Marine Safety provides a toolbox of field-tested and proven tools
for assessing and managing marine risks and making better-informed
decisions to prevent marine casualties. Using this book as a guide,
managers in the marine industry learn to apply 12 common risk-based
decision-making tools that help them make practical and
technically-defensible decisions for managing port and waterway
operations, conducting inspections, and preparing and responding to
accidents. The authors thorough examine the 12 tools and include
discussions on each tool's concepts, limitations, common uses,
procedures, terminology, and applications to marine safety in a
clearly outlined, user-friendly format. Marine Safety examines such
tools as Pareto Analysis, Checklist Analysis, Relative Ranking/Risk
Indexing, Change Analysis, What-if Analysis, Hazard and
Operability, Fault Tree Analysis, and Event and Causal Factor
Charting. In addition, Marine Safety examines key factors for
choosing risk assessment methods and suggest risk assessment
approaches to support different types of decision making, depending
on each situation. Examples of common marine-oriented situations,
illustrative charts, graphs, and diagrams are included for easy
understanding.

The U.S. underground coal miner faces a continuing hazard from the
fall of roof. At the root of many injuries and fatalities are weak
or defective roof strata. Throughout mining history, millions of
miles of entry have provided exposure of every conceivable geologic
roof hazard. This report describes the geologic origin,
association, and potential danger from the most common hazards.
Discussions of weak rock include drawrock, rider coals, head coal,
stackrock, and stream valley effects. Discontinuities, or roof
defects, are described including, clay veins, slickensides, joints,
and paleochannels. A number of examples from U.S. coalfields are
used to document geologic structure and associated hazards. Roof
fall analysis is a methodology used by NIOSH for hazard recognition
and prevention; its application and benefit to the industry are
discussed.
Rose of the Winds: the Origin and Development of the Compass-Card
By Silvanus P. Thompson
Excerpt
Although the construction of the compass lies outside the scope of
this inquiry, some preliminary considerations are necessary
concerning the origin of the compass itself; and these must be
stated briefly. The mariners' compass, as we know it to-day,
consists of a light circular disk or card, beneath which is
attached a magnetic needle or system of magnetic needles. The card
is provided at its centre with a small cap, by which it is poised
movably upon a pin. The whole is enclosed in a hollow box or bowl
covered with a flat lid of glass; and the compass box or bowl is
suspended within two hinged rings of brass to enable it to conserve
its proper horizontal position in spite of any tilting movement to
which it is subjected by the rolling or pitching of the ship on
which it is carried.
The card is divded out into thirty-two 'points' or 'rhumbs' of
equal angular breadth forming a rose or star, and to these are
affixed the initials of the names of the thirty-two points. The
magnet needle, or system of needles, is affixed to the card
parallel to the direction marked NS on the card, so that when left
to itself, the card, obeying the directive force which acts on the
needle, sets itself in a direction pointing (magnetically) North
and South; the several 'points' marked on the card then indicating
the several directions that the mariner may know in which way to
steer in order to follow his desired course. The card is also
usually marked at its North point with a fleur-de-lis or other
distinctive sign. The magnetic needle is controlled in its pointing
by the magnetism of the earth's globe.
It is no part of the present paper to enter upon the reasons for
the irregularities which are found to exist in the directive force
of the earth, and which produce those local 'variations' of the
compass which the mariner encounters everywhere. Neither is there
here any question considered as to the errors or perturbations due
to the presence near the compass of pieces of iron on the ship, nor
as to those due to the incidental presence of magnetism in the iron
of the ship's hull or fittings; nor, again, as to the means for
compensating those perturbations or correcting those errors.
The compass, as above described, has remained practically unchanged
in all essential particulars for...

Windham Press is committed to bringing the lost cultural heritage
of ages past into the 21st century through high-quality
reproductions of original, classic printed works at affordable
prices.
This book has been carefully crafted to utilize the original images
of antique books rather than error-prone OCR text. This also
preserves the work of the original typesetters of these classics,
unknown craftsmen who laid out the text, often by hand, of each and
every page you will read. Their subtle art involving judgment and
interaction with the text is in many ways superior and more human
than the mechanical methods utilized today, and gave each book a
unique, hand-crafted feel in its text that connected the reader
organically to the art of bindery and book-making.
We think these benefits are worth the occasional imperfection
resulting from the age of these books at the time of scanning, and
their vintage feel provides a connection to the past that goes
beyond the mere words of the text.

From 1990-1997, Drew Ross served as a forensic psychiatrist for the
criminal justice system. His job was to judge the "sanity" of
people charged with murder. The law requires black-and-white
answers; unfortunately, Ross' training had taught him that the
human mind is more complex than the law would allow.
Looking Into the Eyes of a Killer details one man's journey into
the darkness of the human psyche and the evils of a system.
Standing at the crossroads of psychiatry and the law, Ross explores
the many contradictions and misconceptions that prevail when juries
and judges evaluate insanity pleas and issues of blame. Never
falling prey to easy solutions, he makes a compelling argument for
new guidelines for dealing with violent criminals, and shows how
our failure to "reform" them springs from our unwillingness to
confront ourselves.

