Know This - Today's Most Interesting and Important Scientific Ideas, Discoveries, and Developments (Paperback): John... Know This - Today's Most Interesting and Important Scientific Ideas, Discoveries, and Developments (Paperback)
John Brockman
R459 Discovery Miles 4 590 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Today's most visionary thinkers reveal the cutting-edge scientific ideas and breakthroughs you must understand. Scientific developments radically change and enlighten our understanding of the world -- whether it's advances in technology and medical research or the latest revelations of neuroscience, psychology, physics, economics, anthropology, climatology, or genetics. And yet amid the flood of information today, it's often difficult to recognize the truly revolutionary ideas that will have lasting impact. In the spirit of identifying the most significant new theories and discoveries, John Brockman, publisher of Edge.org ("The world's smartest website" -- The Guardian), asked 198 of the finest minds What do you consider the most interesting recent scientific news? What makes it important? Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Guns, Germs, and Steel Jared Diamond on the best way to understand complex problems * author of Seven Brief Lessons on Physics Carlo Rovelli on the mystery of black holes * Harvard psychologist Steven Pinker on the quantification of human progress * TED Talks curator Chris J. Anderson on the growth of the global brain * Harvard cosmologist Lisa Randall on the true measure of breakthrough discoveries * Nobel Prize-winning physicist Frank Wilczek on why the twenty-first century will be shaped by our mastery of the laws of matter * philosopher Rebecca Newberger Goldstein on the underestimation of female genius * music legend Peter Gabriel on tearing down the barriers between imagination and reality * Princeton physicist Freeman Dyson on the surprising ability of small (and cheap) upstarts to compete with billion-dollar projects. Plus Nobel laureate John C. Mather, Sun Microsystems cofounder Bill Joy, Wired founding editor Kevin Kelly, psychologist Alison Gopnik, Genome author Matt Ridley, Harvard geneticist George Church, Why Does the World Exist? author Jim Holt, anthropologist Helen Fisher, and more.

The Encyclopaedia of Everything Else - The Ultimate A-Z of Bizarre Information (Hardcover, Main): William Hartston The Encyclopaedia of Everything Else - The Ultimate A-Z of Bizarre Information (Hardcover, Main)
William Hartston
R526 Discovery Miles 5 260 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A delightful and witty treasure trove of utterly useless information by the author of The Things That Nobody Knows. Most encyclopaedias are boring. They are so packed with worthy but dull facts that a great deal of weird and wonderful material is squeezed out. The Encyclopaedia of Everything Else takes the opposite approach and leaves out all the dreary stuff you can find elsewhere. The result is the most fascinating, astonishing, varied and utterly useless collection of information ever assembled and organized between two covers. From aardvark tooth bracelets to the genus of tropical weevils known as Zyzzyva, via Mark Twain's views about cabbages, this is a quarter of a million words of sublime pointlessness.

All the Knowledge in the World - The Extraordinary History of the Encyclopaedia (Paperback): Simon Garfield All the Knowledge in the World - The Extraordinary History of the Encyclopaedia (Paperback)
Simon Garfield
R471 R439 Discovery Miles 4 390 Save R32 (7%) Ships in 9 - 17 working days

The encyclopaedia once shaped our understanding of the world. Created by thousands of scholars and the most obsessive of editors, adults cleared their shelves in the belief that wisdom was now effortlessly accessible in their living rooms. Contributions from Albert Einstein, Sigmund Freud, Orville Wright, Alfred Hitchcock, Marie Curie and Indira Gandhi helped millions of children with their homework. But now these huge books gather dust and sell for almost nothing on eBay, and we derive our information from the internet, apparently for free. What have we lost in this transition? And how did we tell the progress of our lives in the past? All the Knowledge in the World is a history and celebration of those who created the most ground-breaking and remarkable publishing phenomenon of any age. It tracks the story from Ancient Greece to Wikipedia, from modest single-volumes to the 11,000-volume Chinese manuscript that was too big to print. It looks at how Encyclopaedia Britannica came to dominate the industry and how an army of ingenious door-to-door salesmen sold their wares to guilt-ridden parents. It explains how encyclopaedias have reflected our changing attitudes towards sexuality, race and technology, and exposes how these ultimate bastions of trust were often riddled with errors and prejudice. With his characteristic ability to tackle the broadest of subjects in an illuminating and highly entertaining way, Simon Garfield uncovers a fascinating and important part of our past, and wonders whether the promise of complete knowledge - that most human of ambitions - will forever be beyond our grasp.

Judicial Review in EU Law (Hardcover): Alexander H. Turk Judicial Review in EU Law (Hardcover)
Alexander H. Turk
R4,673 Discovery Miles 46 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Judicial review constitutes an important aspect of any legal system operating under the rule of law. This book provides a comprehensive account of judicial review in EU law by assessing the vast and complex case-law of the European Court of Justice (ECJ) in this area and the academic opinion which has accompanied its rulings over the years. It questions the prevalent view in academic literature that the Court's restrictive approach to allowing individuals direct access to the Community Courts, in case of a challenge against normative acts, amounts to a denial of an effective remedy. The author argues that the emerging constitutional nature of the European Union and its federal structure requires a more balanced view. While it will improve direct access for individuals to the Union's judiciary, the Lisbon Treaty will not radically alter the system of judicial review in the European Union. Judicial Review in EU Law will be of great interest to academics, and given its detailed discussion of case-law of the ECJ it will also appeal to postgraduate students of European law. Dealing with an important aspect of legal practice, it will be invaluable reading for practitioners in law firms and officials working in local, regional and central government.

Meddling in Middle Europe - Britain and the 'Lands Between' 1919-1925 (Hardcover): Miklos Lojko Meddling in Middle Europe - Britain and the 'Lands Between' 1919-1925 (Hardcover)
Miklos Lojko
R3,882 Discovery Miles 38 820 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This work addresses the much-ignored history of British policy towards Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Poland following the creation of nation states in Central Europe at the end of the First World War. Lojko convincingly argues that the absence of trust in the new political settlement and the discrediting of the traditional channels of diplomacy resulted in British influence in the region, being exerted mainly in the form of commercial and financial undertakings. While not always successful, the emergence of this new policy affected the development of diplomatic ties with these new nations.Yet no lasting diplomatic leverage resulted from this British involvement, and the absence of such influence proved fatal in the late 1930's when the new system of nations was disintegrating under the pressure of escalating violence.

Encyclopaedia Britannica, or a Dictionary of Arts and Sciences (Hardcover): Encyclopaedia Britannica, or a Dictionary of Arts and Sciences (Hardcover)
R31,676 Discovery Miles 316 760 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Originally sponsored by "a Society of Gentlemen in Scotland," this was in fact simply an Edinburgh trio of the editor William Smellie, the engraver Andrew Bell, and Colin Macfarquahar the printer. Amazingly, this milestone in the history of encyclopaedia making was first issued in one hundred parts in less than three years. Inspired by the success of Diderot's Encyclopedia, the three Scotsmen hoped to imporve on its short-comings. It was the first English-language compendium to be called an encyclopaedia, and unlike rival publications it was published in quarto rather than the usual octavo or folio format. The encyclopaedia was compiled on a completely new plan, alphabetically arranged, combining easy reference to individual items, terms and minor topics. It was a pioneering way to organize and disseminate learning. Given the speed of publication and the small jack-of-all-trades team involved, the first edition could not hope to rival the elaborate and lavishly-produced editions that continue to this day.
