*The first collection of papers in this new and developing area of research
*International authors cover model validation in credit, market, and operational risk

A Handbook of Alternative Theories of Public Economics (Paperback): Francesco Forte, Ram Mudambi, Pietro Maria Navarra A Handbook of Alternative Theories of Public Economics (Paperback)
Francesco Forte, Ram Mudambi, Pietro Maria Navarra
R1,587 Discovery Miles 15 870 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Economics has a very strong paradigm, grounded in rational choice behavior and concepts of equilibrium in markets. But it has its weaknesses. These were never more apparent than in recent years after the failure to predict, or even understand the financial crisis of 2007-8 and the subsequent crisis of the euro. Exactly what these weaknesses are is of course the subject of much debate. But the crisis and the associated failures of the dominant paradigm have had at least one salutary side effect, of providing room for other ways of thinking to come forward and to be heard. This volume focuses on alternative approaches to public economics. It surveys a number of alternative approaches, and also provides some unusual perspectives. It includes contributions by well known economists such as Giorgio Brosio and Pierre Salmon, and a chapter by Coco and Fedeli employing a Marxian economic approach to public economics. Some of the chapters are very novel, including two chapters on cognitive dissonance and one on the role of memory in modeling cycles of extreme events. There are also chapters on Austrian economics. And there is a welcome discussion of economic approaches to religion and values, including a chapter on religion by the distinguished economist Dennis Mueller, and contributions on the role of values and ethics in politics and public economics. All in all, the book provides a most welcome sourcebook of new and sometimes very different ways of thinking about public economics.' - Ronald Wintrobe, Western UniversityThis comprehensive and thought-provoking Handbook reviews public sector economics from pluralist perspectives that either complement or reach beyond mainstream views. The book takes a comprehensive interdisciplinary approach, drawing on economic elements in the fields of philosophy, sociology, psychology, history and law. The expert contributors present new methodological approaches across these disciplines in five distinct sections: - 'Revisiting the Theoretical Foundations' compares and contrasts Austrians, Marxists, public choice theorists and Keynesians - 'Revisiting the Values' is concerned with justice, welfare, religions and civil rights - 'Beyond Rationalistic Rational Choice' includes chapters devoted to memory, information and group motivation - The final sections on 'Optimal Government and Government Failure' and 'Public Economics of Public Bads' deal with competition among governments, their suboptimal size, regulation, corruption, the informal economy, cognitive dissonance, rent seeking, the UN and criminal cycles. Academics, researchers and students with an interest in economics - particularly public sector economics and Austrian economics - and public policy will find this Handbook to be an invaluable reference tool. Monetary Policy after the Great Recession - The Role of Interest Rates (Paperback): Arkadiusz Sieron Monetary Policy after the Great Recession - The Role of Interest Rates (Paperback)
Arkadiusz Sieron
R1,286 Discovery Miles 12 860 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Walter Bagehot noticed once that "John Bull can stand many things, but he cannot stand two per cent." Well, for several years, he has had to stand interest rates well below that, in some countries even below zero. However, despite this sacrifice, the economic recovery from the Great Recession has been disappointingly weak. This book's aim is to answer this question. The central thesis of the book is that the standard understanding of the monetary transmission mechanism is flawed. That understanding adopts erroneous assumptions-such as, that low interest rates always stimulate economic growth by boosting the credit supply, investment, and consumption-and does not fully take into account several unintended channels of monetary policy, such as risk-taking, high level of debt, or zombification of the economy. In other words, the effectiveness of monetary policy is limited during economic downturns accompanied by the debt overhang and the balance sheet recession, and generates negative effects, which can make the policy counterproductive. The author provides a thorough analysis of the issues related to the interest rates in the conduct of monetary policy, such as the risk-taking channel of monetary policy, the portfolio-balance channel and the wealth effect, zombie firms in the economy, the misallocation of resources, as well as the neutral interest rate targeting and the difference between the neutral and natural interest rate and the negative interest rate policy. The book is written in an accessible and engaging manner and will be a valuable resource for scholars of monetary economics as well as readers interested in (unconventional) monetary policy.

Consumer Financial Vulnerabilities in Malaysia - Issues, Trends and Psychological Aspects (Paperback): Izlin Ismail, Mahfuzur... Consumer Financial Vulnerabilities in Malaysia - Issues, Trends and Psychological Aspects (Paperback)
Izlin Ismail, Mahfuzur Rahman, Nurul Shahnaz Ahmad Mahdzan, Mohd Edil Abd Sukor
R1,283 Discovery Miles 12 830 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book examines four aspects of Malaysian consumers' financial vulnerabilities. First, it discusses the issue of over-indebtedness due to excessive reliance on consumer financing. Second, the book investigates why Malaysians are ill-prepared for their golden years in terms of retirement planning and savings. Third, it delves into the problem of financial fraud victimisation among Malaysian consumers. Fourth, the book analyses the reasons why Malaysians are underinsured despite the distinct benefits of life insurance. Drawing on secondary data from government agencies such as Bank Negara Malaysia, Employees' Provident Fund, Royal Malaysian Police and the Department of Statistics Malaysia, each chapter presents statistical trends reflecting the four financial vulnerabilities. In-depth analyses of the literature reveal three broad psychological domains (cognition, motivation, and disposition) and specific psychological factors (e.g. over-confidence, self-control, social norms, and financial literacy) that significantly influence consumers' financial decisions. The four financial vulnerabilities investigated in this book directly address the strategic outcomes of the Malaysian National Strategy for Financial Literacy 2019-2023 (MNSFL), a five-year plan to elevate the financial literacy of Malaysians. Finally, the book presents strategic recommendations that are believed to be useful guidelines for relevant policymakers to promote positive financial behaviours and rational attitudes among consumers. It will be a useful resource for policymakers and researchers interested in economic psychology and behavioural finance.

