The Body Artist begins with normality: breakfast between a married couple, Lauren and Rey, in their ramshackle rented house on the New England coast. Recording their delicate, intimate, half-complete thoughts and words, Don DeLillo proves himself a stunningly unsentimental observer of our idiosyncratic relationships. But after breakfast, Rey makes a decision that leaves Lauren utterly alone, or seems to. As Lauren, the body artist of the title, becomes strangely detached from herself and the temporal world, the novel becomes an exploration of a highly abnormal grieving process; a fascinating expose of 'who we are when we are not rehearsing who we are'; and a rarefied study of trauma and creativity, absence and presence, isolation and communion.
Despite claiming unbelief in God or any higher power that may have designed or created the world and all that is in it, modern scientists often write and speak of "chance" as some kind of being or force that can "cause "things to happen. In one breath they push the evolution agenda and in the next they say that creatures were "designed" with specific traits. In this classic book, R. C. Sproul and Keith Mathison call the scientific world to employ logic and clarity in their discourse, to leave the word "chance" as an abstract concept to describe mathematical possibilities rather than an ontological being that can actually "cause" change. This expanded edition includes a new chapter dealing with the most recent attempts to defend irrational scientific statements. Two new appendices answer critics and review other literature on scientific discoveries that support belief in a Creator God.

After Paul Stutzman finished hiking the Appalachian Trail, he found
himself longing for another challenge, another adventure. Trading
his hiking boots for a bicycle, Paul set off to discover more of
America. Starting at Neah Bay, Washington, and ending at Key West,
Florida, Paul traversed the 5,000-mile distance between the two
farthest points in the contiguous United States. Along the way he
encountered nearly every kind of terrain and weather the country
had to offer--as well as hundreds of fascinating people whose
stories readers will love. Through cold and heat, loneliness and
exhaustion, abundance and kindness, Paul pedaled on. His
reward--and the readers'--is a glimpse of a noble yet humble
America that still exists and inspires.

HOLISTIC HEALTH "Hildegard's knowledge can help Western herbal medicine return itself to an equal level of sophistication with the Eastern systems that are becoming popular today. Hildegard's medicine, therefore, has a special import today for this regeneration of our own, older, natural-healing tradition." --David Frawley, O.M.D, co-author, with Dr. Vasant Lad, of Yoga of Herbs Hildegard of Bingen, a major twelfth-century mystic and prophet, began having divinely inspired visions at the age of six. These visions continued throughout her life, and were the source of highly honored information on healing through a multidimensional approach to the body, mind, emotions, and spirit. Widely accepted by physicians and religious healers of her time, Hildegard's work was lost over the centuries, and has only recently been reborn through the work of the authors of this book. Hildegard of Bingen's Medicine is a groundbreaking contribution to medicine and healing. It contains translations of Hildegard text which reflect the high point of medieval, alchemical, and healing science. In addition, these translations are commented upon by authors who have worked clinically with Hildegard's wisdom for thirty years. Many will find this book to contain profound, long lost spiritual teachings. Hildegard's deep understanding of nature--trees, herbs, and animals--inspires a new vision of balance and planetary attunement. DR. GOTTFRIED HERTZKA is a medical doctor in Germany, and author of the bestselling book on Hildegard medicine, So heilt Gott. He has worked clinically with Hildegard's theories for thirty years. DR. WIGHARD STREHLOW was a research chemist in the pharmaceutical industry in West Germany, andnow works with Dr. Hertzka in the Hildegard Practice at Konstanz, West Germany.

