Competitiveness and the Value of Intangible Assets (Hardcover): Pierre Buigues, Alexis Jacquemin, Jean-Francois Marchipont Competitiveness and the Value of Intangible Assets (Hardcover)
Pierre Buigues, Alexis Jacquemin, Jean-Francois Marchipont
R3,644 Discovery Miles 36 440 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Intangible assets are of growing importance to corporate competitiveness and economic performance. They include R&D, human capital, innovation in products and in organisation, trademarks and patents, networking and software. This path-breaking book provides a theoretical and empirical analysis of intangible investment and its effect on public policy in Europe. The authors find that the growing importance of intangibles is transforming the direction of public policies in Europe, particularly industrial, R&D, competition and trade policies. They conclude that government policies must recognise the fact that intangible investment is becoming the key element in bringing about durable growth and accord at least the same priority to intangible factors as to physical investment. This work should be essential reading for students interested in this new field of economic analysis, national and international policymakers, and industrialists involved in the non-physical economy.

Richard Eccleston, Richard Krever
R3,788 Discovery Miles 37 880 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The global financial crisis had a dramatic short-term effect on federal relations and, as the twelve case studies in this illuminating book show, set in place a new set of socio-political factors that are shaping the longer-run process of institutional change in federal systems. The Future of Federalism illustrates how an understanding of these complex dynamics is crucial to the development of policies needed for effective and sustainable federal governance in the 21st century. The book finds that growing fiscal pressures are interacting with domestic political variables to produce country specific federal dynamics. Arguably the first detailed study of the medium term impact of the financial crisis and its aftermath on federal governance, this volume highlights how growing budget pressures are contributing to increased centralisation in many federations, while in others national governments are devolving power to appease regional grievances and preserve the federal union. Contributions from leading federalism and public finance scholars test recent theoretical explanations of change in federal systems against the experiences of a diverse cross-section of federal jurisdictions. The case studies include both established federations and 'federalizing' jurisdictions, such as the UK and China, and highlights the complex dynamics which shape the evolution of federal governance Comprehensive and interdisciplinary, this timely book will appeal to students and scholars - from political science, economics and law - studying federalism, governance studies and comparative political economy. It is essential reading for public officials and policy makers interested in intergovernmental relations, public finance and budgeting and tax policy. Contributors include: J.R. Afonso, D.M. Brown, C. Colino, T.J. Conlan, L. de Mello, E. del Pino, R. Eccleston, R. Hortle, R. Jha, R. Krever, S. Lee, R. Mabugu, E. Massetti, P. Mellor, J. Schnellenbach, N. Soguel, C. Wong

Legal Aspects of Crowdfunding (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021): Caroline Kleiner Legal Aspects of Crowdfunding (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2021)
Caroline Kleiner
R5,261 Discovery Miles 52 610 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book offers a comparative perspective on 18 countries' legal regulation of crowdfunding. In the wake of the financial crises of 2008, use of this alternative financing method has increased substantially, in various forms. Whereas some states have adopted tailor-made regimes in order to regulate but also encourage this way of financing projects, allowing loans to be made by non-banking institutions, others still haven't specifically addressed the subject. An analysis of these diverse legislative stances offers readers a range of legal solutions for managing crowdfunding activities with regard to e.g. protecting investors, imposing limits on project owners, and finally the role and duties of intermediaries, i.e., companies operating crowdfunding platforms. In addition, the content presented here provides a legal basis for states and supranational organizations interested in regulating this phenomenon to achieve more legal certainty.

Robert Lensink, Hong Bo, Elmer Sterken
R2,719 Discovery Miles 27 190 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book presents an up-to-date overview of the theory as well as the empirics of the relationship between investment, financial imperfections and uncertainty. After reviewing the capital market imperfections literature and the empirical results, the authors discuss both traditional investment models with uncertainty and the more modern option based models. They present an overview of empirical results of the modelling of investment under uncertainty. In these examples, the effects of capital market imperfections on investment are carefully considered. The authors conclude that there is overwhelming empirical support for a negative uncertainty-investment relationship. This innovative book will appeal to academics with an interest in investment theory, professionals in the financial sector and students of macroeconomics and finance. Investment, Capital Market Imperfections, and Uncertainty assumes only a basic knowledge of mathematics and is easily accessible.

Aaron Graham
R1,709 Discovery Miles 17 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book brings together for the first time more than half a dozen proposals for an imperial paper currency in the mid-eighteenth century British Atlantic, to show how manage colonial currency and banking in the expanding empire. Existing studies have looked at the successes and failures of schemes in individual colonies. But some had grander ambitions, such as Benjamin Franklin, and offered proposals for 'imperial' or 'continental' paper currencies and monetary unions which would help knit together colonial territories throughout North America and even the Caribbean into a cohesive whole during a moment of imperial reform. This book brings together these proposals for the first time, including several never studied before, to show how thinkers and writers on empire, currency and finance drew on financial practices, precedents and principles from across the British Atlantic to present their own visions of monetary union and the future of empire. In doing so it makes an important and original contribution to the wider histories of monetary and financial thought and theory and the roots of American monetary policy, and the links between finance, empire, politics, reform and revolution. It will be of interest to academics working on the history of finance, banking and currency in the British Isles, North America and the Caribbean in the eighteenth century, as well as those working on the political economy of the British Empire, including mercantilism, trade, warfare and the politics of empire in the decades leading up to the American Revolution.