NEW INSIGHT INTO SHAKESPEARE'S SONNET SEQUENCE Berkeley's John
Noonan presents the case for a new reading of 22 of Shakespeare's
Sonnets Berkeley, California. John T. Noonan, Jr., U.C. Berkeley
professor and federal judge, is the author of Shakespeare's
Spiritual Sonnets just published by Amazon. Noonan presents
argument and analysis of the Sonnets pointing to addressees of
these poems far from the usual suspects. His candidates include
God, the Virgin Mary, Mother Church, and Jesuit missionaries to
England. He himself acknowledges his own reluctance to believe that
the Bard was "mixed up with Jesuits." Imagine for a moment
discovering new poems by Shakespeare. Noonan discards the
assumption that the Sonnets reflect the course of two or more love
affairs. Observing that it is generally agreed that some of the
Sonnets are commissioned work urging a young man to marry, and that
two sonnets are addressed to the poet's soul, he argues that each
of the remaining sonnets should be examined in terms of its
particular purpose and addressee. His analysis is both negative,
pointing to substantial difficulties and gaps in the standard
approach, and positive, showing the probability of a different
reading. Not by Euclidean logic, he writes, but by a convergence of
probabilities is the case made. Noonan's interpretation sets the 22
sonnets firmly in the context of religious controversy and
compelled conformity in Queen Elizabeth's Britain and in the larger
context of continental currents of theology. Shakespeare, Noonan
notes, was a man of his time, and the time extends back to Pope
Gregory's dispatch of missionaries to England a thousand years
earlier. Noonan offers a spectrum within which he suggests that
Shakespeare fits. At one end is William Byrd, composer for Queen
Elizabeth and composer of masses and motets for the Catholic
underground. At the other end of the spectrum is Robert Southwell,
S.J., sought, caught, and hung as a priest criminally present in
the country. Between them, Noonan places Shakespeare, who borrowed
ideas and inspiration from Southwell's poems and who emulated Byrd
in his ability to please the queen and to enhearten his own
disfavored community. Noonan's book is likely to lead many lovers
of Shakespeare to look at the Sonnets afresh.
Christian parenting is hard work--and it's getting harder. Parents
have a deep desire to pass on their faith, but fear that today's
increasingly skeptical and hostile world will eventually lead their
kids to reject the truth of Christianity. That leaves many parents
feeling overwhelmed--uncertain of what they can do to help their
children, given the difficulty and extent of the faith challenges
they will face. This practical and timely resource gives parents
the confidence of knowing what to discuss with their children and
how to discuss it in order to facilitate impactful conversations
that will form the basis of a lifelong faith. In a friendly,
parent-to-parent voice, Natasha Crain identifies 30 specific
conversations about God that parents must have with their children,
organizing them under the categories of - the existence of God -
science and God - the nature of God - believing in God - the
difference God makes Chapters are sequenced in a
curriculum-oriented way to provide a cumulative learning
experience, making this book a flexible resource for use in
multiple settings: homes, church classes, youth groups, small
groups, private Christian schools, and homeschools. Every chapter
has a step-by-step conversation guide with discussion questions and
tips, and content is readily adaptable for use with kids of any age
(elementary through high school). Endorsements: "My prayer is that
God will use this book to both motivate and equip you to help your
kids develop convictions about their faith."--From the foreword by
Sean McDowell, PhD, Biola University professor, speaker, and author
of more than eighteen books, including A New Kind of Apologist "I
can't think of a more relevant or more needed book for parents
raising kids in today's culture. This book on apologetics will lead
parents in critical conversations that will help grow and guide
kids to be lifelong followers of Christ."--Kristen Welch, author of
Raising Grateful Kids in an Entitled World "Hey parents: Do you
want to reduce the chances that your child will follow the crowd to
the point of rejecting Christ and the values and truths you hold so
dearly? Then you need to have the conversations that Natasha Crain
so brilliantly describes in this book. Prevent heartbreak later by
reading and heeding this book now!"--Frank Turek, PhD, president of
CrossExamined Ministries and author of I Don't Have Enough Faith to
Be an Atheist and Stealing from God "May this book lead to
thousands more Moms and Dads engaging with their kids through an
intelligent faith. And may there be tens of thousands more kids who
feel loved because the adults in their lives take their questions
seriously."--Jeff Myers, PhD, president, Summit Ministries
Many regard jazz as the soundtrack of America, born and raised in
its cities and echoing throughout its tumultuous century of
progress. So when Ernest Hemingway wrote about seeing jazz in 1920s
Paris, and when British colonial officials danced to jazz in the
clubs of Calcutta in the waning years of the Raj, how, exactly, had
it gotten there? Jazz Worlds/World Jazz aims to answer these
questions and more, bringing together voices from countries as far
flung as Azerbaijan, Armenia, and India to show that the story of
jazz is not trapped in American history books but alive in global
modernity. Monumental in scope, this book explores the relationship
between jazz and culture and how they influence each other across a
range of themes and settings. Contributors offer an analysis of the
social meaning of jazz in Iran, a look at the genesis of Ethiopian
jazz and at Indian fusion, and chapters on jazz diplomacy, Balkan
swing, and that French export par excellence: Django Reinhardt.
Altogether the contributors approach jazz--in these global
iterations--through the themes that have always characterized it at
home: place, history, mobility, media, and race. The result is a
first-of-its-kind map of jazz around the globe that pays tribute to
the players who have given the form its seemingly infinite
possibilities.
This compact book outlines the controversies andimplications of
the central debate of the Reformation: justification by faith
alone.Luther said that the doctrine of justificationby faith alone
is "the article upon which the church stands orfalls." R. C. Sproul
follows Luther's lead in his concise andcompelling work, now
repackaged and republished. Justified byFaith Alone surveys the
main tenets of the doctrine ofjustification in Roman Catholicism
and evangelicalism. Sproul iscareful to accurately represent
Catholic beliefs and observes thatwhile both traditions agree that
faith is necessary forjustification, the difference lies in whether
faith alone issufficient. He explores problems with the Catholic
doctrine andchampions the sole sufficiency of Christ for our
salvation.Effective and engaging, Sproul does not shyaway from
difficult theological terms and ideas, but capably guidesreaders
through this famous doctrinal dispute. To those who decrythe
doctrines of imputation and justification by faith alone as"legal
fiction," Sproul warns that nothing less than the centralmessage of
the gospel is at stake.