From places like John Piper's den, Al Mohler's office, and Jonathan Edwards's college, Christianity Today journalist Collin Hansen investigates what makes today's young Calvinists tick. Church-growth strategies and charismatic worship have fueled the bulk of evangelical growth in America for decades. While baby boomers have flocked to churches that did not look or sound like church, it seems these churches do not so broadly capture the passions of today's twenty-something evangelicals. In fact, a desire for transcendence and tradition among young evangelicals has contributed to a Reformed resurgence. For nearly two years, Christianity Today journalist Collin Hansen visited the chief schools, churches, and conferences of this growing movement. He sought to describe its members and ask its leading pastors and theologians about the causes and implications of the Calvinist resurgence. The result, Young, Restless, Reformed, shows common threads in their diverse testimonies and suggests what tomorrow's church might look like when these young evangelicals become pastors or professors.
Historically, men have been in control--of nations, of wars, of
commerce, of their families. Of practically everything, except
often themselves. And those men who are fully in control of all
other aspects of their worlds are often the ones who find
themselves trapped in hidden compulsions and behaviors. From the
usual suspects like pornography and gambling to those overlooked
compulsions like overwork and withdrawal.
A wonderful paperback picture book about the joys of family and
food, from Newbery Award winning author Linda Sue Park.
The interaction of politics and the visual in the activities of nongovernmental activists. Political acts are encoded in medial forms-punch holes on a card, images on a live stream, tweets about events unfolding in real time-that have force, shaping people as subjects and forming the contours of what is sensible, legible, and visible. In doing so they define the terms of political possibility and create terrain for political acts. Sensible Politics considers the constitutive role played by aesthetic and performative techniques in the staging of claims by nongovernmental activists. Attending to political aesthetics means focusing not on a disembodied image that travels under the concept of art or visual culture, nor on a preformed domain of the political that seeks subsequent expression in media form. Instead it requires bringing the two realms together into the same analytic frame. A diverse group of contributors, from art historians, anthropologists, and political theorists to artists, filmmakers, and architects, considers the interaction of politics and the visual in such topics as the political consequences of a photograph taken by an Israeli soldier in a Palestinian house in Ramallah; AIDS activism; images of social suffering in Iran; the "forensic architecture" of claims to truth; and the "Make Poverty History" campaign. Transcending disciplines, they trace a broader image complex whereby politics is brought to visibility through the mediation of specific cultural forms that mix the legal and the visual, the hermeneutic and the technical, the political and the aesthetic. Their contributions offer critical insight into the practices of mediation whereby the political becomes manifest.
Biblical theology is taken down from the shelves of misunderstanding and neglect and placed in pastors' hands as the practical, everyday tool it is. Capitol Hill Baptist Church associate pastor Michael Lawrence contributes to the IXMarks series as he centers on the practical importance of biblical theology to ministry. He begins with an examination of a pastor's tools of the trade: exegesis and biblical and systematic theology. The book distinguishes between the power of narrative in biblical theology and the power of application in systematic theology, but also emphasizes the importance of their collaboration in ministry. Having laid the foundation for pastoral ministry, Lawrence uses the three tools to build a biblical theology, telling the entire story of the Bible from five different angles. He puts biblical theology to work in four areas: counseling, missions, caring for the poor, and church/state relations. Rich in application and practical insight, this book will equip pastors and church leaders to think, preach, and do ministry through the framework of biblical theology.
For many of us, the attempt to live for God can leave us feeling burdened rather than free. Yet that's not the kind of life God intends for us to experience. What if he never meant for us to try so hard? What if overcoming sin doesn't rely on our own self-control? What if loving others isn't about saying and doing all the right things? What if suffering isn't designed to teach us lessons? What if we could feel closer to God without doing anything? In God's Best-Kept Secret, the founder of Grace Life International explodes our preconceived notions of living the Christian life, freeing us to stop just going through the motions and to experience true fulfillment. Illuminating commonly misunderstood Bible verses, Mark Maulding shows us that following God is not as complicated as we often make it out to be. And, in fact, the answer to our struggles has been hiding in plain sight all along.
We say we're free in Christ, but many of us are still living in captivity--to fear, anger, shame, isolation, unforgiveness, and control. We're good at faking it around others, but we're exhausted by the ruse. Andi Andrew wants women to break free of their self-imposed prisons and live the lives that are rightly theirs in Christ. Sharing her own intentional journey of finding true freedom by surrendering control of her heart and life to the God who welcomed her with open arms, Andrew encourages women to give their pain and brokenness to Jesus. She shows them how to purposefully take captive the lies they have believed and replace them with God's truth. Compassionate and biblically based, She Is Free is an invitation to women to step fully into the love that sets them free. |