The Political Economy of Local Government - Leadership, Reform and Market Failure (Hardcover, illustrated edition): Brian E.... The Political Economy of Local Government - Leadership, Reform and Market Failure (Hardcover, illustrated edition)
Brian E. Dollery, Joe L. Wallis
R2,960 Discovery Miles 29 600 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In recent decades, local government has become increasingly complex. The Political Economy of Local Government draws upon recent developments in economics, including new institutional economics, and contemporary advances in the theories of social capital and leadership, in order to explain local government policy formulation. The authors go beyond the study of local public goods to explore the sources of market failure and examine whether local authorities are more susceptible to certain types of government failure. In addition, a transaction cost analysis of markets, hierarchies and networks is applied to ascertain the comparative institutional advantage local authorities might have in the supply of local governance. The book also considers the extent of the influence that these recent advances in the theories of social capital and leadership have on the process and implementation of local government policy. This book offers a fresh and readily accessible perspective on the political economy of local government policy making, and will be of particular interest to students and practitioners of economics, political science, public administration, policy studies and local government.

Law and the Financial System - Securitization and Asset Backed Securities - Law, Process, Case Studies, and Simulations... Law and the Financial System - Securitization and Asset Backed Securities - Law, Process, Case Studies, and Simulations (Hardcover)
Tamar T Frankel, Mark Fagan
R2,271 Discovery Miles 22 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Law and the Financial System: Securitization and Asset Backed Securities provides students and practitioners with a comprehensive source of materials and references for understanding the process and issues that surround the conversion of illiquid financial assets into tradable securities. The book begins with an overview of the financial system and the place of securitization in the system. The book focuses on the process and law of securitization and is derived largely from Tamar Frankel's treaties, Securitization (2nd ed. 2005). The book concludes with a global view of securitization and an assessment of the impact and future of securitizing financial assets. The legal text is enhanced with case studies and simulation exercises that bring context and practical application to the subject. Study questions covering law, business and public policy provide students with an opportunity to discuss and debate areas where answers are complex and often indeterminate. Simulation exercises enable students to test their own ideas with their peers using real world examples. The book can be used as a stand alone course on securitization or as a supplementary text for courses on financial regulation. Practitioners will find the book a useful desk reference. This is the second book co-authored by Mark Fagan and Tamar Frankel. The first was "Trust and Honesty in the Real World" (2007). About the authors: Tamar Frankel authored Fiduciary Law (2008), Trust and Honesty, America's Business Culture at a Crossroad (2006), Securitization (2d.ed 2006), The Regulation of Money Managers (2d ed. 2001 with Ann Taylor Schwing), and more than 70 articles. A long-time member of the Boston University School of Law faculty, Professor Frankel was a visiting scholar at the Securities and Exchange Commission and at the Brookings Institution. A native of Israel, Professor Frankel served in the Israeli Air Force, was an assistant attorney general for Israel's Ministry of Justice and the legal advisor of the State of Israel Bonds Organization in Europe. She practiced in Israel, Boston and Washington, D.C. and is a member of the Massachusetts Bar, the American Law Institute, and The American Bar Foundation. Mr. Fagan's research centers on the role of regulation in competitive markets. He has written about the impact of deregulation in the financial, transportation and electricity sectors. He teaches courses and guest lectures at Boston University School of Law and at Harvard Kennedy School. He has been a frequent seminar speaker at Harvard Kennedy School's Mossavar-Rahmani Center for Business and Government; recent topics include the subprime disaster, securitization, Ponzi schemes, and financial bubbles. Mark Fagan is a founding partner of Norbridge, Inc. a general management consulting firm. He works with clients in the transportation, telecommunications and utility industries as they grapple with increasing shareholder value in a deregulated world. Prior to Norbridge, he was a Vice President of Mercer Management Consulting.

Analysis and Public Policy - Successes, Failures and Directions for Reform (Hardcover): Stuart Shapiro Analysis and Public Policy - Successes, Failures and Directions for Reform (Hardcover)
Stuart Shapiro
R2,523 Discovery Miles 25 230 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

How do we incorporate analytical thinking into public policy decisions? Stuart Shapiro confronts this issue in Analysis and Public Policy by looking at various types of analysis, and discussing how they are used in regulatory policy-making in the US. By looking at the successes and failures of incorporating cost-benefit analysis, risk assessment, and environmental impact assessment, he draws broader lessons on its use, focusing on the interactions between analysis and political factors, legal structures and bureaucratic organizations as possible areas for reform.Utilizing empirical and qualitative research, Shapiro analyzes four different forms of analysis: cost-benefit analysis, risk assessment, environmental impact assessment, and impact analysis. After interviewing nearly fifty individuals who have served in high levels of government, and who have made countless regulatory policy decisions in their careers, Shapiro argues that advocates must become less ambitious and should craft requirements for simpler and clearer analysis. Such analysis, particularly if informed by public participation, can do a great deal to improve government decisions. As this book details the relationship between analysis and institutional factors such as politics, bureaucracy, and law, it is appropriate for a variety of readers, such as scholars of policy, students, scholars of regulation, and congressional and state legislative staff looking to create new analytical requirements.
