My task in this work was to give you every shade of grey available. However, I have singularly failed in this task. I only recently discovered, after many years researching every shade of grey, that the printing technique used in this book only uses black ink. Therefore, the shades of grey presented are merely an illusion.

The "Encyclopedia of the Battle of Franklin" is the ultimate guidebook for all those interested in this truly momentous conflict. For tourists it's an imperative traveling companion; for Civil War buffs and scholars an indispensable reference; for history students an essential educational tool; and for the casual reader a fascinating chronicle of one of American history's most significant political and military struggles. With nearly 1,000 entries on subjects ranging from Confederate and Union regiments to biographies of important figures associated with the battle, the work also includes hundreds of illustrations, maps, and photos, eyewitness descriptions of the fight, a full list of the Rebel dead at the McGavock Confederate Cemetery, and a complete record of both the C.S. and U.S. forces present on the Franklin battlefield November 30, 1864. This Civil War Sesquicentennial Edition, the first and only encyclopedia ever written that is devoted solely to a single Civil War battle, also includes official battle reports, command structure charts, genealogical information, an entry index, a 1,000 book bibliography, and 19th-Century tributes to Confederate officers who perished at the Battle of Franklin. In addition, the author generously provides material on the battles that immediately preceded it (Columbia and Spring Hill) as well as those that followed it (Nashville and Franklin III), covering nearly every war related historical site on the popular "Antebellum Trail" that today runs through Middle Tennessee. This handy detailed compendium is destined to become a classic in its field. The Foreword is by Michael Givens, Commander-in-Chief of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Lochlainn Seabrook, winner of the prestigious Jefferson Davis Historical Gold Medal, is a seventh-generation Kentuckian and the author of over thirty popular adult and children's books. Known as one of the world's leading pro-South writers, the unreconstructed Southern historian and poet has a thirty-year background in the American Civil War and Confederate studies and biography. He lives with his wife and family in historic Middle Tennessee, the heart of the Confederacy. An attractive, unique, and popular tourist-friendly work that will appeal to both casual Civil War buffs and hardcore Civil War scholars alike, the "Encyclopedia of the Battle of Franklin" is the perfect addition to any retail outlet, including not only bookstores, but Civil War sites, historic houses, museum gift stores, antique shops, B&Bs, tack shops, motorcycle shops, and gun stores. Seabrook's other titles include: "Everything You Were Taught About the Civil War is Wrong, Ask a Southerner "; "Honest Jeff and Dishonest Abe: A Southern Children's Guide to the Civil War"; "A Rebel Born: A Defense of Nathan Bedford Forrest"; "The Quotable Robert E. Lee"; "Give 'Em Hell Boys The Complete Military Correspondence of Nathan Bedford Forrest"; "Lincolnology: The Real Abraham Lincoln Revealed in His Own Words"; "The Quotable Nathan Bedford Forrest"; "The Quotable Jefferson Davis"; "Nathan Bedford Forrest: Southern Hero, American Patriot"; "The Old Rebel: Robert E. Lee As He Was Seen By His Contemporaries"; "Abraham Lincoln: The Southern View"; "The McGavocks of Carnton Plantation: A Southern History"; "The Unquotable Abraham Lincoln: The President's Quotes They Don't Want You to Know "; "Carnton Plantation Ghost Stories: True Tales of the Unexplained From Tennessee's Most Haunted Civil War House "; and "The Caudills: An Etymological, Ethnological, and Genealogical Study."

This volume of The New Encyclopedia of Southern Culture offers a timely, authoritative, and interdisciplinary exploration of issues related to social class in the South from the colonial era to the present. With introductory essays by J. Wayne Flynt and by editors Larry J. Griffin and Peggy G. Hargis, the volume is a comprehensive, stand-alone reference to this complex subject, which underpins the history of the region and shapes its future. In 58 thematic essays and 103 topical entries, the contributors explore the effects of class on all aspects of life in the South-its role in Indian removal, the Civil War, the New Deal, and the civil rights movement, for example, and how it manifested in religion, sports, country and gospel music, and matters of gender. Artisans and the working class, indentured workers and steelworkers, the Freedman's Bureau and the Knights of Labour are all examined. This volume provides a full investigation of social class in the region and situates class concerns at the centre of our understanding of Southern culture.
