In a world of screens and social media, people are constantly searching for ways to reconnect to the handmade and the authentic-to add a personal spark and a beautiful look to everyday objects and occasions. The art of modern lettering is a point of connection, a way of crafting letters and words into something that delights the eyes and feeds the soul. With unique projects and an Instagram-worthy aesthetic, By Hand provides an inspirational jumping-off point for readers who want to incorporate lettering into a slower, more intentional lifestyle. Blending the aspirational and the instructional, By Hand brings the beauty of lettering beyond the page, through 30 distinct projects, from dip-dyed place cards to acrylic home furnishings. Encouraging lessons sprinkled throughout the book add a touch of mindfulness, while bright, airy photography and step-by-step lettered samples make this lovely volume a stunning approach to an on-trend pastime.
A boy's father departs for war on his son's first birthday. At age three he is orphaned by his father's death a half a world away. For fifty-five years the boy has two photos and a Purple Heart representing the father he never knew. In his late fifties he discovers a desire to know this man called his father. Twelve years of research reveals the life and the death of this man called Dad. This is a story of discovery and of revelation, a search driven by a desire to know and, at times, slowed by the fear of knowing. Was he a good man? The story reveals the truth of who he was, and now is, in the mind of his son.
The Price of Folly is a unique examination of the American form of Capitalism from the perspective of history, politics, law, and religion, as well as established economic theories. As the subtitle indicates, this book attempts to make economics and economic failures clear and understandable to the layperson. In a trip through time from Adam Smith to the 2012 election, it is a systematic critique of the plutocracy our American economic system has become, including a healthy dose of ethical theory and philosophical and religious ethics as the prism through which the reader can gain a fresh perspective on the inequities in our economic system. Bill Durland's unique background includes degrees in History, Political Science, Philosophy and Theology and years of experience as a civil rights lawyer, community organizer and teacher, giving him the tools and credentials necessary for this undertaking. He asks the fundamental question of why our economic system rejects the ethics of participatory democracy that our religious and political systems have accepted as their guide. He suggests we consider alternative economic systems such as cooperativism or a mixed economy. A must read for anyone wishing to understand the most recent Great Recession, its causes and how similar crises might be forestalled.
From 1990-1997, Drew Ross served as a forensic psychiatrist for the criminal justice system. His job was to judge the "sanity" of people charged with murder. The law requires black-and-white answers; unfortunately, Ross' training had taught him that the human mind is more complex than the law would allow. Looking Into the Eyes of a Killer details one man's journey into the darkness of the human psyche and the evils of a system. Standing at the crossroads of psychiatry and the law, Ross explores the many contradictions and misconceptions that prevail when juries and judges evaluate insanity pleas and issues of blame. Never falling prey to easy solutions, he makes a compelling argument for new guidelines for dealing with violent criminals, and shows how our failure to "reform" them springs from our unwillingness to confront ourselves.

Human civilization has undergone many changes over the past five thousand years, but have we made any real progress or simply created more problems for ourselves? If we continue on our current course, what may the future hold? What role has technology played in creating the major problems that exist today? What promise, or peril, do emerging technologies present? Are our social systems part of the problem or the solution to our problems? This book addresses all of these questions by leveraging a unique perspective to explore such issues. After examining the role that technological discoveries have played in shaping human civilization, this work examines how emerging technologies in the fields of genetic engineering, nanotechnology, and robotics (the "GNR technologies") may ultimately determine the future of humans as well as other life on Earth. This work also proposes a novel solution to the major problems facing us by leveraging certain GNR technologies to evolve ourselves to a more elevated state of being. In this evolved utopian state, we are free from all of the stresses of modern life, we no longer engage in environmentally harmful practices, and we are able to adopt social systems which correct for the flaws in our current economic, political, and religious systems. At the same time, this book recognizes the significant dangers inherent in pursuing the GNR technologies. This work also discusses how our current economic, political, and religious systems increase the likelihood that the pursuit of the GNR technologies will accelerate us down a self-destructive path. Thus, unlike most books relating to technology, this one takes a holistic perspective that considers the interconnections between technology, the environment, economics, politics, and religion. Absorbing, intriguing, and deeply thought-provoking, this book is sure to serve as a catalyst for initiating many a discussion on how we should manage technology to create a brighter future while simultaneously being aware of its dangers.
Restrain - Torture - Execute While such practices may seem barbaric in our modern day "civilized" society, in medieval times brutal devices of restraint, cruel tortures, and unimaginable methods of execution were used to both punish and also to send strong messages of deterrence. With over 100 photos and illustrations and drawing on his own impressive personal collection, author Steve Santini separates fact from fiction as he explores these sinister devices and how they fuctioned within the dark framework of medieval justice.
How do Sunday school teachers lead children through the stories of Cain and Abel or Judas's betrayal in a way that reflects the authority of Scripture? Sunday school curricula often glosses over difficult lessons or focuses too much on characters in Bible stories, neglecting God's self-revelation in Scripture. John and Kim Walton have created this handbook for 175 Bible stories to assist teachers and parents in knowing what each story teaches and how to present it in a God-centered way. As they work their way through the Bible, the Waltons examine seven elements in each story: focus, theme, application, place in the Bible, interpretational issues, historical and cultural background, and age-group appropriateness. The Bible Story Handbook includes introductory articles on why we teach the Bible, right and wrong ways to use the Bible, and ends with a two-year teaching plan. Every parent and Sunday school teacher will find this unique resource to be invaluable in teaching children to know and love God.