Behavioural Public Finance - Individuals, Society, and the State (Paperback): M. Mustafa Erdogdu, Larissa Batrancea, Savas Cevik Behavioural Public Finance - Individuals, Society, and the State (Paperback)
M. Mustafa Erdogdu, Larissa Batrancea, Savas Cevik
R1,294 Discovery Miles 12 940 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book tackles political, social, and behavioural aspects of public finance and fiscal exchange. The book combines conventional approaches toward public finance with new developments in economics such as political governance, social and individual aspects of economic behaviour. It colligates public finance and behavioural economics and gathers original contributions within the emerging field of behavioural public finance. The book addresses public finance topics by incorporating political, social, and behavioural aspects of economic decision-making, assuming the tax relationship is shaped by three dimensions of decision-making. Thus, it aims not only to reflect the interdisciplinary nature of public finance by bringing together scholars from various disciplines but also to examine public finance through the lens of political, social, and behavioural aspects. The book scrutinizes the relationship between political institutions, governance types, and public finance; it investigates the impact of social context, social capital, and societal cooperation on public finance; it explores behavioural biases of individual fiscal preferences. This book is of interest to scholars, policymakers, tax professionals, business professionals, financers, university students, and researchers in the fields of public policy and economics.

Fiscal Policy and Environmental Welfare - Modelling Interjurisdictional Competition (Hardcover): Thorsten Bayindir-Upmann Fiscal Policy and Environmental Welfare - Modelling Interjurisdictional Competition (Hardcover)
Thorsten Bayindir-Upmann
R2,905 Discovery Miles 29 050 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In this innovative book the author examines the link between environmental, trade and industrial policies within an interregional setting. He models how regional governments, using tax rates on real capital and pollutant emissions, determine policies to favour their residents in terms of the provision of public goods and reduction in environmental degradation.Regions or countries engage in competition for mobile capital in a world where production causes pollution and tax revenues are required to finance public goods. In Fiscal Policy and Environmental Welfare the author considers the efficiency consequences when governments act strategically and seek to manage trade, capital flows and emissions. Using formal models, which extend and modify existing literature, the author demonstrates that interjurisdictional competition typically leads to inefficiencies. He argues that although interjurisdictional competition may lead to the overprovision of public goods and to an inefficiently high environmental quality, often the opposite seems to occur. This book will be welcomed by environmental economists, and those scholars interested in welfare and fiscal policy.

Monte Carlo Methods in Finance (Hardcover): P Jackel Monte Carlo Methods in Finance (Hardcover)

R2,884 Discovery Miles 28 840 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"There is no book on the market to compare with Dr Jäckel's. All the techniques, the tricks, the pitfalls of this important methodology are covered in detail and with great insight. This is no book on abstract theory, Dr Jäckel is a practitioner who has implemented every single one of these ideas. He has done all the hard work, so you don't have to." Paul Wilmott

"Few expert practitioners also have the academic expertise to match Peter Jäckel's in this area, let alone take the trouble to write a most accessible, comprehensive and yet self contained text. This book is a delight to read and contains a wealth of information that is essential for anyone involved with implementing Monte Carlo methods in finance." " This book is a very welcome addition to the growing literature on applied quantitative methods in finance. Dr Jäckel has done the field a service in combining both a thorough review of 'standard' material with techniques that were learned on the job as a quant at top financial institutions. Michael Curran, Quantin' Leap

Based on the author's own experience, Monte Carlo Methods in Finance adopts a practical flavour throughout, the emphasis being on financial modelling and derivatives pricing. Numerous real world examples help the reader foster an intuitive grasp of the mathematical and numerical techniques needed to solve particular financial problems. At the same time, the book tries to give a detailed explanation of the theoretical foundations of the various methods and algorithms presented.

Monte Carlo methods have been used in the financial community for many years for addressing complex financial calculations. Recent advances by both practitioners and academic researchers in the area of fast convergence methods, together with the improvements achieved by the manufacturers of computer hardware, make Monte Carlo simulations more and more frequently the method of choice. In this long needed book on modern Monte Carlo methods in finance, Peter Jäckel provides an introduction to many of the leading edge techniques available.