Many regard jazz as the soundtrack of America, born and raised in its cities and echoing throughout its tumultuous century of progress. So when Ernest Hemingway wrote about seeing jazz in 1920s Paris, and when British colonial officials danced to jazz in the clubs of Calcutta in the waning years of the Raj, how, exactly, had it gotten there? Jazz Worlds/World Jazz aims to answer these questions and more, bringing together voices from countries as far flung as Azerbaijan, Armenia, and India to show that the story of jazz is not trapped in American history books but alive in global modernity. Monumental in scope, this book explores the relationship between jazz and culture and how they influence each other across a range of themes and settings. Contributors offer an analysis of the social meaning of jazz in Iran, a look at the genesis of Ethiopian jazz and at Indian fusion, and chapters on jazz diplomacy, Balkan swing, and that French export par excellence: Django Reinhardt. Altogether the contributors approach jazz--in these global iterations--through the themes that have always characterized it at home: place, history, mobility, media, and race. The result is a first-of-its-kind map of jazz around the globe that pays tribute to the players who have given the form its seemingly infinite possibilities.

Christian parenting is hard work--and it's getting harder. Parents have a deep desire to pass on their faith, but fear that today's increasingly skeptical and hostile world will eventually lead their kids to reject the truth of Christianity. Then you need to have the conversations that Natasha Crain so brilliantly describes in this book. Prevent heartbreak later by reading and heeding this book now!"--Frank Turek, PhD, president of CrossExamined Ministries and author of I Don't Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist and Stealing from God "May this book lead to thousands more Moms and Dads engaging with their kids through an intelligent faith. And may there be tens of thousands more kids who feel loved because the adults in their lives take their questions seriously."--Jeff Myers, PhD, president, Summit Ministries
This compact book outlines the controversies andimplications of the central debate of the Reformation: justification by faith alone.Luther said that the doctrine of justificationby faith alone is "the article upon which the church stands orfalls." R. C. Sproul follows Luther's lead in his concise andcompelling work, now repackaged and republished. Justified byFaith Alone surveys the main tenets of the doctrine ofjustification in Roman Catholicism and evangelicalism. Sproul iscareful to accurately represent Catholic beliefs and observes thatwhile both traditions agree that faith is necessary forjustification, the difference lies in whether faith alone issufficient. He explores problems with the Catholic doctrine andchampions the sole sufficiency of Christ for our salvation.Effective and engaging, Sproul does not shyaway from difficult theological terms and ideas, but capably guidesreaders through this famous doctrinal dispute. To those who decrythe doctrines of imputation and justification by faith alone as"legal fiction," Sproul warns that nothing less than the centralmessage of the gospel is at stake.

I wrote this book to show my love, honor, and respect for Michael. I believe we are all ethereal creatures in material bodies, biologically electrical in nature. Michael used the term "divine union" and I love it. I use many sources such as: the Bible, Egyptian lore, Biblical and Traditional Numerology, Astrology, evolution of spirit in our society, writings on Archangel Michael, and Michael's life, to outline and prove His true divine nature. Michael was open, unique, curious, fearless, and loving, as children are. He wore His heart on His sleeve, as children do. He was just as easily hurt and mistreated as children can be. He had the ancient soul of an angel with the heart of a child. In order to live a spiritually enlightened, fully enriched life, a person must find meaning, love, and peace. I have always had these in my life because I have always had Michael in my life. What I outline in this book are no coincidences. They all form a pattern; a beat; a rhythm. That rhythm is the music of the spheres, of Heaven, of the universe. Michael knew this and He tried to bring everyone together to sway as one..... one family under love. With His songs and dances He captured the world's attention. We let Him into our hearts where He planted the seeds of love. We watched Him channel the white, hot, energy of God's love. This incredible energy is what we were all driven to love and admire. Michael was God's chosen messenger for our modern times and He wanted us to understand we were all sisters and brothers, all children of God. His strong, shining, spirit will live forever within the heart of each of us. He said, "We were never separate, you and I." If you read this book with an open heart and open mind, not presuming to know God's will, I am sure you will feel immense love and brilliant surprise It's all for love....... L O V E
